STORM RIDERS CHAPTER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY H.O.G. October 2014 October 2014 This group of Storm Riders enjoyed a nice cool fall day by riding 105 miles to Pawnee, OK, for a delicious steak dinner. 1
Rick s Rumblings By Rick Marinelli, Director Hello Storm Riders, I hope you are enjoying the nice riding weather. I have been, especially in the mornings, riding to work. I just want to forget my way and ride all day. Fall is here, and the weather could be in the 50s in the morning and the 80s in the afternoon, so dress in layers so you can stay comfortable, and enjoy your ride. This is the time of year that we have officer positions open, and we have several stepping down to be regular members, just to ride and have fun this year. Treasurer, Ladies Of Harley officer and Activities officer are open. However, you can run for any position that you would like to. Just send me a letter of intent by the chapter meeting on October 8, It is easy. All it has to say is my name is Bob and I want to be the LOH officer of the Storm Riders. me at rmarinelli62@gmail.com. Gene Dutton, along with Lynn Cavin, still have a lot of rides and activities set up for you until the end of the year, so come out and enjoy riding and socializing with your Harley family. Remember the State Rally in Claremore is October I hope to see everyone there having fun and meeting new friends from other chapters. That's all for now. I hope to see you at one of our many chapter activities. Until next time, Keep the rubber side down and enjoy your rides! 3 Up with the Sun, Gone with the Wind by Lynn Cavin, Activities Officer Season s Greetings! I figured I d better go ahead and get that in since a few of our local stores have already put their Christmas items out! Eventually, we ll see every Back to School and Christmas stuff all brought out at the same time. We did see some rain in September, but we also had a handful of some excellent riding days. I hope many of you were able to capitalize on those few perfect days that actually happened on the weekends! So here we are entering the fall season, which can be a roller coaster of temperatures. Besides our dinner rides, we have the Oklahoma State HOG Rally in Claremore on Oct th. Although the preregistration period is closed, you can go to for information about the rally and area hotels. We ve heard the Claremore ones are booked, but there are some in nearby Tulsa available. And there are usually some cancellations in the close hotels as the rally date draws closer, so it might be good to check with them. On Sunday, Oct. 19 th, Fort Thunder has organized a Save the Ta-Ta s Poker Run that will benefit Oklahoma Project Woman. Registration is at the store from 10am to 11am, and first bike out at 11:30am. Last bike in at 4pm at Mooney s on I- 35. Check the store website under events to find specific info for this run. It looks like some nice prizes will be awarded! On Saturday evening, Oct. 25 th, we ll have our Halloween party in the upstairs meeting room at FTHD from 7pm to 10pm. Bring a snack to share, and whatever you wish to drink. There might be a game of Left-Right-Center, so bring your bag of quarters! Costumes are great, but don t feel like you have to wear a costume in order to attend. We ll have a couple of games with prizes for the winners, and prizes for best costume and so forth. Come hang out with us for awhile! Lastly, the Toy Run to benefit Santa s Express here in Moore has been moved from Saturday, Nov. 1, to the next Saturday, which is Nov. 8 th. Details to come on this, but we hope all of our members will donate toys or money to help this worthy cause! Have a great month and stay safe out there! 2014 Overnight Ride Information Ride Date Hotel Address Phone Rate Notes OK State HOG Rally Oct Various Claremore hotels Rally site: Veteran s Expo Center, 400 S Veteran s Parkway, Claremore, OK hogrally.com (no spaces) Choose your hotel Pre-registration is over, but you from the website. can still register after you get there! 4 LOH Overnight Ride to Quartz Mountain State Park, September The Ladies of Harley Ride this year took us to Quartz Mountain Resort in the southwest corner of the state. With record rainfall predicted for the weekend, we were wondering if the ride was going to be all cages. But as the week went on, the chances of rain were getting smaller every day. Our day started on Saturday morning meeting at the Fort at 10:30am. We had our safety briefing at 10:45am and rolled out at 11:00am. Our route took us west on Hwy 37 through TriCity, Tuttle and Minco. We took Hwy 81 north from Minco and picked up Hwy 152 west just north of town. Hwy 152 is a great road that took us through some nice curves out by Salyer Lake. We picked up Hwy 281 and went south to the Wichita Travel Stop for our rest stop. After a short break we continued on Hwy 281 to Anadarko to Hwy 9 and followed it through town. Hwy Denise Jones Road Captain 9 took us on to Fort Cobb, Carnegie and Mountain View. Just before Carnegie we were met with a few sprinkles of rain, but we just kept on rolling! At Hwy 183 we went south to Hwy 9 and west to Hwy 44 just east of Lone Wolf. At Hwy 44 we turned south for about 12 miles to the entrance of the resort. The ride through the park was nice and several campers were in the campgrounds. The front desk had all our rooms ready so check-in went smoothly. Some rested up from the ride, others went exploring the grounds, Lake Atlus-Lugert and a few of us cooled off in the pool. At 5:00pm we left for the ride over to Blair to the Back Door Steakhouse about 11 miles away. (Continued on page 5) 4
Safety Briefs by Lindell Smith, Safety Officer Fall Riding Weather Hello, my fellow chapter members. I hope you have enjoyed a safe, fun-packed summer riding season. As summer winds down, it's comforting to know we live in a state where we can ride year-around. However, we must plan accordingly for fall weather riding. As the daylight hours become shorter and temps cool down, we need to be prepared. Below are some tips for you. DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Don't get left in the cold. In the fall, temperatures can run the spectrum from warm to freezing and rain, all in the course of a day. And once the sun starts to set, the temps will drop off sharply. So, it's a good idea to keep cold weather gear with you in case you get detained or want to ride longer. Always include your rain gear, which can be used to keep you warm even if it isn't raining. It's also a good idea to keep a pair of clear glasses and/or a clear face shield for your helmet for low light conditions. And remember: Being cold can diminish your ability to control your motorcycle safely. LEAVES ARE FALLING: Many people venture out to scenic areas to view the fall colors, presenting a couple of hazards. Drivers may be distracted and not paying attention to the road, and may not see you. Be sure to maintain a greater safety margin, if possible. When leaves begin to accumulate on the roadways, they can be very slick. Wet or dry, leaves can can reduce traction, making it difficult to stop. A simple reduction of speed and awareness can make all the difference. WILDLIFE: Wildlife become more active in the fall. Pay close attention to roadways and shoulders especially in rural areas. Movement will peak at dusk and dawn, so stay alert. FROST AND ICE: Fall in Oklahoma brings variable weather conditions. Midday temperatures may be warm and comfortable for riding, while overnight temperatures may take a dive. Be aware of possible frost/ice conditions on the roadways, especially on bridges, elevated roadways, and overpasses in the early morning hours. TAKE A BREAK: Maybe you need a warm drink, or you need to layer up or down. It never hurts to take a break. The fall offers lots of good riding opportunities, so take advantage of this beautiful season to enjoy God's wonderful creation. Thank You! Ride safe, ride often and repeat! (continued from p. 4) The restaurant was ready for us and we were seated promptly. The food was really good and their Back Door bread with honey butter was awesome! Gary Cavin was the last to be served and still had to send his steak back to the kitchen as it was still mooing at him! For his patience and understanding they gave him a complimentary slice of cheesecake! The restaurant s slogan is you have to be lost to find it. Several members said they had never been there before, but it is definitely worth a return trip. On Sunday morning everyone left out on their own and enjoyed a nice partly cloudy ride for most of the way back. We had 21 people on 15 bikes, Otis and Jodi Mooney in their cage and the Hansmeyers met us there in their cage. Thank you to Lynn Cavin as the mid road captain, Colleen Smith for the sweep road captain and Radioman Moe, for keeping me updated on all the riders! 5

Dinner Ride to Click s Steakhouse, Pawnee, September 14 The weather was just about perfect when twentyseven Storm Riders met at OnCue on a beautiful fall morning to take a ride to Pawnee, OK, to eat steak! seemed pretty interesting to the locals watching, as twenty-two Harleys made a U-turn, when I missed the turn onto hwy 18 north, but we finally all ended up headed in the right direction. When we arrived at Click s, we were pleasantly surprised to be seated quickly, since we had been told they do not take reservations on Sunday. We were all served quickly, with most doing the buffet, and the food was delicious, as always! By Linda Webster Road Captain We headed east on I240 and turned north on Douglas Blvd, riding way north to Spencer Road, where we veered east, then hit Choctaw Road Bypass, and cruised onto Hog Back Road. Then we turned right and headed east on Rt. 66. At Chandler we took Hwy 18 north to Cushing. It must have This is a great place and a fun 105 mile ride, and I vote we do it again next year!! Thanks to Barry Dethloff, our mid road captain, who led an excursion to visit the U.S. oil reserve in Cushing on the way home. Also, thanks go to my sweep RC, Ray Sarchet, who worked out the first part of the route through all those lovely winding back roads. 7
Summer is over and fall is here! The days are getting shorter and the temperatures are definitely getting cooler. This is my favorite time of the year to ride and I hope to get a lot of miles on my bike before Old Man Winter (don t say that too loud) gets here! For those of you who did not make the LOH ride to Quartz Mountain...you missed a great ride! A few of the LOH ladies can tell you that I was really sweating it on the weather forecast. Four plus inches of rain flash flooding southwest corner of that state!! Oh no we are not canceling we will just go for a nice drive in the cage! Well Mother Nature had mercy on us and stalled that storm in Texas! The weather was perfect with only a few sprinkles on Saturday and partly cloudy Leather and Lace by Denise Jones, LOH Officer for the ride home on Sunday. Dinner on Saturday night at the Back Door Steakhouse was great as well! Thank you to all the chapter members who went on the ride! Be sure to check out my ride report in this month s newsletter for the full story. Good friends, good riding and good food always make for a great time! At the September chapter meeting I mentioned about saving small boxes to be used during our gift wrapping the Christmas season at the dealership. If you have any you would like to contribute, please bring to any of the next three chapter meetings. Also at the September meeting, Rick Marinelli announced officer positions that will be open for next year. As I will be stepping down from the Ladies of Harley position, that opens it up for a new officer. It s been a fun three years and I know whoever is the next LOH officer will do a great job. If any lady of the chapter is interested and wants the inside scoop on this position, please let me know. Also Rick has asked for letters of intent to be sent to him by the October chapter meeting. The next LOH meeting will be on Saturday, October 4 th at 11:00am at Fort Thunder. Please note the time change is different from the September newsletter. We will start working on our bows for the Christmas gift wrapping! I hope to see you there! If you are not receiving the LOH meeting notices, please me at djones1989@yahoo.com so I can add you to my distribution list. That s all for now ride safe and have fun! B o x M o o r e, O K Storm Riders Chapter, Oklahoma Territory Monthly newsletter Let s meet Our monthly meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club 6501 S. Country Club Drive Wednesday, October 7:00 p.m. Dinner Ride to Charlie s Grill, Choctaw, September 6 Well, it wasn t rain like on the Rooster Ride, but it was a soggy ride, nonetheless. A handful of our chapter members were enjoying a somewhat cool trip down the Illinois River over this particular weekend, so I suspected the attendance would be down, especially since it was pouring about an hour before time to meet at Fort Thunder. There were six bikes and two cages, for a total of nine people who ventured out to Choctaw to try Charlie s Sports Bar. There was an OU game on, and there were quite a few people there watching the game. Since it was raining, I cut the route down a little to a more direct route, basically going east to Sooner on 4 th street, south to 19 th, and then east out to Choctaw Road. We turned north and went up to NE 23 rd, where we went back to the west to our restaurant. This may have been the only dinner ride I have ever been on that I did not get to wave at one single bike the entire ride. The corner at Choctaw and 149 th got my attention, as my back wheel got a little squirrelly as I made that left turn. Nothing major, just a little Hello! moment. by Lynn Cavin Road Captain Most of us got burgers of some sort, and the n e w o w n e r checked on us frequently to make sure we were well taken care of. We had one guest join us, and he has since joined the chapter. Guess we didn t scare him off! By the time we rode home, the rain had stopped, and I actually got into 6 th gear on I-35 for a little while. Thanks to my middle and sweep road captains, Brad Nelson and Gary Cavin, for coming out and getting their bikes all dirty, too. 10
