2 Hi all, How is everybody doing? Good I hope. Well last Saturday, the 8th, we went on our leaf ride lead by Cupcake and rear ended by Gary. They both did an outstanding job. The only trouble we had was the lack of color. We headed South toward Urbana and most of the trees were still green. We had a great ride down, with a stop at Ohio Caverns. At the airport we ate at the cafe, a great place to eat. Then we went to the Museum there, great place, and a nice ride back. We missed the ride to Henry Street Station, hope it was well attended. Upcoming: The Halloween party is at our place on the 22nd, The 27th we will be going to the Old 30 BBQ in Bucyrus, November 5th is the Road Kill Stew put on by chapter I, November 11th is the fish fry, and last but not least we are going to the Big City Burger. Bring you're reservation form for the Christmas party by the November gathering. Also we will be collecting non perishable items for Associated Charities. Bring your donations to the November gathering or the Christmas Party. Well that s all I can remember. Your CD's Jim & Donna Hello Everyone, The days are getting much shorter and we have had our first frost. The weather has been nice enough though for us to still get out and ride. We had a good turnout for the leaf ride even though the leaves had not gotten to peak change yet. Thank you Gary and Shirley you did an outstanding job with this ride. Our chapter Christmas party is fast approaching. Make sure you get your reservations and money turned in by the November gathering for this event. Please feel free to bring a door prize for the Christmas party, the Chapter will be providing some door prizes as well. Just a reminder that we will be accepting non perishable food items at the November gathering and at the Christmas Party for Ashland County Associated Charities. Please keep your ride schedules handy so you do not miss out on any events that are scheduled. Till next month. We will see you down the road. ACD s, Wayne & Debra Wolf HIGH MILEAGE AWARD If you are interested in competing for the high mileage award, get your mileage for the year turned in to Jim Lust by the November Gathering. The award will be presented at the Christmas Party. (2) HIDDEN NUMBER The hidden number was Carl Crider. It was on page 3 of the September Newsletter in the 7th paragraph as the Ducati number. Carl found his number and enjoyed a free meal. Look closely guys. Yours could be in this issue.
3 Motorcycling didn t just happen overnight. From the American Motorcyclist Association In fact, people have been building, riding and otherwise having fun on two-wheeled vehicles with engines since In that time, plenty of things have made our favorite sport great, from the truly groundbreaking machines that started it all to humbler stuff like the bungee cord and the plastic garbage bag. Frankly, it s both ends of the spectrum that make motorcycling what it is. 12 THINGS THAT STARTED IT ALL The invention of the wheel (about 5,000 BC in Mesopotamia): After that, we only needed to wait a mere 6,876 years for Nicolaus Otto to invent the internal-combustion engine. The 1885 Daimler einspur : Sure it had training wheels, and yes, it was a test bed for engines, not a true motorcycle. But it put two wheels in line and an engine between them, with a rider on top. The 1894 Hildebrand and Wolfmuller: A 1,488cc, liquid-cooled twin that was the world s first mass-produced motorcycle. Motorcycle clubs: Many of the earliest grew out of existing bicycle clubs, bringing together wheelmen of all kinds. The Federation of American Motorcyclists: The first national motorcycle association, and the precursor to the AMA, was founded in The Motorcycle & Allied Trades Association: The industry trade group, founded in 1916, that evolved into the Motorcycle Industry Council. The M&ATA rider division: A special section of the industry group designed to represent motorcycle enthusiasts. In 1924, it became a separate organization known as the American Motorcycle Association. Rider education: It s available to riders in nearly all 50 states today, but it started with the training programs created for police motor patrols and Army dispatch riders. Hot-rodding: Thanks to the Depression and the need for motorcyclists to make do with what they had, owner modifications become commonplace, and customizing was born. AMA News: This newsletter, which went to AMA members serving in the military around the world during World War II, grew into American Motorcyclist magazine, the journal of the AMA. The British invasion: With major American motorcycle manufacturers dwindling to just two by the 1950s, Triumph, BSA, Matchless, Royal Enfield and more brought lightweight performance bikes to the U.S. market. The Japanese invasion: A decade later, it was Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki coming to America with even lighter, higher performance machines. Shirley Cupcake & Gary Helbert, Rider ED. We would like to give a special Thank You to both Larry Franks for putting new tires on our bike s and Stimey for helping me learn to use my GPS before we left for Wing Ding. Both gave us peace of mind while on the road. Cupcake & Gary (3)
4 FOR THE LONG DISTANCE RIDER Great news for the Gold Wing riders that travel a lot and tire of eating restaurant food. A new product from Adventure Innovations has the answer to your problem. Called the EZ Oven, it fits in the right saddlebag of your Wing and has about 175 cubic inches of capacity, which should be enough space to prepare a meal for two. By replacing your right muffler with one of their design that has two ports on top. One that directs the hot exhaust gasses up into a series of tubes in the oven and the other that directs the flow back into the muffler and out the exhaust. When not in use a solenoid valve shuts off the bypass and the exhaust goes through the muffler in the usual manner. The reason for using the right saddlebag is that the unit can be easily accessed on the side stand or center stand. The oven unit itself is heavily insulated so as not to melt the fiberglass saddlebag. When preparing food, open the saddlebag lid, open the oven lid, and place the food you want to heat on one of the three removable racks. Let s say the food requires you to heat it at 300 degrees for 10 minutes. Simply enter that information in to the on board computer mounted on the oven door and it will automatically calculate how many miles, at a given speed, it will take to cook your food. They include a flat plate that fits inside the saddlebag lid that can be used as a preparation table and is easily removed for cleaning. Having used a prototype of this unit on a recent trip I can tell you it worked very well and the food was cooked to perfection. I would suggest you opt for the optional timer alarm system, that works through your intercom. so you don t overcook your food, and also, the handle bar mounted hold feature that stops the cooking process and keeps the food warm until you reach an area where you can safely pull over and enjoy your meal. They are now working on a model for trikes that will use a portion of the trunk space. To purchase this item them at - Eatandgo.com Hi All, We had a great turn out or our Teddy bear Ride. A big thank you to our neighboring chapters and everyone that came. The hospital is very appreciative of our efforts and I m sure it puts a smile on the kids faces when they receive one the stuffed animals. The leaf ride was a success and the 10 members that were able to go had a nice ride and visited some neat places. We sure hated to miss it, but were unable to go because we were on our way to Myrtle Beach for our annual golfing trip. The Helbert s always set up great rides for the chapter and we really appreciate their efforts. The riding season is winding down but Mother Nature is still being kind to us this year, so maybe we can get a few more miles on our Wings. Still good things to come this year with the Christmas Party and other events so keep your ride schedule handy. 5 Sorry we have not been attending many events. We are having a busy fall with grandchildren playing football and soccer. We took a two week ride to the Ozarks - great riding in northwestern part of the state - mountains and curves with scenery that was beautiful. We were a little early for full fall colors but saw colors in Tennessee on the way home. Hopefully we will attend the Halloween party and will see everyone there. I remember Gary Helbert hosted the Halloween party one year and it was snowing. NOT READY FOR THAT! Larry and Norma Hello Everyone, The days are sure flying by it is hard to believe that this year is almost over. I sure hope that all of you were able to get out and get some great rides that will make awesome memories to carry you through till the next riding season. I know that in last month s newsletter I said that my internet issues had been solved. I truly wish that was so as I am still having issues. I tried to get on the web site yesterday and got knocked off the internet three times, so I just gave up. I am getting my s now and can send some through at times. I had contacted my internet provider about the issues I was having and they were supposed to come and fix them. The day they were to be here I contacted them and asked when to expect them. I was told they did not have a work order and that it would be two weeks before they could come out and fix my internet issues. Needless to say I am still waiting for them to come out and fix the problem. I am currently looking into my other options at this time. Please check your membership cards and renew when needed. Until next month be safe and enjoy this beautiful fall weather.. MEC/Webmaster, Debra Wolf (5)
