3 Meeting notes SCMTC February 24 th 2016 The meeting was called to order by President Pat Ehlers at 7:30 pm. The Secretaries report was approved as published in the Bands. Treasurer John Saylor gave his report, concluding that the club finances are in fine shape. Two members did not renew their membership. John will be out of town for the next two meetings. Harvey Bandy will run the raffle during John s absence. Tom Lyons of Bend, Oregon sent a letter stating that, due to the death of his father, he had a 1927 roadster pick-up for sale. He requested our help in setting a price and and selling the car. Pat will refer him to the California Auto Museum for help. Kate Bandy, our Vice President and Tour Director, reports that: This Saturday is the next Awful Waffle and 9 members have signed up to attend. The program is still under discussion; it appears to be examination of the rear axle that Rich Silva donated. The Mother Lode Club Shakedown Tour is April 2. We will join the tour 9:00 am at the El Dorado Town Center, intersection of Rt. 50 and Latrobe Road. The lunch is $12 per person, payable to Kate in advance of the event. The route will go through Ione and visit the Sanders Aeronautics Restoration Service, which restores warbirds and vintage aircraft for clients around the world. May 1 brings the Fair Oaks Fiesta Classic Car show; six members have signed up to attend. If you are interested register on the internet by May 1 for the lowest cost. The internet address is < Dave Pava is sponsoring a two-day tour May 21 and 22. Details of the tour, along with a registration form, appear elsewhere in the Bands. This promises to be a bang-up tour. There are 4½ clubs participating, with some attendees expected from the Bay Area. As many as 50 cars may be attending. The CAM Cruise has been rescheduled to September 10. The Mather Air Show, with the Blue Angels, will be held October 1st and 2nd. There is a possibility that they will want Model T s to display as has been done in the past. Harvey brought us up to date on the Model T for the Blind project. Rick Kasper has donated several parts, a steering column, wheels and a 1926 engine that Harvey has already disassembled and believes is rebuildable at a minimum cost. Many thanks to Rick. Mark O Connor s car has replaced the Bandys' car at the CAM Cavalcade of Cars. This was done to allow Kate, Harvey and their car to attend Harris Center for the Arts Razzle Dazzle 1920 s theme event on March 3. They will be in costume and hopefully recruit members for the club. The members who have cars in the Cavalcade of Cars are meeting March 6 at the Delta King for dinner before retrieving their cars at CAM. All members are invited, Jean Lanham, our Sunshine Lady, reported that all members seem to be well. Dave Eichner tells us that the new director of CAM, Delta Mello, is a country girl who grew up in Amador County. Hal Schedler inquired if the club could contribute more than the $500 already budgeted to the Model T for the Blind project. It looks as though we will need to purchase, or have donated, tires, pistons, battery, spokes. The board will consider the request. Bingo followed. The lucky winners were Wendel Waltz, Dave Eichner, and Marilyn Kaspar. R o d s d a d, a member of the Greatest Generation that immigrated from Missouri to California in 1937 during the Dust Bowl era. Met and courted the love of his life... Ruby! They were married in They raised four children, the youngest is Rod Lewis. A survivor of WWII (a deserving solute to = = Dick Lewis) Dick worked as a County Appraiser and retired at the age of fifty five. One of Dicks passions was restoring old Fords... A Model T and a Model A antique It is 1902 and drivers of streetcars and automobiles are forced to reach out and wipe rain and snow off of their windshields. Enter Mary Anderson: she saw this problem in NYC, and despite the misgivings of men around her, she invented the first windshield wiper which was patented in The windshield wiper of today is not much different from her early design. Unfortunately, she did not make much money off of it and it wasn't until after 4

5 the patent expired in 1920 did automobile companies start including wipers in production. In 1917, another woman patented one of the few major improvements to Anderson's design. Charlotte Bridgwood had invented automatic windshield wipers! She also received very little credit or wealth from it. And just to finish off this story of amazing women inventors: Bridgwood's daughter was none other than early Hollywood star Florence Lawrence, "the Biograph Girl." In 1914, she invented an early turn signal. However, she never patented it or promoted it and signals did not become common until the 1950s. Lawrence, however, is an excellent reminder that even in the early days, women were active participants in the growth of the automobile. According to Lawrence, There are as many women driving cars as men. And infinitely better drivers they make too. Submitted by Dennis Furr After five weeks the Ford Model T D i s p l a y a t t h e California Automobile Museum expired and the participating club member picked up their vehicles. Upon reacquiring possession of their Model T s the reunions were somewhat emotional... Some hugged their cars calling them by name, some sat on the running boards and cried, while others kicked the tires and said, Lets go home Betsy. Awful Waffle keeps SVMTC members coming back for seconds at the breakfast table as well as seconds for Model T maintenance and repair hints. Jeanine demonstrating her Model T split rim tire changing talents. Harris Center For The Arts at Folsom Lake College requested a Ford Model T and a Ford Model A to be displayed on either side of the theaters front entrance to set the atmosphere for the stage performance of Chicago. According to attendees comments SVMTC was well represented. Before picking up their T s members met at Fats Bar and Grill for dinner. 5
