Welcome New Members The following new members were approved for membership at the last board meeting: Sam Costello Nelsonville, OH John Horton Logan, OH Sabrina Garufi - Nelsonville, OH Welcome Aboard! Did you know... David McPherson reports that by Oct. 15, Phase I & II of our TAP Grant will be complete. Phase III grant has been approved for $550,000 with only a 5% match, work should be started by mid-late 2017 and we are currently applying for a phase IV... Bob Schmoll reports that in Aug./Sept. we carried 4,215 passengers. This is down about 2,016 from the previous year... Two of our poorer conditioned bi-levels are in process of being scrapped. Scrap funds are being applied to the building of our third open air car... Our income for Sept was $37,685 expenses were $21,668 for a net income of $16,017. No. 3 Will Not Run in 2016 VP Mechanical, Rob Baughman, indicated at the last board meeting, No. 3 will not run again this year. This is due to continuing mechanical issues. Most notably, removing the dry pipe and sealing a leak, then replacing it and getting the FRA inspection done. He did say that he s looking to run her on a more regular basis in Special Events Committee To Be Reestablished The board is looking for volunteers to form a Special Events Committee. This group will be responsible for planning and execution of our special event trains Easter Train, Robbery Trains, Santa Trains, New Year s Eve Train and any other special trains that may be added to the schedule. Interested members should contact the editor or any other board member. Please step forward and become more involved with our railway! 3 A Look Back......Throughout this, our 43rd year, we will take a look back in the history of the HVSR and/or Hocking Division of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. Anyone wishing to contribute photos and/or articles are most welcomed. The following are excerpts from the August 1929 issue of the Hocking Valley Employes Magazine. Courtesy of Mike McKitrick. The Hocking Valley Girls Recreational ball team plays the City Women s Recreational Ball League. Although the team was beaten in its initial game, it shows promise of being able to play with the best of them with a little more practice. This team plays every Tuesday evening at the Company s Recreation Field....Girls are also pitching horseshoes on Tuesday evenings at Mound Street. Helen Wilhelm is Chairman of this branch activity, and reports that a league will be formed in the near future. Seventy-nine students were graduated from Logan, O., High School in the class of Of this number, fourteen are sons and daughters of Hocking Valley employees. 4 Holiday Decorating Schedule Decorating of our depot and cars will take place on Saturday, November 12th. Please come out and lend a hand starting at 8:30 am. Kate Fickell on the step of No. 701 Kate Fickell, a 5 th year senior at O.U., visited the HVSR the afternoon of August 27 th to photograph the railway and surroundings for her graduation project. While riding the locomotive out to East Logan, and then going back into the coaches, she interviewed staff and customers, and took their photos. She said that she was then going to put together a newspaper like account of her experiences and turn it in for her grade. We really hope she enjoyed her visit to the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway and that she comes away with an A+ on her project! More of her photos follow below and right. E. Our busiest season is almost here so we need your help to work our upcoming Santa Trains and New Years Eve train. There are eighteen Santa Trains starting the weekend after Thanksgiving plus the New Year s Eve train on Saturday, Dec. 31st. All these trains are very busy and your help is appreciated! 4

5 Car Corner From time to time this column will list some of our rolling stock and locomotives with photos and historical info. If any member has such photos in their collection that they would like to share please send them to me. / Editor Shown above is our MOW caboose. It is mainly used on our work trains as a spot for crews to relax and maybe eat a little lunch. It was formerly a Seaboard Coast Line caboose. Name Street City State Zip Phone Please return to: HVSR c/o Bob Lennertz, 5565 Valencia Park Blvd., Hilliard, Ohio by December 31, 2016 NOMINATIONS NEEDED Anyone interested in serving as a trustee or officer of the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway should submit his or her name to a member of the nominating committee headed by chairman Bob Schmoll by December 10, To be eligible for consideration, a candidate must have been a member of the railway for at least one year, be eligible to vote and exhibit a regular and ongoing involvement in the operation, maintenance and/or administration of the railway. The nominating committee is responsible for selecting qualified candidates, reviewing any additional candidates nominated by mail, certifying eligibility and obtaining all candidates consent to stand for election. Three three-year terms and one one year term for trustee will be elected at the annual meeting on February 27, Officers who serve for one year include president, a secretary, a treasurer, and three vice-presidents who oversee operations, mechanical, and maintenance of way on the railway. Information on the candidates for all the contested positions will be printed in the January issue of The Valley Flyer. 6
