DG visit to Bunbury - Wolleston Club July 26 - DG Visit to Dunsborough Club Official Publication of Lions District 201W2 District Coordinator: Bob Halford westlionw2@gmail.com LIONS AND COMMUNITY WORKING TOGETHER District Governor s Message We are at the start of another Lions year for our District 201W2. I look forward to looking after the District and all our Clubs. I have a hard act to follow, in the steps of IPDG Grant Hewett. I will do my very best to keep this going and hopefully, increase the number of clubs in our District. The installation of all the new District Governors (750 +) world wide is the very last item on the agenda of the International Convention. We were all installed on July 3 rd in Las Vegas (the very hot city of USA). Not all were able to attend due to visa problems with the USA government rules. My Motto for the year is Lions and Community Working Together. Our new International President Gudrun Yngvadottir is from Iceland and the first lady to hold this position. The motto for all International President s is We Serve, but IP Gudrun also has her own theme of Beyond the Horizon. There are new changes and emphasis coming for all Lions. One being New Voices which you would have already had s from International office about. Please ensure your club follows up on this, especially where it includes increasing the number of females in your clubs. I have already made changes to the District with the zones, as you would all be aware of, for those concerned. As such, I m still looking for two Zone Chairman for Zone 1 and Zone 3. Hopefully these will be filled sooner rather than later. I still have the Children of Courage position to fill and have a possibility of 3 Lions to choose from. Once these are filled, my Cabinet will be complete. 2 Lions International President Gudrun Yngvadottir, her Husband with District Governor Bev Hawkins and PDG Alan Hawkins at the International Cenvention in Las Vegas on 3rd July It is good to see the large number of new Lions listed in this newsletter and fingers crossed this will continue. We need to Stop the Drops and increase our membership as much as possible. This is not just a problem in Australia, but it is Worldwide. With this in mind, it was great to find out at the International Convention that there are now two (2) new countries have joined our international association. They are Afghanistan and Myanmar, which brings the number of countries to 214. With membership increases, I m also looking to start a minimum of 1 new club and possibly 2. One is in the metropolitan area and the other just out of the same area. More news to follow. Our trip to the USA was great before doing my final training for 3 days before the International convention. We travelled to the Grand Canyon (south rim), Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, Zion Park (the most beautiful formations to be seen). We took a coach tour for 7 days and it was amazing. After Las Vegas, we sent to San Francisco for a few days to have a look. Did tours and saw as much as we could, but it would have to be the dirtiest city in USA which was something DISTRICT 201 W2 NEWS PAGE 2 we had not expected. If you are willing to drive yourself, you could travel further out from the city, but like all things, it costs money and it is not cheap. These are our thoughts and I m sure quite a few of W2 Lions have been to USA and have different opinions. It is great to travel and see for yourself. I am privileged and proud to head up a talented and committed District team, who all look forward to serving you and your Clubs in our year ahead. Alan and I are looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible as we travel our District during the coming year and convention.

8 LIONS CLUB OF MARGARET RIVER INC. DONATION TO AUSTRALIAN LIONS CHILDREN S MOBILITY FOUNDATION SECURES WALKER FOR CHILD IN DISTRICT W2 Musa, who is now five years old, was born with Cerebral Palsy, caused by an extremely difficult birth for Renee. Musa continues to have seizures, some more serious than others, and is sometimes hospitalised. He wasn t feeling 100% yesterday but Renee did manage to get him in his Buddy Roamer in order for us to see firsthand what a wonderful machine this is and how well he reacts to being able to move his arms and legs. How wonderful it is to be a Lion and know that we can make a difference!! Help a Child Walk Today Bob and I had the very great pleasure of meeting with Renee and Musa Danzo on 3 July Also present were Emma Griffiths, Ability WA, Renee s mum (from Alice Springs) and Musa s little brother. Musa was presented with a Buddy Roamer (size 2) about 5-6 weeks ago, due to the generous donation of $6849 from the Lions Club of Margaret River. Lion Brian Prendergast was the instigator of this donation and Renee spoke highly of Brian s involvement and caring nature. Emma arranged the visit for Bob and I and we thank her for her continuing support of this family. Musa loves his new Buddy Roamer and smiles and dances to the television when he watches the Wiggles etc. Renee said they were indebted to the Australian Lions Children s Mobility Foundation for their support and said that Musa s health has improved, in that his hips are now straightening out through being erect and the doctors are amazed at what a difference the walker has made. Bob and I spent a couple of hours with this family and it was wonderful to see the interaction between his mother, brother and grandma, who are all such loving and caring people. Lion Margaret Halford W2 District Chairman Australian Lions Children s Mobility Foundation STAMP COLLECTION We request that you consider a Project for the Australian Children's Mobility Foundation, collecting used stamps, that the whole family could be involved in, Schools, Businesses and the whole Community. Please bring to W2 Convention. Trim to 3mm around Stamp DISTRICT 201 W2 NEWS PAGE 8

10 WESTERN AUSTRALIAN LIONS AND LEO S LEAP TO HELP DOGS AND KIDS the dog, they can go at their own pace, they relax, have fun, and soon their confidence soars along with their reading abilities. Story Dogs very much appreciates the support of the five Lions Clubs and one Leo Club that have sponsored Story Dogs. The Waroona Lions and Leo s were the first on board sponsoring John and his dog Abbey for the last two years. Abbey and John help children in the junior school of the Waroona District School. The Lions Club of Falcon have sponsored Pearl and Julie, who help children at Halls Head Primary School. Two recent Clubs helping with dog sponsorship are the Lions Club of South Perth who have sponsored 2 Story Dogs and The Lions Club of Booragoon who have sponsored one Story Dog. Overall the W2 District Clubs are now helping over 25 children learn to read every week. Well done Lions! What does it mean to sponsor a Story Dog? It means that each of these fabulous Clubs have donated $500 towards buying all the essential items to put a Story Dog into a school for one year. These things are, books, insurance, vet check, volunteer training, uniforms, reading rug, training materials and the accreditation of the Dog Team (dog and handler). What do Story Dogs Do? Our volunteer Dog Teams go into a local school once a week and listen to students read to the their Dog. Each student is carefully selected by the classroom teacher as being the neediest and also a child that does not get any other support. Students are generally in year 2, about 7 or 8 years old. Each students comes out of their classroom and sits with the Dog Team in a quiet area and reads oneon-one to the dog for approx. 20mins. Our Volunteers can see between 4 6 students each week and they are the same students each week so that a rapport gradually grows between the volunteer, student and dog. The outcomes are amazing. The student is not judged by Story Dogs is currently helping over 1,840 children every week Australia wide and is growing at 45%. We have other dog teams in the W2 District that need sponsors, especially in the Baldivis, Fremantle, Rockingham, Lemming and Port Kennedy areas. Check us out at Thanks Lions for supporting our local children learning to read! Lion John Clare and Story Dog Abby-Min DISTRICT 201 W2 NEWS PAGE 10

13 ALHD BAXTER IS ASSISTING KYLIE HUTTON IN BUSSELTON Busselton resident Kylie Hutton poses with new hearing dog Baxter, delivered to her this week. Picture: Sarah Ison Busselton Dunsborough Times At first glance black Labrador Baxter may look like a seeingeye-dog, but spend just a few minutes with him and owner Kylie Hutton and it becomes obvious the canine is of an even rarer breed. Lions Hearing Dogs Australia provides service-dogs to clinically deaf people across the country, with each pooch costing about $35,000 to train. The waiting list stretches from anywhere between twelve months to two years and the organisation only gives out about 20 dogs every year. Ms Hutton s hearing declined significantly over the past five years and along with sinus problems, made hearing aids next to useless for her. As a result, Ms Hutton relied on flashing lights and vibrations to indicate when certain devices such as phones and timers were going off. Like with all technology, all of this could and did malfunction at times, she said. I used to have a Labrador as my hearing was going, Luke, and I didn t realise how much he helped me until he passed away in I fell into a heap and that s when it dawned on me how much I needed him. After her dog s death, Ms Hutton jumped at the chance for a hearing dog and a short 12 months after lodging her application, Baxter was delivered to her door after being flown over from Adelaide by LHDA. He knows up to nine sounds and responses, service-dog trainer Bella Pearson said. He has a response for anything from door knocks, door bells, alarms, whistling kettles and mobile phones. Ms Hutton said she felt safer and more confident with Baxter now in her home and could do the things she had not been able to in more than five years. Only 20 hearing dogs are given out every year by the not-for-profit organisation, Australian Lions Hearing Dogs. Labrador Baxter is one such dog and was delivered to Busselton resident Kylie Hutton DISTRICT 201 W2 NEWS PAGE 13
