2 Afte the holiday season, thee ae a numbe of pogams and events to help ou esidents ecycle thei holiday lights and decoative tees. The Des Plaines Public Woks & Engineeing Depatment is glad to coodinate these sevices fo the community it seves. The Des Plaines Public Woks & Engineeing Depatment is hosting a fee holiday light ecycling event thoughout the months of Januay and Febuay. Lights that will be accepted include C7 and C9 lights, ope lights, mini-lights (icicle lights), LED lights, and extension cods. Residents inteested in ecycling thei old holiday lights should bing items between the hous of 8:30 A.M. and 3:00 P.M., Monday though Fiday, to the Public Woks facility, 1111 Joseph J. Schwab (Campgound) Road. Any holiday light stands still connected to weaths, galand o othe mateial will not be accepted. Thee is no limit to the amount of lights that you may dop off at the Public Woks facility. The holiday lights will be ecycled fo the coppe and plastic mateials. Recycle You Holiday Lights in Januay and Febuay Recycle You Holiday Tees Public Woks and Engineeing will be collecting holiday tees thoughout the City, weathe pemitting, fom Monday, Januay 7, 2019 though Fiday, Januay 11, Bae holiday tees (no decoations, lights, tinsel, o plastic bags) should be at the cubside befoe 7:00 A.M. on Monday, Januay 7, Republic Sevices will collect only thei customes emaining tees though Fiday, Januay 18, weathe pemitting. Tees fozen to the gound cannot be picked up. Afte this time, any bae holiday tees will need to be disposed of in Apil when landscape waste pick-up begins. Duing the winte months, you Public Woks cews ae esponsible fo cleaing appoximately 140 lane miles of oadways. WINTER SNOW INFORMATION Residents coopeation and patience with Public Woks duing snow plowing and salting opeations is appeciated. Please place snow on pakways, leaving the steet fee fo plow tucks. Fo snowfall ove two inches, vehicles must be paked away fom snow outes until snow emoval opeations ae completed. Thee is a pioitization to the winte opeations based on emegency esponse equiements, volume of taffic, and othe citeia. The Depatment pioitizes the City oadways accoding to five categoies. Howeve, once the snow subsides, thee s an easy way to clea you diveway and avoid the deaded second shovel that often happens as snowplows wok to clea oads fo safe passage. Clea an aea upsteam fom you diveway, which would give the snow on the plow a place to go othe than you diveway. This will aid in educing the amount of snow accumulating in the diveway apon afte the snowplow s final clean-up. 6 Chemicals, Medications and Illegal Dumping HAZAOUS WASTE DISPOSAL OPTIONS A mateial is consideed hazadous (chemical) if it s toxic, flammable, coosive o an iitant. Illegal dumping, also known as fly dumping o open dumping, is the disposal of waste in a pohibited aea. Pohibited aeas include vacant lots (public o pivate popeties), alleys, oadways, and wateways. Illegal dumping can contibute to health isks (fo example, ties povide homes to disease-caying mosquitoes) and impede pope dainage, causing flooding and fies. Yea-ound household hazadous (chemical) waste disposal is available though the Illinois Envionmental Potection Agency (IEPA) and the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) at the locations below. 8 Yad Waste Collection YA WASTE AND BRANCH COLLECTION Republic Sevices will collect esidential yad waste fom those esidents eceiving the City s contacted gabage sevices beginning Monday, Apil 1 though Fiday, Decembe 13. Duing these times, esidents will be able to have yad waste picked up weekly on thei egula gabage collection day. YA WASTE includes gass clippings, leaves, plant clippings, twigs, small banches, and bush. Fuits, vegetables, dit, oots, stumps and animal waste ae NOT consideed yad waste and should be disposed of as efuse. Banch Collection - Weekly Republic Sevices will collect bundled banches beginning Monday, Apil 1 though Fiday, Decembe 13. Within these dates, esidents will be able to have banches picked up weekly on thei egula gabage collection day. Items that will not be collected include debis such as stumps, lumbe o lage amounts of tee mateial. Please contact a qualified tee sevice fo appopiate debis emoval. Banches should be less than fou inches in diamete and fou feet in length; banches should be tied in a bundle with sting o twine (no wie o plastic); bundles must not exceed 50 pounds o a total of 24 inches in diamete. Banch Collection - Monthly Public Woks will collect banch clippings May though Septembe. Duing these months, esidents will have a total of five collections, based on zip code. Thee will only be one collection pe zip code, pe month. Residents should have thei banches out by the fist day of collection to ensue pick-up since it may take up to two weeks to collect each zone. If banches ae placed out late, incoectly, o cannot be eached, collection will not be attempted again until the next month. Banches will not be collected on City holidays. Banches should be two feet o longe, cleanly cut (without oots), and smalle than six inches in diamete, with cut ends pointing to the cub. Easy Guidelines... Yad waste should be placed in 32-gallon containes with secue lids and handles, maked with 12-inch ed X on the bodies of the containes, o placed in 2-ply yad waste pape bags. Yad waste will not be accepted if placed in plastic bags, cadboad boxes, o egula gabage containes. When filled, yad waste containes and bags must not exceed 50 pounds. It s Not Too Late... 10 Residents oftentimes have questions concening the pope disposal of cetain items. Below is a list of some of the most common household items that equie special teatment. Refuse Items Accepted by Republic Sevices Constuction Debis: Constuction debis fom small do-ityouself pojects can be placed in the gabage cat in a way that allows the lid of the cat to close. Mateial that cannot fit into cats is limited to ONE CUBIC YA (3ft x 3ft x 3ft) and should be bundled. Bundles should be no moe than fou feet in length, 50 pounds in weight, and placed at the cubside next to the wheeled cats. Republic Sevices does not collect concete, bick o asphalt. Toilets: Tank and bowl must be sepaated fom one anothe and placed cubside by 6:00 A.M. on the same day as Republic Sevices efuse collection. Capet: Should be tied in olls no longe than fou feet in length and no heavie than 50 pounds in weight. The olls should be placed at the cubside next to the wheeled cats fo pick-up. Household Bulk Gabage: Mattesses, box spings, couches, lawn cae equipment, BBQ gills (with popane tanks emoved), snow blowes, shovels, toys, wate softenes, and empty wate heates may be placed cubside fo esidents eceiving the City s contacted gabage sevices. Please place items out by 6:00 A.M. on the same day as efuse collection. Thee is a limit of ONE bulk item o appliance each week. Household Appliances: Republic Sevices collects efigeatos, feezes, washes, and dyes as long as the doos ae emoved. Place the appliance cubside by 6:00 A.M. on the same day as efuse collection. Othe local gaages may also accept these types of items. The Fisbie Senio Cente is home to the Once & Again Resale Shop, located at 50 E. Nothwest Highway. Once & Again is a not-fo-pofit entity that focuses on eusing instead of ecycling. Receipts acknowledging donations ae povided fo tax puposes. Extemely lage donations may equie special accommodations, so please call in advance of a lage dop-off. 14 CURBSIDE WASTE COLLECTION Residential Sevice Infomation The City of Des Plaines enteed into an ageement with Republic Sevices to povide compehensive tash, ecyclables and yad waste collection pogams. These pogams ae designed to encouage ecycling and waste eduction, educe litte in ou neighbohoods and ensue that waste is disposed of in an envionmentally-esponsible manne. Questions egading this sevice can be answeed by calling Republic Sevices diectly at o visiting Cats and Containes All efuse, ecycling, and yad waste in the City of Des Plaines is collected on the same day. All designated items must be placed in the appopiate cats with lids closed gabage in geen cats, ecycling in blue cats. The cats should be easy to access and fee of any items placed on top of the lids o in font of the cats. Detailed yad waste infomation can be found on the Apil page of this calenda. Cats should be placed cubside on the pakway (with wheels facing towad the house) befoe 6:00 A.M. on collection day to ensue pickup, but placement should occu no ealie than 4:00 P.M. the day befoe collection. Residents ae asked to leave a two-foot sepaation between cats and between each cat and any othe fixed objects such as mailboxes o tees. Cubside containes should be completely full and the lids secuely closed befoe placing any exta items next to the cats. In all cases, the containes must be emoved fom the cub by the end of collection day. Refuse containes should not be stoed in font yads. Schwab (Campgound) Road. The City s contacted ecycling company will wipe all compute had dives to the National Institute of andads & Technology (NIST) standads. IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT HOUSEHOLD PAINT: Household paint cannot be accepted fo ecycling at the Public Woks building. Howeve, latex paint can be died out in a ventilated aea befoe being discaded into the gabage. Oilbased and lead paint can be bought to a household hazadous waste collection cente. The following items fo ecycling ae to be placed in Republic Sevices blue ecycling cats on cubside collection days. Fo you convenience, the following mateials may be placed in the cats, but do not need to be sepaated: Metals: Aluminum cans, clean foil, tin/steel/bi-metal cans, and empty steel aeosol cans. Glass: Clea and coloed glass containes. Pape: Milk/juice catons, dink boxes, newspape, junk mail, telephone books, and chip boad. Cougated cadboad, including boxes, should be cut into 2 x 2 pieces and tied o placed in pape bags. Please see the Apil calenda page fo moe infomation. OPTION #2 - Leaf op Off at Public Woks Facility The City s Public Woks Depatment, located at 1111 Joseph J. Schwab (Campgound) Road, will accept leaves fom Monday, Octobe 21 though Fiday, Decembe 13. Hous fo dop-off ae between 9:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M., Monday though Fiday. Only leaves can be accepted duing this time. Residents can empty thei containe in the designated aea conveniently located on the noth side of the Public Woks facility. Yad waste such as gass clippings, banches, etc. should be placed cubside fo yad waste disposal. To maintain the pope flow of stomwate, oadside ditches, guttes, and sewes must emain clea of leaves. This seasonal in-house pogam povides esidential leaf collection stating Monday, Octobe 21 and continuing though ealy Decembe, weathe pemitting. Pick-up days ae diectly elated to a esidence s efuse pick-up day. If a home s efuse is collected on Mondays, it is consideed to be located in Zone 1; Tuesdays, Zone 2; Wednesdays, Zone 3; and so on. If leaf collection and snow emoval seasons ovelap, snow emoval will take pioity. Exact leaf collection dates ae noted on the appopiate calenda pages. To paticipate, leaves need to be aked into the steet by 6:00 A.M. on the scheduled pick-up date.
