CHAPTER DIRECTORS AL & CATHY NIGHSWANDER How great was the Buckeye Rally!!! It was totally awesome. Thank you, Chapter B for your hard work, support, involvement, laughter, stories, great food, well, just everything! It was great to work with the Ohio District staff to present a great rally. Speaking of the district team we want to take the opportunity to congratulate and thank Rudy and Linda Copeland and Randy Young for their leadership and work in Ohio GWRRA. Enjoy yourselves!! WELCOME to Ray and Becky Jones as the new District Directors and Doug and Lynn Kerst as the new Assistant Directors for North Central Ohio! We will be excited to attend next year s rally in Wooster for Oh, the Places You Have Traveled. We have items that need to find their home. White sheets, painting supplies, a movie screen, and letter stencils. We will bring them to the next meeting so that you can claim them, Linda and Randy, Jerry and Rita, Ron, and Debbe and Larry! Plenty of white paint is available if you need any AND red solo cups you fill me up! Let s have a party. Let s have a party! Proceed to the party, which. After the July meeting is the $5 picnic ride!! I ll bring the Red Solo Cups!! Randy and Linda Porter volunteered to book the accommodations. We will be cruising to East Harbor State Park and onto Toft s for ice cream. Meat and drink is provided by the chapter. This is always a great time; maybe you would like to invite a motorcycle rider, who is not in a chapter, to check out ours!! Also, we will need leaders and tails for the ride! Shiloh Ox Roast Festival is also coming up in July! Don t forget to bring supplies for the Richland County Humane Society! They do such great work and very much appreciate our Chapter s help. Hugs, Al and Cathy ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS MIKE & CHERYL FINLEY The buckeye rally is over with it s hot, muggy, and hazy weather and with more to come in July. Our big problem now is that we have a mouse in the trunk of our motorcycle! We have been feeding him peanut butter on a mouse trap, but still no mouse. Hopefully he decided to move on, or out, as the case may be. 2
The riding season is in full swing and with the temperatures being so high it was time for new half shell helmets that were not black. We went to Iron Pony and got a new three hundred dollar "t" shirt and two free helmets. We now think we are ready. We are preparing the camper for fun when we go with Al & Cathy to Gettysburg. Our camp sites will be right beside each other; with hopes on seeing and riding everywhere. Hope we can get some good photos. speaking of which, at the buckeye rally for those that missed it. Mary and Scott & Jim and Carol helped get the picture show for our drive in movie. A big thanks go out to those four, it was fantastic getting to see new and old pictures of the group. Also, a big thanks for everyone that helped get ready for the Rally; we had great decorations and appreciate everyone's help. It takes a lot of work and Al & Cathy & Jim & Carol came up with some great ideas. However, everyone helped get things done and worked together to make the Rally and Chapter B a success. Chapter B won the best daytime and nighttime campsite, yeh! And, I must say, many more awards.. MIKE AND CHERYL ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS JIM & CAROL CULLER Well, the first 6 months of 2018 is already gone!! Al and Cathy, with the help of many Chapter B Members working many hours in their shop and other work stations, made a lot of displays for the Buckeye Rally. We got a lot of positive comments about all the effort. Thanks to all that helped and participated in all the preparations and all that attended the Rally. It was certainly appreciated. Several of Chapter B Members attended the successful Road Captain s Course. Chapter B took a lot of the awards at the closing: The drive-in movie/campsite took 1 st place Chapter B s Mascot Freedom took 1 st place Our 1800 took 1 st place in the 1800 class The Old Girl our 1100 took 1 st place Jerry Eldridge took 1 st place in the 1500 class Rich Bomboris took 2 nd place with his decked out GL1100. Gage rode the 1100 over on Saturday, for the bike show, and got a certificate for being the youngest driver to ride a Goldwing to the Rally. Don Schroeder took 1 st place in the motion light show held Saturday night. Gail Miller LUCKY won 2 nd place in the 50/50 on Friday and 1 st place, in the 50/50 on Saturday IMAGINE THAT!!! The Chapter won a $50.00 award for an ice cream run for having the most canned goods donated. Monday morning, after the Rally, Al, Larry More and Jim loaded Al s pickup truck and delivered the food to the Salvation Army. 3
Carol won the Logo Contest for the 2019 Cabin Fever. The Rally was a lot of work for Chapter B and, also, a lot of fun. Since there were a lot of vendors, we hope all the vendors had a good time and good sales. We do want to thank Sierra Electronics for attending; they were welcomed by all who attended. DISTRICT EDUCATOR OHIO - GWRRA BILL AND PAT STILES operating a motorcycle. I ve written a lot of articles for my chapter, V-2, but this will be the first for another chapter s newsletter. This will be the first thing that we will do as the new District Educators. As the time goes by my articles will be about motorcycle safety, the levels programs and other things that are relevant to the safety of Be Ready: mind, body, and bike. Motorcycle Safety Tips There are three ways riders should ready themselves for a ride. First, there is mental readiness. Before taking your bike out, your mind should be clear and drug and alcohol free to focus on the ride you have ahead of you. Second, you must be physically prepared. Protective gear is a must in protecting your body while riding a motorcycle. Protective gear includes: a good fitting helmet, gloves, eye protection, jacket, long pants, and sturdy boots or shoes. Note that reflective or bright colored protective gear will help you stand out in traffic. Physical fitness will help your riding in countless ways including, comfort on longer rides and better and sharper reflexes. Also, try some stretching exercises before you ride. Third, you must check the condition of your bike. This includes fixing the parts that break, as well as regular maintenance, such as: regular oil changes, properly adjusted controls, a properly adjusted chain and suspension, good tires, working turn signals, and checking of tire pressure. A quick walk around the bike before riding could point out leaks, loose bolts, tire problems, or anything else out of place Know where you are. Being aware of what is in your immediate space cushion will always help you guide your ride safely. Failure to be aware of your position in relation to those around you can cause dire consequences when faced with the need to make a quick lane change. Pay special attention to what's in front of you, especially oncoming traffic. It's easy to disregard traffic traveling in the opposite direction but that is where the greatest threat lies. 5
Use Your Head to Look Where You re Going. This may sound slightly remedial, but it is an under-appreciated habit of a skilled rider. As you round a turn, keep your head and eyes up, looking through the corner as far as you safely can, at least three to four seconds ahead. (If you can't see that far ahead, you need to slow down until you CAN see three to four seconds ahead). When your line of sight or path of travel becomes restricted, reduce your speed and use great care. Simply put, if you can't see, slow down. Rain and fog are examples of situations where less speed = more reaction time = safer riding. Curvy forest and mountain roads sightlines are shorter; you need to reduce your speed to be prepared for surprises like deer or big rocks. Before proceeding through any intersection, check left, check front, check right, then check left again. As you enter an intersection, whether turning or proceeding through, you need to know what your hazards are and where they can come from. The highest priority is to check your left. Why left? The left is the highest priority because that is the lane of traffic you first cross and therefore would be the first to impact you. After the left you continue to check the intersection in a clockwise pattern, and then check left again. Always check the left twice. Check your rearview mirror before you slow your speed. Too often, what is out of sight is out of mind. As you slow down for any turn or a stop, you need to be aware of what is happening behind you. Now you begin braking or rolling off the throttle, you need to check your mirrors. (Your attention up to this point has been primarily in front of you, so once you start braking, you are already minimizing any hazards in that direction). This is part of your general awareness of what is happening in your surroundings on the road. The habit to acquire is to check your mirrors every five to seven seconds, and any time you roll off the throttle. Combine that with gentle application of both brakes and rarely will a stop be anything more than routine Keep a 2-4 second following distance. When traveling on a highway, the minimum distance to keep between you and the vehicle in front of you is 2 seconds, but that is the bare minimum. Keep in mind two seconds is the distance needed on clear sunny days. At night or during inclement weather you need to increase your safety margin to four to eight seconds. You should maintain these cushions as best as possible including the time you find yourself riding in traffic or with a group of motorcycles. To figure your distance correctly pick a point on the road, like a sign or a seam in the pavement, watch the vehicle ahead of you pass it and count the seconds it takes you to reach that point. The number of seconds you count is your following distance Have a great day and be safe Bill & Pat Stiles District Educators 6
Robert G & Angela Williams Hello Fellow Riders I announced that I was stepping down as of June 30 th 2018 at the Buckeye Rally. This will be my last newsletter as your District Educator. We welcome our New District Educator Bill Stiles out of OH-V2. Here is the status of the Ohio Rider Courses in Ohio for 2018: 7 ARC/TRC Classes held at 4 different locations across Ohio. 3 ARC Classes with 32 Riders and 9 Co-Riders 4 TRC Classes with 37 Riders and 16 Co-Riders At the Buckeye Rally we had 30 members take the Road Captains Course Over the course of the year we have had 45 members take the Co-Rider Course. Earlier this year we had 9 MFA CPR/FA/AED classes with a total of 118 participants. These are just the highlights of the year. This year will be considered by ALL a successful Rider Education Year. 9 \2018 COUPLE OF THE YEAR DON SCHROEDER & DEB PARKS Hello folks. Wow, WOW, WOW. What a FUNTASTIC month of June that we have had. Deb and I were able to go with 18 other people and ride down to Marietta to acquire the traveling plaque so that we could have it here in Mansfield for Buckeye State Rally. We all enjoyed the time spent traveling and enjoying each other s companionship and stories told. Deb and I were tail for the Marietta ride. (Picture) Deb and I had previous plans and were unable to attend the June monthly meeting. We always enjoy the monthly meeting. What great weather we had for the Rally also. Deb and I were able to participate in the ride on Friday and Saturday down to Mohican either leading or tailing. Mike Finley did a great job leading on Saturday, and road down to Mohican. Mike Border led the group on Friday. All had a great time; they appreciated seeing some of Richland County s fine motorcycle roads. This is a picture of the Saturday group that seeing some of Richland County s fine motorcycle roads. This is a picture of the Saturday group that We were able to spend some quality time with those that camped at the Buckeye Rally. Thank you for sharing your suppers and campfires with Deb and I. Boy did our group ever do well at the Rally. Jim Culler took first place in the 1100 and 1800 class, and Jerry Eldridge took first place in the 1500 class. Don Schroeder took first place in the motion light show that was held Saturday evening. And how about the CAMP SITE. Everyone helped pitch in a hand for the great job on putting together the 50 s Drive-In theater scene. Al and Cathy sure put it over the top with the ticket booth and theater sign eh. And our own Carol Culler won first place for next year s Cabin Fever design. Kudos to Carol also. Well, don t want to make this too long. Best get this wrapped up and sent to Carol. See you all soon. This Chapter is like a big family and we re blessed to be part of it. Live Life, Stay safe, Deb and Don 9
NEWSLETTER EDITORS JIM AND CAROL CULLER Hello Everyone! Well, we had a great time at the Buckeye Rally. It was fun, preparing the decorations, food at the campsite and great company. As always, it was great to see Frank and Alice there; wouldn t be the same without them. Next year it will be held in Wooster, so if you didn t go this year, plan on it. It is always a good time. It was really great that Rob and Lucy came to the last meeting and got to be in the Chapter B Picture. When we joined in 1988, we wondered whether or not we would even like to ride with a group or really even enjoy being in a Chapter. Well, I guess we really enjoy it, as it is 30 years later and we enjoy it as much today as we did then. We remember Frank and Alice called us, after we attended our first meeting, and asked if we wanted to occupy a room in Cherokee, North Carolina (Wings Over the Smokies) that had opened up. We hesitated, then agreed. That was such a great time, that, here we are; just can t get rid of us. We really don t know if other Chapter Members are as close as ours, but, we do know that belonging to Chapter B is like having a whole other family. There hasn t been a time that we have regretted getting to know all the wonderful members that have made up our Chapter over the years. As far as we are concerned, you are all the best. They say life is enriched by who you have met during a lifetime; so we want to thank each and every one of you for being a part of our life and making it a richer one. God Bless you all, and never change, as you are great just the way you are. With the Buckeye Rally over, we are now looking forward to riding to Sevierville, Tennesee in August that Susan and Rich have been kind enough to arrange. A BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR A JOB WELL DONE FOR THE BUCKEYE RALLY AND TO THE LEADERSHIP AND ENTHUSIAM OF AL AND CATHY; IT WAS APPRECIATED. SEE YOU SOON, JIM AND CAROL 10

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT BONNIE LANTZ Rain, rain, rain, that seems to be all there is lately. I try to pick the correct days to do my outside work, sometimes it works out. The weather was good for the Buckeye Rally, that was good. It was good to see a lot of my friends. I have about all of my house and yardwork caught up, my garden is in and trying to survive the wild critters running through it. This is all of the news that I have. I hope that everybody is feeling fine and in good spirits. Bonnie A LITTLE HUMOR (Write the answers down and bring to the meeting. If all are correct your answers will be placed in a drawing) What travels around the world but stays in one spot? What occurs once in a minute, twice in a moment and never in one thousand years? What has 4 eyes but can t see? If I have it, I don t share it. If I share it, I don t have it. What is it? What can you catch but not throw? A house has 4 walls. All of the walls are facing south, and a bear is circling the house. What color would the bear be? What is at the end of a rainbow? A man leaves home and turns left three times, only to return home facing two men wearing masks. Who are those two men? If I drink, I die. If I eat, I am fine. What am I? 13
