1 Volume 43 Issue 6 June 2017 May was a nice month. Great weather has arrived and we are taking advantage of it. We started with a trip to Aqua Dulcy and a visit to the Sweetwater Café. I don t always eat breakfast, but when on vacation I crave this early morning meal. Well our trips out for a meal always seem to hit the spot. We had a bunch of cars in our trek into the back roads of this county. A simple day with grand results. Makes you want to go again. The Ron Mosher (aka Doctor A) seminars concerning how to build a Model A is scheduled again for the end of June (24 th to be exact). Even if you do not own a Model A, you really need to attend. See the article written by Keith Smith on page 9. You need to attend. As you may or may not know, the Santa Paula Airport opens their doors to the public one day each month. The next time is on June 4 th and we have scheduled a tour and visit to this great little airport. They have many vintage aircraft and just a lot of interesting items and information regarding flight. Oh yes their restaurant has recently been refurbished and we will partake of a lunch. It is a club rule that trips and food go together!!! If you missed the Friendly Valley Memorial Day Parade you missed a lot. Many of our members mentioned that many of the public viewing this parade wore World War II Veterans hats. The vet s from WWII are in their 90 s and it is a very proud generation. Well, we saw a lot of people who just like a parade and particularly one with old cars. Great day for us and we ended (of course) with a good lunch.. They produce some of their vintage aircraft and it is an interesting and educational tour of the airport. Come and join your friends and of course we will have lunch at Santa Paula airport. See page 6 - for further details. June 24 (Saturday) Ron Mosher Model A Seminar #3 (or how does a rear-end work) Seminar #3 on how does a Model A Ford work is coming. Even if you do not want to rebuild your Model A these seminars are excellent in understand how Model A s (or any old automobile) works. An great presentation by our own local expert. Starts at 10 am and you need to bring a chair. Food is provided and a donation will help. See page 9 article. Wednesday Burger Night. New Location (June 7, 14, 21 and 28 th ) JACK IN THE BOX We have a new location at Jack in the Box restaurant located next to the Home Depot at Rye Cyn (Copper Hill) and Newhall Ranch Road. Enjoy a really and full menu from burgers to salads to ice cream in a peaceful and quiet evening Starting time is 6 pm. 2

3 The midmid-week Breakfast run to Aqua Dulcy and the Sweetwater Cafe. Once again on a Tuesday morning, we gathered and took a nice country trip to Aqua Dulcy. We dined at the Sweetwater Café that served an excellent breakfast. There were 10 automobiles and 13 members attending. The weather was great as it was a calm and cool day for this fine trip.. A great little café! Back country roads gave us smooth driving. Ten automobiles made the trip! Breakfast was good may be excellent!! 3

4 May 29 th (Monday) Memorial Day Parade in Friendly Valley Our annual parade in the friendliest place called Friendly Valley. A short but fun parade with lots of love. The majority of the viewers were probably veterans and/or strong supports of our armed forces. It is always to our enjoyment to participate in this Memorial Day Parade. We had 10 cars in the lineup and we even allowed a Chevrolet!!! After our parade endeavors, we went directly to the Route 66 Café for a great lunch. ` What else is there? A beautiful and warm day, a great little parade (where we looked good), many compliments, surrounded by friends and a fine and full lunch. 4

6 Up coming tours/activities: June 4th (Sunday) Tour to Santa Paula Airport Santa Paula Airport will open their doors to all visitors. The have some excellent examples of vintage aircraft. It is an interesting and educational opportunity to tour the airport. We meet in the parking area behind Walgreens (Bridgeport off Newhall Ranch Road) on Sunday, June 4th at 9 am as we will depart at 9;30 am for the airport. Come and join your friends and of course we will have lunch at Santa Paula airport. 7 Old Town Newhall Revved up Car Show Old Town Newhall hosts a car shows on the Second Thursday of each months as follows: June 8 th Classic VW s July 13 th Hot Rods and Customs August 10 th European Cars and bikes September 14 th American Classic (emphasis on stock vehicles) October 12 th Mustang Route 66 Classic Car Shows Route 66 Classic Car Show The cars shows at Route 66 are back for All shows are held on the second Saturday monthly from May through October. Our club likes to made a club visit to one show annually and that will be on September 9 th. More information to follow. Informal Car Meet On every Saturday morning from 6:30 am to 8:30 am, there is an open house car meeting held adjacent the K-Mart (Valencia Blvd at Bouquet Cyn). It just a place to meet and to view others automobiles. Just meet and discuss the love of all cars. It s called Coffee N Cars and it is located in front of the Wester Bagel Shop. No trophies and no entrée fee. 7

8 Model A Club of San Fernando Valley August 20th A swap meet that applies to all makes of automobiles. This one day event is close and a easy drive. Lots of vendors and a jolly good time. They even have food. Rancho San Antonio Boys Home 2100 Plummer Street (at DeSoto) Chatsworth $5 a car load up with friends. Arrive early, e.g. 6 am as it will close at noon Four sell l 4 sail for sale: Our Jack Jung was approached by an individual who wants to sell a Ford Model T. Jack saw the automobile and it is describe to be in good shape. Here is the information gathered: seller is: Jim Brantley Vasquez Rock Ct The vehicle is an 1915 Ford Model T, 3 door touring sedan It has a new carburetor and the asking price is $12,000 8

10 Club members mix with real flappers flappers. by Tom Edgington th On Saturday On Saturday, May 20, two of our members took their collector cars to a 1930 s birthday bash for Pablo Carrillo s wife here in the Santa Clarita Valley. The theme of the party was Flappers and Gangsters Both Jhoe Abejon and Tom Edgington took their respective cars, a 1930 Ford Roadster and a 1931 Ford Town Sedan, and set them up as a static display for all the party goers to enjoy. The cars made a great hit, as the men and women dressed to the 9 s in beautiful flapper costumes, and the men in pin-striped suits stood in front of or sat in the cars to have period photographs taken. To top it off, Tom took his 1921 studio Thompson submachine gun as a prop. It too made a big bang, no pun intended ha ha! Fun was had by all. Pablo works in the Transportation Department for the City of Santa Clarita. 10

11 1927 Ford Model T Runabout The Ford Model T revolutionized the United States and the world. At the turn of the 20 th Century, the average American had not traveled mlore than 20 miles from their place of birth. The Model T (introduced in 1909) made the automobile affordable and available to the everyday person. Ford produced millions of his cars, wherein half of the cars in the world were Ford Model T s. Ford was the number one selling car from 1909 to However, the sales of Chevrolets were gaining significantly. Ford need to upgrade his Model T. In 1926 the major changes included: lengthening the car body and hood; larger tires for a softer ride; a new factory produced pickup truck and introduction of a single one-piece windshield. Many people remember Henry Ford s quote: I ll paint the car any color you want, as long as it is black! The 1926 Ford began offering cars painted blue, gray and brown. Also other options offered included wire wheels over wooden spoke wheels. The Model T is unique to drive and a bit awkward. There are three-foot pedals on the floorboard. There is no clutch needed for shifting. To accelerate and apply the gasoline, ou use a hand lever on the steering column. The left pedal activates the 1 st gear, neutral gear and 2 nd gear. The center pedal is for reverse driving, and the third pedal is the brake. In May 1927, the 15,000,000 Model T came off the assembly line. However, it was the last year for the Model T.
