3 introduction OOH ARCHITECTURAL TEAM coordinated by blankstudio architecture This submittal represents the the first step in the work of our architectural team to envision the future campus of Ohio Outdoor Heaven: a multifaceted entertainment, recreational, and cultural center in Southeast Ohio. The centerpiece of the complex is a 10,000-person semi-enclosed amphitheater that can be used as a venue for major public entertainment events. Adjacent to this venue is a generous progression of retail spaces, a convention and exhibition center for both corporate and private events, a major resort hotel with a spa/fitness center, a museum dedicated to the Kneival legacy, and access points for a variety of outdoor and indoor activities. Filling out the site are additional recreation, food, and specialty lodging opportunities, as well as a generous number of parking spaces to accommodate the large events. Though the amphitheater is the main focus of this project, we have suggested an overall master plan to help situate the amphitheater in its context and to take advantage of the synergetic relationships between the amphitheater and its surrounding functions. For example, an event plaza at the entrance to the amphitheater creates a public gathering space which is a highlight of the main retail concourse. This retail concourse connects the entrance/drop-off area at one end to the hotel at the other end, and is envisioned as a pedestrian-only walkway within a rich landscape of water features, trees, shade structures, and dramatic night-time lighting. Below-level parking ensures that customers can park close to stores, the hotel, and other activities. The convention and exhibition center are within close range of the amphitheater to allow a variety of uses, and the hotel is proposed to be located adjacent to the convention and exhibition center as the anchor at the end of the ridge. When viewed from a distance, the entire complex might resemble a modern-day hill town or acropolis, growing dramatically from the ridge it is located on. Both the proposed location of the amphitheater and the suggestions for overall master plan are the product of the analysis of various attributes of the site. These studies are provided in the first portion of this submittal. Entering the amphitheater from the main event plaza, one passes under the upper seating area to emerge slightly above the middle of the seating area, facing the stage. This is intended to heighten the drama of entering the space, similar to that of entering a stadium. The semi-enclosed roof canopy would provide shade and protection from the rain and wind, yet be open enough to ensure that the smells, sounds, and views of the surrounding environment can remind the visitor that they have come to a special place in nature. To the east (left side) of the amphitheater, we propose that a particularly noteworthy hill outcrop be preserved in a semi-wild state, providing a sense of natural enclosure to the amphitheater. The stage itself is intended to protrude into the lake, opening up a range of theatrical opportunities to stage designers and production managers who can use the lake itself as a background to the drama happening on stage. In this submittal, we present two schematic options for the amphitheater enclosure: one version with a tensile fabric enclosure, and the other version with an engineered wood "lamella" structure. Given the large spans required to enclose such a large space, this structure will have a major impact on the overall character of the space. We are presenting both versions to get client input, and based on this feedback, we intend to identify the relative costs of each version. 02 Victor E. 21 17 + GRAPHIC SCALE URBAN PROMENADE By narrowing the space between the back of the amphitheater and the auz=xillary buildings to the North along with the introduction of a prominent water feature, a new urban promenade is created along the ridge. 22 LAMELLA TRUSS FRAME COVERING FABRIC COVER NOT SHOWN FOR CLARITY Lamella domes are generated with concentric rings, where each subsequent ring is rotated by a half module. This reduces the length of the ring tubes as the geometry proceeds towards the apex. When the tubes of the rings become too small (usually half the length of the first), they "consolidate" to the next ring, joining the two divisions into one. The separation between rings in Lamella domes can be varied so they are equilateral triangles forming each ring. Because the tubes of each ring are equal, the manufacturing time is fast and assembly is easy WATER LEVEL GRAPHIC SCALE

24 20 The proposed ideas in this submittal are the fruits of the vision and leadership of Wei Sheng, John Hughes, and the team of Ohio Outdoor Heaven, who have been and will be responsible for making this ambitious plan come to fruition. We submit this in the interest in continued discussion to further define these ideas and transform them into a place of excitement and wonder.
