2 The ride to the Car Museums in Evansville was enjoyed by all. November 2017 Another riding season is now over (hope for at least one more good day) and we are preparing for the long winter. On the bright side, every day gets closer to next years riding events. Think about where you would like to go in The ride committee will meet after the first of the year and plan next years rides and events. Reflecting back on the 2017 ride schedule, we had a good time riding and visiting with our Goldwing friends. One of our first rides in 2017 was the Gravity Hill Ride. It was a good ride, even though we did not really get to experience the true feel of the Gravity. I guess you can say this ride was one that didn't quite make it "up the hill"!!!! The 4th of July parade in Otwell was well attended and everyone had a good time tossing candy, waving and being patriotic. It has rained so much lately that the ARK EXPERIENCE is almost a reality. The Solar Eclipse was an enlightening rare event. The next nearest thing to the Sun eclipse was our experience with the Moon. That is Moonshine, Illinois and the great Moon burgers they serve there. So, as you can see, we defied GRAVITY, waved the FLAG on JULY 4th, experienced Noah and the ARK, was astonished by the SUN and enjoyed the MOONshine burgers, and had a great time being DRIVEN to the car museum.. What will we do in 2018? Looking forward to whatever we do. I was unable to attend the officer's meeting in Lafayette due to health problems (a bad back). Gary and Carol attended and will give us a report on what is going on with GWRRA. Christmas is rapidly approaching, and plans are being made for our annual Christmas Party/Gathering. The Christmas Gathering will again be at the Otwell Methodist church banquet hall on Saturday January 13th. Make plans to attend. We are doing the meal a little different this time. For the meat choices we will have barbequed ribs and fried chicken. We will not have a gathering on January 20th. On Saturday November 25, 2017 Chapter M will be participating in the Washington Christmas parade. More details will be discussed at the November gathering. 3 November 2017 Hello Indiana District members, Fall has arrived, and we are grasping, at every opportunity, to ride one more time, before bedding our bike down for the winter. It is all bittersweet as we remember the rides from the summer and the anticipation of next years trips. The winter will have Winter Rendezvous Feb. 9-10, 2018 for us to rejoin our friends for a weekend of fun together. The registration is on the website and we will be gathering in Shipshewana, In. at the Farmstead Inn. I am looking forward to seeing many of you again in Shipshewana. We held our fall meeting on the 28th of October. At this meeting we discussed new positions at the chapter level. We held an open forum and received a great deal of input. It was mentioned that we wait to, make a decision, so the representatives could go back to their chapters and asked for input from members there. So, we are looking forward to receiving more ideas of how, we can make our events more appealing to the members. The new changes from National has allowed us to invite, Joe and Paula Swift, to join the district team as our Motorist Awareness directors. They will be bringing the GWRRA programs for Motorist Awareness to the community. Our focus on safety is, our biggest asset, we can share with all riders and drivers. Thanks to Gary Ballou, Lloyd s body double, Region D Motorist Awareness director for coming and installing Joe and Paula. Chris Jacobs was introduced as our incoming district ride coordinator. Her duties will be to keep as many chapter and district rides posted on the rider education calendar. This will be a central location for any motorcycle rider and/or GWRRA member, not associated with a chapter, to locate a ride to attend. The main intent of the structure changes to GWRRA is to increase communication, amongst members, and increase exposure to potential members. Growth of the membership numbers is one of the anticipated results. Also, the officer responsibilities at the chapter level have been changed. Not as much paperwork and reporting is being required. A Big Thank You goes out to Chapter K for the Fantastic Lunch that was served. The donuts for breakfast and plenty of coffee and other soft drinks were a great help for our long day. Rhonda Culbertson and the Ladies and gentlemen of Chapter K work together very well and know how to put on a great meal. Hoping to see all of you on the road. Debbie Cole offered the opening prayer. 2. Darrel welcomed the members, recognized our Couples of the Year and Individuals of the Year past and present who were in attendance and welcomed our guests. 3. Darrel offered congratulations to the members with birthdays or anniversaries in October. 4. Steve Whitehead gave the safety report on fall riding hazards. With fall here, riders need to be especially vigilant of the hazards this time of year presents. Farmers are gathering in crops and that means large, slow moving equipment traveling the roadways and spilled grain on the asphalt. The spilled grain can be like driving on small marbles especially if it s in a curve. Deer are on the move and with deer hunting seasoning approaching they will be even more active. Watch for patches of wet leaves on the roadway, they can be as slick as black ice. With wintry weather approaching make sure you check out your cold-weather riding gear to avoid hypothermia. Steve also asked how many co-riders know what to do in the event the driver has a medical emergency and could not control the bike. Do you know what the kill switch is and where it s located? Could you steer the bike to the edge of the roadway? This would be much more difficult for the 2-wheel co-riders, but trike co-riders should practice this maneuver in the driveway or parking lot and be familiar with it. 5. Darrel issued a challenge for all the members to bring a guest to the November Gathering. 6. Future events coming up included the Washington Christmas Parade on November 25, 2017 and the Chapter M Christmas Party on Saturday January 13, More details will be given at the November gathering 7. As always keep saving those hotel toiletries and empty printer ink cartridges Carol will take ANY empty ink cartridges; and your hotel toiletries will be donated for disaster relief again this winter. 5 Howard Gingerich - Chapter M Safety Educator 3 Types of Distracted Driving Multitasking, once confined to the workplace, is now a staple of everyday life. On top of the traditional distractions, technological leaps are making distracted driving more of a danger than ever before. distracted driving accidents According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving was a cause of roughly 424,000 accident-related injuries and some 3,154 fatalities in 2013 alone. Because this data comes from police reports, which may not record all driving distractions, the true figure is likely higher. Distracted driving comes in 3 different forms: Cognitive distraction Cognitive or mental distraction is when a driver's mind isn't focused on driving. Talking to another passenger or being preoccupied with personal, family, or work-related issues are some examples. Even drivers listening to their favorite podcast or radio station are at risk; the audio can take drivers' focus away from their driving and overall surroundings. Visual distraction Visual distraction occurs when a driver looks at anything other than the road ahead. Drivers who check the kids' seat belts while driving are visually distracted. 6 Electronic devices for the car, such as GPS devices and portable DVDs/digital entertainment systems, also distract drivers. Manual distraction Manual distraction is when the driver takes one or both hands off the wheel for any reason. Some common examples include eating and drinking in the car, adjusting the GPS, or trying to get something from a purse, wallet, or briefcase. Texting and driving is particularly dangerous because it involves all 3 forms. 5 tips to avoid common driving distractions Keeping your focus on the road can be easier said than done. Here are some things you can do to avoid this common problem. Turn off your cell phone even if you're expecting an important business call. If you need to be reachable at all times, get a hands-free device to use only in case of emergency. Why only in emergencies? Because studies have shown that hands-free devices prove just as distracting as normal cell phone use while driving. When driving with children or pets, make sure the kids are strapped into their seats and pets are in carriers. If they need your attention during the drive, pull over before handling the situation. Eat before or after you drive. Just don't eat while driving. Program your GPS before you leave the driveway. driving and multitasking don t mix We know it's tempting to answer that or reprogram that GPS which just rebooted itself for the third time. But if you're able to resist the temptation and focus on the road ahead, you'll be able to react to the unexpected and maybe even avoid an accident. Don t be this guy
