Let s hope she flips those two pages back and we end up with fall this winter! Falling temps, shorter days and risk of inclement weather means we plan rides with closer destinations. That doesn t always mean the ride will be short. Often we get cooperation from the weather, so the route to a destination 10 miles down the trail may actually take 50, 60, 90 miles to get there. We can always hope. And since we re headed into that time of year it s a good time to remind you that if you have any questions about what is going on you can call the Chapter s HOGLINE at (405) Remember: Rain or shine we dine; Ice or snow we don t go. Director s Scratch...and anything else that comes to mind by David Wiist, Director It s State Rally time in Oklahoma! With October opening the fall doors, it s time to ride to Ponca City, OK for the annual Oklahoma State H.O.G. Rally. On October 8th thru 11th, all H.O.G. members should at least take the short ride north and support what our Harley Owners Group provides at the local level. Just spending the day in Ponca Wence Park, the rally site, shows your loyalty and support to the largest organized riding group in the world. And besides the support thing, you get to hang with a few hundred of your fellow Harley enthusiasts and enjoy the riding around North Central Oklahoma. If you want to spend more than the day, the City of Ponca City has several good hotels and the rally site promotes RV and camping spots. The Oklahoma State Rally may not be the largest of the state rallies in the USA with thousands in attendance at other locations, but they are by far one of the most laid back & well organized events, with good music, food, vendors, events, rides, and hard working volunteers. The 800 to 1000 that do attend have one of the most memorable rallies by just taking in all the sights, sounds, rides, and friendly Oklahoma H.O.G. people. The last quarter of the year has some things new and some things not so new. We re going to continue testing our culinary pallets (this time German and of course, BBQ), head down the iron rails (this time to ole San Antone), make an attempt at a giant circle by attempting another Right Turns Only Ride, and a return to Red Rock Canyon for the annual Chapter picnic. We also have the Christmas party booked as well. Details on the immediate future Friday, Oct. 2-Royal Bavaria (6:30/7 FTHD) This is our last Friday night ride of the year, so saddle up and try something different. Thur.-Sat., Oct Oklahoma State HOG Rally in Ponca City. While not a chapter event, you are encouraged to attend the this year s rally. There will be Pre-registration has already passed, but it is not too late to join the Party in Ponca. You can show up just about any time during the 3- day event, and with a small fee, enjoy every part of the 2009 State Rally that is available. If we could just get half of our H.O.G. members from each dealer-sponsored chapter in our state to attend our own Oklahoma Rally, we would have accomplished what hasn t ever been done in Oklahoma. I am not saying let s break attendance records right here in the In Memoriam On September 8, Harold Thompson passed away from injuries sustained when he crashed his bike on August 21. A chapter mileage contest winner, Harold had been an active and loyal member of this HOG chapter for many years. Most chapter members will miss Harold for his sense of humor and cheerful spirit. Sunday, Oct. 18- Chapter picnic at Red Rock Canyon State Park There is a chapter ride to the picnic (9:30/10- Valero) but you can cage it or ride it on your own. Rain or shine, hot or cold we play in the big hole in the ground. The chapter will provide the food but you will need to bring your own liquid refreshments. 2 Dinner Ride to Baluu s, OKC, August 21 On August 21, 18 Storm Riders assembled at Fort Thunder H-D. It was a warm night, but a very comfortable night for riding in August. By Jud Webster, We traveled to Telephone Road and turned north. We rode west on 134 th to Santa Fe, where we turned north. At I-240 we went west to Airport Rd., then turned back north on MacArthur Blvd., where we traveled north until we turned west on Reno. At Council Road we turned north, rode for about a mile, then arrived at Baluu s Restaurant on Northwest 10th and Council. Jud Webster was the lead road captain, filling in for Larry Burgess, who was called out of town. Rick Marinelli served as sweep road captain. Menu favorites were all kinds of Vietnamese and Chinese dinners. American favorites such as pork chops and hamburgers were also good. The food was good, the service was good and everyone had a good time. This is a place we need to return to. Dinner Ride to Bilyeu s, Dibble, September 4 The ride started at Fort Thunder at 7 pm. We left right on time. We had 15 bikes and 20 riders. By Larry Burgess, The weather was great. Sure was glad to see the 50% chance of rain was on our side, and the rain did not arrive. We rode from Fort Thunder over to I-44, down to Hiway 37, west over to 76 and down 76 to Bilyeu's. I had the fish, all you care to eat, buffet, and it was great. Some of the others ordered from the menu and I heard nary a complaint. My thanks to Jud and Rick Hudson for their help on the ride. And let's do it again sometime. 2

3 Progressive Ride to Ku Ku Burgers, Miami, August 29 I was the lead road captain, Rick Hudson was the mid rider and Lee Alan was the sweep. We had 21 bikes and 25 people, including 5 new members on their first ride with the chapter. By Ira Frame, We went north from Fort Thunder on I-35 to Britton Rd. There we turned east until we got to Hiawasee Rd. and Roosters Café. We had a great breakfast! The ham special really was special. It was a very large piece of ham that was very tasty, with two eggs and toast or biscuits and gravy. After breakfast we turned our chrome steeds north on Hiawasee Rd until we got to Route 66. We turned east and followed the mother road until we got into Tulsa and had to go on I-44 to where route 66 splits off again in Catoosa. We followed 66 all the way up to Miami OK, where we visitied a great farmers market. Then we found our way to KuKu s and had a wonderful lunch. After lunch we mounted up and headed back the way we came. In Claremore we found one of the oldest Braum s stores in the state. Almost everyone had ice-cream of one sort or another. Once again we headed back to where we started. This time when we crossed Tulsa we took the interstate, riding the turnpike to OKC. At the midway service area the screw came out of my eyeglasses. Not having a spare screw, I did the next best thing and bought a pair of cheap sunglasses. Now I really need my glasses to read signs, look at my speedometer etc. It was getting dark and the sunglasses were only keeping the wind out of my eyes. Add to the dark my astigmatism and was it a fun ride from there. I guess my bike knows how to get home and we did. It was a full day s ride -442 miles total. It was fun and we should do again. Or will you stay home that 2nd weekend and start decorating for Halloween, or maybe you just have to watch those Cowboys or Sooners knock off a hopeful just to gain front page rights on the sports page, or better yet, you ve already winterized your bike and it and/or your leather jacket have never seen the back roads in late September through mid-april. Most everyone knows October in Oklahoma is pretty darn good riding and the sights are postcard perfect. So why not find a purpose, visit a place you probably haven t, other than driving through and only stopping for gas, and hook up with your H.O.G. and Chapter family for the weekend of Oct 8th OK, I m done for the time being. I know I ranted and raved about the Oklahoma State Rally, but when you ve been behind the scenes and attended the planning meetings like I have, you know how much goes into these rallies. So I say it s about time ALL Oklahoma H.O.G. members start supporting what goes on here at home. Again, not looking to break records or become a World Wide National spot-light grabber, it s just that WE can do great rallies with help and support from all who believe and understand right here in our own backyard. At 6:20 am, Saturday, August 29th, Rick and I loaded up the bikes with sunscreen and our daily necessities and went to meet everyone at Fort Thunder. We actually had to put on our jackets. It felt really good to be riding in the fresh cool air, instead of the dead dry heat we have had. When we arrived at Fort Thunder there was a bright smile on everyone s face you could tell there was just something different. The cool air, the roar of the bikes coming through the parking lot, the sun was shinning bright and everyone seemed anxious to ride. After catching up on what our riding buddies have been up to, we lined up and headed to Roosters Café for breakfast. Some on their 1st group ride with the chapter were Ray Kubiszewski, Anthony Merka, David and Laura Boyce. Other new members were Craig and Mari Kaufman, Troy Davis, and Brian and Shirley Feguson. As we all finished up breakfast and headed to the bikes. The sun had warmed up the day enough to shed the jacket and put on another coat of sunscreen. The ride up Route 66 to Tulsa was really nice. Some goats that were lined up along the road turned their heads simultaneously as the bikes went by, as if they were counting the Harleys invading their territory. The horses looked up as if to say Hey it s a little early for this noise We all finally got to Ku Ku s and ordered our food. When you picked up your food one of the ladies at the counter would put a keychain on your tray with your order and the keychain was the shape of a Harley Ultra Classic. How cool, we all said. You know how bikers like anything Harley and free. The food orders took a little time. I really think they were a little overwhelmed by our numbers. We sat at our booths and discussed riding, when Shirley Ferguson spoke up and suggested we ride on into Eureka Springs. It is only 71 miles to Eureka Springs from here she said in an ornery kind of voice. We all gathered outside like we usually do and decided to take some pictures of our group. Telling jokes and contemplating on going to Eureka Springs for the night, we decided we could get some toothbrushes and undies at Walgreen s and whatever else we needed for the night. Then Laura and David announced that they had a daughter near by so they were going over to visit her and her family before going home. So you see a progressive ride can turn into just that; it can progress from one fun thing to another. We all said our goodbyes and departed KuKu s in different directions. 5 Breakfast Ride to Rock Café, Stroud, September 6 What was the route: We took I-35 to Hwy 62, 62 to Hwy 99, and then 99 into Stroud By Rick Marinelli, s: Lead Rick Marinelli, Mid Ira Frame, and Sweep Rick Hudson How many went: We had 19 bikes and 24 people How the weather was: The weather was good. Menu favorites: Omelets, and short stack of pancakes. Worth a return trip: Yes, but don t be in a hurry for food. It is cooked fresh, and takes a while because of our numbers, but I think it is still worth a return visit. Comments: This breakfast ride was originally planned for Lucille s in Mulhall, but it burned down a few days before the ride. The Rock Café proved to be a good alternate destination. It is interesting that this café, which is on the national historic register, just recently reopened after being burned down in Everyone seemed to enjoy the ride and have a great time. Longhorn Trails (Continued from page 1) Saturday, Nov. 21 BT BBQ (formerly Charlie s Smokehouse) north of Blanchard (11/11:30 - FTHD). Friday, December 4 Our annual Chapter Christmas party, at Cattlemen s Café (in the annex). The menu has been set and includes carved broiled sirloin steak, fried catfish and broiled chicken breast. Side dishes include salad, green beans, baked potato and homemade yeast rolls. The cash bar opens at 4:30 and dinner will begin at 6:00. We can t forget about our fantastic dessert contest. Tradition is that we rotate desert suppliers each year between the guys and the gals and this is the women s year to put the guys to shame, by bringing their best homemade desserts. Cattlemen s will provide the contest judges. And don t forget Dirty Santa! If you wish to participate, bring along a wrapped gift with a minimum value of $25. By changing venues we were able to hold costs down this year. There is reservation fee of $25 per chapter member, which will be returned to you at the party. Each member can bring along one guest (non-member). Reservation fee for the guest is also $25 but is non-refundable. If you re wondering why a reservation fee, it is because we have to provide a head count in late November and food will be prepped based on that number. As a result, we have to pay for that food whether or not you show up. Reservation forms will be made available at the October and November chapter meetings as well as on the chapter website. Come and enjoy the fun and shenanigans, great food and fantastic sweets, along with the chapter awards and recognitions. That is more than I ve said in months, so without further delay. 6 Weavings... from the desk of Assistant Director, Terry Weaver Hello to all. Hope all is going well and you are enjoying the open road. The fall riding season is here, which brings some great opportunities to ride and enjoy the colorful foliage in our great state. Remember to dress in layers. You still need to drink lots of water and it s a good idea to keep a rain suit on the bike. Also during this time of year, remember to watch for deer and other animals. They will be moving around more now that cooler temperatures are here. Pay particular attention during early morning and dusk. It would be a good idea to know if there are any hunting areas close to the roads you plan on riding. Hunting activity will cause deer to move around a lot more. At night or any low light conditions, if you see two red dots looking at you from Lame Ass Ride to Nowhere, September 12 It was a dark and gloomy night better make that day. The weather heads said it would probably rain and guess what. For once they were right. Due to the threat of rain, only the bravest showed up. Yours truly (Ira) led by default, while Troy Williams was the sweep rider. Jeff Scroggins stepped up to be the mid rider. We had a total of 8 riders on 6 bikes and no cages. We left Fort Thunder heading west on 149 th. We turned south onto I44 then left the super-slab for highway 37 west. We turned north on highway 4 to Mustang to get on highway 152 only to have to detour around a parade the town was having. After seeing more of Mustang than we had planned, we finally got back on 152 to continue west. About 4 miles east of Binger OK, there is a historical marker on the south side of the road with a large paved area to park on. Yep, you guessed it. This was the nowhere we went to, 61 miles from Fort Thunder. This historical marker was about the Britton school that used to be ½ mile east of where the marker is today. After we stopped at nowhere, we continued on to Meek s 152 Café in Binger where they have excellent burgers and the onion rings are hard to beat. We had only been sprinkled on a very little bit so far. But while riding back, we would have gotten soaked, but everyone had their rain gear, and we rode out of the rain after about 10 or 12 miles. the side of the road it s a good bet they belong to some kind of furry critter. As most of you know, I have been facilitating a New Member Orientation Class this year. I have conducted two of these classes. Based on the feedback I have gotten and the number of attendees, and the amount of fun I have had doing this, I plan on continuing this program. The purpose of the class is to help new members get acquainted with the chapter and the benefits of being a member of our chapter. The class, lasting 45 minutes to 1 hour, consists of a slide show presentation, a short video, a question and answer time, and weather permitting, a short group ride. (this is a pretty laid back class) If you are relatively new to the chapter and have not attended one of these classes, look for the next one on November 7th, 9:30 am at Fort Thunder H-D upstairs in the HOG room. I will have a signup sheet at the October chapter meeting. Grand Foo Pah Award Mike Gaston wins the Foo Pah award this month for trying to start his bike by pushing the turn signal instead of the starter switch. After several tries and becoming very annoyed, our award winner angrily called out My %*@*#> bike won t start!! We are all wondering how much alcohol was involved in this incident. 6
