P.O. Box 109, Calimesa, CA PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dennis Martinez Summer is here, and now it's too hot to work on the truck, or that other project, on which I've been procrastinating. Don't you find it difficult to get the motivation going at times? I know I do. Sometimes it's a lot easier to go out to breakfast, or lunch, with friends, instead of finishing that project you started many moons ago. Anyway, onto other items. We had a great time going to, and attending the National Show in Salem. Lisa and I caravanned up with Larry Laughlin, and Mark, Diane, and Henry Christensen. Our first day on the road was eventful. Our first stop was at Kramer Junction, where we toured an antique store, and were lucky enough to get a private tour of the owners collection of vehicles, gas pumps and signs. It was a great collection. We then had a great lunch in Boron, at Domingo's Mexican Restaurant. I had heard good things about the place and it lived up to them. We then toured Boron's historical museum and aviation museum, which was interesting and educational. We then headed to Keene, where I unhitched the toy hauler and then headed up to the Tehachapi Loop, where we got to see a train circle the loop. This is one of the great railroad engineering feats, built over 100 years ago. It is pretty cool to see the front end of a train cross over the rear end of itself. Our last stop that day was a private tour of a high tech dairy in Tulare, where Pete and John Dykstra were nice enough to show us their operation, in addition to Pete's collection of tractors, cars and his immaculate fat cab GMC. If you would like to hear about the rest of our trip, come to the barbecue on August 20 at the California Citrus Park in Riverside. The chapter has reserved a space under cover, and will furnish the burgers and hotdogs. Please bring a side dish or dessert, and don't forget to drive your truck, if possible. It should be a lot of fun, as always. By the way, the National show in Salem was spectacular, with almost 900 trucks in attendance. Happy trucking and have a great summer, Dennis

3 MESSAGE FROM CHAPTER EVENT COORDINATOR Ken Lund 2016 EVENTS FUTURE EVENTS Saturday July 30 Tour of Hal Hays Collection Riverside The San Diego Chapter has planned a turnaround, with the final destination a tour of Hal Hays collection of trucks. If you would like to join them (maybe bring your old iron?), Contact Adam Rossman with the SD The tentative Hays is ~9:30-10:00. Address: 4181 Latham St, Riverside, Saturday August 20 - Annual Picnic/BBQ - Riverside - 10:00am - 3:00pm The annual Picnic/BBQ will be held at the California Citrus State Historical Park. We have reserved a covered shelter and have that area to ourselves. The SoCal Chapter will provide the burgers, dogs, and drinks (possibly hand cranked ice cream, too!). We request participants to bring a side dish, dessert, or anything that will complement the menu. There is room to bring a classic vehicle, if you want. --Admission: $5.00/car entry to park ($4.00 seniors). --Location: 9400 Dufferin Ave, Riverside, CA RSVP: Dennis Martinez or Diane Christensen Sunday October 2 Irwindale Speedway - Truckin for Kids Annual Show Depart Meeting Place 8:00 am. We have been invited to bring our trucks on the Sunday of the event. There are some activities on Saturday, but the main show and drags are on Sunday. We have 12 entry passes and space to have a chapter booth and t-shirt sales. Contact us if you want to bring a truck and/or help at the chapter booth. Maybe even a grudge drag against another member? --Meet nearby just north of the 210 freeway on Camino de la Cantera, at the Irwindale Exit. There is room to park and group the trucks. Arrive early and have breakfast at Farmer Boys or McDonalds We plan to 8:00 am for the speedway. --Speedway: 500 Speedway Dr, Irwindale/ Baldwin Park, Off 610 Fwy --RSVP : Ken Lund October 16 Vista San Diego Chapter Antique Truck Show 9:00 am Let s support the San Diego Chapter and attend their show held at the Tractor Museum in Vista. The show is in conjunction with their Fall Engine and Tractor Show, one of their major events. Enjoy the day looking at trucks and all of the great exhibits and displays, and maybe join in their afternoon parade of tractors, trucks, etc. --We will probably meet in Temecula to caravan (maybe breakfast?) --Admission: $20.00/vehicle --Contact Adam Rossman Location: Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum 2040 Santa Fe Ave, Vista, IDEAS FOR FUTURE EVENTS Does anyone have any ideas of somewhere to go and something to see with our old trucks? In past years we took the old iron out on road trips, including a Ridge Route Run, Lake Mathews to Temecula, tour of Dalton Trucking, etc. The route should be friendly to older or slower vehicles. Maybe finish at a unique or special restaurant instead of BBQ? SoCal is a big place and there must be somewhere we can go within a reasonable distance from a central location. Call Ken or one of the board members with your ideas of something new or maybe a suggestion of a repeat of an old favorite.

This is a requirement of our Southern California Chapter bylaws and National ATHS bylaws to maintain the non-profit 501 c (3) tax exempt status. There are two membership structures in ATHS. National dues of $45 ($55 family) are payable directly to ATHS National headquarters ( in Kansas City, Missouri on your anniversary date of joining ATHS. You are billed by them and will receive a subscription to Wheels of Time magazine. Southern California Chapter dues are $20 per calendar year and are due prior to March 1 of each year and includes bi-monthly issues of the Old Iron Express Newsletter. The Southern California Chapter Board hopes you feel you received something worthwhile out of your Chapter membership this past year and we encourage you to continue your membership for A 2015 near your name on the mailing label for the newsletter means your chapter membership dues are current through If 2015, 2016 or greater appears near your name, you have paid your membership through the end of the respective calendar year.
