CHAPTER DIRECTORS RANDY AND LINDA PORTER The 4 th of July is over. Labor Day is not here yet. So riding season is here now. So let's just do it! AUGUST 20 TH MEETING 10 A.M. July has been a Wonderful riding time for Linda and I. We, and I mean a total of 8 chapter members went to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton Island. It was a wonderful trip for me as I went through a little scare before we left. We were to leave on Sunday the 25 th of June. Well the week before I was having a little heart issue, so the Dr. said he wanted me to have heart Cath before we left for our trip. I was not sure it was going to work out for us to leave because he scheduled the Cath on Friday the 23 rd. But we decided to go for it and it worked out for the best. I had the Cath and they put in one stint. The doctors told Linda and I that I had to stay one night in the hospital and could not drive for 2 days which meant Monday was as early as we could leave. Everyone else left on Sunday and went to Pa. to visit some friends. So, while they were visiting, we left on Monday and caught up with them that night. We spent the night with the Pa. people and everyone left on Tuesday for parts unknown. We drove across Pa., New York, Vermont, and Maine. We spent 2 nights in Portland, Maine then got on a Ferry called the Cat which went from Portland to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The Cat was feeling her oats most of the way over and knocked over a few bikes, including Larry Steinhilber's, which was tied down; but it got knocked down any way. Larry and Debbe were thinking of up grading to an 1800 but the fall may help the cause. It split the windshield diagonally, so he rode the rest of the trip looking through one half of the windshield, which is not the only bad luck the 1500 had. It needed a new battery and many fuses. The left turn signals worked part time, but other than that, it ran great; as did the rest of the trikes. We only had three days of rain in the 24 days of riding. WHAT A GREAT 4000 MILE TRIP! August had the Charity Fun Run on the 5 th. This entailed a preplanned ride of about two hours with four stops. There were also 30 questions to answer about things along the way. All met at Granny's around 5:30 for checking answers and time to eat.. Don Wiggins from the Flying Horse Farms was there to sell raffle tickets, but there were not enough in attendance to play games or have the 50/50. Then, the Progressive Dinner Ride was on the 12 th. The started with appetizers, hosted by Tim and Beth Kruger (Galion); followed by salads at Mike and Judy Border's (Lexington); followed by the Entree at our home (Wooster) and ending up for desserts at Al and Cathy Nighswander (Tiro). It was a great afternoon/evening of riding, eating and friendship. At the end of the ride, at Al and Cathy s, the participants turned in their tickets for the drawing. Buck Howard and Mary Bash won the gift cards. Our Chapter does so many great things and enjoys the rides!! Check your chapter ride and dinner ride schedule to see all the exciting things coming our way. GWRRA 2
(National) is putting more emphasis on FUN, but our chapter already knows how to do that. Wing Ding isn't far into the future. Are you going? Make sure you get your reservation in soon. They still have rooms available and it sounds like they have some great give aways. Maybe you will be the lucky one to win the new HONDA GOLDWING. Thanks to all the Chapter B members who help in any way to make our chapter what it is. It is only with each contribution that we do that makes us great. CHAPTER B ROCKS!!! THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Courage is nothing more than taking one step more than you think you can. By Holly Lisle, American writer and poet ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS AL & CATHY NIGHSWANDER I hate to start out with bad news but I have too IT IS AUGUST!! We are exceeding the speed limit in enjoying our summer riding season. OMG! Stop the clock hands. You know, I listened to the GWRRA national director s speech on change. The part I loved most is hearing that we will focus on making new friends, enjoying the ride with old friends, and the FOCUS remains on the RIDE instead of rules. Al and I have not had much time to ride together this summer. Family and other responsibilities have not made it possible. However, he took a great trip to New York. Did he share with you? This is Al s idea of a great ride He left the house on a Thursday morning at 7 A.M. He was headed to Utica, New York to visit an old friend. He stopped in Erie, PA for gas and RR. (3 hours before stopping. Really?!) Back on the road. He hit rain around 12:30 and was FORCED to pull over. This was in Buffalo, NY. He bought gas and waited for the rain to slow. He was in Utica by 5:15 Let s say he rested a total of one hour. This was 500 miles in 9 hours! The return trip was very similar. (BTW, This is not his top mileage for one day.) I understand that interstates and turnpikes are not his route choice so he just wanted to get through it, and I understand that he just wanted to get to his friend s home, BUT this is a bit excessive (HaHaHa, Al wants you to know that MapQuest said this is a 7.5 hour ride. We all know about the reliability of MapQuest.!!) The reason I write this is because I need some help. Al and I must have monitors, friends, leaders, when we ride together so that I am not subjected to this iron butt riding!! Just as the national leader says it is about the ride! Help me! I like leisurely rest breaks and lunches, shopping, and ice cream breaks. Let s ride Friends for fun safety and knowledge Sincerely, Al and Cathy 3
SENIOR CHAPTER EDUCATORS TED & JOYCE STRUTZ TRACKING ARRIVAL of the UNEXPECTED Your clues about potential risks are in the mail and in the trash. It's easy to overlook mailboxes and trash cans along the road, but both mean potential stopped vehicles ahead. Today, in the age of Amazon, we have an unprecedented ability to track shipments, know exactly where a parcel is at any given point and even when it will arrive on our doorstep. Imagine having that same ability to predict the arrival of potential threats out on the road. Fortunately, that information may be right under our nose. Or, more accurately, at the edge of the road. As we enjoy a ride down a rolling and twisting country back road and take in the view of the countryside, we often overlook key "tracking" information or fail to assign meaning to seemingly unimposing visual clues like mailboxes. Along back roads, mailboxes are often placed immediately at the road's edge. That means postal vehicles must stop on the road, at least partially obstructing the lane, to fill those boxes. Recognize the mailboxes are notices there may be a postal carrier parked at another box just beyond your view. Remember, even small hillcrests can hide vehicles from view. Mailboxes to your left update you that a postal carrier may be approaching from the opposite direction and oncoming traffic may need to swing wide to get around it. While we are looking for valuable threat tracking information, consider those trash cans at the curbside. They are a good indication of a trash pickup day, and the increases likelihood that a stopped garbage truck and wandering sanitation worker will be delivered into your riding scene just ahead. So, the next time you see a line of mailboxes along the edge of a rural roadway or trash cans at the curb, they may just be delivering an important tracking message to you. Your surprise package will be delivered in approximately 500 feet. Main St., Hayesville Sept G & R Tavern, 103 No. Marion St., Waldo 28 - Old Farmstead Restaurant, 618 SR 61, Marengo Jerry McAvoy, Bonnie Lantz, Don Schroeder, Deb Parks, Randy and Linda Porter and Larry and I returned home on July 18 from our 24 day trip to Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Kennebunkport, Maine, Groton, Connecticut and Bellefonte, Pennsylvania having traveled about 4,250 miles. We started our trip with a two day visit to the home of Joe & Rett Worrick in Bellefonte. They graciously allowed us to stay in their home treating us to a cookout the first day and a great 125 mile ride the second day. From there it was on to Portland, Maine 5
to catch the ferry to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Larry was made to put our bike on its' side stand when strapping it down and when we encountered severe weather while out to sea the bike fell over on its' opposite side hitting a pole and breaking its' windshield in half, breaking off part of his wind wing and his air horns. Everywhere we went after that people wanted to know what happened to the windshield and Larry tried to convince them it was a new style. Another part broke which knocked out our speedometer so we went the whole time we were in Canada without a speedometer. Of course, the guys tried to convince me it was time for a new Even with all the mishaps, we had a great time with great friends. We especially enjoyed sitting around the campfire at night roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Before the trip was over, we were all graduates of the Deb Parks School of Marshmallow Roasting. She has a technique that toasts the marshmallows evenly and swells them to twice their original size. We met a young boy who had just turned three who was originally from England and neither he nor his parents had ever had a roasted marshmallow. It was a delight to see his face when he ate one and he said he couldn't wait to tell his friend Annabelle that he had a "toasted marshmallow". Although we didn't see a Moose like we hoped, we did see a black bear beside the highway and were able to see our grandson in Groton where he gave us a tour of the submarine base. We had such a good time we are already planning a trip to the West coast to see the redwoods next year. larry & Debbe \2017 COUPLE OF THE YEAR TIM AND BETH KRUGER Hello Chapter B! First I want to apologize for missing last month s newsletter. I'm just gonna say I think it was Tim's turn to write the article...haha. Wow, it seems like we were just saying hello to spring!! Now we're already stepping into August. Time truly is flying before our eyes! It was great seeing all the smiling faces at the picnic ride (so glad nobody got sick from our cooking). We have truly met some wonderful people through GWRRA. Everyone seems to step up to the plate when help is needed. Thought for the month: The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.: Until next month! Tim and Beth 6
RIDE COORDINATOR OPEN NEWSLETTER EDITORS JIM AND CAROL CULLER Hi Everyone: Remember Sunday, August 20 th Meeting will began at 10:00 A.M.- RIDE TO OHIO HEALTH SYSTEM TO FOLLOW. We really don t know how to put this other than to say Our Charity Poker Run, August 5 th was not the success it had been in the past when it was held at Country Kitchen (that was one name it went by over the years) on Rt. 250 between Ashland and Wooster. At that time it was called Midnight Fun Run and we always had a hugh crowd which included bike members from several different chapters and non-members on bikes other than GWRRA..even on rainy nights. This year we had 9 bikes on the ride all Chapter B Members then a few more showed up at Granny s all Chapter B Members. Due to the low turnout, we didn t have the games or the for the Flying Horse Farms. This was discussed by the staff and agreed that our Chapter would write a check donation to the Flying Horse Farms. We do want to thank everyone who did come and participate and a HUGH THANKS to Granny s for hosting the event. We re sure Granny s were just as disappointed as we were. The staff worked hard to make this event a success, but no amount of work can make an event without the participation of all our members. IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW TO IMPROVE THIS RIDE, PLEASE LET US KNOW AT THE MEETING. The Progressive Dinner Ride was a success and from everything we heard, the food and friendship was great. The weather who could have asked for better weather than we had. Buck Howard won a Gift Card to the Olive Garden and Mary Bash won a gift card. Congratulations to both. Ron Kinney, Chapter B Member, passed away Saturday morning, August 5 th following complications from a car accident. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family and friends. Thanks to all the members who attended the calling hours with the Chapter on Sunday. REMEMBER: Our Teddy Bear Ride will follow our August 20 th Meeting. Hopetully we will have a fantastic attendance. SEE YOU SOON, JIM AND CAROL MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT BONNIE LANTZ 7 Bonnie
SUNSHINE LADY BARB HOWARD As you all know, Ron Kinney 71, passed away Saturday, August 5 th following complications from a car accident. Ron s obituary says he was a member of GWRRA and that he enjoyed attending the breakfasts at the Liederkranz and riding with his motorcycle friends. Ron s calling hours were from 1-3 pm on Sunday at Wappner Funeral Home on Diamond Street in Mansfield. Chapter B Members met at the funeral home at 1 pm on Sunday, August 13 th. There were approximately 12 members there. Thanks so much to those who were able to attend as their daughter told Jim how much she appreciated it as she remembered the times he brought her to the meetings.. Our prayers and thoughts also go out to Jerry & Barb Kirkpatrick. Jerry s brother, John, passed away Sunday, July 30 th. He was 83 years old. Hope everyone had fun at the Progressive Dinner Ride on Saturday; we certainly did. We had fantastic weather, great food, great ride and great friendship-. What more could anyone ever want. If you didn t attend, you missed a great time. BIT OF HUMOR: Much love to all, Barb 8
