10503 Oak Valley Trail, Austin, Texas BOW TIMES Volume 37 Number 5 May 2015 Established in 1979 to encourage the restoration and preservation of all series and models of 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets, including Corvettes and Trucks. MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE NEXT MEETING At El Gallo on South Congress. Thursday May 21st at 7:30PM. Social Hour 6 PM. President s Message With two weeks away from Lone Star 33, May 15-17th. I'm sure that you are all very busy getting your car in show condition for the trip to San Antonio. Bert Brown and the members will host this year's event and as in the past, they will have a good plan for all of us to have a great time. If you have not sent in your registration form yet, you better do so. Of course you can wait till the last minute and register at the show, but you will be making it easier for them if you send it in now. You all know this from our shows, so send it in now. Finally we have good weather for many upcoming events now. We needed the rain and the sun. Get you plans ready for Club events and share them with your other members. As you will see we have another great Club Member article in this newsletter for your enjoyment. Try to write one up about your car or your project and share it with the others, we will all enjoy it. Our next meeting is after Lone Star 33 at El Gallo South, I will try to have a video on the highlights of the show. See you at El Gallo on the 21st. Dan CTCCC Meeting minutes for April, 2015 The meeting was called to order by Dan at 2:30. He welcomed guests Morgan, 13 year old granddaughter of Tom and Pam Porter, and Abby, 14 1

year old granddaughter of Sonny and Gladys Ables. He thanked Corky and Janie Lien for hosting the meeting at their home and Ed and Linda Volek for the cooking and setup. Marilyn Peterson won the prize for knowing the secret word " molasses" that was hidden in the March newsletter. He had received many calls and s with the answer but she was the first one who was also in attendance. March minutes as presented in the newsletter were accepted. The Treasurers report was given by Kay Bowen and accepted. The Voleks and Liens were in charge of 50/50 ticket sales for scholarship fund. Janie reported that after sending out many letters, she and Linda had not been able to find anyone interested in applying for this scholarship Dan made a motion to freeze the fund and put future 50/50 money towards Lone Star 35. After much discussion the motion was amended and passed to freeze the funds and put future 50/50 money in the General Fund for the club to draw on as needed. Anniversaries and birthdays were acknowledged and the Wellness report was given. Dan advised that the months of August, October, and November were still open for planning club activities and requested that anyone planning an activity let him know well in advance so the calendar can be updated and all can be advised in the newsletter. He reviewed the list of activities planned so far. Anyone who has not paid their $20 annual dues will be dropped from the club roster for next meeting. Be sure to record your participation in club activities on the signup sheet to get credit for the End of Year award. Members are invited to write articles about themselves and their cars And submit to Pat Corbell for future newsletters. Ronnie Raben gave a report on the May 9th activity he has planned to Elgin and the car races. Robin gave a possible alternate plan for the ladies that same night and will get back to us via E- Mail with further details. Dan announced that Jim Rankin has volunteered to be the Chairman of the planning committee for LONE STAR 35. Jim gave a report and advised that he has been in negotiations with Embassy a Suites for the same rates and perks as the club had last time and is about to sign that contract. Jim is now asking for volunteers to head up the various committees for this event. Several members requested that a list of committees be provided so people can sign up for something they have an interest or expertise in. Wanda Zwerneman and Janie Lein volunteered to head up Hospitality and Gladys Ables and Linda Volek signed up to assist them. A question was put to the floor as to whether Lone Star should be opened up to clubs other than Tri Five. This discussion will continue at future meetings so that everyone can weigh in on this 2

idea. Jim Rankin, Jim Kennedy, and Dennis Zwernemann gave updates on their current car projects. Guests Morgan and Abby drew tickets for 50/50. Janie Lein won the money and Kay Bowen, Linda Volek, and Yours truly won prizes. Connie Hoelscher mentioned that the SEAS (St Elizabeth Ann Seaton) International Festival is coming up May 2-3. Ronnie Rabin mentioned the Lone Star Roundup in Austin was coming up APRIL He highly recommended the Bar B Q on Thursday and the Garage Crawl on Friday morning as events not to miss. Dan mentioned that at 5:00 TODAY is a Drive In at Trudys for charity. Dan once again thanked Corky and Janie for their hospitality and Ed and Linda for cooking the burgers and sausage and helping to get everything all set up for us to enjoy. The meeting was adjourned at approx 3:45. Gladys Ables, Club Secretary New Members Richard & Susie Waite, 4004 Bob Wire Rd, Spicewood, TX phone: Member's Car Story In 1981, I purchased a 1956 Chevy Bel Air 2 door Sedan. The main reason I bought this car was because the green 56 I had was undergoing a frame off restoration and I was missing out on Club events. This Chevy was in running condition with only having to do some small wiring repairs. The car came from Waco and at the time I found it, the CTCCC was involved with a car Auction Company at the Austin Coliseum. The engine was a 402 Big Block with a turbo 400 tranny. I attended many Rod Runs with it during the first few years. Then the engine blew up and I needed another 402 for a replacement. The 402 was a Chevrolet error that came out in the early 70's and was a good strong engine. It was a 396 over bored by the factory. The car had dual 4 barrels on a high rise manifold that stuck out of the hood. A real eye catcher standing still or driving down the road, it was sharp. The car made many shows and also many Lone Star events. Just prior to the Waco show back in the 80's, the car got stolen from out in front of my north Austin home. The car was on a trailer from just returning from the Austin Car Show and since it was icy and very cold when we got home that day, I decided to leave it on the trailer and locked the tongue hitch till I got home from work on Monday. On Monday at work, my neighbor called me and told me that someone was hooking onto the trailer and appeared that they were stealing it. She approached them and they told her to mind her own business, that's when she called me. I rushed home and sure enough the car and trailer were gone. Lucky that I had insurance on the trailer but not the car for theft. I was angry. I called the cops and they made a report. Insurance paid me for the trailer. A week later I received a call from Travis County Sheriff asking me if my yellow 56 was stolen. I told them yes and then they told me they found it in a field off Ferguson Lane. The Sheriff told me that three boys were riding 3

their bicycles around a large dirt pile when they saw men doing stuff to the car. The guys chased the kids away with a shotgun. One of the kids was the son of a County Sheriff and told his dad. The Sheriff Dept came out and recovered the car. I do not know what happened to the men. When I got the car it was pretty messed up. The engine was blown up, the tranny was leaking, the trunk was damaged where they tried to break into it. The dash was messed up from the ignition damage, and the interior was torn. But I got the car back. Once again finding another 402 was not easy. Yes I could have replaced it with a 396, 454 or a small block, but no, I wanted a 402 as they were unique. I got the car back running again with the help of Jerry Dixon. I drove the car for many years as it was until I decided to refresh the car with new paint, and interior. As of today, it is still in my garage awaiting that day. Sonny s 57 Chevy was having a few problems, so, after breakfast, we followed them back to their house, to take their Chevy back home. After they got their things out of the Chevy and into their Lincoln, we were off on our journey. There were wildflowers everywhere, it was a beautiful drive! Our first night was in San Angelo, Texas, where we enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Zentner s Daughter Steak House. The next morning, on Sunday, April 26th. we cruised on to Amarillo for the night. It was also Ed Volek's 93rd. Birthday that same day, so it was an even more fun celebrating with him on the cruise, we had a Birthday Party, with gifts and a Birthday cake, in the Hotel Room that evening, lots of fun for everyone!! We had planned to go to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, on Monday the 27th. but Mother Nature had other plans for us, as it was a very stormy day with high winds, and record rainfall! The guys went to a Classic Car Museum that morning, and the girls ventured out in the bad weather and did a little shopping! We played a lot of the card game Hand and Foot the rest of the afternoon, and sorry to say, the guys beat us girls nearly every hand!! The next morning, on Tuesday, after having an amazing breakfast at Youngblood's in Amarillo, we went on to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, and had a wonderful day sightseeing and exploring the beautiful Canyon. The colors of the rocks, and cliffs are truly remarkable! With all the rainfall, we went through a few low water crossings in the canyon, so after leaving the State Park, and getting into the next town, all of our cars got a much deserved car wash! We had a great day traveling to Abilene for the night, the route we took was so pretty, with lush Fields, Wildflowers, Canyons, Rivers, and small, quaint Towns. On Wednesday, April 29th. after leaving Abilene, we traveled to Cranfills Gap and met Wanda and Dennis Zwernemann, we all ate at the Horney Toad Bar and Grill, enjoying their famous Danwhich and Bitchwhich burgers, along with their special for the day, GREAT pork chops, with all the fixing's. From there, we traveled a short distance to Clifton, Texas, where we met Jim and Lynda Rankin at George Boutwell s Art Studio. That was really fun to see George Boutwell there, at his Studio, visit with him, and enjoy seeing a lot of his Art work. We even got a few pictures of him and the guys in front of the their cars. We stayed the night in Waco that evening, and the next morning we all went to the Texas Ranger Hall Of Fame and Museum there in Waco. That was so interesting to go through the Museum, and watch a very good movie about the early years of the Texas Rangers. We all traveled back home on Thursday April 30th. with many good memories of our trip together. All in all, we traveled over 1,300 miles without any car troubles, or mishaps...thank You all for either going with us, or meeting us this year : ) Janie and Corky Lien 5

Hi everyone, CTCCC May Event As we mentioned in the last meeting, we have an alternate option for this Saturday s event at the races some of us ladies weren t too interested in the racing part of the event so I offered to find another activity that we could do at the same time. In order to keep this evening somewhat of a club function, I propose that we all share dinner regardless of whether we are going to the races or the wine bar after. They will have live music, they serve wine/beer and appetizers. Dinner is at 5:00 at Southside BBQ, 1212 Hwy 290, Elgin, TX If you prefer to skip the race, you are welcome to join us after dinner at the OWL WINE BAR in Elgin. Address: 106 N. Main St., Elgin, TX Phone: (512) They close at 10pm which I think is going to be an earlier end of evening time than the race-goers will want, so you might want to bring your own car and don t drive if you are under the influence!!!!!!!!!!!!! See you Saturday!! Robin Raben Host: Ronnie and Robin Raben Date: Saturday, May 9, 2015 Meet: 5:00 pm at Southside BBQ, 1212 Hwy 290, Elgin, TX Destination: Cotton Bowl Speedway, East of Paige, Texas at the intersection of US Hwy 290 and County Road Our May activity for CTCCC will be barbecue and stock car races. We will meet at 5:00 at Southside BBQ in Elgin for dinner. After dinner, we will proceed together east on 290 to Cotton Bowl Speedway, which is just a few miles before Giddings. It will be about a 30 minute drive. There are a couple things to know. First, the races are on a dirt track, so rain may cause a cancellation. The best way to find out if there has been a cancellation is to go to their website. We will send out an if we catch a cancellation before you do. Second, it is dirty out there! So some of you might not want to bring your classic, and we suggest you wear a cap and have safety glasses to keep the dust and dirt out of your hair and eyes. Bring your stadium seats if you have them because there are no seatbacks. We have picked May 9 because the sprint cars run on the 3/8 mile dirt track that evening. Parking is free. The admission prices are normally $12 for adults, but because of the sprint cars it will probably be $15. There is a discount for seniors (I think $10). You buy the tickets at the track the 6

night of the event. We will all try to sit together. They have concessions there, but the lines are usually long when the sprint cars run so we suggest that you bring your own snacks. The heat races begin about 8:30, so the evening gets a little late as they run a main event for each class. You can obviously leave whenever you would like. In any event, you want to miss the traffic jam at the very end of the evening. Ronnie s Dad owned Speedrome, a dirt oval track in Wichita Falls, so he is very familiar with the lifestyle around stock car racing, and is excited to have ya ll join him on this adventure. Jim Rankin said that he used to MC the races in Austin. We hope this will be a fun activity for CTCCC. Let us know if you have any questions. rraben@austin.rr.com, Ronnie Cell, Robin Cell, Home Upcoming Events May 9 Cruise to Cotton Bowl Speedway, Paige TX. Club Activity. May 9 The Fly-In or Drive In at San Marcos Airport is this Saturday, May 9th. Registration for day of the show is 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Can't wait for this great event! The show is for Specialty or Classic vehicles or planes so drive in or fly-in. We will also be celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, called VE Day. We will recognize these heroes at the show May Lone Star XXXIII San Antonio Texas May Super Chevy Show Texas Motorplex, 7500 W.
