4000 Rockledge Drive, Austin, Texas BOW TIMES Volume 38 Number 7 July 2016 Established in 1979 to encourage the restoration and preservation of all series and models of 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets, including Corvettes and Trucks. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT MEETING Thursday July 21 at El Gallo on South Congress. Social hour 5:30PM meeting, 7:00. Hello Members of the CTCCC. President s Message Thank all of you for being a part of this Club. We have come together to encourage the restoration and preservation of all series and models of 55, 56 and 57 Chevys. In supporting this encouragement, we have some fabulous, innovative and interesting Chevys, and some wonderful and deep connections as friends. As I sat in the lobby of the hotel in Waco at Lone Star on Friday night around a table of our members, I felt so wanted and connected as a person. It was playful friendship. And it warmed my heart. Of course, I knew my long-time friend (almost 34 years now I bought it in 82) was outside and every time I think about that 57 I get goosebumps. The 56s turn 60 this year, and the 57s make it next year. Whenever we get together with our cars, I feel like I have given my car playmates. The other day in the garage, mine told me it had a crush on one of them. I laughed. We had a lot of participation with cars and members at Lone Star. Many others came too and there were many cars and a lot to look at and talk about. Some just finished beautiful classics, and the guys who built them were there. Rain was abundant but it only came in short spurts. I got great exercise wiping mine down. CTCCC won the most participation award. We gave away our awards (sourced by a committee and general votes) to a 55, 56 and 57. Houston gave me their award (I was shocked and humbled). Waco gave trophies to Al/Gwyn Burgess for their 56 and to Ed/Linda Volek for their Camaro. Dan, Kay and Jim produced a complete Application to our Lone Star in Jim announced it to the group. 1
We will be spending more and more time on Lone Star. Jim will start with some steam in our July meeting (July 21 at El Gallo). Let s have fun getting this together. It is an opportunity for us all to rally behind a great event. Thank you, Jim, for leading us again on this journey. I drove the 57 (with the top up) on Father s Day to the show at 51st and Lamar. Heck, Chester directed me in where to register. And Gary was working the event too. We had several members there to enjoy the cars. Many cool ones. I am always astonished on how many I see that I have never seen before. Maybe that is because I have had mine for 34 years!!! Gene/Sandy, Reuel/Connie, Johnny and others were there. We had two very special surprises. You could never guess. Yes, Joel and Barbara were there with their classic. We were all so happy to see them. He wanted to show me the engine and some things he had done. Made my day. Then I put my grandson in the front seat, opened up the cut outs, and drove home with a big smile on my face. We talked at the June meeting about the Holiday Party on Dec 4. We need several of you guys to be on a committee to put that on. Last year was fantastic. Some have told me they would like to have it in the same place. I will bring it up at the July meeting. Looking forward to the Poker Run on Saturday. Thank you to Mary and Marilyn for setting this up. The guys probably helped too. Summer is here. And the heat. Make sure your cooling system is working properly. Also, this marks half way through 2016 for the club. Please let me know whatever you would like to see in the rest of this year that we do not have in our sights. The officers are here to serve you. I am talking about something different that you would like to see in the club. I am taken away by the number of members stepping forward to make this a great club. See you at Kay and Dan s Ice Cream Social on Sat, July 16. We are always out of town, but I m happy that we will be here for this one. Also see you at our July meeting on Thurs, July 21, at El Gallo. Social starts at 5:30 and the meeting at 7. Safe and happy travels, Ronnie CTCCC MEETING MINUTES Minutes for June 16, 2016 meeting at Mimi's north: Meeting called to order by president Ronnie Raben. Minutes for May meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Anniversaries and birthdays were announced with congratulations to all. Lone Star XXXIV in Waco was discussed. The Waco newspaper featured a photo of the cars present Corky and Janie s 56 was in the picture. Ronnie and Robin received an award from the Houston Club for their 57 convertible. Ed and Linda Volek received 2nd place special interest award for their 68 Camaro. Al and Gwyn Burgess won an award for their beautiful 56. Our club 2
was awarded $ for highest participation. We also gave an award for our choice of a 55, 56 and 57. Jim told everyone about our Lone Star in Ronnie announced the passing of Kay Bowen's mother at age 99, and acknowledged Gladys for sending flowers. The Treasurer s report was tabled. Pam Porter gave a recap of her '56 Chevy "Alberta" she has owned and drives daily since Very informative. Chester Toothman announced that he sold his "56 Bel Air 4-dr to Lee Wood, a former club member. Ronnie told a bunch of jokes. Ronnie reminded all of the Father's Day being held June 19th, the poker run on June 25 and also a club ice cream social on July 16th at Dan and Kay Bowen's house. He also called for someone to volunteer to organize the club Holiday Party and reminded all that we still need a club activity for September. Wellness Report: Jim Rankin underwent oral surgery June 15th. He will give a full report on Lone Star at our meeting in July. Meeting was adjourned. LONE STAR 34, WACO Lone Star 34 Convention this year was held in Waco, hosted by the Heart of Texas Classic Chevy Club. This was a nice event for all 77 cars that registered and attended the show. Sammy & Patti from the Heart of Texas Club organized this year s event after a few of us helped them to make it happen. They did a great job with the hotel arrangements and the other special plans for the participants. In spite of the on and off showers during Saturday s event, many owners kept busy drying off their cars. Friday evening they provided us with a cook out and with the help from our own Ed Volek, they were on track to get the hot dogs and sausages cooked up. The Hospitality room was well stocked with munchies of chips, cookies and donuts plus soda and water all the time. On Saturday we were offered the opportunity to visit the Magnolia Market owned by Chip and Joanna from HGTV s "Fixer Upper". Transportation to the Magnolia was provided by the Holiday Inn Hotel. Many of the ladies and a few men enjoyed seeing this facility that once was a Cotton Plantation. Much history was preserved in the structures but is now turned into a retail store, bakery and seed & feed store. On Saturday afternoon the games of 50/50 and prize drawings were held. Door prizes were drawn by their Club using the registration numbers. A few of our members won prizes but not the cash from the 50/50 drawing. If Joel would have come we probably would have won that. Al Burgess and Ronnie Raben won awards for their cars. This year our Club presented 3 awards to other clubs classics of our members choice. One for each year to make it fair. There were many very nice cars attending the show. After the awards on Saturday we were invited to cruise to a "Cruise In" at an adjacent parking lot where locals meet. There were not as many as usual, they said due to the weather, but still it was 3
nice. They even had a DJ with a remote trailer playing great music. On Sunday we were all on our own to head out at our leisure. Some took off early and some stayed later since all the bad weather left the area. It was a beautiful day. Our Club had 42 members present that made us the largest participating Club at LS-34. Great showing by our Club members! One of the best things that I'm proud of is our members. We do not leave anyone behind and are always there to help our members and anyone who is having trouble. This has always been a strong point about our Club that is noticed by me and other Clubs. Well this event was no different. One of our members had trouble getting his car started. With the help of a few of our members, we put our knowledge to the test. What was the problem? Well after checking that no spark was getting to the coil it was determined that the HEI Distributor had a bad coil. Out came the tools, and a volunteer came out to drive the car owner to the parts house. After returning the second time with the new coil and fumbling with the positioning of the cap back on the distributor, we hooked the spark plug wires back on the cap. After two and a half hours of investigating the problem, determining the problem and fixing the problem we were now ready. Now for the test... crank, crank, crank no go... Then and only then when the car didn't start did the owner realize that the night before he had removed the link under the dash for the kill switch that shuts off the electric current to the ignition. Problem solved, but not forgotten... If you noticed No Names were mentioned intentionally. Happy Motoring. Dan Super Chevrolet Service 4
We all really enjoyed Lone Star in Waco. We had a great turnout and won the award for the most participation. Yes, it rained but we all tried to find the best out of it. Frank and Al taught me about those absorbent towels. They really work. I bought my own yesterday. Corky did not forget to do some burn outs. We gave awards (Don had them made up for us) for 55, 56 and 57. We move on now to hosting Lone Star in Jim announced our plans in Waco. Kay and Dan prepared a flyer that we passed out great job. Jim will be spending more time at our meetings to continue a great start on ours. Hosting this always brings our members closer together. Please step forward and offer your support. Jim called Dallas and they responded to host Lone Star in Safe travels, Ronnie Poker Run On Saturday, June 25th, we had 23 members brave weather threats, road closures and hot temperatures to have a fun Poker Run and Steak dinner at Murphy's Steak House in Winchester! Some members had to cancel their participation, for one reason or another, but everyone that did make it had a fun time! We had three winning hands. First place went to Chester Toothman with his hand of "three nines". Way to go, Chester! Second place went to Corky and Janie Lien with a pair of jacks and third place went to Al and Gwyn Burgess with a pair of nines. The service at the restaurant was great and the steaks were too! Hopefully we can do it again next year, another time, another place! August Dale Martin September Maurer October Parish Scheduled Member's Newsletter Articles 5

Just wanted to express my deep appreciation for all the support, flowers, cards & messages from our CTCCC family following the passing of my mother. 7 SEPTEMBER ACTIVITY NEEDS A PLANNER! We find ourselves in need of an event for our calendar for September. If anyone has an idea for something fun for the club to do, and is willing to plan it, please step forward and let Ronnie know. July 29 Fredericksburg Swap Meet Aug Teddy Bear BBQ & Chili Cook-off festival with a show and shine and poker run. Our web site is Aug 20 Hill Country Rally for Kids Car & Motorcycle Show. The show is scheduled for August 20, This year, the car show has a change in location from Camp McCulloch to downtown Dripping Springs. Apparently, the event organizers are limiting the number of cars in the show to 200, but I have not verified that. So CTCCC members interested in showing their rides may want to submit the form early to ensure they are registered. Labor day weekend The University Of Texas chapter of the Society Automotive Engineers would like to invite the members of your organization show their cars at the first annual University of Texas autocross and car show at Circuit of the Americas! The event will take place on Labor Day weekend. Collegiate racing teams from formula SAE will be racing cars while we host a car show in the parking lot. Formula SAE is a student design competition where students design, build, and race formula one style cars in an autocross competition each year. (I have attached a link to our website if you are interested in learning more.) We hope to customize this event for those that are interested in attending. There will be no entry fee to come show your car, and we will have prizes for top showing cars. This is a fantastic event for Austin automobile enthusiasts to get to know each other, and the racing will be premier. We are in the process of planning the event, and we would like to gauge interest. Please reply if you, or anyone you know, might be interested in showing your car at our event.
