1 DISTRICT 201 W2 Newsletter MARCH 2017 INSIDE ISSUE: THIS DG Terry s Message WE SERVE DISTRICT GOVERNOR Terry Collinson Fifty Years Service Reconised LIONS TRANSITION TO THE FUTURE Club Admin and Devlop, Days Becoming a Guiding Lion Hearing Bus Bookings Situations Vacant Lorna and Arthur Dodd Award LCIF Making a Difference In Memorium Solo Walk from Cape York March and April are the traditional times for holding elections and for allocating activity money. I refer you all to our January newsletter which covered these issues. Elections DGE Grant spoke of disputes in clubs, project dictatorship, leaders for life, club standards, co-operation and harmony. His message was capsulated in Are we having fun yet? It is a great article and worth regular review. A further review will definitely help when considering new office bearers, nominations from new members and plans for next year. Donations My article Who Do We Serve also spoke of allocating activity money to local community services and Lions Foundations. I suggested that half should remain in the local community and the other half allocated to District, Multiple District and International Foundations. I listed some of our Foundations and the necessity for club support. We have many dedicated Lions members serving on committees and taking active roles in these foundations, but they all need club support. Without generous financial support, these projects cannot continue and these valuable services will be lost to the wider communities. You will no doubt receive circulars from some individual foundations asking for your support. Please refer to my January article and assist our foundations in the manner suggested. We are Lions, we serve those in need and we support all our programs. Official Publication of Lions District 201W2 District Coordinator: 201W2 DOT JACOBS lionsweb2@gmail.com DISTRICT NEWSLETTER NEXT EDITION: 15 APRIL 2017 COPY DEADLINE: 7 APRIL 2017 District website Membership The January newsletter also referred to membership Keep it simple I spoke of our reasons for joining Lions and why we continue to stay. Reference was made to the ongoing relevance of activities as an attraction for others to join. We held our 3rd weekend workshop in February with topics central to membership, branch clubs and leadership. We were grateful for the support from those attending but noted that only a few clubs were represented and very few new members enrolled. We have excellent presenters who work very hard on their presentations but lack of club support is disappointing. Apology My apology for page 1 of the February newsletter. There were 3 separate topics RUOK are you ok Your Speech some tips and tricks A Wealth of Information available on lionsclubs.org When combined, nothing makes sense. Editors Note: It was me who messed up the DG s message last month.
2 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER FIFTY YEAR SERVICE TO LION HAROLD LOREK The Australian Lions Foundation approved the minting of a special Medallion to be presented to all Lions who have served 50 years as members of Lions Clubs International. It was recognised that this is a significant milestone in anyone s lifetime and due recognition was due. The Medallion is provided to each District on a yearly basis, together with a copy of the book Lion Bill and a letter of congratulations from ALF Chairman PDG Glenn Herbert. WA State GLT/GMT Districts 201W1 and W2 meet together every 6 months to discuss membership and leadership. At our last meeting it was decided that we would combine some sessions. To this end W2 members are invited to join W1 members in an education session to become a Certified Guiding Lion. We have a limited number of these guiding lions and need more to assist clubs. Please note the invitation below and RSVP to Christine if you can attend. The Medallion was presented to Lion Harold Lorek of The Lions Club of Mandurah Inc. by PCC Ian Kelly, the Assistant Treasurer of ALF. 4 Lions Clubs and LCIF Making a Difference to People s Lives March 2015, 2 years ago, Cyclone Pam the largest storm in a generation flattened a wide path of devastation across the Vanuatu Islands. Then on ANZAC Day 25 th April 2015 Nepal experienced the first of two massive earthquakes that caused so much destruction and tens of thousands of people in need of help. Local Lions immediately provided help distributing food and drinking water to their communities and villages on neighbouring islands and high in the mountains. Australian, Indonesian and New Zealander Lions Clubs gave generously to LCIF to help these Lions and Leos distribute food, drinking water and essential goods. News cameras and broadcasters have moved on, but Lions are continuing to rebuild communities. New schools in Vanuatu are underway, construction made possible with LCIF Grants. In Nepal, the reconstruction of 9 schools has started. Bids for the construction contracts have been published. Successful tenders will be chosen and begin work. The work will take a couple of years, but Lions remain, part of their community s fabric, supported by your Lions Club and the Lions Family around the world via LCIF Grants. This year, our 100 th Birthday, celebrate by making a donation to LCIF Area of Greatest Need to help provide future Grants to your neighbouring Lions Clubs and Lions Clubs across Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and around the world take on large humanitarian projects in their communities. 100% of every dollar donated goes back to Lions Clubs in way of LCIF Grants. Send your donation to your District Cabinet Treasurer, or individually donate via Thank you for your support. Yours In Lionism Nigel Jeny LCIF Board Trustee CA Vll nigeljeny@hotmail.com DISTRICT GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER MARCH 2017 PAGE 4 IN MEMORIUM At the Southernforests Convention, manjimup Lions Club promised a plaque for our deceased lions to be placed on the memorial wall in the Manjimup Timber and Heritage Park. There were one or two issues with the original plaque which necessitated a new one being engraved. That process is now completed and the plaque has been installed. LIONS RECYCLE for SIGHT
5 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER Walking Solo from Cape York to Cape Leeuwin John Olsen, Rob Dedman, Dennis Burges How would you like to take on the challenge of walking solo from Cape York to Cape Leeuwin, a distance of 5500 km. John Olsen did. It took him 9 1/2 months to do it, but he got there. Then just to add to the occasion he decided to walk from Cape Leeuwin to Perth and extra 550 km. I had the pleasure of meeting John on his final leg of the journey. It was late afternoon and he had walked from Mandurah to Rockingham. When I met him, I was hand watering and saw him walking along the footpath with his trailer Wilson. I opened up the conversation, commenting on his rig. John was obviously in a hurry and was about to walk past, but stopped to chat. It was then that I realised who he was. He replied that he was in a hurry as he needed to find a place to camp for the night, as the local caravan park wouldn t allow him to set up his tent. I said, You re the guy who talks to Macca on Sundays. Are you looking for a Lions Club? John continued by saying this was his worst day of travel as he had 5 flat tyres and no where to stay. You re in Lions he said as he saw my Lions shirt and hat that I was wearing. Can you help me? I offered a bed, but no, all he wanted to do was set up his tent on my back lawn. This he did in very quick time, and then met up with our Club President, Dennis Burges before joining my wife Anne and I for dinner that night. What an amazing tale he told of his journey through the centre of Australia and the support he received from Lions Clubs (John is a member of the Corio Lions Club in Geelong, Victoria). It was a fascinating tale of hardships, friendships, and overcoming challenges. After a good night s sleep and a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs supplied by President Dennis and wife Inge, John set about repairing his punctured tyres. His final walk was to Lion Arthur and Dora Bush-Jones in Casuarina. I offered to drive him there as it was still a distance of 16km, but no, John wanted to continue walking. I waved goodbye to him at 11.00am continuing to admire a wonderful person who briefly came into my world. You can see more of John s story if you go on line to Rob Dedman Zone Chair Zone 8 MARCH 2017 PAGE 5
