The weather was perfect, the variety of trucks was amazing, and the venue was superb, as always. I had a great time at the show, and everyone I spoke with also indicated that they really enjoyed it. This also includes the WAPA club who had their stationary engines on display. They love their current setup location. I need to thank all the volunteers that helped put on the show. Without them our show would not run off as smooth as it does. Every year the show seems to run a little smoother, thanks to the people behind the scenes, like Diane and Mark Christensen, Ken Lund, Larry Laughlin, and many others. Thanks to all of you for making it another eventful show. I would also like to thank Hal Hays and Terry Klenske for bringing to their magnificent fleet of restored trucks. They were amazing. Most of us to not realize how much work is involved getting these trucks prepped and the driven or hauled out to the show. It takes an amazing amount of time and effort to bring that many vehicles to a show. Thank you both again for bringing out your collection for us members and the public to admire. Thanks to Matt Tait for our mystery tour on Saturday. We toured an amazing collection of about 85 John Deere tractors, owned by Fred Williams, in Hemet. He has only been collecting for 8 years, and has collected a vast collection of two cylinder Johnny poppers (John Deere s.) Following this we went to an Antique trailer show, also in Hemet. We saw some beautifully restored vintage trailers. Afterward, we headed back to OERM for a delicious tri-tip dinner, cooked superbly by Larry Laughlin. It's now time to get ready for our trip to the national show in Salem, Oregon later this month. Last I heard there were around 900 trucks pre-registered. It looks like it going to be a huge show. Now if the weather will hold up. If anyone is interested in caravaning to Salem, please let Mark Christensen or myself know. Happy trucking, and hope to see you at our summer BBQ. 3 MESSAGE FROM CHAPTER EVENT COORDINATOR Ken Lund PAST EVENTS Saturday March 19 th Trophy Day Orange County Thanks to Richard Barrett and an efficient crew, we knocked out the trophies in record time about 2 hours!! Richard pre cut many bases, most of the parts already had studs welded, and we just painted, stained and cranked them out, with time to have lunch and talk trucks. Mark your calendar for March 18, 2017 to do it again next year. Sunday April 2, Wings and Fins Aircraft and Car Show, at Riverside Airport Inland Empire Car Club Council, of which ATHS-SCC is a member, held their 2 nd annual show as part of the Wings and Fins event at the Riverside Airport. It was a great air show, and the 200 cars helped make it even better. Even if you aren t an airplane enthusiast, it is well worth the price of admission. Lots of truck show flyers and registration forms were handed out. Saturday April 9 - Victoria Avenue Day - Riverside The city of Riverside celebrated Victoria Avenue (a scenic divided road with roses and other plants & trees in the center) with a cruise/parade the entire length from Riverside to La Sierra. It was held at Poly High School with various booths and displays. There weren t many vehicles, but this was the 1 st year. There were about 6 Model As, and 3 trucks (Rick Perez Ford, Dennis Martinez GMC, Ken s GMC.) Dennis won a Mission Inn gift certificate for best vehicle!! We provided a raffle gift (tee shirt & Wheels of Time & Showtime). Let s plan on doing this again next year. Saturday April 16 Motor Transport Museum Open House Campo About a dozen SCC members joined MTM for their open house. Lots of neat old rusty stuff, hay rides, and great food made a for a very pleasant day. We should plan on doing it again next year. May 1 - The 31st Annual Antique Truck Show Perris (Pre show set up, BBQ and Mystery Tour Sat April 30) Another successful truck show!! Set up started Friday, bringing the club trailer, marking off swap meet spaces, and Hal Hays bringing most of his trucks. Saturday more Hays and Dalton trucks, and the Mystery Tour of about 15 trucks visiting a collection of nearly 100 restored John Deere tractors. In the evening our chapter hosted a pot luck BBQ with our traditional tri-tip and hand cranked ice cream. Sunday was show day!! We had nearly 150 trucks of all years, makes, and body styles imaginable. Big rigs were well represented this years. Tee shirt sale went very well, and the swap meet spaces were all full. The Western Antique Power Group had quite a display of their hit & miss engines and other equipment. No complaints from OREM, and only a few glitches for us to fix for next year. Mark Sunday May 7 for our 2017 show. FUTURE EVENTS June 4 - Steve Mc Queen Car Show Boys Republic - Chino Hills We have been invited to attend the Friends of Steve McQueen Car & Motorcycle Show at the Boys Republic campus. Steve McQueen was a 'troubled youth' and was a long time sponsor of this organization. The show features vehicles of all sorts, and is not necessarily limited to 'old' classics. Last year we had a small showing of trucks, and would like to have more. Each year is a theme of a Steve McQueen movie. This year is "The Getaway". There will be a trophy for the best unrestored truck. August 20 - Annual Picnic/BBQ Possibly Aug 20 at Bogart Park, Banning. Same location as last year, unless any other ideas? To be finalized by next newsletter. October 2 Irwindale - Truckin for Kids Annual Show. We have been invited to bring our trucks on the Sunday of the event. We usually have 12 entry passes and space to have a chapter booth and t-shirt sales. More details to follow in July/August newsletter.

In past years we took the old iron out on road trips, including a Ridge Route Run, Lake Mathews to Temecula, tour of Dalton Trucking, etc. The route should be friendly to older or slower vehicles. Maybe finish at a unique or special restaurant instead of BBQ? SoCal is a big place and there must be somewhere we can go within a reasonable distance from a central location. Call Ken or one of he board members with your ideas of something new or maybe a suggestion of a repeat of an old favorite.

National dues of $45 ($55 family) are payable directly to ATHS National headquarters ( in Kansas City, Missouri on your anniversary date of joining ATHS. You are billed by them and will receive a subscription to Wheels of Time magazine. Southern California Chapter dues are $20 per calendar year and are due prior to March 1 of each year and includes bi-monthly issues of the Old Iron Express Newsletter.
