MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT MEETING June 19 at Mimi s on MOPAC north 0f 183. Social hour 6 PM meeting 7:30. President s Message Last month s meeting was well attended at El Gallo by our members. Our guest speaker was Royce Richmond from the R.O.T Rally and he once again invited us to be part of the event. Royce said that this year will be a different format as the Rally will take place in two locations. The Expo Center will be hosting the event as usual for the bikers to camp and have their exhibits on display along with their bands on stage. The change is that it will also be going on downtown where they will be blocking off 50 streets for a family atmosphere. This is where the car show will be taking place, in the parking lot of the American Statesman off of So. Congress Ave. I sent out a flyer and a map showing the locations of all the downtown activity. Many from the Club are going to attend the Car Show and it will be a come and go as you please. No charge for this and a few other car clubs are invited. Also at the meeting, a check for $100 was given to our Club from Able, the owner of El Gallo to be added to our Scholarship Fund. Able was very happy that we chose his restaurant for our meetings and he wanted to show his appreciation. Thank you, Able. Along with this nights meeting, Connie Hoelscher asked our Scholarship winner to join us for dinner and introduce him to the Club members. Caleb was from Hutto and will be continuing his education in the Automotive field under Diesel mechanic. Caleb also brought along his school instructor. Thank you Connie and we will all support you during the next scholarship campaign. Our next meeting is at the Mimi's Cafe in North Austin. 2 CTCCC Meeting of May 15, 2014 minutes At El Gallo South Dan Bowen, president, opened the meeting by thanking John Anderson for bringing the equipment and running the slide show of past events. Dan introduced our visitors to the meeting: Royce Richman (Rot Rally spokesman), Kaleb Peterson (scholarship recipient), and Todd Cook (Kaleb s instructor). The minutes from the April meeting were presented and accepted. Kay Bowen presented the treasurer s report which was accepted. Dan passed out new fliers explaining the CTCCC club for members to use in recruiting new members. El Gallo restaurant presented CTCCC with a check for $ to add to our scholarship fund. Dan reported on birthdays, anniversaries, and members who are sick. He reported that Jean Sellstrom is in a coma and not doing well. Our collective thoughts and prayers go out to Jean and the other members who are experiencing health challenges. Royce Richman spoke to the club about the upcoming annual Rot Rally to explain new changes that will affect our club s participation in this event. In an effort to attract families and new, younger members, the Rot Rally will be held in two locations. The traditional event at the Expo Center will be held as usual. A co-event will be held in downtown Austin which will be geared toward families with activities for adults and children. This downtown venue is where the car show will be held June 14. This is a come and go as you please event. Dan will be sending out a map to show where we park and how to enter and exit the area. It will also indicate areas where special events will be held, toilet locations, etc. The downtown festival is free, and there will be no trophies awarded. Planned are movies shown on the river, and continuous live music. There will also be many venders at this site. Bring your tents and coolers and enjoy the event! Connie Hoelscher made the scholarship presentation to Kaleb Peterson. Kaleb is attending Hutto schools and intends to attend UTI in Houston where he will be learning diesel mechanics. He is currently restoring a pickup. His instructor, Todd Cook, describes Kaleb as standing out from the rest by not only being intelligent, but also having an artistic side to him. We wish Kaleb well in the pursuit of his career. Dan brought our newly painted trailer to the meeting. The decals have been applied and the trailer is looking great. Thank you to Gary Baker for the fine paint job. Kay Bowen discussed the Caribbean cruise she is planning for She reports there is still room for those who are interested. Date for the cruise is Feb. 15, It is a Sunday to Sunday cruise, leaving from Galveston and making three stops. The cruise line is Royal Caribbean. Contact Kay Bowen if you are interested. Lynda Rankin spoke about the Christmas party plans. The contract with Hyatt Lost Pines Resort, Bastrop has been signed. Date for the party is Sunday Dec. 7, The hours are four to eight 2

3 P.M. Members discussed the club reserving 10 rooms at the resort, but it was decided it would be too costly for the club to take the risk of having to pay if members did not show up to take the rooms reserved. Jim Rowley brought in a new sponsor, Lear Auto Center. Dan Bowen presented the O Reilly cap to Kaleb Peterson and the O Reilly coozies to Kaleb s instructor, Todd Cook The next meeting will be June 19 at Mimi s (North) Meeting Adjourned Judy Kennedy, Secretary Jean Sellstrom Some of you may not have had the pleasure of knowing the Sellstroms. They have been members for many years as you might notice from the transcription of her obituary below. Even though they stopped coming to meetings a few years ago when driving at night became difficult, they still brought their 1955 Bel Air to daytime club functions. Jim s father purchased it new at Henna Chevrolet. Jim has maintained it in original condition and it is in excellent shape. Unlike most of us who lament the fact that we didn t keep a special car, the Sellstroms kept theirs. Jim still has the Model A coupe he bought when he returned home from military service in the 1940 s. Their early 50s pickup was used in a Cindy Crawford commercial a few years ago. Jean also had some interesting stories. One was particularly interesting to me because of a song being played on the radio when I was working on my 55. The song was Beer for My Horses by Willie Nelson and Toby Keith. Until I heard her story, I thought they were taking poetic license to a new level because I had never heard of giving beer to a horse. One day when I was at their house, Jean showed me a picture of her grandfather, John Quist with horses hooked up to a fire wagon. She told the following story. In John Quist was a driver of the AUSTIN HOOK & LADDER CO. No. 1, at 114 W. 8th. Street, and earned a salary of $ per year. He and his family lived upstairs in the fire-house. They had one little son, named Arthur, born in 1891 and another son - Harry, who was born to them in 1893, while they lived there upstairs in the fire hall. One day this 3

4 youngest son crawled into the stall with one of the fire horses. The horse reached down, got a mouth full of clothing and lifted the child to safety. These horses were well trained, each day they had to be exercised to keep them in shape. When my grandfather rang the fire bell, to practice daily - the horses would rush to stand under their suspended harness which hung from the rafters, then, he released the harness and it dropped onto their backs. He then quickly hitched the team to the hook and ladder wagon, and took the ribbons - as he called the reins, in his hands, then he would race the horses down Guadalupe Street to West 2nd Street and they always stopped at Schneider s Saloon. There, while grandfather was inside - the horses would stand and wait outside the saloon for their bucket of beer, which grandfather gave them as their reward! They really seemed to look forward to this daily routine. Afterwards, they would return to the fire house on West 8th Street. After hearing that, the song made a lot more sense. Jean Quist Sellstrom, 83 passed away May 17, Born July 2, 1930, at home in Austin, Tx. Jean lived in south Austin all her life, graduating from the old Austin High School. She married James W. Sellstrom nearly 65 years ago on July 14, 1949, in Austin. Her passion was anything Swedish, Texas history, cooking and caring for her family, especially her grandchildren who called her Mormor. Member of Swedish VASA Lodge #743, Central Texas Chevy Club, and other organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred Quist and Harriet Elizabeth Belvin. Jean is survived by her husband, Jim Sellstrom; brother, Jack Quist; sister Karen Hambrick; children, David (wife Kathy), Elizabeth (husband Leslie Cadwallader) and Jonathan (wife Shannon), six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. July 2, Thank You Note Dear CTCCC, Thanks so much for the colorful spring time Flowers. They certainly brightened Joel s hospital room and Joel. Thanks again, your thoughtfulness is much appreciated.
