A Word from the Senior Chapter Directors Tony & Lori Douglas March is here, already a ¼ of the year almost gone. Don t believe any of our Chapter made it to the Sweetheart Ball. We had a lot of the members getting repaired if you know what I mean. We had several that had to go into the hospital, but they are all at home now recovering. I told one or two of them the other day, man when we get on up in age, our bodies start falling apart. Don t know how many are going to make it to Chapter Y s Fun Day, but I hope some of the Chapter does. It comes up the 21 st of March. Check TN GWRRA for the place it will be held at. I hope to go and have some FUN, FUN, FUN!! Jeff, Shari and I are registered for Spring Fling, can t hardly wait! We always have a ton of FUN at Spring Fling. I know a few that stated they were no going, but I am looking for several of the Chapter to go. If you have not registered yet, get it in quick. It s just next month and approaching fast. I think Gary has something in-store for Charlie Huffman and me. You will have to come to see what is going to happen. I can tell you this; it s going to be FUN, FUNNY and a CHALLENGE! So come on and let s go to Spring Fling and have a BALL!! It s time to get out and start visiting other Chapters. I have been cooped up for about 7-8 months. So, as for me, I am going to start going to visit other Chapters to have some FUN and to get out of the house. I hoping to start riding soon, I think Billy Mullins has some trips lined up for us to go on and some dinner rides. So, watch for Chapter N to show up at your meeting. So, until next time 2 P age

A Word from the Assistant Chapter Directors Reginald & Kimberly Seymour It s March Madness everyone and next month is Spring Fling. We hope everyone is excited about it and have registered. Like last year, Spring Fling will be held in East Ridge, TN (right outside of Chattanooga) April 23 25, The TN District Team has planned a lot of activities and we hope you are ready for that Southern Family Reunion! Last month, we had several visitors from the District staff, Chapter TN- A, TN Q, and chapter TN-Y. We were so glad they came that we played a game of name the Famous Couples with them. We all had a ball and a bunch of laughs. We always enjoy our guest and extend the invitation for other chapters and riders to visit us at any of our gatherings and chapter functions. Remember Chapter TN- Y Annual Fun Day to Benefit St Jude s Children s Research Hospital is March 21 st from 9am 3pm at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2303 Jones Boulevard, Murfreesboro, TN. Kimberly and I will be attending and hope others in our chapter will attend. We have had some funny weather and hope the weather will be pleasant enough for us to ride our Goldwing; this will be the first ride of the year for us. Let s keep our fingers crossed! 3 P age

Rider s Educator News (Vacant) Motorcyclists fatalities have steadily increased over the past decade. In fact, in 2007, there was a seven percent increase in fatalities from 4,837 in 2006, to 5,154. Per vehicle mile traveled in 2007, motorcyclists were about 37 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle traffic crash and nine times more likely to be injured. Helmet Use In the past five years, motorcycle helmet use has been increasing slowly but steadily increased from 48 percent in 2005 to 67 percent in NHTSA estimates that helmets saved the lives of 1,829 motorcyclists in If all motorcyclists had worn helmets, an additional 823 lives could have been saved. Licensing Issues One out of four motorcycle riders (25%) involved in fatal crashes in 2008 were riding their vehicles with invalid licenses at the time of the collision, while only 12 percent of drivers of passenger vehicles in fatal crashes did not have valid licenses. Impaired Riding In 2008, 30 percent of all fatally injured motorcycle riders had BAC levels of.08 g/dl or higher. Forty-three percent of motorcycle riders who died in single-vehicle crashes had BAC levels of.08 or higher. Speeding In 2008, 35 percent of all motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes were speeding, compared to 23 percent for passenger car drivers, 19 percent for light-truck drivers, and 8 percent for large-truck drivers. States can use this type of information to help them find the right mix of rider education, enforcement and laws to decrease deaths and injuries resulting from motorcycle crashes. Current state approaches to address motorcycle safety include: Mandatory rider education courses Special endorsements on driver licenses Reducing the number of impaired motorcyclists Increasing motorist awareness of motorcycles Increasing helmet use through education and/or legislation 4 P age

2015 Chapter Couple of the Year Billy & Shirley Mullins GREETINGS GOLDWINGERS!!! Hope this finds everyone well after the holidays. First of all we want to thank Chapter N for selecting us couple of the year for It is an honor to represent the chapter. We had a very nice chapter christmas party. Lots of fun and fellowship, also good food. Now hopefully everyone is looking forward to Spring Fling and later on Wing Ding in Huntsville. Riding season will soon be here. Looking forward to that. We hope everyone has a happy and blessed new year. International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday. Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honors the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. International Women's Day(IWD) has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google some years even changes its logo on its global search pages. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status. The United States even designates the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'. So make a difference, think globally and act locally!! Make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding. 6 P age

WHO WAS ST. PATRICK The history of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who was born in the second half of the 4th century, is inevitably sketchy. Even his year of birth is uncertain, with some scholars hitting on 373 while others calculate 390. Similarly, the place where St Patrick was born cannot be confirmed. It is known that he was raised near a village called Banna Vemta Burniae but its location cannot be identified. It may have been lowland Scotland but is equally likely to have been Wales, which was under Roman control at the time. Patrick's real name was probably Maewyn Succat. His father, Calpornius, was a Roman-British army officer and a deacon. Despite this family involvement in the church, the young Patrick was not a believer. His life was ordinary, and completely unexceptional, until the age of 16. But dramatic events then occurred which set the history of St Patrick, and the history of Ireland, on a new course. The young lad was kidnapped, along with many others, by Irish pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. According to his autobiographical Confessio, which survives, the next six years were spent imprisoned in the north of the island and he worked as a herdsmen of sheep and pigs on Mount Slemish in Co. Antrim. During this period, he became increasingly religious. He considered his kidnapping and imprisonment as a punishment for his lack of faith and spent a lot of time in prayer. After a vision led him to stow away on a boat bound for Britain, Patrick escaped back to his family. There he had a dream that the Irish were calling him back to Ireland to tell them about God. This inspired him to return to Ireland as a priest, but not immediately. At this point he didn't feel adequately prepared for a life as a missionary. His studies took him to France where he was trained in a monastery, possibly under St Germain, the bishop of Auxerre, and he dedicated this period of his life to learning. It was some 12 years before he returned to Irish shores as a bishop sent with the Pope's blessing. The next chapter of the history of St Patrick is better known than his earlier life. He landed at Strangford Loch, Co. Down. Although he is often credited with having brought Christianity to Ireland, he was not the first to have done so. An earlier mission had seen Palladius preach to the Irish. Patrick's success lay in the scale of his conversion of the native Irish, most of whom were pagans. They also spoke Irish, so he must have learned the language in order to communicate with them so convincingly. Of course, it wasn't all plain sailing. The history of St Patrick is littered with periods of imprisonment when his teachings had upset local chieftains or Celtic Druids, but he always escaped or gained freedom by presenting his captors with gifts. For twenty years he travelled the length and breadth of the island, baptising people and establishing monasteries, schools and churches as he went. By the time he died, on 17 March 461 (or 493, depending on which date you started your calculation), he left behind an organised church, the see of Armagh, and an island of Christians. This date 17 March has been commemorated as St Patrick's Day ever since. He was buried either in Downpatrick, Co Down, or in Armagh. 7 P age

From the Editor Kimberly Seymour March is here and last month, the groundhog saw it s shadow. So we all know what that means ugh! I am ready for some warmer weather so I can shed some of this winter gear a lot of this winter gear. I m old school, so I have being adorning my long johns, tights, undershirt, hat, gloves, boots, and scarf; wrapped up tight! The only great thing about this weather is that when it is bad I get to stay home from work. Until next month I will leave you with a Did you know! Did you know the word March does not have to do from the homonym, which means to walk deliberately. Instead, the name of the month dates back the Roman calendar. March was named for Mars, the Roman god of war. March was the first month of the year until the Gregorian calendar began to be used in The month was called Hlyda or Lide in Old English, which is a reference to the loud winds. An old proverb says, March comes in a like a lion, and goes out like a lamb, which is reference to winter ending and spring beginning. Another popular saying is "March is mad as a hare," which is a reference to the animals fighting each other. Not only is March Women s History Month, but it s also American Red Cross Month and Fire Prevention Month. Other popular holidays are Read Across America (March 2, which is Dr. Seuss birthday), St. Patrick s Day (March 17), Pi Day (March 14), Daylights Saving Day, Purim, and sometimes Easter even happens during the month. People born in the beginning and middle of March are Pisces. Those born from March 21 on are Aries. Pisces are ruled by Neptune, which makes them dreamy, creative and intuitive. Aries are ruled by Mars, which makes them energetic, daring and spontaneous. Aquamarine and the bloodstone are the birthstones for March. Both stones stand for courage. There are different reports about the true "birth flower." Some says it's the daffodil and others say it's violet. 9 P age

He works hard, doesn't smoke, and he hasn't so much as looked at a woman in over two years.' Lorna responds, 'Well, my Francis is a saint himself. Not only hasn't he not looked at a woman in over three years, but he hasn't touched a drop of liquor in all that time.' 'My word,' says Kate, 'You must be so proud.' 'I am,' announces Lorna, 'And when he's paroled next month, I'm going to throw him a big party.' 13 Encouraging Words from the District Director ENCOURING WORDS FROM District Director Enlightening remarks from the District Director, or the Medication is wearing off Wow only one month away from Spring Fling! Is everyone ready? We need all of you there. If you have not registered better get it in. We think we have a little something for everyone. I want to thank everyone who attended the Sweet Heart Ball, Couple of the Year Selection. Dianne, Boyd and Patti did a great job putting everything together. The couples that were in the selection process did a great job. Sure glad that I did not have to make that decision. A special thanks goes out to our esteem judges who traveled from Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina to be part of our program. Of course congratulation goes to Allan and Dottie Wessels as our new 2015 Couple of the Year. Thanks to all the chapters that brought baskets to be auctioned to help with the COY s travel expenses as they travel around the state. The auction brought in about $ dollars and the cake walk brought in another $ dollars. A great job was done by our DJ s Ivan and Leesa Coburn who just happen to be CD s from W2. We had a ball at the dance. This was our first year putting this together so it was a learning experience. We had a few glitches but all in all everything worked out. We did forget to give out the Web Master Plaque and that will be given out at Spring Fling.Patti is already working on TO BE RESCHULED Kentucky District has challenged us again to participate in the Great Train Ride in Stern s Kentucky on April 11. The last time we did this we beat Kentucky, so they are gearing up to beat us. How many of you will join us in Sterns and ride the train down the gorge, then go on a ride to Cumberland Falls State park for lunch. **More information to come later. Gary and Patti 13 P age

National News Bill & Dea Ann Gray GWRRA Deputy Director-Central US GWRRA IS NOT FUN ANYMORE! WHAT?? Did I just say that? No, of course not, but I heard it from a Member recently. My first question was WHY? (I was really thinking: "Do you not enjoy riding anymore? Have you met your quota of friends?") My next question: "WHY DID YOU JOIN GWRRA?" This caught them off guard and their answer was "friends asked us to join!" They added that this began a journey of some of the most memorable times in their lives. Scrapbook after scrapbook of memories! "What changed?" I asked. "GWRRA is asking too much of its Members and taking the fun out." I explained "GWRRA is asking the same thing today as it did when you joined. We just want you to have fun with friends and ride safe! You certainly have the option to volunteer and get as involved as you want or just be a JAM!" YOU are in control of your fun, not GWRRA." Before long we were all smiles and everything seemed OK after that. What is GWRRA?? It is you, me and all Members from around the world. Some with titles, most without, but first and foremost, we are all MEMBERS of the largest single marquee motorcycle organization in the world (I love saying that!) Our Officers, and I'm speaking of Chapter Directors, District Directors, Region Directors and so on, have the responsibility of helping to provide opportunities for everyone to enjoy GWRRA and be a safer rider. We all ride what everyone knows as the ultimate luxury touring motorcycle (I love saying that too!) Let's enjoy it every chance we get, be safe and share your experiences with others! 14 P age
