Joseph Pulaski, Casimir's father, was a nobleman a man of power, who owned much land. He taught his children to be good patriots and to love Poland. But, the empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, wanted Poland to be under her rule. Slowly, but surely, she kept getting land and power in Poland. The Pulaski family was against her plan. So, Joseph Pulaski and his three sons fought for Poland's freedom from Russia. Joseph Pulaski and one son died in Poland's fight for freedom. However, Casimir continued fighting until he was captured and sentenced to death. Fortunately, he escaped to France. Meanwhile, Poland was divided by Russia, Prussia and Austria. While in France in 1776 Pulaski met Benjamin Franklin. Ben Franklin came from the American colonies to try to acquire military leaders who could help the Colonists in their fight for freedom from England. Casimir Pulaski was sympathetic to the Americans cause. He agreed to go to the Colonies to assist George Washington and his army. Casimir Pulaski arrived in this country on July, 23, He met General Washington who welcomed his help in fighting the English. On September 1S, 1777, Casimir was made a general of the Cavalry, That meant that he would lead soldiers who rode on horses.into battle. He trained soldiers so well that they became known as "Pulaski's legion." The first battle of "Pulaski's legion" took place in New Jersey in Many of his soldiers did not survive the battle because the English attacked them by surprise. In 1779, "Pulaski's legion" went to South Carolina and won their battle. The last battle of Casimir Pulaski's life was in Savannah, Georgia. He was severely wounded while riding his horse. He was carried away by his soldiers and place on a ship named The Wasp. He received medical treatment on the ship but died two days later on October 11, He was 32 years old. Suffering great losses October 24-The Legion goes to Trenton, then to Sussex Court House and Minsink to fight Indians May 8-The Legion goes to Charleston, where they capture the city September 16- The Legion comes to Savannah, where on October 9,Pulaski was wounded at the battle of Savannah October ll-pulaski dies of his wounds on the ship Wasp.
