2 From the Director s Track Can you believe it s July? Wow the 7 th month of the year already, time sure flies when you re having FUN! We are only a month away from the BLAST our District Convention. Really looking forward to it and hoping for a big turn out from all of the Chapters here in Kentucky. Remember even though it is called the District convention it is OUR convention. It is a success only if WE participate and show up to have FUN! There will be lots of FUN things to do and even some new sites to see since the venue has been moved to Cave City Kentucky. Whether you come for the entire weekend of the FUN or just a day visit, come on out and support your convention and have some FUN! The dates are August 19 th thru 20 th. So as I started out with it is July, we have rides scheduled, it will be HOT for some of those rides so what do we do? We hydrate of course and wear sun block and protect ourselves from the sun as much as possible. So let s ride and have FUN and be safe this month! Come join us for all of the rides or as many as you would like, we do have FUN and we never ever get lost, maybe turned around a little, but never lost. Once again I get to proudly announce that our Chapter Newsletter has been selected for the Newsletter of the month for June 2016 AND the Second Quarter News Letter winner!!!! Until next time Yours in FUN! John and Beth Flaherty Assistant Chapter Director Well not much to report this month. Alan and I didn't get to ride. He did get to ride to June's gathering and I was glad he did. I hope to be riding again by August. My surgery went well on the 27 and I am following Dr's. orders lots of walking. Hope to be with him at the July 9th gathering it will be nice to see you all. Since we don't have much to say will leave you with a little joke. Did you hear about the 2 antennas that got married? It was a nice ceremony... but the reception was amazing! Have fun, ride safe and ride often. Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter July

3 From the Educator s Headlights Happy July everyone. I just returned from taking a group of unruly escaped convicts on vacation through the Appalachian Mountains to Myrtle Beach and back. Oh wait, that was my grandchildren. Since we have the unfortunate lack of financial stature to afford a 5 passenger Goldwing with beds and bathroom facilities I was forced to drive the RV. The RV and I have many things in common. We are both old, we are both cheap and we are both high maintenance items. This particular rolling cartoon player is a 36 foot class A bus with a diesel engine. Since I prefer to invest in things like gas for the Goldwings I haven t yet purchased the Garmin Truck Pro I ve threatened to buy for the last two years. Instead I have a cheaper version which delights in playing pranks on its owner like completely fabricating arrival times and selecting rattlesnake paths when the freeway would have been much faster and easier. To get to the first campground, however, there wasn t much choice but to run up a rattlesnake path along a river. It was a perfect motorcycle road, but a bit challenging for a 102 wide 36 foot long underpowered traveling obstruction. To be fair, I did a pretty fair job of keeping close to the speed limit so we didn t accumulate too many followers. Apparently land is cheaper in the middle of nowhere and campgrounds need cheap land, so we ended up having to access the campground via 12 miles of rattlesnake path. It occurred to me that this was exactly the kind of road I would choose to travel on the motorcycle. However, I was in a bus. Had I been on a motorcycle, I would have had to contend with someone like me who not only took up ALL the lane but also was too big to see around. What do you do? Pull off and wait until the RV gets far enough ahead that you can run at your speed for a while, hang around at a greatly reduced speed hoping they will turn off or some passing lane will magically appear? We did encounter a similar situation on a ride with an old man who was tremendously fond of second gear and a road that no passing availability whatever. In that case, the leader elected to slow the ride to the car driver s speed. That made it harder for those of us on two wheelers who fall over if our speed drops too low, but usually he kept it to nearly 20 mph. What did we learn? Patience. Yes, we could have passed on the double yellow line, used our CB s to make sure that the opposing lane was clear and left the driver far behind, but that s not what we do. We ride safe and obey the law. Patience isn t always easy. When the air is hot and traffic is low we just want to go, but riding in an unsafe manner is contrary to what we teach others. We lead by example. We wear helmets when others do not. We wear all the protective gear even when it s hot out. We may arrive late, but we ride safely and we arrive together. We can t out muscle the RV in front of us. We can only hope he is a skilled driver, assume he is a terrible driver and give him a lot of room. He s likely running the same roads we are, but we re having a MUCH better time. Ride safe. Your Chapter Educator. Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter July

4 Membership Enhancement Coordinator The Lazy, Hazy, Crazy days of Summer! As I write this the temperature has broken, the humidity is behaving itself, and this can only be described as a beautiful day. My only complaint is that I am not astride my trike with my best girl behind me. There will be so many distractions, commitments and obligations as this times passes. I hope you will be able to make the most of all of the opportunities to ride that come your way. Couple of the Year Hello All! We have not had as busy a month this time around. We are still having fun and enjoying our time as your Couple of the Year! It s July the last month to run after Clyde and try to make him ours to keep after the Blast. Speaking of the Blast, John and I hope that a bunch of you come out on Saturday morning and support us through the District Couple of the Year selection. We are looking forward to that and keeping our fingers crossed. It sure would be nice to be looking out through the crowd at a bunch of our Chapter. 17 Region News Region Couple Thoughts Hello Summer! Wow, is it really summertime already? What a fantastic year this is turning out to be, full of FUN and friends and great events! It was fantastic to attend Spring Fling on its return to Pigeon Forge, and the Region Ride N in Marion, Virginia was a wonderful success this is definitely shaping up to be a truly outstanding rally season! We do want to take a moment to say how honored we are to have been asked to serve as the Couple of the Year Program Coordinators for Region N. We are really excited about the great class of couples this year, and about the opportunity to help make the Region Couple of the Year Selection in November a great success! We will be reaching out to the District Couples, District MECs and District Directors with a first look at information about this year s Selection, including an initial timeline so that everyone can start making plans. Go ahead and mark your calendars for November 4 th and 5 th and come join us in Johnson City, Tennessee to support your District Couple of the Year in their bid to become the Region N Couple of the Year for ! Ah, but there s still lots of time before November, though! There are several events scheduled for or honoring the couples of the year this season. Here are the ones we know of so far within the Region if you know of one we don t have listed, please drop us a line and let us know so we can get the word out: 25 June North Carolina Couple of the Year Retreat 622 Corregidor St (in the Community Room), Mebane, North Carolina 6 Aug Virginia All-Chapter Picnic, honoring the Virginia 2016 Chapter Couples White Bank Park (Pavilion #1), Colonial Heights, Virginia 20 Aug Kentucky District Couple of the Year Selection at the Kentucky Blast District Convention, Aug 19-20, Cave City, Kentucky 23 Sep North Carolina District Couple of the Year Selection at Wings Over the Smokies North Carolina District Rally, Sep 22-24, Acquoni Expo Center, Cherokee, North Carolina 7 Oct Virginia District Couple of the Year Selection at the Rally in the Valley Virginia District Rally, Oct 6-8, Tanglewood Holiday Inn, Roanoke, Virginia Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter July

18 And don t forget the FUN of chasing plaques and mascots, attending events, visiting other chapters, and just getting out to ride! There are so many opportunities to make great memories, and we are looking forward to seeing each of you and sharing great times with you! Ride safe, Ride often, Ride together Allen and Dottie Wessels Region N Couple of the Year National News Missed Opportunities There are two terms advertising/marketing folks use to measure success; impressions and CAC or Customer Acquisition Cost. I m telling you this because I was missing out on both and the fix is really, really simple. My story. On a recent 1600-mile road trip through New Mexico and Texas, I was approached several times by curious travelers asking about or commenting on my Wing or motorcycling in general. We ve all had that experience and sometimes it s necessary to add extra time to our projected schedule because we know the Gold Wing attracts attention and folks like to chat. So we talk about motorcycles. But, here is where impressions enters the picture. My missed opportunity was that I was dressed in appropriate riding clothes with no identification as to my membership in GWRRA! What if I had had on a T-shirt with the GWRRA logo on the front, or my chapter colors, or a hat with GWRRA emblazoned on the front? Think about impressions. Even though the conversation may not have been about GWRRA, the impression is still there. The next step is that your conversation buddy goes home and later talks with friends about this cool looking motorcycle and the great folks he/she met at the gas station. Now there are 2 or 3 or 4 impressions. And here s the good part. The Customer Acquisition Cost is Zero! Now let s look at some numbers. The last time we had Wing Ding in Billings Montana, there were just short of 10,000 of us there. And of those 10,000, how many times did some stop for the night on the way? And for gas? And at a restaurant? I guess you have my drift by now. We have the opportunity to make thousands of impressions going to and from just one annual event. What if we wore our colors on all of our rides even when it s not a GW event? And our CAC is still...zero. There are billion dollar corporations out there that would love to get even close to what we can accomplish for ourselves. So now, instead of saving my GW duds just to wear at a rally or a meeting, I wear them to and from and don t think about missed opportunities. And just as a bonus, taking a hint from my MEP friends, I know that, just like advertising, impressions lead to sales, so I also have a membership application handy, just in case one of those conversation buddies is a fellow rider. 20 The Chapter Chef Chicken and Dumplin's about 3 cups cooked chicken 6-8 cups chicken broth 2 cups flour 2 Tbs. butter 1/2 tsp. baking powder salt to taste (I just shake some in) about a cup of milk, maybe a bit less In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a fork or pastry blender. Stir in the milk, mixing with a fork until the dough forms a ball. Heavily flour a work surface. You ll need a rolling pin and something to cut the dumplings with. I like to use a pizza cutter. I also like to use a small spatula to lift the dumplings off the cutting surface. Roll the dough out thin with a heavily floured rolling pin. Dip your cutter in flour and cut the dumplings in squares about 2 x2. It s okay for them not to be exact. Just eye ball it. Some will be bigger, some smaller, some shaped funny. Use the floured spatula to put them on a heavily floured plate. Just keep flouring between the layers of dumplings. If they will be cooked soon, this method works well. If I m going to cook them later in the day I layer them on a cookie sheet with wax paper between and lots of flour. You can also freeze them like this and then transfer them to a ziplock bag. To cook them, bring the broth to a boil. Drop the dumplings in one at a time, stirring while you add them. The extra flour on them will help thicken the broth. Cook them for about minutes or until they not doughy tasting. Add the cooked chicken to the pot and you re done!
