Chapte 3 Westwad Migation Alexande Canedy s westwad look The land gants ecoded in the Plymouth town ecods povide a sense of the development of the Lakenham-Winnetuxet-Monponsett aea west of Plymouth as it was opened up ove the decades befoe Alexande Canedy eceived his land gant in As might be expected, the fist settles of the aea followed the Nemasket Tail westwad out of Plymouth. Ealy land gants in Lakenham and Winnetuxet As ealy as August 6, 1637, the move west began with John Deby being ganted land at Mounts Hill nea the small lake that became known as Daby Pond, about fou and a half miles west of Plymouth and just noth of the Nemasket Tail. John Deby is gaunted theescoe acees of land at Mounts Hill if yt shalbe found convenient vpon view to be taken theeof by M Edwad Winslow & M John Jenney. Edwad Dotey is to haue the like thee also, if it be thought fitt vpon thei view as afoesaid. [1] Daby Pond is located on the map below just noth of Cave Road, which geneally follows the old Nemasket Tail.
On Decembe 4, 1637, the clek ecoded, M. John Debys fom[e] gaunt at Mounts Hill is confimed. [2] At the same meeting, Edwad Dotey was finally getting aound to making aangements to view his potential land gant. Edwad Dotey and Tistam Clak, his fathe in law, ae to take Josiah Winslow, Nathaniell Sowthe, & Josuah Patt, and to view a pcell of land by M John Debies gaunt at Mounts Hill, that vpon thei epot theeof to the Gounou and Assistants, they may haue pcells theeof gaunted to them. Dotey s selected land nea to John Deby s was ganted to him on Febuay 5, 1638, and now Thuston Clak and Geoge Mooe wanted to take the tail west to Daby Pond. Fouty acees of lands ae gaunted vnto Thuston Clak, and a gaden place lying at the southwest end of Debys Pond, on the south side of Monts Hill chase. Theescoe acees of lands ae gaunted vnto Edwad Dotey, and a gaden place lying at the westene end of Debys Pond. Geoge Mooe is gaunted xxv acees of land and a gaden place thee also. [3] Since Clak s gaden was at the southwest end of Daby Pond and south of Mounts Hill chase (pesumably a path leading to the hill), Mounts Hill must be the hill which is located on the noth side of Daby Pond. This hill has an elevation of 170 feet and is the only significant one aound the lake. Daby Pond is 124 feet above sea level. At that same town meeting in Febuay, 1638, Stephen Hopkins expessed his intentions to go fathe west yet to Six Mile Book, which late became known to the English as the Winnetuxet Rive. [4] M Stephen Hopkins equesteth a gaunt of lands towad the Six Mile Booke. Six Mile Book is outlined in ed in the map below. It flows out of Muddy Pond which is west of -2-
Daby Pond and close to the Nemasket Tail. As the name implies, the book flows about six miles befoe it empties into the Taunton Rive. Othe Gantees Follow Them West Afte viewing the land in behalf of John Deby, John Jenney found some land that he liked. On Mach 5, 1637/38, he was ganted land on the east side of Six Mile Book. That gant was named Lakenham. One hunded and fifty aces of land ae gaunted vnto M. John Jenney, lying on the east side of the Six Mile Booke, in the way to Namascutt, to bee a fame belonging to the towne of Plymouth, and to be called by the name Lakenhame. And wheas thee was not enough found on the east sid of the said booke, the Cout gaunted vnto him a cetain necke which is bounded as followeth, viz: by Lakenham booke one the one side, and with a swamp on the othe side, with a smale booke in it. [5] John Jenney eceived some additional land in Lakenham on Apil 2, [6] The desciption seems to indicate the gant was noth of Muddy Pond, on the east side of the Winnetuxet whee it flows nothwad out of Muddy Pond. Lakenham was the name of this specific land gant, but it late efeed to the much lage aea of nothen Cave Township. Histoian Heny S. Giffith says the gant to John Jenney... was the gem of this town in the woods, [7] meaning Cave Township. The aea today is known as Noth Cave. A month late, on May 7, 1638, Nathaniel Southe, Joshua Patt, Nehemiah Smyth, Geoge Watson, Nicholas Snow and John Rouse expessed a desie fo land... towad Six Mile Booke. [8] On Octobe 1, 1638, Edwad Dotey etuned to the town meeting fo a land tansaction. Wheeas sixtie acees of land wee gaunted to Edwad Dotey, lying at a pond neee Namassacutt Payth, vpon ch epot that he had sould his house and land at Heigh Cliffe to M Richad Deby, w bagaine is now elinquished, the said Edwad Dotey doth also elinquish the said gant. And the Cout hath gaunted the said Edwad Dotey six acees of meadow thee, to lye to his house at Heigh Cliff, and all that pcell of vpland lying befoe the said meadow, and to begin at the estely end at the swampe, anging vp westely to anothe swampe, and to extend to Namascutt Path, southwad, sauing that the said Edwad Dotey shall allow a payth fo caiages as shalbe thought meet to be layd foth. [9] Bidget Fulle eceived some land on Apil 6, is A pcell tenn acees of meddow in the long meddow by Edwad Doteys is gaunted to M Bidgitt Fulle, to be ch [10] layd foth fo he of that w lyeth next to Edwad Doteys meddow, and a pcell of vpland to yt. On June 1, 1640, thity yeas befoe Alexande Canedy appeaed in Plymouth, ou familia acquaintance, John Banes, secued a land gant. John Banes is gaunted one hunded acees of vpland, and tenn acees of meddow next beyond the Six Mile Booke, in the way to Namascutte, two aces of meddow lying at the said booke to be pt of the said tenn aces -3-
of meddow. [11] On Novembe 2, 1640, land was ganted to Richad Spaow, Edwad Dotey, Bidget Fulle, John Atwood and James Hust in The west meddow called Lakenham by Doteys. [12] The next yea at a town meeting on Septembe 16, 1641: Thustone Clak is gaunted tenn acees of vpland at the head of Edwad Doteys lott towad Mount Hill payth..... Edwad Doteys pcell of vpland at Lakenham is gaunted to be made vp fouty aces. M John Atwood is gaunted one hunded acees of vpland to his meddow at Lakenham, and to abut vpon the said meddow as neee as may bee. s M Bidget Fulle is gaunted one hunded acees of vpland to he meddow at Lakenhame, and to abut vpon he meddow thee, as neee as it can convenyently be layd foth..... M John Jenney is gaunted as much moe vpland as will make his fame at Lakenhame two hunded acees, and when that is used, then to haue moe added to it, in lue of some land he hath yielded vp at the towne to Gabiel Fallowell. James Cole is gaunted fifty aces of vpland at Lakenhame Meddow, and some meddow to be layd out to yt vpon view. [13] The above is the last ecoded land gant in the 1640s fo the Lakenham aea. The land needs of the population had evidently been satisfied. While all these gantees wee secuing land gants a numbe of miles west of Plymouth, they wee living in Plymouth. Meadow land was in demand fo hay fo the cattle which was not as eadily available close to the coast. The uplands povided fiewood and logs fo lumbe fo constuction pojects. Giffith infoms that Indians... endeed settlements hazadous and one Ephaim Tinkham who had squatted nea Lakenham in 1650 was waned that unless he etuned within the dange line he could expect no potection fom the Colony. [14] Late Land Gants in Lakenham and Winnetuxet Ten yeas late, on Febuay 22, 1650/51, land was ganted to Elde Thomas Cushman, John Cooke, John Dunhan, S., William Badfod and James Hust... att Wennituxett... [15] The Plymouth Colony ecod used the name of the Winnetuxet Rive to efe to an aea along the ive, just as Monponsett efeed to the aea aound the pond and Monponsett Pond efeed to the pond. Adopting the Indian names fo these geogaphic featues, the name Winnetuxet soon eplaced Six Mile Book in the Plymouth ecods. The Indian name has a ing to it that the poo English desciptive lacks. th th That same yea on the of the 10 mon Edwad Dotey was given land at Winnetuxet along with John Winslow and Jacob Cooke. [16] th A few days late on the of the 10 month Lieutenant Thomas Southwoth and Gyles Rickad, S., eceived land at Winnetuxet fom the town. [17] These land gantees wee moving nothwad fom the Nemasket Tail, away fom Lakenham into the aea they designated Winnetuxet. In 1659, Richad Wight was ganted land at Winnetuxet. [18] Sometime pio to 1662, Jonathan Shaw -4-
had a house in Lakenham, fo he equested an additional gant of land which was allotted at the th [19] Octobe 27 town meeting... neae his house att Lakenham... At the same town meeting, twenty aces wee ganted to John Rickad, son of Gyles. His popety was... lying on the nothely side of lakenham... James Cole, J., also eceived an additional twenty aces... lying on the nothely side of his land att Lakenham... [20] Robet Ransom, also in the aea by 1663, but the gant is not ecoded, sold some land to Jonathan Shaw which was on Wenham Road accoding to an intepetive note in the Recods of the Town of Plymouth. [21] This was nea Wenham Pond which is about a mile east of Muddy Pond which is the souce of the Winnetuxet Rive. Robet Ransom appaently had moved to the south side of Lakenham pond, which is now Muddy Pond, and eceived additional land thee. [22] Of all these ealy gantees ( ), only Jonathan Shaw is said to have had a house in Lakenham o Winnetuxet and Ephaim Tinkham had been living thee. It is unlikely that all the est mentioned wee absentee landholdes. Howeve, the ecod speaks of thei land without indicating if they had a dwelling on the land. It was common fo these pionees to secue meadow land many miles west of Plymouth fo hay fo thei cattle because such was in shot supply close home. They lived in Plymouth but owned meadow land elsewhee. Land Gants in Tukey Swamp It was still ten yeas befoe Alexande Canedy eceived his land at Monponsett, but land was being ganted futhe and futhe west and noth of Lakenham. By 1662, at least 28 men and 1 woman ae mentioned in the ecods as eceiving land gants in Lakenham and Winnetuxet. At the same town meeting on Octobe 27, 1662, a new geogaphical name is intoduced in the old ecods. A dozen men equested gants of land nea Tukey Swamp, noth of the Winnetuxet Rive. Nathaniel Moton, the town clek, ecoded: The Names of such as desie Meddow in the * soe called; lying on the south side of Tukey Swamp Captaine Badfod Stephen Byant Joseph Waen Samuell Stutevant William Cow John Moton Edwad Gay Richad Wight Samuell Kinge John hamon Ephaim Tinkham heney Wood... fifty acees of upland is gaunted unto each of those twelve men that have meddow gaunted to them at Winnatuxet to bee layed out to them thee [23] Since each one eceived fifty aces, this was a total of 600 aces, almost a squae mile of land. The Plymouth Recods continue: The names of such as desie meddow att the new found meddow in the south side of Tukey Swamp Capt Badfod Joseph Waen -5-
Stephen Byant John hamon Samuell Stutivant Samuell Kinge Geoge Bonum and Edwad Gay Andew Ringe desied John Moton a peece of meddow lying William Cow southely fom the Richad Wight ceda bidge Thity aces of upland gaunted unto John hamon att o neae winnatuxet when those abovesaid twelve men have theie potions layed out fo them if then it can bee found with all and singulae the apputenances to him and his heies fo eve [24] These two lists ae not identical, the second list eliminating Ephaim Tinkham and Heny Wood and adding Geoge Bonum and Andew Ringe. Tukey Swamp had ecently been discoveed and was consideed to be in Winnetuxet. By the fall of 1662, ten yeas befoe Alexande Canedy eceived his land gant, twelve men owned land south of Tukey Swamp which is on the moden day Halifax/Plympton township line, about a mile southeast of Monponsett Pond. These men wee pushing fathe and fathe into the fontie, away fom the Nemasket Tail. Ove the next decades, how many times did they tavese that tail to and fom Plymouth to get timbe, fie wood and hay fom the new found land fo thei use in Plymouth? How often did they weigh living at the location of the esouces of Winnetuxet and balance it against the safety of living in Plymouth? Monponsett Pond Appaently Captain William Badfod [25] was not satisfied to utilize just his land gant in Tukey Swamp. He ventued noth a mile and discoveed a fou ace meadow nothwest of Tukey Swamp nea Monponsett Pond. No one owned that land so he appopiated the swamp gass fo hay, pobably mowing it in the summe of These fou aces nea Monponsett Pond wee ganted to Captain Thomas Southwoth on Januay 26, 1663/64. [26] This is the fist efeence in the Plymouth ecods to Monponsett Pond whee Alexande Canedy eventually possessed land. Land gants in Colcheste Meanwhile, othes wee secuing gants of land along Colcheste Book, a tibutay of the Winnetuxet Rive. At the peviously mentioned meeting on Octobe 27, 1662,... foty acees of upland is gaunted unto John Dunham on the southwest of Colcheste. [27] By Septembe 1663, John Dunham had a neighbo, M. Howland, whose land is identified in the ecod as being in Colcheste. Seven aces of upland wee ganted to Jonathan Boswoth at the southeast end of M. Howland s land. [28] M. Howland just appeas in the document as being in Colcheste without a ecod of being ganted the land oiginally. In Febuay 1663/64, Gyles Rickad, S., elinquished his gant which was then given to his sons: The Remainde of the meddow fomely gaunted to Gyles Rickad seni: lying between Doties meddow and a place called Colcheste is gaunted unto his sonnes John Rickad and Gyles Rickad juni: [29] -6-
... Doties meddow... is a efeence to Edwad Doty who was the second gantee at Daby Pond back in On Decembe 30, 1664, Thomas Southwoth attested that John Cobb and John Moton had sold some land in the aea to Gyles Rickad, Senio. [30] By 1665, Gyles Rickad had land nea Lakenham Neck abutting on the east side of the Winnetuxet Rive. [31] Tukey Swamp In Januay 1666, moe land was ganted at Tukey Swamp to Edwad Dotey, Samuel Stutevant, Samuel King, John Hamon, Stephen Byant and Joseph Howland. [32] Joseph Howland eceived two aces on the west side of Captain Badfod s fou aces at Monponsett Pond... att the upe end of Tukey swamp... [33] Thomas Cushman, J., was given land southeast of Captain Badfod s meadow. [34] By July 1667, Samuel Stutevant was dissatisfied with his land nea Tukey Swamp and equested a land swap. The gass is geene on the othe side of the fence was tue back then too. The Plymouth clek ecoded: Samuell Stutivant is gaunted to exchange his fifty acees of land gaunted unto him by the Towne fo fifty acees lying att Monponsett pond to the south end of the pond [35] So Samuel Stutevant moved close to Captain William Badfod. The lands of Stutevant and Badfod ae descibed: The lands which I layed out fo Samuell Stutivant Monponsett pond of fifty acees abutting upon fifty acees of M. William Badfod s lying on the east end of the said William Badfods; and is bounded with a Pine tee by the pond syde and Runes eastely fom the cone of the pond to a black oake on the noth syde of the path; and Rangeth southely to a smale blacke oake and soe to a little white oake maked: and so Rangeth by the swamp syde to a blacke oake that standeth on a plaine; which oake is the cone bound answaable to the fomenamed pyne tee by the pond syde; between the said William Badfod and Samuell Stutivant; pme Goge Bonum: The bounds of Capt: William Badfod s land att Monponsett is as followeth; (viz) fifty acees of land bounded on the nothwest with a pyne tee maked by the pond syde; and the westemost bound a smale Rid oake tee maked; the southemost bounds a tee maked standing between him and Samuel Stutivant; and anothe pyne tee maked standing by the ponds syde betwixt Samuel Stutivant and him fo the eastemost bounds Januay 31, 1667/68 [36] William Badfod s fou aces became fifty aces, evidently though a equest to the town that was not ecoded, but was ganted simultaneously with Stutevant s gant. Six months late on Januay 31, 1667/68 othes equested and eceived pemission to vacate thei Winnetuxet lands at Tukey Swamp and move about a mile and a half to Monponsett Pond. The gantees wee moving fathe and fathe noth of the Nemasket Tail. Samuel King, Edwad Dotey, John Andews, Samuel Mylam and Abaham Jackson wee given pemission to take possession of land that was in the Monponsett Pond aea. -7-
o Att the Townmeeting held att the meeting house att Plymouth the one and thitieth day of Januay ann dom Att this meeting libetie was gaunted unto all such as have land gaunted to them att Winnatucksett to Remove thei said gaunts a mile and a halfe [37] fom thei meddows towad Monponsett pond: Saml Kinge ffifty acees of land is gaunted unto Samuell Kinge lying neae to his meddow at Monponsett Pond; Edwd Dotey ffifty acees of land is gaunted unto Edwad Dotey lying neae to his meddow at Monponsett; next unto the ffifty acees of land gaunted unto Samuell Kinge; John Andews & Saml Gaunted unto John Andews and Samuell Mylam to each of them thity acees of upland somwhee about Monponsett ponds if they can find it in any such lands as not gaunted unto any othes; Abaham Jackson Thity acees of land is gaunted unto Abaham Jackson whee John Andews and Samuell Mylam shall have theis if it may be thee had if not not any wheelse whe he can find it; not pejudiciall to othes; within this townshipp [38] Mapping these Geogaphical Featues The above geogaphical infomation is plotted on a topogaphic map on the following page. This map is a composite of two maps fom the United States Geological Suvey: a 1940 map found hee and a 1941 located hee fo the Monponsett aea. The petinent geogaphic infomation follows: 1. Seveal popety ownes moved fom thei oiginal land gants which wee south of Tukey Swamp towad Monponsett Pond. 2. Thei new land was at the uppe end of Tukey swamp. 3. It was at Monponsett Pond to the south end of the pond. 4. Some of the popety bounday makes wee at the side of Monponsett Pond. 5. The next goup of land gants ae in Monponsett Meadow which took its name fom Monponsett Pond. 6. The topogaphic map indicates Monponsett Meadow would need to be west of the elevated idge of land which is west of the uppe end of Tukey Swamp. Conclusion This ecounting of the westwad migation of Plymouth esidents in the time peiod sets the stage fo Alexande Canedy s migation westwad. His land gant will be consideed in the next chapte. -8-
