Leroy & Harvey can t partake President s Message Up until last Saturday, e day of Chrome Nickle and Brass e weaer was fantastic; but, as fate would have it ere was a very good chance e weaerman would be right and it would rain. Sherry and I arrived at e check in Rio Linda at 9:00 am soon followed by Jerry Compton and a few minutes later by Allen Koch in his beautiful Bugatti, en Bud and Jean arrived in eir stunning Model A. Pretty soon more old cars started showing up en a 1910 Buick showed up which I first ought was Leroy and Pats 1914 and turned out to be a two cylinder gorgeous automobile. Jerry's stepson arrived in a speedster. There was a 1941 Packard, a 1914 model T at had been in e family for over 60 years. In total ere were 15 vehicles. Feeling hungry we decided to go to our new favorite place The Club and purchased lunch. Returning to our cars we dined. About is time Milt arrived in his Model T... and en it happened! An ominous sign of e Greek God Zeus, followed by one drop en anoer and anoer. Plaques were hastily awarded to participants and off we went in concert in e midst of a rain deluge. On e way home our right brake locked up and wi a couple of turns of a bolt we were off again...and soaking wet. It was a marvelous adventure and will be cherished forever. Looking forward to e next tour. Rich Silva The V/P s Podium Friday, September 20 Lincoln Meadows Care Center Car Show. If you are interested, call Lisa Hettema for details. 6 POST-EPILOGUE Regrettably, I did not get e last five days of my trip in. It went from August 26 to e real end...my mistake. People will find it quite enjoyable as I encounter a disabled 1927 Franklin. Attached are e final five days of e trip...very dramatic and colorful. ALL THE SMILES I VE SEEN The story of my epic journey in Beatrice e Model T Wednesday August 27, Out of Minden, we took Hwy 88 to Woodfords, a scenic route at Steve chose for us. At some point we drove into e middle of nowhere and took a big hike. When we got on e road, we saw e hugest boat some kind of yacht, on a giant semi wi several CHPs parked around it en, when we stopped at Hope Valley Resort for a nice sandwich, we saw e truck creeping terribly slowly by and came to a stop right in front of where we were Steve went and talked to e truck driver and found out at because of e size of e craft, which was nearly e entire wid of e highway, ey would only let him travel at 5 mph, and his truck was overheating. It was a big boat. Steve took us a nice little hike to a creek he knew of to eat our lunch. Then we got back on 88 we were driving along and saw someing odd on e side of e road ahead an antique car of some kind, we were amazed to find ourselves come upon a 1931 Franklin 4dr Sedan stranded due to vapor lock! They were just driving from Carson City to Sou Lake Tahoe ey couldn t believe we had gone so far. Their problem occurred even ough ey have a vacuum tank AND an electric pump. Steve came to e rescue showing em e water trick and gave em several bottles of water to help em rough to Hwy 89 to go toward Sou Shore, we went to e market ere to buy groceries and, again when we were on 50, we saw e Franklin on e side of e road. Then came e final 6

7 big grade of our trip: e Echo Summit grade on e west side of Lake Tahoe, and I took e Old Meyers grade road several hairpin turns and grades at had us in low Ruckstell, low band creeping up at 10 mph! But, what a view on at narrow old road! Then it was a gentle descent about 15 miles to e Babaycos Sierra Pines cabin I had stayed almost two mons ago. A decent night s sleep in a familiar bed! Carl Lasagna Annual SVMTC auction is in November... Start preparing now! Gaer and set aside e most important ings in your life... Then bring everying else to e auction in November. This is suppose to be a fun event. So bring your wallet, your piggy bank, your check book and your pink slip. (no... not an under garment) This is e clubs only fund raiser and you can help make it just at!!! If you like to laugh, make up stories and pig out on gourmet breakfast cuisine, en is is for you. This will be e first post-touring season Model T clinic. The subject... The Ruckstell Axle. Do you have a Ruckstell? If e answer is yes... Then is clinic is for you! Considering converting to a Ruckstell Axle? If e answer is yes... Then is clinic is for you! MARK YOUR CALENDAR Hal s Auto Care Saturday Nov 16 9:00am Seen e ALLEN KOCH CAR? 8 Guidelines For Planning A Tour 1. Pick a mon at you want for your tour and coordinate it wi e club Events chair person (usually e Vice President). This keeps conflicting dates to a minimum. Also check calendars for holidays and oer area car club activities to avoid. Get your date on e club event calendar so members can 'save e date'. If is is your first time planning, do not be afraid to ask a seasoned member for advice and help. 2. Pick your destination. This can be point of interest, festival, museum or just a beautiful drive. 3. Plan e route. Look at maps, use online mapping programs and what you might know about e area where you are going. Avoid busy highways as much as possible. Write a turn by turn set of directions. Include e address of e destination and your cell number in case someone gets lost or has car trouble. 4. Drive your route. Even ough you know e route, follow your instructions to make sure ey are correct. Make any changes as needed. Make notes of any road construction, detours and any public events near where you are going. Determine e timing between stops remembering Model T's drive much slower an modern vehicles. If ere are steep hills, factor is in. payment meod. 7. Publicize - Now at you have e plan, give tour details (What, When, Where, What time, etc.) to e newsletter editor, webmaster and announce at e membership meeting. It is also handy to pass around a signup sheet to get an idea of how many cars and people will be attending. 8. Tour Day - Tour leader should be one of e first to arrive at e starting point. Check off members from your signup sheet as ey arrive. Pass out e tour directions and have a drivers meeting to explain any details about e tour or last minute changes. As you leave remember to use e safe touring practices. Be mindful of regular traffic, pull over if ey begin to back up behind you. After a few turns, pull over at a safe spot to allow everyone to catch up and regroup. 9. Going Home - Make sure everyone knows what time to regroup for e return trip home. You should also provide directions. Find out if anyone is taking a different route home. Anoer option for e return trip - Plan a rest stop or ice cream break. It's always nice to stop for some refreshments on e way home on a warm summer day. 5. Rest Stop - Plan to have at least one rest stop wi restroom facilities especially on longer tours. This can be a point of interest, a park or just a place to stretch your legs. 6. Lunch Stop - If you are having a lunch stop on e tour, be sure to check wi e eatery. Let em know how many people to expect. Check to see if you can reserve a dedicated room for e group. Decide if attendees are to pay individually or if club funds are to be used for some or all and clear wi e club for auorization and also e treasurer for 10. These guidelines were written wi e intention of easing e pain and frustration at goes along wi planning an event. The tour should be just as enjoyable to e leaders as e participants. Hopefully more members will try eir hand in planning a tour for a day of fun driving eir old car. It's a great feeling to know e pleasure of knowing "I did it!" John Saylor 8

9 How I met my Model T Ford My fascination wi e T began in Port Chester, New York, where I grew up. The faer of an elementary school friend had a T at he would drive in school parades around e parking lot. How I loved e sound of at ooga-ooga horn! I always wanted a ride. I never got one. Forty-five-odd years later, is beauty from Kingman, Arizona, became ours. No seats, no top, radiator shot, bullet holes in e back... well, a few oer problems but I got my T! After mucho hours of Wendel Work, she s again frolicking down e road. Isn t she pretty gorgeous... The T looks good too! Wendel Waltz Chrome Nickel & Brass It was a success... It Rained! If you were tired of e valley heat. If you were tired of endless blue sky. If you were tired of dusty roads. If you were tired of crowded tours. Then is would be e Tour for you! Got an article? Submit to e editor and you ll get many anks Got a picture? Submit to e editor and you ll get many anks Got extra money? Submit to e editor and you ll get helically wound around an inclined plane. 9
