1 Volume 43 Issue 3 MARCH 2017 It never rains in Southern California but it pours. The lyrics for great song, but it was true. Usually if the rains last for two days, the outcry is will it ever end? But, it has rained forever and it should end someday?? Well I m optimistic that the rain is going away as we have two trips planned for March. So check out your car! Does it start, have sufficient gasoline, tires inflated, water in the radiator, etc. The Santa Paula Airport opens its doors to the public one day each month. The hangers are open and they have a vast array of vintage aircraft that is truly a pleasure to visit. It is a nice visit with an easy ride out and we will of course have a nice lunch. We run out on the 126 highway and with a group we can cruise easily into Ventura County. In keeping with good weather, we will also have a nice county road trip to Action and attend a brunch meal at Crazy Otto s. See the details on page 6. It is always a pleasant back road country trip and it will let you exercise your car for only about 30 miles. The club roster for 2017 was to all with addresses. If you did not receive it or need a paper copy, come to the March General Meeting for a copy. Also, at our last meeting there was some club paraphernalia including badges, car signs, key chain and others. Should you be interested we will develop a purchase list. I want to congratulate Glenna Beaver for winning the Membership Drawing at our February meeting. The amount was very high excessive and since Glenna was not present the prize will increase for Mach. CLUB Activities and Tours March 2 nd (Thursday) General Meeting at 7:30 pm We can discuss last year and plan for the new year. We are always open to new ideas be ready to express yourself. March 5 th (Sunday) Tour/Trip to Santa Paula Airport Meet in the parking area behind Walgreen s at Bridgeport off Newhall Ranch Road. Meet at 9:30 am and we will depart at 10 am. Lunch is also planned. March 14 th (Tuesday) Road Tour/Trip to Crazy Otto s in Acton. It is time for everyone to get their collectible car up and running. We want to take a road trip and we need food. So we will meet at Placerita Cyn just off the Hwy 14 freeway at 9:00 am and take a country road trip to Acton and some brunch. March 20 th (Monday) Board Meeting 7:30 pm at President Bob s residence. Wednesday Burger Night. (March 1, 8, 15 and 22nd) we are at Wendy s Burger. Enjoy a full menu from burger to salad to ice cream in a peaceful and quiet evening at on Bouquet Cyn Road at Wendy s. Bring your collectible car. We are well represented come enjoy the food. Hours are 6pm to 8pm. 2

3 Willy Wonka stage production at the Newhall Canyon Theater. Here are some of the attendees who made it for a fine meal at the El Trocadero restaurant on February 18 th. Some even acquired a Willy Wonka Candy Bar!! The Ron Mosher (aka Doctor A) Model A seminar. It started with a car frame and as explained it will become a complete Model A automobile fully assembled. There will be several seminars each that will entailing the assembly of one complete automobile. The body will be a two door sedan. Each session is held approximately monthly and you will be advised of the schedule. It is an excellent opportunity especially if you own a Model A but also it is excellent for just expanding your automotive knowledge. 3

A NEW AND INFORMAL CAR MEETING SPOT On every Saturday morning from 6:30 am to 8:30 am there is now a open house meeting area in our valley. Come to the parking lot adjacent to K-Mart (Valencia Bl at Bouquet Cyn) and meet with other automobile enthusiasts. Just meet to discuss and love all cars. It is called Coffee N Cars at it is in front of the Western Bagel Shop. No trophies and no entry fees. 4

5 The 1948 Tucker Preston Tucker started an automobile company that was revolutionary in automotive history. All Tuckers were built in 1948 and only 51 cars were made and today there are only 47 remaining in the world. It was hailed as the car of the future First Completely New Car in a half century. It had features that would not be found for another 40 years. It was designed for safety with over 67 safety features engineered into this car. The doors were cut into the roof for safety and for the ease of getting in and out of the car. It had a slender profiling which today means an aerodynamic design to reduce wind resistance. The most noticeable feature was the third headlight, a moving Cyclops-eye that turns automatically rotating with the turning of the car. Additionally, advanced features included pop-out windshield, padded dashboard, controls clustered around the steering wheel, a fully independent suspension and dish brakes. Tucker had problems obtaining a proper engine. He adopted a Franklin Helicopter engine to his new car. It was mounted in the rear of the car, and it was converted from air cooled to a water cooled engine. The engine was a flathead 6 cylinder, 335 cubic inch that delivered 166 horsepower. All Tucker cars were four-door fastback models. The first Tucker built was nicknamed the Tin Goose. With the exception of the Tin Goose, all Tuckers were built with rear doors that opened backwards or suicide doors. The cars were built on a 128 inch wheelbase and stood only 60 inches tall. To show endurance, Preston Tucker took his cars to the Indianapolis Raceway track for 5 continuous days driving at 90 mph without any mechanical problems. Top speed was reported at 120 mph. The Tucker Automobile Company had financial problems from the beginning. The Federal Securities and Exchange Commission sued Preston Tucker for fraud. Tucker won the legal battle but the financial ills resulted in the collapse of the car company. Preston Tucker said of his car, My Car Was Too Good. The 1948 Tucker Torpedo 5

The first Sunday is March 5 th and we plan or trekking out for a visit. ALSO, the restaurant has been refurbished and we will take our hungry selves there!!! We will meet in the parking area behind Walgreen s on Bridgeport off Newhall Ranch Road. Meet there at 9:30 AM and we will depart at 10 AM. Of course, a lunch is involved at or near the Santa Paula Airport. Road trip to acton and crazy otto s cafe March 14 th Road Tour/Trip to Crazy Otto s in Acton. It is time for everyone to get their collectible car up and running. We want to take a road trip and we need food. Coming in the near future: Fox airfield and maybe a poppy? April we will take an automobile tour to the north Los Angeles County. We will lunch at Fox Air Field for lunch. Now, we think there may be some poppies enroute?? The last few years the poppies decided they didn t like us and they hide! So this year we will drive through the area and should there be poppies, we will participate. But if all fails, we will have a nice drive and a good lunch. Don t talk too loudly as it may scare them into hiding. There is no date set as we have volunteers going to the Lancaster valley and spying and looking for the missing poppies. So stay ready and the notice maybe short!!! Murphy auto museum in Oxnard It has been quite some time since we visited the Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard. This is an excellent automotive museum and there is a nominal entrance fee. Currently they are featuring Studebakers and Packard s. And do not fear for we have identified excellent sources for lunch. It will be a nice drive and a nice tour with food. And this grouping of TRAFFIC REGULATION SIGNS means what. 6
