2 CHAPTER DIRECTORS Randy & Linda Porter Beautiful October Beautiful Riding; Beautiful Leafs; Beautiful Birthdays; Yes Linda and I both Celebrate our Birthdays in October, So For US, It's Special! Our fall ride has come and gone. They always seem to start out a little cool in the mornings, and this one was no different. We left from Rt 13 exit off I-71 and rode to Nelsonville, Oh. By the time we were in Nelsonville we were warm and toasty. We rode the local train, which could have been more exciting, but we were together and that made it wonderful. Our group is very special, and we always do things to make everyone laugh. We want to thank Rich and Susan for leading the way. We went to Parkersburg, WV for a nice room and Susan had found a wonderful Restaurant for all. We spent the night in Parkersburg with a good breakfast in the morning. We left the hotel and headed for the triple nickel. The triple nickel is Ohio highway 555 from almost the Ohio River to Zanesville, OH. And guess who was leading the trip to Zanesville??? Yes, it was me. Wow, what a thrill!! We all made it and it was fun. Narrow and curvy, but smooth. I want to thank Al and Cathy for stepping up to taking the ACD position. They are going to be wonderful. And to help out the chapter Debbe and Larry are going to be ride coordinators so Al and Cathy can move up. We have such wonderful members The November weather usually stops our rides on the bikes, but we still have our dinner rides by car, so if you need a ride, let someone know and they will try to help. Thought for the day The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. Linda and Randy HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! 2

4 CHAPTER MOTORIST AWARENESS Raymond & Ritchel Sipe Happy Riding, Raymond & Ritchel NEWSLETTER EDITORS JIM & CAROL CULLER It it s November, it must be winter. For all of us who spend our winter months, here at home, we hope it s not as intense as last year. Our October meeting was conducted by our new ACD s, Al Nighswander and he did a great job (as we knew he would). The temperature that morning was a cool 30 degrees and we had 4 bikes in the parking lot. Don Schroeder, Al Nighswander, Dennis Long and, of course, Raymond Sipe; these are some tough guys!! And, Raymond was even sporting sandals!! He said it was fine since he was wearing socks!! Can you imagine!! We were glad to see Pat Morley and Rob and Lucy Kennedy at the meeting. Lucy has been in and out of the hospital a lot lately; however, she was as cheerful and sweet as ever. Larry Steinhilber was the BIG WINNER for the member number which had accumulated up to $ Must be a good sign that his luck is changing. Our daughter, Kelly, went deer hunting with her bow and got an 8 pt. buck. She was proud she got a deer before her husband Todd. Todd said he would never hear the end of this one; and we just know he won t. See you at the meeting, Jim and Carol SENIOR CHAPTER EDUCATORS TED & JOYCE STRUTZ EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR 2014 Hard to believe another riding season is coming to an end. Don't you think winter should be the short season instead of summer? Why did summer get the short end of the stick? Mother Nature must like winter the best! Until global warming makes snow and ice a fond and distant memory, some of will still have to put our bikes in storage for the winter. Here are some important tips so your ride will be ready in the spring. 4

5 Fill the gas tank and add fuel stabilizer. Run the engine long enough to distribute stabilizer to all parts of the fuel system. The most common casualty of long term storage is the battery. If the charge gets too low it will never come back. Hook it up to a maintenance charger that brings it up to the recommended charge, shuts off, and then comes back on if the voltage drops below a specified level. It's not a bad idea to check the engine's coolant too. Use a float tester to see if the coolant needs a boost. Engine oil collects and suspends contaminants until the oil filter removes them. But there's always some bad stuff in the oil, and giving it the entire winter to nibble away at your engine's innards is a bad idea. Change the oil and filter before storage, and run the engine long enough to distribute clean oil to all the internal parts. A bonus here is that when you take the bike out of storage in the spring there is one less thing to do to get ready for the riding season. Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure. Put the bike on the center stand and rotate the front tire now and then to prevent a flat spot from forming. Don't put protectant on the sidewalls - many tire manufacturers recommend against it - and certainly not on the tread. Wash and wax the bike, then put a breathable cover on it to prevent moisture from building up underneath and causing rust. If you share your garage, however unwillingly, with small furry critters, block the air box inlet to keep little mice from building little houses inside. I know most of us are all old hands at all this, but it is too easy to forget something; I find the older I get the easier it becomes! 1996 GL1500 SE Tulsa vented windshield Hartco touring seat Baker built air and hand wings Compu-fire alternator New battery Around 3000 miles on Elite III's Extra chrome and lights $6,000 or Best Offer. 7 Ride Coordinator Susan Kennedy HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND NOVEMBER What a ride, oh yeah, what a ride!!! What a great ride to end this riding season on. These were a couple of the comments I heard after Chapter B took their fall ride on October 10 & 11. Saturday morning was a bit chilly to start, however, the sun came out and our tummies were warmed by the food at Cracker Barrel. Plus having 33 good friends on the ride warmed my heart! With a bit of a breeze in our faces we hopped on our 2 and 3 wheelers and down the road we went. We wound our way to Mt. Vernon, then Granville and finally Lancaster for a quick sandwich and break. Saying goodbye to Lancaster we arrived at Nelsonville where we boarded the Hocking Valley Scenic RR train for a 2 hour ride. The Hocking Valley Scenic RR is maned by all volunteers who love railroads and give up their time to preserve a portion of our past. Along the ride we learned about some of the towns, the people of the area, as well as the railroad itself. Near the end of the train trip we disembarked to find ourselves transported to a yesteryear village where we enjoyed lumberjacks, music, food and naturalists with reptiles, owls and hawks. We also observed rug and candle makers. When the whistle blew it was time to leave Nelsonville behind and venture onward. We crossed the mighty Ohio River into West Virginia spending the night in Parkersburg. I can only speak for myself, but the BBQ Ribs I had at George s Place were the best I ve had in a very long time. George was a great host and I am hopeful that everyone else had good food as well. Some of us hit the hay early while those like me were just getting their second wind played dice and cards in the hotel common area. After a wonderful breakfast served at the hotel Sunday morning, it was the ride of today that had me excited. Riding the 555 (triple nickel)!! Twists and turns, curves and hills.oh boy, I m ready for this!! The Triple Nickel (Rt. 555) did not disappoint. We took our time and enjoyed each and every mile. I believe Kathy Nighswander started counting the number of curves but somewhere along the way she gave up. The leaves had only started to turn so that was a bit disappointing. BUT that ride, oh the ride, yes the ride with 33 special people made this trip one to remember! Remember it is the ride, and those you ride with! Our Chapter is proud of Dennis for all his hard work with the Ride for Kids. Susan 7

10 Hello everybody, MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT BONNIE LANTZ We are having such nice weather; it is hard to think about winter right now. We have been cutting firewood all week to get stocked up for what we all know is on the way. We are planning on going to Arizona for a month this winter, or we were planning on it. I am not quite sure what to expect from Arizona. I heard on the news last night that Arizona had 5 inches of snow. I asked Jerry what this is all about. You want me to leave Ohio to go somewhere that is already having 5 inches of snow. I guess that I need to get out my Arizona map to check out just where Flagstaff is located compared to where we are going. I have boots, coats, and all of the cold weather crap; I was just hoping not to have to use all of it this year. I have been in Ohio all of my life and I know that I have to just wait and things will change. SEE YOU SOON, BONNIE 10
