2 Central Oklahoma #1 members pose outside our meeting place, the Willow Creek Golf & Country Club LOH Noise By Cindy Barghols-Copeland Ladies of Harley Coordinator Our Attach Your Patch service is open for business. We have already received our first couple of customers. We also are working on our Harley T-shirt quilt giveaway. Please clean out your closets and drawers and donate your old T-shirts to L.O.H. We want you to have plenty of room to add new Harley shirts from all your riding this summer. We will have a quilt made and start selling tickets soon. Tickets will be sold all the way through the state rally, with the winner announced soon thereafter. The L.O.H. overnight ride will be on Sept. 16 th and 17 th. The destination will be announced at the next Chapter meeting. Mark those dates on your riding calendar. Our chapter has been growing by leaps and bounds. I have been asked by new members if we would consider wearing name tags at the Chapter meetings. We implemented that at the June meeting. Name tags will be placed on each table and we do ask that everyone get in the habit of wearing them. We want our new members to feel welcome and comfortable and want everyone to know each other on a firstname basis. After all, we are just one big family. You will also find note paper and pens on the tables so you can take notes during the meeting. We are collecting information for our chapter directories. Several forms were filled out and turned it at the last meeting. We will continue to have forms available at the meetings. The only way to get a directory is to include your own info in it. If you do not participate, you will not be offered a directory. 3 The Gator s Den By Frank Gator Smith Safety Officer Hello to my fellow Chapter brothers and sisters. We re beginning the second half of the year, and the temperature is beginning to rise again. Below you ll find an article on preventing dehydration, and I encourage you to take a look at the prevention tips. Thanks to all who attended our Safety Training meeting on June 10 th. We had a group discussion about the Rooster Ride and the road captains discussed the routing and other good information about the ride. Afterward, we conducted a brief courtesy inspection on the motorcycles and I m glad to say that no serious problems were discovered. Several of us went to Harry Bears for lunch after the training. I am still soliciting ideas for training that you would like to have. We re trying to be creative and not cover the same material each time. but we really need to know what you would like to see or do. If you have any suggestions, please let me or one of our road captains know, and we ll see what we can put together. Thanks and let s have Safe and Fun riding for the second half of the year. Preventing Dehydration Water is one of the most important nutrients in our body. It makes up approximately 70 percent of our muscles, and about 75 percent of our brains. We use water as well as expend it. In fact just in everyday breathing we lose about two cups of water. Other ways that we lose body water are through sweating and urinating. If we fail to replenish these losses, we set ourselves up to become dehydrated. If our body senses low water stores, it will tell the kidneys to conserve the water instead of excreting it (darker colored urine will result). Dehydration can lead to constipation and bloating as well. Some other symptoms of dehydration include dry mouth and tongue, apathy and a lack of energy, and muscle cramping. If left untreated, dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. These symptoms include: fatigue, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, headache, rapid shallow breathing, high temperatures, rapid heart beat, and decreased alertness or complete loss of consciousness. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), more than 6,600 people died from heat-related causes between 1979 and And in 1997, 130 people died in Texas during the summer. These statistics are grim, but dehydration is 100 percent preventable. Here are some practical tips to prevent you from becoming dehydrated this summer: Drink plenty of fluids: on average it is recommended to consume at least 8- eight ounce glasses of fluid a day Sports drinks can encourage active people to drink more fluids because they are flavored and are higher in sodium Avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol; both contain substances that will cause dehydration Avoid carbonated beverages because the carbonation may cause bloating or a feeling of fullness and prevent adequate consumption of fluids Wear light-colored, absorbent, loose fitting clothes Stay in cool, shaded areas and protect your skin with sunblock whenever possible For most of us, being aware and prepared is the easiest way to prevent dehydration from occurring. On hot humid days, an active person can become dehydrated in just 15 minutes. If you experience any of the symptoms above, stop the activity and rest in a cool area. Then drink fluids to replenish the water lost. Adapted from: Preventing Dehydration and Heat Illness; American College of Emergency Physicians and Preventing Dehydration by L. Reilly. Vegetarian Times. January Foo-Pah Jim Sodowski was part of the group that went on an Iron Butt ride. While everyone was ready to get on the road, he decided he needed some air in his tire. He tried to add some at the start, but said the air hose was sucking instead of blowing. So, he left with the group but got off by himself to add some air on the way, and never did catch up with the group. He claims he tried to catch up all the way to Amarillo, but never did find them. So Jim Airhead Sodowski gets to wear the Foo-Pah vest all month. Page 3

6 Dinner ride to McGehee s Catfish Restaurant, Marietta June 17, 2006 Captain s log On 6/17/06, we had a dinner ride to McGehee's Catfish Restaurant. We had 8 bikes with 9 people. Our hardy and adventurous group left Brian HD at about 10:45 Saturday morning. Our route took us west on SW 104th, then south on I-44 to Hwy 37 where we turned west to Hwy 92 south bound. We traveled south to Hwy 62, which we took into Chickasha. Our group navigated through Chickasha to Hwy 19 and on into Lindsay for our first stop. In Lindsay we picked up Hwy 76 south bound. This is a very pleasant and scenic stretch of road. We encountered an old expansion bridge, skirted the western edge of the Arbuckles, and enjoyed the rolling hills. On Hwy 70, we turned east and had our second stop at the gas station/casino in Wilson. After some refreshment and fuel, we headed east into Ardmore. In Ardmore we followed Hwy 77 through town, got back on Hwy 70 and went east to Hwy 77S, which we took around the west side of Lake Murray. This is a very scenic route with some great rolling curves. We then got on Hwy 32, which took us through Marietta to Allen Road and right to McGehee's Restaurant. The day started out with some ominous-looking clouds in the sky; however, dressed in rain gear our group was determined to have a great day of riding. As it turned out, the weather shined on our little group. The temperature was very pleasant and actually warmed up enough that we shed our rain gear at Lindsay and it was almost hot when we arrived at our destination. Before going into the restaurant, our chapter photographer took a group picture in front of the building. Once at the restaurant, we were greeted with a warm welcome and good food. Of course, fish was the item of choice --- all you can eat. After about 180 miles on our bikes, we were all ready to eat. Jeff Scroggins was so hungry he said he was ready to eat the south end of a north bound skunk!!!!! But we couldn't find one. The wait staff at the restaurant was very pleasant; our waitress joked with the entire group. However, she did spend a little more time around Harold Thompson. The owner invited us back anytime and said to come back during the State HOG Rally for more fun and fish. This was one great ride. The combination of good friends, good weather and riding is hard to beat. Those of you that chose not to join us on this ride missed a great fun-filled day. I want to thank Al Hudson, Jeff Scroggins, Dennis Carroll, Frank Jones, Harold Thompson, Peggy and Allen Vestle and my wife Nancy for all of their help in making this a fun-filled and memorable ride. I think we should do this again. See you on the next ride. Terry Weaver, road captain Page 6

8 Dinner ride to The Stables, Guthrie, May 21, 2006 IT S TIME FOR THE OKLAHOMA STATE RALLY S CHAPTER CHALLENGE FOR VOLUNTEERS! Greetings to all our brothers and sisters of H.O.G., With the Oklahoma State H.O.G. Rally fast approaching, as Registration Coordinator for this year s rally, I am sending out the call for your help. As in the State Rallys of the past, each Oklahoma H.O.G. chapter was asked to volunteer some of its Chapter members to work a shift at the registration tables and various other locations at the rally site. This has always been a successful endeavor, because it allows all the State Chapters to participate in the business end of the rally and opens opportunities to intermingle with all the rally participants. I would like to continue this effort and ask that your Chapter members volunteer some of their time to work a short shift period within the various duties in not only the Registration area but also in the Security Area. However, we have again added a challenge to this year s volunteer recruitment. The State Rally Committee thought that it would be fun to make this a Chapter Challenge again this year. Since not all the chapters have the same number of members; we will calculate it by percentage. The winning chapter will take home not only bragging rights but also a trophy that they can display at their dealership. Who really is the most dedicated H.O.G. chapter in the state of Oklahoma? Well, I guess volunteer numbers will tell the truth! I have sent your Assistant Director a Registration and Security date and time sheet for your Chapter. Please find this form and fill-in your name to volunteer. The goal is that your chapter fill up the slots in your designated time because for every hour that you work, your chapter will receive credit, and YOU will receive a special ticket for the volunteer drawings at the closing ceremony of the rally for each hour that you work. We will also need volunteers throughout the rally site. The extra slots for volunteers will be on a first-come, first-served basis. You will need to see me and put your name on a list when you get to the rally site. It will then be your responsibility to check with me hourly to see if your help will be needed. I am looking forward to seeing each and every one of you at this year s State Rally. One thing that I can promise you is that your rewards for working are well worth your time and effort, as is the overall volunteer prize (not many people have one of them or ever will)! Well, I guess time will tell who s the most dedicated chapter at this year s 2006 rally. Will it be your chapter?? Sincerely, Fonda Smith Registration/Volunteer Coordinator for the Oklahoma State H.O.G. Rally, Inc. Page 8

9 Director s Chat cont. cannot be at that meeting, you need to let me know ASAP to make arrangements to get your tickets. I have ordered tickets for: Tiger Mike, Bobby Delk, Mike Bollinger, Al Hudson, Frank Jones, Dennis Carroll, Rick Hudson, David Bergman, Frank Smith, Kim Smith, Harold Thompson, Bill Strickland, Don Henderson, Terry Weaver, Jud Webster, Brad Nelson, Troy Williams, Walt Pierce, Ira Frame, Eddie Sims, John Williams, Jeff Scroggins, Alan Vestle, Brett Wallace, Jerry Deaton, Sandra Davis, Tedd Lash and Robert Dodson. If you cannot make this game, you will be asked to repay the chapter ($9 per ticket) since the Chapter bought your ticket. Game time is 7:05; I ll probably see you at Bricktown somewhere before the game. You can park your bike on the plaza (just north of the 3 rd base entry & the Mickey Mantle statue), just as long as we leave a corridor to the restaurants and don t block the main sidewalks. This is the LAST warning on the T-shirts that have not been picked up. If you do not make arrangements to get these shirts, they will be sold at the July Chapter meeting. The summer shirts that need a home belong to: John Carroll & Mike Maxwell. The fall shirt belongs to Glen Boyd. H.O.G. has notified me through our Chapter roster that there is a national membership that has expired and needs to be renewed. Will Bill Brown please contact H.O.G. (1-800-club-hog) or to renew his national membership. In order to be a current Chapter member, your national membership must be up to date. Thanks! If you are not going to be able to ride to Sturgis this year, we have a fun little event that is being conducted at Bryan Harley-Davidson. On August 5 th, we will have the South of Sturgis Road Rally II. This is a fun ride/drive that takes you along a route about which you answer specific questions. It is very important that you do this event as a team (2 or more). No single entries will be allowed, The reason being that there is a lot of observation involved and a single rider cannot control a bike safely and be looking all around for the answers to the questions. Prizes will be awarded to the top three places. The entry fee is $7 a person, but gets you the ride, a meal, music and prizes at the end of the ride. A portion of the fee is going to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. There will be entry forms and a set of rules available at Bryan Harley-Davidson beginning July 15 th. You will receive the designated route on the event day. So gather up an observant team member and plan to participate in the Road Rally on August 5 th. This event will happen rain or shine. The event is open to all motorized vehicles. Look for a flyer in this newsletter and on the Web site. By now you should have gotten accustomed to the new meeting facility at the Willow Creek Golf club. The staff at Willow Creek is improving monthly as they patiently figure out just what a bike gang wants when visiting a golf club. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is most pleasing. There are plenty of tables and chairs to enjoy a Chapter meeting. If you have not yet made a meeting at the new place, then you are missing out on a great time and very informational event. There is really no better way to get your Chapter information and enjoy an evening with your H.O.G. family at the same time. Chapter meetings are the second Wednesday of the month and they begin at 7 p.m. The dinner menus are usually available at 5:30 for those who want to come early and eat a great meal at a great price. We hope to see you soon! Bike Nights are still happening and going stronger than ever. I hear tell that Bryan Harley-Davidson s Bike Night at Hooters (south OKC) is the place to be on Thursday nights. If you haven t made a bike night yet, you are truly missing out. We have been averaging bikes a bike night. You need to get there a little early if you want the prime parking, as it fills up quickly. For the month of July, we have live music lined up, a Miss Bike Night Pageant and many other surprises. You can always log on to and click on the events page for times and details about bike nights. All righty then, that s about all I wish to expel at this time. July and the following months have plenty to offer, so don t be left at home wondering where we rode off to. Grab the bike and come on along. We ll see you when we see you, hopefully on the road. Until next time, Ridin Rooster Join us for an Overnighter to STROKERS DALLAS Saturday, August 19 Meet at Valero at 8:30 AM Depart at 9:00 AM Lunch stop in Gainesville at Rumpy s German Bakery Accommodations: Super 8 Motel, 9229 John Carpenter Freeway (2.6 miles from Strokers) YES, they have a pool!
