Director s Chat By David Wiist, Director...and anything else that comes to mind... Merry Christmas Storm Riders Chapter! I hope you and your families have a joyous Christmas celebration over the next 30 days. It is very hard to believe we have practically completed a full year. We have had some BIG changes in 2008 that will really set the pace for what is in store for us in 2009 and beyond. It is almost like a very long ride, we never know what s around the next turn or over the next hill until we get there. I am looking forward to 2009 and hope that all of you will follow in behind, and continue the journey that we have begun. Let s talk about RE-NEWING your Chapter Dues!! As of this here chicken scratch I put out, there Longhorn Trails By Jeff Scroggins, Activities Officer It s bad news, good news time. The bad news here we are heading into the cold, wet and sometimes white part of the year. We re also drawing to an end another year of great riding. The good news we only have about 90 days until the warmer weather gets here and between now and then we will have some great riding days. We also have to look forward to some great rides and events with our chapter family (guess there ll probably be a few meals stuck in there as well; BBQ anyone?). And speaking of good news, bad news remember not too long ago have only been about 30 or so renewals. I know it s only the first week of December, but let s not put this off and get distracted by the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Your dues help with the operating funds needed to get us going at the 1 st of every year. It allows us to keep the throttle open and running without slowing down too much, going from December into Janaury. Dues are $20 a person up to and on January 15, Any dues AFTER January 15 for the rest of the 2009 year (for existing members / prior members) will be raised to $24 a person. Of course all the normal things apply; you must first have your National H.O.G. membership in order before you can join or renew with any local chapter. Each member joining a Chapter MUST have his or her own National H.O.G. number (ex: spouses, children, significant others, etc.) in order to join the local chapter. There (Continued on page 4) when we were all complaining that about having to spend more than 10 bucks to fill our tanks? I never figured we d see the day again, when we could fill it for less than that 10 bucks. Rain or shine, we ride, ice or snow, we don t go There are a couple of sign-up events quickly coming up on the calendar. We are planning to make our first trip to a comedy club. We will be meeting at Looney Bin for a night of laughs on Saturday, January 10. Reservation sign-up will be at the December chapter meeting only and a refundable to chapter members fee of $12 is required. The club only seats 250, so if you want to enjoy the night seated with the chapter be sure to sign up. (Continued on page 5) page 1

Captain s Log What was the route: From Valero we took the I-35 Frontage Rd south to 27th St/104th St and followed it to MacArthur Blvd and SW 74th St to OK-152. From OK-152 we traveled north on OK-4 through Yukon and Piedmont until it T d at Waterloo Rd where we headed west for a short stretch and then turned north on the first paved road we came to until we came to OK-33. With a short stop along the way, we followed OK-33 east and then US-177 north into Stillwater, where we turned left onto Hall of Fame Avenue to the restaurant. By Dave Bergman, Road Captain Dinner Ride to Joseppi s, Stillwater, October 26 Road Captains: Lead Dave Bergman, Mid Ira Frame, Sweep Rick Marinelli How many went: 19 on 13 bikes The weather: Low 70s and very windy. Menu favorites: Bread, Bread, and more Bread., and many pasta dinners with tomato or alfredo sauces with or without meat Worth a return trip: Of course. Incidents that made this ride memorable: This was planned to be a leisurely ride (we traveled 104 miles in 2 hrs and 45 mins) up there, but some people were obviously hungry and reminded me the speed limit signs were suggested minimums. Our waitress, Janae, was quite a bit of fun even if someone couldn t get their salad fast enough. She even wore the Foo-Pah vest for a short time around the restaurant and she seemed to like the tail and a few probably thought the vest s panties looked better hanging down behind her than behind Rick. We also learned Janae is a McAlester native who loves the Italian food in Krebs speaking of which, more than one rider mentioned that he or she enjoyed Joseppi s food more than at Pete s Place a few weeks ago. Janae is a Child Psychology major at OSU, so our trip could possibly end up being analyzed in one of her papers about child-like behavior in adults. page 2

Dinner Ride to Boneyard Grill, Guthrie, November 1 We met at Fort Thunder Harley Davidson and proceeded north on Telephone Road. At 134 th street, we turned west to I-44 and headed south to exit 108, where we took Hwy 37 west, all the way to Hwy 81 at Minco. There we rode north to El Reno. At the junction of Hwy 81 and Hwy 66, we traveled north on Sheppard Street, to bypass downtown El Reno. At Foreman Road we turned onto Hwy 81 again. We traveled north to the Shell Service Station, just south of Kingfisher, for a brief pit stop. We traveled again through Kingfisher to Hwy 33 turning east going toward Guthrie. At Division Street in Guthrie, we turned south to the Boneyard Grill. Jud Webster served as Lead road captain. Larry Burgess was mid, and Ira Frame was sweep. 15 bikes, a cage, and 20 members made the ride, with 2 meeting us at the restaurant. Mother Nature shined down on us with temps in the high 70 s and little wind. Menu favorites were falling off the bone ribs. We definitely want to make a return visit. In Newcastle, most of the group were stopped at a traffic light. The Lead Road Captain, not realizing the group had almost caught up, decided to pull over and wait for the others to catch up. Then we all practiced a u- turn in a parking lot and were back on the road again. Great job riders!! The ladies loved the colorful foliage along the countryside. It was a perfect fall day. Captain s Log By Jud Webster, Road Captain Time for Christmas Shopping!! Fort Thunder H-D will be open on Sunday, December 14 and 21 from 10 am to 5 pm for Christmas shopping. Be sure to stop by and take advantage of some great deals at our sponsoring dealership. page 3

Dinner Ride to Rudy s, Norman, November 9 What a great day for a ride. The temperature was in the mid 50 s, with a sunny sky and not much wind. 23 members of the Storm Riders H.O.G. chapter, along with 2 minor guests, met at 11:30 a.m. on November 9 at the Valero station for what turned out to be a great day of riding. 18 bikes left at 12:00 noon. We went east out to Lake Stanley Draper, and continued east on 149th. The route went south at Peebly Road to hwy 9. We went east on hwy 9 to hwy 102, where we took a break at the Sinclair station. We continued south on hwy 102 to hwy 39, then came back west into Lexington, where we took hwy 77 north into Norman. Hwy 9 west took us to Rudy s. The ride was about 2 and a half hours long. At Rudy s, Wendy was waiting with 4 other members to surprise Keven with a Birthday cake. Only 3 letters are needed to describe the menu: BBQ. It was very, very good. My thanks to Chris Copeland for riding mid, and Rick Marinelli for riding sweep, and a special thanks to Jud Webster for making sure nobody went to meet at Fort Thunder by mistake. I was able to include a little extra into the ride, such as wildlife viewing, both alive (deer) and dead (skunk). Larry Burgess, Road Captain Captain s Log By Larry Burgess, Road Captain Grand Foo-Pah Award This month s Foo-Pah winner is Debbie Bergman, who had a meltdown while riding through the curves and hills of the Talimena drive. She dropped her sunglasses, after taking them off during some stormy weather. But at the next rest stop, her hubby, Dave, noticed something strange. What is this weird Okie insect stuck to my bike? he exclaimed, peeling the remains of Debbie s glasses from the exhaust pipe. Now Debbie wishes she had really lost those glasses. page 6

Train Ride to Fort Worth, Smith November BigDawg howling By Bill Dimsdale, Safety Officer October thru December are the months Oklahoma motorcyclists are most likely to hit a deer; these are the months that deer are in their mating season. Between 5 and 10 pm are the danger times. 1. Deer travel in groups. One deer means there are probably more, so even if the one you see is off the road and going away, slow way down immediately. 2. Heed deer-crossing signs, particularly in the seasons and times of day when deer are active. Slow down, use your high beam, and cover the brakes. 3. Additional good, powerful driving lights are worth their weight in gold on a deserted road at night. Alternatively, fit a bulb with a 100-watt high-beam. 4. Noise a horn, revving your engine, etc. may drive deer away. 6. Deer and other wild animals are designed to be hard to see. Aside from the flickering white tail of some species or reflection from an eye, they simply disappear. However, this absence of reflected light can also tip you off. A "hole" in a white fence or wall or "missing" roadside reflectors at night might be an animal. A reflector that "blinks" might also indicate an animal passing between you and it. 7. If riding in a group, spread out. This will keep one rider who hits a deer from taking other riders down with him. 8. If a collision appears imminent, do not swerve. Braking hard right up to the point of impact is good, but you want to be stabilized if you do collide, which will give you the greatest chance of remaining upright. 5. Flashing your headlights may break the spell that seems to cause deer to freeze. page 7
