3 Chapter Team Directors Mike & Lois Monday Well that W word is getting closer, are we ready for it. NNNOOOO. It s BBBRRRR. We had our last ice cream ride and afterwards, went to visit Mark Wolford. He was very happy to see us all. Let us not forget our members who are physically challenged or ill. Let them know we have not forgotten them. Thank you staff and members for a great Staff gathering. A lot was accomplished. THANK YOU Mark and Sue for a great fall ride. There was color galore and a great ride. There was 8 bikes and 1car. Now Bob and Marilyn s weekend did not end as well for their car was hit in the front. They are okay. Their car just likes getting hit, for the 3rd time. THANK YOU Dave and Bonnie for the chill cookout. Your soups were great and always a great time. In November is our officer meeting. One day on the 8th. I have attached the where, when and who needs to attend. Please let us know if you are going or not so we can get your info. I do have info on the hotel if you want to go the night before. Then, also in November, the Lunch and Shop with the Hoovers. This is, we meet for lunch and afterwards, the guys go to harbor freight and the gals shop. This is also the time for those who volunteer for a center piece for the Christmas party, to buy or get ideas. Then we go back to the Hoovers. Guys watch the game and the gals play games. 6 Rider Educators Mark & Sue Rupert RIDER EDUCATION So far as we know Honda has not found a fix for the rear brake dragging on some of the 1800 Goldwing s. The problem seems to be in the proportioning valve for the rear brake. The best thing to do before and after each ride is make sure the rear wheel turns freely. This is best done with the bike put up on the center stand. You can also check it while riding by checking how it coasts at slow speed with the clutch disengaged or see how freely the bike moves when stopped. If you detect any drag on the bike, safely pull over, stop and closely examine the rear wheel for drag or excessive heat. Page 20 of the November Wing World magazine has a very good article on tires. It is worth your while to read this article. The one thing they don t tell you is to measure tread depth and replace the tires if the depth is less than 3/32th of an inch. Using a penny the tread should touch the top of Lincolns head or beyond. I have written articles on fall riding in the past. The one thing I did not include for things to beware of besides deer, critters, black ice and wet leaves is nuts falling from trees along the roadside. Sue and I were in the Smoky Mountains 3 weeks ago when something hit my helmet with a big bang and a couple of days later I was hit in the right cheek which really hurt. Sue or I did not see what hit me but a falling walnut or hickory nut would be my best guess. Another reason to wear a helmet. Although in the second instance it didn t help much. So beware of everything around and above you. Your Chapter Rider Educators Droopy and Sue Rupert 6

9 Motorist Awareness Dave & Bonnie Bettinger MOTORIST AWARENESS With this being such a busy week for us, I will make this motorist awareness article short. Being seen is often as much about riding style as it is about lights and gear. Where we place our bike on the roadway can allow other drivers to see us more clearly. Try not to position yourself behind trucks and vans. Drivers approaching from the other direction can t see us and may turn into our path before they are aware we are there. If it is necessary to follow these vehicles, please slow down. Allow plenty of room between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. Give approaching vehicles an opportunity to see us as they approach. The more distance between our bikes and the vehicle ahead the better. It is our responsibility to dress and ride to be seen. Motorcyclist as a whole are much more aware of traffic than other drivers. We have to be. There is no amount of gear that can protect the careless operator. Perhaps the best technique for safe cycling is to slow down. Using common sense and making ourselves conspicuous to other drivers is a key component in returning home safe. I realize there won t be too many more riding days left, but what there is, the goblins are gone, but turkeys are loose. ON THE LIGHTER NOTE After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for social security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver s license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. hair. The woman said Unbutton your shirt. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver She said, That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me and she processed my social security application. 9 When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too. Safe Riding, Look Aware Life is Sweet Dave and Bonnie Bettinger
