5 Heitage Headley Cout was oiginally an lizabethan famhouse set within some 300 aces and was gifted to Walte Cunliffe, late 1st Baon Cunliffe and the Goveno of the Bank of ngland by his fathe on the one condition that he would pusue a caee in banking athe than faming. The family fotune had been made by Walte s gandfathe, James Cunliffe, with his development of the Noth asten Railway along which Stevenson s Rocket an. The Gade II Listed mansion and adjoining stables wee completed in 1899 in Jacobean style by dwad Waen fo Walte Cunliffe, built on the foundations of, and including some walls of, ealie buildings. dwad Waen, aticled to G F Bodley, was an all-ound achitect with equal ability to design chuches, colleges, mansion flats and county houses. He woked mainly in a late 17th Centuy o ealy 18th Centuy style and was Maste of the At Wokes Guild in Duing the peiod , the popety was equisitioned as a Canadian Foces Headquates. Afte the Wa, the popety was puchased with funds aised by the Auctionees and state Agents Institutes Royal Ai Foce Pilot and Cews Fund and gifted in tust fo the medical ehabilitation of pilots and ai cew of the Royal Ai Foce. The ole subsequently expanded to cove the medial ehabilitation of all membes of the amed foces.

6 The PROPRTY The Site is cuently used as a militay hospital and ehabilitation unit and thus contains a numbe of buildings and facilities that suppot those functions, as well as offices fo administation, accommodation fo staff and patients, and paking and stoage aeas. The Mansion and Stable Block The Mansion and adjoining fome stables compise a taditional Jacobean styled popety. Located boadly in the cente of the site, the popety has fa eaching views ove the ancient oak woodland of Nowe Wood, a Site of Natue Consevation Impotance ( SNCI ) and to the olling landscape of Headley Heath beyond. Constucted aound 1899 the achitectue of this taditional ed bick building with its buff stone quoins is epitomised by its mosaic fenestation of stone cased tansom and mullion windows set within gand Flemish gables. What is most stiking about this building is the exquisite pesevation of fome caftsmanship and the way in which in spite of all its wondeful vaiety and nuanced design, the building still emains hamonious in chaacte. Cuently used fo a vaiety of puposes, including an Offices Mess, administative office space, cinema and esidential accommodation, the popety is aanged ove basement and thee uppe floos. The inteio has an impessive epetoie of 17th Centuy wooden panelling, the panelled inne entance hall being of especial inteest with its full height bay window, oak Jacobean style chimneypiece, open well stai and fist floo galley. The fome dawing oom, now the ante-oom, has limed chestnut lizabethan jewel panelling and chimneypiece fom Hinchingbooke Hall and a vey fine Jacobean style plaste ceiling by Lauence Tune. The fome smoking oom, now the Mess Ba, is panelled and has a caved chimneypiece with acading on cayatides. The elaboate ceiling in this oom is also by Lauence Tune and depicts Tudo oses, fleu-de-lis and abbits, the latte in ecognition of the family name. On the fist floo most ooms etain panelling and featues, most notably the Comwell Room with its fine panelling and chimneypiece fom the house in St Ives that belonged to Comwell s siste, Robina. In addition, the fome schooloom which lies above the Comwell Room has a ceamic tile map depicting the Noth asten Railway. The attached fome stables which mio the chaacteistics of the main Mansion constucted fom ed bick unde a gabled oof povide a stoe with esidential units and futhe administative offices located above.

8 Residential Accommodation Headley Cout offes a wide ange of esidential accommodation acoss a vaiety of sized buildings which pimaily consist of moe ecent pupose built accommodation. Dale View and Cunliffe Close povide esidential accommodation. Dale View compises 56 semi-detached houses and 1 detached house whilst Cunliffe Close povides 7 detached houses.
