3 CHANGING MINDSETS ABOUT THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY CONCEPT Women all around the world, including in Africa have more choices now but they are still underrepresented in many levels. Though top positions should also be commended, they do not necessarily come with the authority to make changes. This year s international women s day theme is to press for progress. Now, more than ever, there's a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. A strong call to press for progress. A strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive. This women s day forum, coinciding with worldwide women s day theme seeks to push for progress for women by understanding what are the persistent barriers that inhibit women from fully taking opportunities available, particularly those in tourism, and the barriers that limit their rise to authoritative, decision-making and managerial positions. How do different parts of our society in Tanzania understand to be the role of a woman? What in particular are women s understanding about their roles? Following the keynote speech, questions will be posed to panellists. Each panellist will be given up to about 5 minutes to provide remarks and perspective drawing on their personal experience. The second hour of the panel will be dedicated to an open dialogue from the floor, with questions and input from the audience solicited in groups of three or four. QUESTIONS TO GUIDE THE DISCUSSION 1. There has been a lot of discussion about private sector development and improving the business environment across Africa. What is preventing progress? 2. How can we practically work to remove the negative stigmas that curtail women s potentials? SESSION I THE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN TANZANIAN TOURISM LABOUR MARKET Tourism is particularly good at creating formal jobs and brings vast economic development in remote / rural areas due direct and indirect effect of the value chain. For example it accelerates reform, triggers infrastructure improvements as well as drives the supply chain and related industry to supply to the tourism industry. It has proven to increase domestic consumption and diversifies exports (tourism is currently the biggest export sector in Tanzania). It empowers women, young fairly low educated people, of which a significant share from marginalized populations near border areas of wilderness areas and further stimulates cultural heritage and environmental conservation. Most important Tourism promotes public-private partnerships and improves the national image. Encouraging and advancing women s participation in tourism would go a long way in simultaneously increasing their participation in public, economic and social affairs. QUESTIONS TO GUIDE THE DISCUSSION: 1. What are the major barriers to women when entering the labour market in the tourism sector? 2. What opportunities can be made available in tourism businesses to become more inclusive? 3. What policies, laws, and practices should be adopted to ensure inclusivity? 2
