CHAPTER DIRECTORS JOE & JACKIE WOODMANSEE September 2014 is past and now October is upon us. As we all know it is cooling down outside sooner than we would like because there is still more fun to be had. October 11 and 12 was our Fall Leaf Ride to Presque Isle in Erie PA and while the weather was a little cool we saw lots of fall colors and had a great weekend. After the Leaf Ride we have our gathering on October 19 and Chapter B Halloween Party on October 25. October 26 we will have Chapter B Officer meeting to layout next year s Ride Schedule. If you have an idea for next year whether it's a place to ride to or an event that we can do as a chapter we welcome all suggestions. I have already heard a few but we would like to hear more. Also, we will have apple butter for sale and we need to all make a strong effort to sell all that was made. Jackie and I want to thank everyone who helped make apple butter last weekend. You did a fine job as always. Hello Fellow Riders: Joe and Jackie Chapter B Directors "B" Part of the Journey ASS T CHAPTER DIRECTORS Randy & Linda Porter What a busy time we have been having...rides here, there and everywhere. We hope that you have been on one of the rides. This weekend we are gathering to make apple butter and apple sauce. What a great time this is. Hope you can come stir, eat, laugh, eat, stir and laugh some more! Then our leaf ride to PA...going thru the covered bridges in Ashtabula and seeing God's hand in the beauty of the land. What a great weekend it should be...many are going hope you are one of them. If you can't go, look for great pictures from those who will be riding. Well, as you know from the calendar, Randy and I are going to be celebrating our 70 th birthday the first part of October. We can't imagine that we have obtained this milestone. When looking back on our lives, I see that we have accomplished much seen much met many, many friends met celebrities eaten much rode much We have great kids and grandchildren and just in general have much to be thankful for. To top it off, this is only a milestone and there are still many life adventures ahead of us. Thank you all for making our journey so exciting. Until we see you around the horn, ride safely and have fun! Ride safely...enjoy the time and have fun. Linda and Randy ACD's 2
CHAPTER MOTORIST AWARENESS Randy & Linda Porter Curves, Rain, Leaves As I was driving this week the rain came down which in turn brought the leaves down off the trees. As I was turning the many corners of Holmes County my front tires started to slide on those newly fallen leaves. Many things came in play to make this happen. First was speed, second was smooth tires, and of course the newly fallen rain on payment that had not had rain for a while, which leaves tar on of the top of the highway. As the highway warms up the rubber comes off the tires and builds up on the curves more than on the straight-a-ways. So the tar is coming out of the highway and the rubber off the tires which when water is added to that mix it becomes very slippery. Add leaves on top of that mix, and now you know why my tires were slipping. I was driving a small car, but on a motorcycle it would be much worse Please slow down and watch for a possible slippery area. Our leaf ride is coming up and it is more fun to see the leaves on the trees than on a curve in the highway. YOUR BIG OPPORTUNITY MAY BE RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE NOW!!!!! Motorist Awareness & Story Teller, Randy and Linda Hi Everyone: NEWSLETTER EDITORS JIM & CAROL CULLER The last days of September and October 1 st and 2 nd we had some beautiful riding weather. October 3 rd, however, it started to change. That was a day one of Chapter B s Apple Butter making was going on. It was still warm with off and on rain... The Apple Butter event went well, with several cutting and cooking the apples to get ready for the big day on Saturday. Saturday is when the weather really changed. Thanks to Susan Kennedy for these pictures!! 3
Thanks to Susan Kennedy For these pictures. There were some sun, clouds, rain, sleet and even some snow!!! Jim got there about 9:30 am (sorry I could not make it) and there were already three kettles on the fire. They kept the kettles cooking till after 4 pm with someone stirring all the time. Thanks to everyone who helped. It is a big job making the apple butter and everyone who helped is appreciated. A BIG SPECIAL THANKS to Larry and Debbe for hosting the event at their home. Thanks to Rich Faeth, Jerry Eldridge and anyone else for their contribution of necessary equipment for making it possible; Mike McAvoy for cooking the pork and Jerry McAvoy for all the time he spent getting the apples and helping get the event on a roll. Without Jerry s hard work in getting the apples, using all necessary equipment and his expertise and countless hours he put in, the Apple Event would not have happened. ANOTHER LITTLE QUIZ!!! SEE BELOW In this Newsletter I placed 9 things in various areas that do not belong. Find them and write them down as to the location. If you have them all written down (and correct) you will be put in a drawing at our meeting on Sunday. Then sign your name. Must come to the meeting with them already written down. I will ask for them at the meeting. SENIOR CHAPTER EDUCATORS TED & JOYCE STRUTZ You ve seen them on the roads driving their cars, trucks, and SUVs. Talking on the phone, eating, making a grocery list, checking their Palm Pilot, reading their GPS, yelling at the kids, and maybe all of the above! How much of their attention is left for driving? I call this their Bubble of Awareness how large is the area that they are aware of and paying attention to? Maybe just to their front bumper Now, how about us? How big is OUR Bubble of Awareness? We have distractions, too. Two-way radios, keeping an 4
eye on the other riders in the group behind us, the argument we just had with the boss/spouse/friend/etc., the distracting effects of heat, cold, wind, bugs, debris, etc. How much of OUR attention is being spent on the business of riding? Research has shown that in an emergency situation, we have between 2 and 3 seconds to react before something bad happens. The problem is that it takes about 3 seconds to judge, decide what to do, and then take that action. Now, I m not a math whiz, but that seems like a problem to me What makes the difference is what happens during the 5-10 seconds BEFORE the emergency situation. If we can train our Bubble of Awareness to extend to 20 seconds ahead of where we are now, we can start to make some predictions and take actions that reduce our risk: Truck with uncovered load predict debris back off and be ready to slow/swerve/stop. Driver up ahead going slowly and looking side to side predict they are looking for an address and may turn suddenly back off and don t pass (they may turn left when you are trying to pass!) a tighter turn slow and select a lane position that allows you to see farthest around the turn. There are dozens and maybe hundreds more. The trick is for us to get our eyes up and look well ahead. Identify those potential hazards, make predictions, and take action early. The best way to handle an emergency situation is to identify it and take action BEFORE it becomes an Road curves out of sight predict that beyond the bend is debris, a stalled car, deer, and/or Emergency. Enjoy the summer riding be alert, ride within your limits, and increase your Bubble Awareness. Ride smart...ride safe Ted & Joyce SEPTEMBER REPORT Meeting Attendance 69 Level I 27 Other Seminar Activity 0 14 Seminar by Newsletter 125 Level III 5 Seminar at Meeting 69 Level IV 3 MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT DEBBE STEINHILBER For those of you who didn't attend the Region D rally in Kendallville, Indiana you missed a good time. The first day of the rally started out at Bob Evans in Bucyrus where Larry and I had breakfast with Charlie & Nancy Lantz, Joe&Rett Worrick (friends of ours from Pennsylvania, and Mike Finley. We piled on the clothes and headed for Kendallville. Because Kendallville had four inches of rain the night before, the fair board opened a huge cattle barn and allowed campers to set up inside. Since we had never camped inside a building before, we decided to give it a try and picked a few spots in the center section. The barn helped keep the cold wind away and was close to the 5
restrooms and vendors. Later that night we joined about 110 people other members and rode to Antwerp, Ohio for a buffet meal at Das Essenhaus. Friday morning started off with all of us picking our numbers for the cow patty bingo followed by a Chinese auction for women. Unfortunately the cow did not do its "duty" on any of our numbers. Later that afternoon Larry and I were recruited to inspect and classify bikes for the bike and light show before heading off to a great meal of ham & bean soup, cornbread, watermelon, an ear of corn, brownies and a drink. It was one of the best meals we have had at a rally in a long time. We were even able to go back for seconds! We skipped the block party downtown due to the cold and opted to take our lawn chairs and snacks down to Claude & Dee Mitchell's camper where we watched the newest Tom Cruise movie on a big screen. It rained later that night and we were glad we were in the barn. Saturday Alice Schauss and I spent most of the afternoon helping with the bike & light shows so we missed the chicken chunking, skillet toss, tractor pulls and the horse drawn wagon rides. Larry, Mike Finley and Joe Worrick won first place in their divisions in the bike show and Joe and Mike won first place in their divisions in the light show. After the light parade, we all headed back down to Mitchell's camper for the newest Captain America movie. A big thank you to the Region D team for a great time APPLE BUTTER: Due to increased costs in the apples and jars, we have raised the price on the apple butter to $5 per pint and $3 for the half pints. We determined we could not make any money on the applesauce due to the increased costs so we do not have any applesauce for sale. We will be bringing the apple butter to the next meeting and would like an idea as to how much to bring. Please let me know how much each of you would like to have. Larry & Debbe SUNSHINE LADY PHYLLIS KERR Happy Fall to everyone. Hope you are all enjoying all the nice riding days we are having; the colors are beautiful. We enjoyed a beautiful ride after Chapter V's teddy bear ride. Some of us went to The Jolly Rogers. Nice ride, great company, all around fantastic day. On the sick list we need to remember and keep in our prayers: Judy Norris who had a biopsy and will be having surgery on October 31st. Helen Prosser who was in the hospital. Amy Jones will have the battery replaced in her pacemaker. Bob Blackford, his mother Janet Blackford passed away on Friday, October 10 th. Thanks to everyone who was in attendance at the funeral home to show their respects. Send cards to: Bob Blackford, 417 Clymer St., Galion, Ohio If you happen to see Charlene from Chapter I, ask her about her pole dancing; should be real interesting. Happy Birthday to those with October birthdays. See calendar for those birthdays. Happy October to everyone, 6 Phyllis

Dan & Phyllis those open roads with friends. DINNER RIDE COORDINATORS Al & CATHY NIGHSWANDER There is hardly anything better than gliding down the back roads of Ohio in autumn. We have two great dinner rides for October and it will be terrible if we have to travel cooped up in a car! During October we want to enjoy the beautiful fall colors and the sun dancing through the trees. We want to smell the burning leaves, the freshly harvested crops, all of nature that is preparing for colder weather. We might be tempted to bring a camera but the best pictures will be the ones in our heads and our hearts as we travel On October 8 th, the dinner ride is to the Der Dutchman at 720 State Route 97, Bellville, Ohio. On October 23 rd, the dinner ride is to the Cranberry Hills Golf Course at 5965 St RT 103, New Washington, Ohio. Hopefully, the weather will be great and on the motorcycles we will be! For October, we will continue to meet at the Richland Mall at 5 to ride together to the restaurant. Of course, you can just meet the group at the eatery at 6 P.M. too! Be safe and have fun! Ride safe. Ride for the fun of it, Al and Cathy 7
The Chapter B Group at Wings over the Smokies! Looks like the weather was fantastic.
