It is going to be a busy time for us. We will be in three states in three weeks! First up is the Labor Day weekend ride to the New River Gorge in Beckley, West Virginia with 31 of our Chapter B family members for some good riding and maybe some white water rafting or zip lining. Ten days later it's off to the Region D rally in Coldwater, Michigan where the theme will be Monster Mash. We'll be camping so hopefully it won't get too cold at night. We'll head home from there on Sunday the 18th then head to Fletcher, NC two days later for Wings Over the Smokies with about 20 other Chapter B members. This will be our first time to Wings and we are looking forward to it. The following weekend it will be off to McAvoys for a weekend of camping, cookouts and apple butter making. We've never made apple butter before but know it will be a fun weekend with all our friends. The next weekend will be our leaf ride to Washington, Pennsylvania to see some covered bridges, do a little shopping and maybe a little gambling. Whew! We're tired already just thinking about it. Before you know it, October 31 will be here and our three year term as your Chapter Directors will be over. Where has the time gone?

2 ASS T CHAPTER DIRECTORS JOE & JACKIE Wow, another month has come and gone. August was filled with events. I would like to thank everyone for supporting Chapter B Progressive Dinner. Not only was it fun but we travelled a good distance to complete the meal. Thanks to Randy and Linda Porter, Jerry and Rita Eldridge, Jerry and Sue McAvoy and Fred and Dodie Brickley for hosting the event and thank you to everyone for helping them host. It was another successful dinner. Left: Some Chapter B Members at Jerry and Sue McAvoys for the Main Course. Chapter B Members winding up the Progressive Dinner at Fred and Dodie Brickley. some of us still got wet (especially coming Chapter B had their Teddy Bear ride after the last meeting and even though our own Dick Goddard (Don Smith) said the rain would go around us, I think back from LaGrange). August 27 some of us met with 10 members of Chapter C-3. They scheduled a ride to Granny s Restaurant and called Deb to see if some of Chapter B could meet them and take a short ride. 8 members from Chapter B had dinner with them and enjoyed discussing various chapter events. C-3 is a great group of people that we should plan to visit soon. Next ride is the Labor Day weekend ride to West Virginia. We are looking forward to it. To the left is a picture of the C-3 Members whom we met at Granny s in Galion. Remember, Chapter B's success is dependent on all members helping plan, schedule and participate in Chapter events and GWRRA functions. Ride Safe and Enjoy Joe and Jackie - 2 -

4 FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY & KNOWLEDGE SENIOR CHAPTER EDUCATORS TED & JOYCE STRUTZ Have you ever found yourself unexpectedly in a situation that leaves few options? Probably just about everyone has at one time or another. Imagine you are out on a relaxing and enjoyable ride that suddenly turns into a frightening panic situation because something caught you off guard. Now you have to rely on instinct and advanced riding skills. These types of situations can really unnerve a rider. The good news is that these situations are almost always avoidable. Rider education can give us the skills that keep us out of trouble when a bad situation does arise. Wouldn t it be nice if we didn t need to worry about the advanced riding skills to stay out of trouble? Let s take another route on rider education to save lives. Maybe we should concentrate on developing skills that keep us out of trouble in the first place. Look at ways we can eliminate surprises and stay out of trouble. People say if you look for trouble you will probably find it. Believe it or not, when you are on the bike that is a good thing. If you find the trouble you can avoid it. The trick is to keep your mind in the ride. Always look ahead and scan for trouble that may arise. Expand your view by looking across the landscape. Actively search for side roads, entrance ramps, animals, farm machinery, or anything else that can spell trouble. Always scan forward and backward for hints of activity and warning signs of potential threats. Trouble can come from all directions. BE AWARE!! Never ignore warnings signs. Give them all a second thought. Sometimes you will need to trust your intuition. It is better to slow unnecessarily than to maintain speed directly into a bad situation. We all have the ability to turn potentially dangerous situations into non-events. Just focus on the need to stay out of trouble rather than relying on the skills to get out of trouble. 5 NEWSLETTER EDITOR JIM & CAROL CULLER It seems like Labor Day was an official season change. Hot summer day on Saturday and Sunday, wet and cooler on Monday. We attended the Hogs for Dogs Humane Society Event in Bucyrus. We had a good turnout from Chapter B, which paid off for some. Chapter B had a total of 12 bikes. Lucy Kennedy won the grand prize which was a basket (just loaded) with great Harvey Davidson articles such as: leather Harley Vest, Leather Harley Hat, Harley Tee Shirt, Harley Davidson Blanket, Harley Davidson License Plate Holder, plus other misc. items. We wanted Lucy to put the vest on, but she declined; Ted Strutz and Cathy Nighswander won a (large bag of birdseed each); Lon Leapley won a Gift Bag that had misc. items plus a $20 gift certificate to the Oak Café; Jerry McAvoy won two different kinds of bike cleaner and two gift certificates to Baker s Pizza in Bucyrus, and Debbe Steinhilber won a gift bag with a $25.00 gift. They had setup a nice ride and our Chapter had our pictures taken with one of the dogs the Humane Society had there for someone to adopt. They did a very good job with the ride layout, the free tee shirts for everyone who signed in, and the pork dinner. If they have it again next year, please consider going as I know we will. Well, the weekend to Beckley, West Virginia turned out to be a great success even though we had rain and were rained on all the way home. Paul & Julie Hickman, Doug & Deb Friebel and Rich Faeth and Susan Kennedy went white water rafting and to the coal mine. They even floated in the 77 degrees water a few times on the trip. Jerry Eldridge and Ron Scheid went to the coal mine and then went riding the southern back roads of the county. Eric & Cheryl Steinhilber, Debbe & Larry Steinhilber, Charlie & Phyllis Barnette, Don & Kathy Smith, and Raymond & Ritchel Sipe went to the Hawkes Nest State Then they rode the tram down to the dock and got on a 15 person jet boat that took them down the river to the New River Gorge bridge where the boat stopped so we they could get some pictures. They rode the tram back up and went to a little restaurant down the road where two sides of the restaurant were open and they listened to their live entertainment before traveling down some neat back roads. Raymond & Ritchel left them after the boat ride to go zip-lining but it was cancelled due to the weather. They ended up riding horses later that night in the rain. Hobo and his son went to see the coal mine then ate at the lodge before getting on the boat but their trip was cut short when it started raining. Now, our group lead by Joe Woodmansee, (the very conservative group-as always),consisting of Joe & Jackie Woodmansee, Dan & Phyllis Kerr, Dale & Jackie Crowl, Jerry & Sue McAvoy and Jim and I went on a very scenic, casual afternoon ride. Just taking it easy and enjoying the view and the area. Of course, at night we got together and played the notorious dice game. There was something in that area for everyone to do. Really was beautiful riding, great restaurants within walking distance, and definitely great company. There definitely needs to be another trip scheduled there in the future. Like I said, we got rained on from the time we left the hotel at 8 a.m. on Monday morning to the time we got home that night. There were members who wanted to travel on Route 77 going home and the group we were in, led by Joe Woodmansee, went another route which was laid out very well. If it had not been raining, it would have been just beautiful. And, amazingly enough, would have gotten us home about an hour after the other group had we not had some difficulty. The rain really made it an extra-long ride home for us all. Especially Jerry McAvoy who laid his bike down and had to go to the hospital to be checked out and have a few stiches put in - 5 -

6 his upper lip. He sure was a trooper. His bike was not hurt and he ended up being OK, except for the sore lip. When they dismissed him, he rode his bike all the way home. You could tell by the end of the day that his hip, where he had his cell phone in his pocket, was beginning to hurt. However, he sure was a trooper. We all were very glad to hear that he was ok and not seriously hurt. It s a terrible sight to see one of your friends laying on the road and his Goldwing on its side. Sue was really upset and calmed down a lot by the time we left the hospital. They are very special people as members of Chapter B and personal friends. Something like that makes you aware of how close you are to people and how much they mean to you. We found, at the time of the accident, that we did not have enough items in our Safety Kits. We needed more gauze then we had, etc. So, before you ride again, please check your Safety Kits and make sure there is enough gauze if you would ever need it. If not, buy a roll and place it in your kit. SEE YOU SOON, SUNSHINE LADY SUE MCAVOY Whew, what a busy month! And September is going to be just as busy, if not busier. I've always heard busy hands keep you out of trouble. We'll see! Labor Day weekend ride, meeting, Region D rally, Wings Over Smokies, apple butter making. Something for everyone and everyone for something! Plan to do as much as you can. You know we always have a great time when we get together no matter what we're doing. For those of you who want this, here is the recipe! Macaroni and Cheese 2 cups elbow macaroni - place in 6 quarts of boiling water. Sauce: 1 3 oz. bottle grated American cheese oz. can evaporated milk 2-3 Tbsp. cornstarch 12 oz. Water 1/4 lb. butter or margarine. Bring 6 quarts to a boil; add a little salt and macaroni. Bring water to a boil again, cover pan and remove from heat. Let stand for minutes. Meanwhile, in saucepan or skillet: Melt the butter. Pour in milk. Fill can with water. Pour 1/2 in pan. The other 1/2 add the cornstarch, but do not add yet. Add the cheese to butter and milk and using a whisk blend until cheese is dissolved. Heat until it just starts to boil. Stir the cornstarch into remaining water in can. Mix well. Add to cheese sauce, stirring constantly until sauce thickens. Drain macaroni and put back into pan. Pour sauce over macaroni, mix well. Pour into baking dish and bake for 30 minutes on 350 Degrees or pour into crockpot. If you are making ahead, refrigerate before baking. This can be made a day ahead. Anyway, bake and enjoy!
