1 10503 Oak Valley Trail, Austin, Texas BOW TIMES Volume 38 Number 1 January 2016 Established in 1979 to encourage the restoration and preservation of all series and models of 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets, including Corvettes and Trucks. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT MEETING Thursday January 21 at El Gallo on South Congress Social hour 6 PM meeting 7PM. Fellow club members! President s Message We ended 2015 with our annual Chevy Club Holiday party! Many thanks to Gladys, Janie, Kay, Linda and others for all the work they did to have the party be great! It was a fun time for everyone. The evening started with a social hour a chance for everyone to chat and mingle before dinner. Dinner was delicious I had the salmon and vegetables and of course dessert. After eating, Dan took out a little time to do some official club business, including handing out awards, and announcing the Club Officers for We finished the evening with the annual White Elephant gift exchange there were several gifts that kept getting stolen and actually made it to the third owner, deeming it safe from anyone else. Wayne s granddaughter was a treat as she kept opening gifts and finding a car-related sign and looking a little disappointed. Luckily there were many car-loving people in the room that would take the sign from her and allow her to try again. It s always a fun game and made more fun by the competition and desire to take those special gifts from our friends! If you were unable to attend the party, I wanted to be sure you were informed of our award winners and officers: CTCCC Officers for 2016 we are all excited and honored to serve the club over the coming year. The officers and their addresses as well as the sign up for monthly activities owners are posted on our website. President- Ronnie Raben 1

2 Vice President - Dan Bowen treasurer - Kay Bowen Secretary - Marilyn Peterson Activities Director - we will continue to have club members "own" one month of the year in a rotation, and Corky Lien Newsletter - Pat Corbell Website/Directory Updates- Robin Raben Congratulations to our 2015 Award Winners - also posted on the home page of our Website. Pat Corbell received a trophy and recognition for consistently providing an outstanding newsletter for the club. Robin Raben our WEB ANGEL received a trophy and recognition for Website and Directory. Acknowledgment Book Project As I mentioned at the end of the Christmas Party, I d like to get together a small project to appropriately acknowledge Dan Bowen for his many years of service as President of our Club 14 years so far! I m asking you to please me, mail me or give me an acknowledgement of a special memory about Dan as the CTCCC President. Maybe something you learned from him, something you d like to thank him for, a photo or funny story, what you appreciate about him as President, etc. These will go in the book. I d like to have it together by the February meeting, so please get something to me in January (bringing it to the January meeting at El Gallo would be great). Member Survey The last thing I d like to ask you is for your input on your experience of the club. You, know-- what you like, what you d like to change, and what you d like to add to the meetings and activities of the club in Please , mail or give that to me in January. Get Your Car Going This is a great time of year to work on your car to get it ready for Change the oil and oil filter or just check to make sure it is full, fill up the radiator, check the tire pressure, put oil in the generator and distributor if you have original parts, check your brakes, check all of your lights 2

3 including turn signals, etc. You know what to do. And, like your spouse, take it out, give it something fun to do and have a good time!!! In closing, I d like to thank everyone for their participation in the club meetings and activities, including Robin for helping to put this letter together (can you tell? how?) it is the members that make this a GREAT CLUB! I look forward to a healthy, prosperous and fun 2016 with all of you. See you on Thursday, January 21, at El Gallo. Come early to socialize and have dinner. The meeting starts at 7. Ronnie No minutes were taken. CTCCC MEETING MINUTES December 6, 2015 New/Returning Members Mark and Ann Soule msoule@austin.rr.com Member's Car Story HISTORY OF OUR 1968 SS/RS CAMARO CONVERTIBLE ORIGINAL OWNER LINDA (EDWARDS) VOLEK AND EDWARD VOLEK Linda and Rodney Edwards were married in June 1967 and later that summer custom ordered their 1968 Camaro Convertible through Henna Chevrolet, Austin, Texas. The car arrived in December and we took ownership on December 5, Total purchase price of the car was $4, Before we drove off in our car our salesman, Hoyt Crimm, gave us a little lecture on driving safely in such a powerful car. After all Linda was only 19 years old and Rodney was 21 years old. 3

4 Linda and Rodney both loved this car and thoroughly enjoyed driving it every day. In 1969 Rodney became ill and died in Linda decided she was never going to part with this car. In 1969 Edward and Greg Volek had lost their wife/mother in a tragic car accident. We were all from the same small town, Pflugerville, and all still lived there and attended the same church. Because Ed and Linda had both suffered heart breaking losses, our well-meaning friends decided they needed to do some match making and arranged a night out dancing. Well, the only two people that showed up were Ed and Linda and we had a wonderful night dancing to Big Band music at the old Dessau night club..and the next is history! In 1971 Linda and Edward Volek were married. After 45 years of marriage (January 2016), we both are still loving and enjoying this car. One day this car will pass on to our son Greg and grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner, in hopes that it will remain in the family and continue to be enjoyed by future generations. Linda drove the car to work every day for many years until around the late 1970s. The car was then kept in the garage until In 1988 (for Linda s 40 th Birthday), we decided it was time to bring the Camaro back to life and a total restoration was begun by Jerry s Dixon s Classic. The restoration was completed in October 1990 after a cost of about $25,000. In January 1991 the car was entered in its first car show Austin Custom & Hot Rod Car Show. The car won: 1st Place in its Class (Restored Convertible) Outstanding Antique or Restored Car of the Show Outstanding Detail Outstanding Color Design In June 1994 the Camaro was used in the movie Texas Justice starring Heather Locklear. In 1998 we lost our home in a flood on the Guadalupe River and most of our Camaro pictures and memorabilia were destroyed. However, we were able to salvage most of the original documents (even though they are flood damaged) and we have the original purchase invoice, paperwork, owner's manual and maintenance book. Our wonderful friends, Janie and Corky Lien, were members of CTCCC and were always talking about the many fun events, activities and all the wonderful people they had met through the club. We asked if we could join the club and we attended our first meeting at the Lien s house! It s been so much fun ever since. We have met and become friends with the most amazing people and have enjoyed our car even more because of CTCCC. We have experienced so many wonderful activities through the club. Every year since Corky started Corky s Cruise we have traveled hundreds of miles in our Camaro. We are positive that many more great car adventures lie ahead for us. 4
