June 2016 Happy 40th Birthday, Memphis Classic Chevy Club!!! Can you believe it??? Memphis Classic Chevy Club is 40 years old this year! In November, 1976, the initial meeting to form a club was held. It s primary focus was on 1955, 1956, and 1957 Chevys. And the rest is history Which we are about to share with you! When the initial founders of the club first got the ball rolling, did they realize it would still be going forty years later? In this and the upcoming issues we will cover the history of the club. Stay tuned!!! 6/12/2016 2
June 2016 Classic Chevy Club out of Orlando, Florida published a monthly magazine. This article was in the July 1978 issue and features MCCC in several articles. Here s one: Memphis Classic Chevy Club began in November, 1976 by several guys whose love for Tri-Fives brought them together. MCCC Officers 1977 President Gene Bradberry Vice President Larry Chambers Secretary Joe Sharp Treasurer B.J. Wilkinson Yearly Dues Were $12! 6/12/2016 3
June 2016 Moscow Car Show On May 7, 2016, Memphis Classic Chevy Club had the opportunity to be involved with the First Annual Moscow Car Show! Sponsored by the Bank of Fayette County, Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, along with several other sponsors, the proceeds benefited the Fayette County 4-H Club. There were over 70 cars registered! 6/12/2016 4
June 2016 As each participant arrived, their photo was taken. The photo was later placed on a plaque and given out at the awards ceremony. MCCC s own David Fulcher got the Mayor s Choice Award. MCCC member Danny Hart received the Sponsor s Choice Award. 6/12/2016 5
Points to Ponder For 10 years Memphis Classic Chevy Club met every Thursday night, weather permitting, of course, at Stage Center Parking lot at Stage and Kirby Whitten. It was the ideal location. Great traffic, lots of choices for eating, and such. People would happen by and would have to stop to see all the cool classic cars. With several of the store fronts empty, we had more than ample room to spread out. As the retail spaces became occupied, we began to have less and less room. Then the drugstore was built on the corner, and that really took from our available parking areas. And the riff raff started coming. They brought their jitneys and their poor social behaviors. We started seeing them speed through the pedestrian filled lot. We saw them do their smokie burnouts in the midst of other vehicles. We saw them ride on the outside of their cars, or on the bumpers, or hanging on to the side. We saw them put in the back of their trucks and ride through the lot. We heard their obnoxious obscenities regardless of who might have been around, including our children. We heard about the trash that was left on the lot long after we had gone home. Everything had changed. No more did we have a safe, clean, family friendly atmosphere. We knew it was a matter of time before we would likely be invited to leave. Instead, we chose to leave on our own terms and set up at another location at Joe s Crab Shack. It was nearly ideal. We were given a large area of the parking lot to be used exclusively by us. We were provided a security guard to keep the riff raff from invading again. Once again it was like is should have been: safe and family friendly. But people complained. It s too small. You have to deal with Germantown Road traffic. There s only one place to eat and it s expensive. There s not enough shade. How can you call it the Bartlett Cruise In if it isn t in Bartlett? And so on, and so on. Another opportunity came about: to have an entire lot to ourselves, have meals designed and cooked for us at very reasonable prices, security provided, no crazy 5 o clock traffic to deal with, and shade trees galore. Most of the businesses close at 5pm, except for the antique store, which would give us abundant parking and room to grow. Nearly everything that had been complained about was about to be resolved! Café 4210 s owner, Barry Holbrook, welcomed us with open arms. The new location is a mere 5-7 minutes north of Stage and Kirby Whitten. If you haven t checked it out yet, what are ya waiting for??? You ll see why we re so happy to be here! Every Thursday, weather permitting, from 5pm until 9pm. Hope to see you soon!!! 6/12/2016 6
