10503 Oak Valley Trail, Austin, Texas BOW TIMES Volume 38 Number 3 March 2016 Established in 1979 to encourage the restoration and preservation of all series and models of 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets, including Corvettes and Trucks. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT MEETING Thursday March 17 at El Gallo on South Congress Social hour 6 PM meeting 7PM. President s Message We had great participation from the club at the February meeting at Mimi s. It is always a pleasure to have new members. We enjoyed meeting Bill Talley s grandson, Ryan, who is a Chevy fan. The time of the various activities during our meetings has been brought up. Let s get there between 5:30 and 6:00 for the social/dinner part of the evening. I have been starting the meetings at 7:00, but I understand that the membership has discussed this in the past and desire for them to begin at 7:30 to allow everyone time to get there and settled for the meeting. So I will be sure to start at 7:30 going forward. A couple of us brought magazines to the meeting to swap. Let s try this a few more times to see if there is enough interest to continue it. Thanks to those of you that have sent in pictures from our activities. Check them out on our website! Jim is really doing a great job organizing Lone Star for 2017 in Austin. It involves a lot of club participation and everyone is jumping in to make this another successful event. We are looking forward to seeing the design that Dan has for the T-shirts! Please register for the Lone Star in Waco on June 3-4, It is always a good time. As we do every year, we made a donation of $200 to support the hosting club in Waco. 1
We have been very lucky with great weather this winter, which means it s a great year to participate in all the early spring car shows. Dan has graciously offered to assist with organizing the activities for the club. We have been invited again to participate in the Seventh Annual Car Show at Westwood Country Club on Saturday, April 2, from 9:30 until 2:30. Free booze and food. A great day. More on this later.. Remember the April meeting will be on Sunday, April 17, at Corky and Janie s house at 1. I hope the great weather continues so that we can bring our cars! Our next meeting is at El Gallo on Thursday, March 17, St. Patrick s day. Please join us! Ronnie Raben Minutes for CTCCC Meeting, 2/18/2016 CTCCC MEETING MINUTES Ronnie Raben called the meeting to order with a welcome to all and presented the purpose of our club. He then gave a special recognition to all our club veterans, accompanied by a robust round of applause from all members present. Minutes from the January 21, 2016, meeting were approved as reported in the February 2016 newsletter. It was reported that member Susie McShane is now in rehabilitation. Members present signed wishes for a full and speedy recovery on a card to be sent to her. Robin Raben announced birthdays and anniversaries with best wishes to all. Congratulations went out to Al & Gwen Burgess for their 2nd Place Award at the Lockhart Car Show. There were 804 entries! Appreciation was expressed for Mary Haile for the Valentine's Day Luncheon and a special thank you for Arlen Ramsey for giving a long stem red rose to each lady present. The guys brought car magazines to share. Gene Grotke suggested taking cars & magazines to military hospitalized in San Antonio. Gene has more information for those interested. Don Peterson gave information on tri-five cooling fans and shrouds. Connie Hoelscher reminded all of the car cruise & lunch to Columbus on March 21, She asked for RSVP by March llth for the restaurant. Jim Rankin gave an update on Lone Star XXXV to be held at Embassy Suites in San Marcos, May 19 thru May 21, He is in need of more volunteers so please contact him if you can help. Dan Bowen is getting shirts, dash plaques, and awards. He is hoping to present preliminary art work at the March meeting. 2
Corky Lien requested hotel reservations for his April Cruise be made by March 13, Contact him or Janie for more information. After the meeting, Gary Seghi joined our club, making our current membership 129. Welcome Gary! So, in the 6th grade, I found the girl and a couple years later I got my first car (before I got my driver's license). We both spent a lot of time working on this car. We even gave it a fresh coat of paint using a paint brush. This car was replaced by a pink 1956 Ford as a gift from a family member. Nice car until the hood blew off and messed up the car. After the Ford, in high school, we had our first tri-5, a 56 two door post. We then married and bought a Volkswagen. Decent car except we had to push-start it every time it looked like rain. Decades went by before we got into the car hobby. Once again, it started with a 1956 Chevy 4- door. Then we got into street rodding with a 1941 Chevy. Then it was a 1963 Plymouth Valiant convertible. In parallel with these cars was an on-going 19-year restoration of a 1955 Chevy. Eventually, all these cars were sold. Then came our most ambitious project. A neighbor was restoring a 1956 Chevy truck. After several years, he abandoned the project and put the truck up for sale. I ended up owning the truck. The plan was to get the truck running and sell it for a quick profit. I didn't sell it quick enough. While I was working on the truck, my wife informed me she had been given an old camper and she decided we needed the camper to match the truck. So, instead of selling the truck, we now had a truck and a camper to restore. After much work, the truck and camper were finished and turned out to be the source of a lot of enjoyment. We've taken them camping, tailgating to A&M football games, car shows and recently to Cruisin the Coast in Biloxi where a photo of the truck along with Mike Love, original founder of the Beach Boys, was featured on the front page of the local newspaper. 3
When the truck and camper were finished, I said there would be no more projects. That lasted about a year. We recently purchased a 1956 Chevy 2-door hardtop as our final restoration. The 1956 Chevy we had in high school took us on many dates as well as our honeymoon. This 1956 restoration will serve as a reminder of the nearly 56 years we have been together - completing the circle. Dennis and Wanda Zwernemann 4

We have it lined up for Friday, March 18 at 1pm to take a tour of the old historic jail which has been converted to a Museum. We will also be touring another building which houses more Milam County Museum artifacts and then in another building, a miniature replica of Cameron. All of these buildings are along the square around the courthouse...very easy walking. Before our tour we will have lunch at 11am at a 50's diner in Cameron. We will meet (like we did for our cruise last year) at the Home Depot in Hutto at 9am and depart at 9:30. That gives us a good hour or so to drive through the country and have lunch at 11:00. I will definitely need a count as the date gets closer so I can let the cafe know how big a table we will need. Below is a link to see what the old jail looks like from the outside.
