From the Director s Track Hello Chapter A! It s May and what a busy month we have as a Chapter and as a District! On the 14 th we have our Chapter Gathering. I have scheduled no ride after the Gathering, Beth and I have a graduation to attend after we get together, if someone would like to lead a ride for the group please speak up. I will throw it on the calendar and go from there. So on 20 th and 21 st we have both the District Ride In at the Elizabethtown Crossroad Camp Ground, and the Region Ride N in Hungry Mother State Park in Marion Va. Beth and I and a few others will be going to Virginia and John and Sheila Main are planning on the E- town visit. Please feel free to join either group for what I know will be a FUN weekend! Then on the 27 th we have the District Ride where we will ride the perimeter of West Virginia. Mike VanHoose has informed me that there will be a lot of riders for this, if you plan on going plan on lots of FUN on this trip as well. I m still looking for ride suggestions so please feel free to send them to me. Well until next time... Yours in FUN! John and Beth Flaherty PS: I really enjoy opening my and seeing this: Hello Jack, Lisa & KY Directors/ MEPCs, We would like to inform you that the winner of the Newsletter of the Month for April, 2016 is Chapter A. Thank You So Much, Jerry & Luanne Williams KY District MEPC PSS, I kind of like this also! well. Recipes, rides, maps, restaurants reviews etc. We can always find a place for them and you get participation points. Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

Assistant Chapter Director Well the month of April was good to us. We managed to get in a couple of chapter rides and a couple of our own. On the first we went to Chapter H to retrieve the Region plaque but we were not successful. The capture went to a chapter in TN. On the second we went on a WINDY (and that is putting it mild) ride to The Whistle Stop. When we got there found out it was at least a 2 hour wait just to be seated. We were all hungry so looked up on the GPS for an alternative. Found a neat little restaurant an headed out. After missing a turn we finally arrived and ordered. Food wasn t bad but they were short staffed so it took a while. Next on the 16 th we left on an early morning ride for Moonshine IL. What an adventure Alan attempted to lead but we had only followed someone. Our GPS did something crazy out there in the middle of the corn fields so we got close and then had John and his GPS get us there. If you have never been there it s well worth the trip. Ask Bruce. On the 17 th Alan and I did a short ride (165 miles) on a route we call the loop. It s a nice ride from New Albany IN out to Corydon up to Salem over to Charlestown then down to New Albany. On the 23 Alan and I took a trip to Clabber Girl museum in Terre Haute IN. Nice little ride around 325 mile round trip. Had lunch toured the museum and then headed home. On the way home we found a State park we had been wanting to go to. Might make a good brown bag ride sometime. Then the rain came and it was the end of April. Great month though hope May brings the same. We have lots planned. Hope you all are able to join us. Whatever you do enjoy it and remember it s not about the destination it s all about the ride. Ride safe and often. Donna & Alan Nelson Chapter Assistant Directors From the Educator s Headlights Welcome May; a time when April showers bring forth the May flowers; when the cold mornings and evenings yield to more temperate conditions; when the abrupt and sometimes violent rain showers become a little less frequent and the opportunities to ride become more plentiful. May is motorcycle awareness month, when Look twice, save a live hopefully is heard more than Officer, I just didn t see the motorcycle. Motorcycles are out there in force now; not just the big cruisers with full windscreens and air wings to deflect the chilly wind, but also the scooters, the crotch rockets and the V-Twins. We wave as we Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

pass on the road, we rib each other about our individual bike of choice, but we all share the same love of riding. As riders ourselves, we know to look twice at intersections, to leave extra space when following motorcycles because they can brake much faster than cars can and are more susceptible to wind gusts and road debris. We use our experience as riders to make us better drivers. To the four wheelers out there, though, we are still too small, too fast and too unlike what they are expecting to see at intersections. We can t take for granted that they see us. Watch their front tires at intersections to make sure they are stopped and they remain stopped until you pass safely through. There are some other tips we should keep in mind when riding. Never use drugs or alcohol when riding. This includes prescription drugs which can make you drowsy or impair reaction time. All the gear, all the time. We dress for the slide, not the ride. Better to sweat than to have to suffer through a skin graft. Looking back over the years at all the times I personally violated that advice it s a wonder I m still here. Keep aware of the world around you. That means your head is on a swivel and your mirrors are your life line. Don t think that you re safe because you re in the middle of a group. Your safety and the safety of your rider is your responsibility. Make sure that both you and your machine are in top operating condition. That includes performing a proper inspection on the motorcycle and honest self-reflection on your own health status. We need to put an emphasis on training; be it in a parking lot working on our low speed cornering or on a safe piece of road where we can practice swerving around potholes, road kill or any other hazard; real or imaginary. When we stop we need to leave the bike in first just in case we have to jump out of the way of someone who doesn t stop. None of this is new. All of this has been said many, many times. We just need to keep it in the front of our minds so that in case we need these techniques they will be there when we need them. Enjoy the warm weather. Let s get some miles on these steel beasts and always. Ride safe. John Main Educator Chapter A Membership Enhancement Coordinator Heavenly Sunlight! I am sure that I am not alone in welcoming the return of warm weather. Time to shake out the winter doldrums and search out new venues to explore. As you get used to the wonderful feel of the bike underneath, remember that the other vehicles are having to get used to seeing us around and sharing the road. I am definitely looking forward to seeing everyone on rides. As you come across other friends be sure to spread the word and invite them along. Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

On the Lighter Side. Things you REALLY don't want to hear your mechanic say Uh-oh. Oh Shoot! What the heck?! That's soooo bizarre. Wow!! Look at this! Hey!! Goldwings don't do this! Mechanic's certificate of training? What's that? Well, it's doing SOMETHING. Wow... That seemed funny. I got a better job at Honda. State inspection rules say. Sorry, the parts you ordered are no longer kept in stock by the company. Damn! It didn't do that a minute ago. Damn, and I just bought that Coke. I removed a gasket and now there's LOTS of clearance. Hey, do you smell something? Hmmm! What's that grinding sound? I have never seen one do THAT before. I don't think it should be doing that. I remember the last time I saw it do that. My vacation starts tomorrow. Oops! (said in a quiet, almost surprised voice). Hmm, maybe if I do this. Hmmm, curious. We're standardizing on metric. I wonder where THIS nut goes? (Looking at a Goldwing) What's this switch for anyway? If I knew it wasn't going to work, I would have tested it sooner. The air cleaner isn't supposed to leak brown gunk, is it? AND... Boy, it's a lot easier when you know what you're doing! Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

April Rides for Chapter A Back Home Restaurant via WhistleStop Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

Interesting day and ride. Originally planned for Whistle Stop, one of our favorites, we arrived and got parked only to find a 2 hour long wait to get seated. A quick check by Alan discovered Back Home Restaurant in E'town, so off we go! Great place, nice atmosphere, good meals. The ride home was interesting as well, and we learned to check wind velocity also before a ride. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph will move even a Goldwing trike a few feet in a direction you were not intending. Chapter A ride to Chapter H Gathering Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

District News May 20th through May 21st Ride-In Elizabethtown, Kentucky May 20 th through May 21st 2016 Region Ride N Hungry Mother State Park 2854 Park Blvd, Marion, Va District Ride - Perimeter of West Virginia May 27th - May 30th, 2016 August 19 through August 20 WING N THE CAVES Kentucky District Convention "The Blast" Cave City, Kentucky Region News The Same Old Story I recently went to Daytona, Florida for Bike Week. As usual everyone was enjoying themselves, along with the reunions, fellowship and the sunshine. In all of the time that I've be going to Bike Week, I've never seen or heard an accident. On this trip all of that would change. It was Thursday afternoon on the tenth of March, and in a flash, all of that had suddenly changed. This is how it went down. I was cleaning my Wing and talking to some of the Harley riders in the hotel parking lot. There was another Harley at the entrance to the Ocean Shore Resort parking lot that had been trying to get his bike started for about ten minutes. One of the guys that I was talking to decided to go and see if he could help get the Harley started. Just as he reached the guy with the starting problem, there was an extremely loud crashing sound of metal being bent and hitting the ground. Now if you have never been to Bike Week in Daytona, let me tell you there are thousands of Motorcycles going up and down A1A Beachfront Avenue all day and most of the night. As it was, the driver of a vehicle crossed over in front of oncoming traffic and hit a rider on a Harley. Of course, when the Police got there in about three minutes, the gentleman in the car said those most famous four words, "I Didn't See Him". It was to no avail, because there were about fifty bikers that witnessed the Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

accident. Now with all of this said, we all need to be more attentive to what is going on in our environment. Remember, bright reflective clothing and all of the gear all of the time pays off! Think Motorist Awareness! If you don't then who will? Ride safe and maybe I'll see you on the road. D, a regular contributor to Motorcycle Consumer News, wrote about a 63-year old man who, after 34 years of not riding, bought a Gold Wing so he could ride with his adult son. But, before just going on a ride, he knew he had to get in better shape physically, so he began to exercise and watch his diet. He did an Iron Butt Rally at 75 and at the time of writing was still riding regularly at 82. When his older sister asked when he was going to quit riding and said, You are going to kill yourself. His Derby City Wing Riders Newsletter May

response was Riding that motorcycle has prolonged my life, and with a quality so much better than expected. Remember that sentence the next time someone says something negative about riding at our age. Quantity of life is meaningless without quality of life. And quality of life comes from passion. Here we re talking about riding motorcycles, but it could be about anything that creates a powerful positive feeling inside of you. Webster defines passion as any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate. Love is my joy of riding; the latter is usually my golf game. As a riding buddy and fellow golfer said to me one day, Bob, if we rode motorcycles like we play golf, we d be dead by now. It s passion that is the enemy of depression, stress, and apathy, all markers for a shortened life span. It s passion that gives us a sense that riding improves our quality of life. It s passion that also can improve our quantity of life. Most activities about which we are passionate require some physical, psychological, and or mental effort. We strive to be better riders because it s more fun with the side benefit of being safer. We try to stay healthy so we can tour for days at a time. We try to be physically fit so we can stay in the saddle longer and handle riding situations with clarity and confidence. We enhance our mental acuity through riding techniques, mechanical issues, and skill development. We enhance social well-being through friends, chapters, and riding partners. All combine into a contented lifestyle. If you d like to see how it works, go to TC Bank Dream Rangers on YouTube. Based on a true story, watch five Taiwanese seniors (average age 81), all with arthritis, three with heart disease, one with cancer, change their lives with passion and, of course, motorcycles. I like the ending sentence in the Barnes article. May we all live right up to the end of our lives. And may our love of riding move us to do all of the things that will keep us riding and doing everything else longer. Live long and prosper.
