Remember to include a photocopy of your National HOG Card with the Local Membership Enrollment and Re- tntharley.com Copyright 2012 River Roads HOG Chapter 0912 All Rights Reserved Hello fellow HOG members. Since this is July, we have already had a number of events this year, including River Roads HOG, National HOG and TNT. This is a good time for a midsummer event summary. So far this year we have had some very good opportunities to get together for riding and socializing. In April there was the Good Friday Ride to Alton and the TNT Open House. May brought the HOG Memorial Day ride. June was the Illinois State HOG rally in Rosemont and the Ladies of Harley Road Rally to support the Meals on Wheels program. Also in June was The HOG World Ride and National Ride to Work Day. Out of these events, I hope you were able to participate in at least one. However, if you had other obligations, I am truly sorry, since everybody who was able to attend, reported having a great time. Not to mention happy to support a good cause. I wanted to provide a brief summary of my time at the Illinois State HOG rally. Now I have to be honest, Rosemont is not my first choice for a motorcycle event. Stuck pretty much in the middle of Chicago. I feel as HOG members we should participate in our own state s annual HOG rally. So having that in mind, Susan and I travelled up on Friday, unable to get Thursday off. Great ride up as far as weather. Great ride as far as roads and traffic, until we got to Princeton on I-80. Must have been an accident in the construction zone, because they were routing all east bound lanes through Princeton to I-180. As most of you know, stop and go traffic is not good for our big v -twin engines. My engine light came on twice, causing me to shut the engine off while sitting on I-80. But after a 45 minute detour we were back on our way to Rosemont. Man, buzzing along at highway speeds felt good again, until I-55 about 20 miles from I-294. Wouldn t you know it, stopped traffic again, this time for rush hour. That detour in Princeton delayed us long enough to put us smack dab in the middle of Friday afternoon rush hour. I won t go in to detail, but we did finally make it to the hotel, and my blood pressure did eventually lower. We stayed at the rally headquarters, which was at the Crown Plaza. The rally committee negotiated a good rate for rally goers. This area was just off of I-294, with a casino, hotels and a new outside entertainment area, the size of a hockey ice ring (may be one in the winter). There were 4-5 restaurants located around this area with a bandstand at one end. Great, great place to hold a large gathering such as a bike rally or convention. The rally schedule included the usual poker run, LOH ride, tattoo contest bike shows etc. The biggest event was Thursday night. They arranged to have a police escorted ride from the hotel to downtown Chicago to the Loop. I was very disappointed that I could not make this ride. I heard from a number of riders (it was limited to 150) that seeing four lanes of stopped traffic on I-90 brought Goosebumps to their arms. Anybody who has had the opportunity to be part of a large group ride understands the excitement involved. By all reports it was an amazing ride. Just one of the many reasons to attend any state HOG rally. 4 Page 4 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group Road Captain John Deemer We have what should be a good ride to Iowa in July. It is only about 170 miles or so one way. Therefore, we will do it in one day. However, if someone would like to spend the night rather than return back to Quincy or wherever you may be from that would be great. We will be visiting Antique Archaeology in LeClaire, Iowa on the trip. While I have never been there the map looks like there should be some good riding roads. If you have watched American Pickers on the History Channel then that is where they are from. Mike and Frank are motorcycle nuts like most of us. Maybe we can see some great old machines or parts for someone doing a restoration. We will do lunch in the area and return via a little different route. Come and ride with some of the members of your River Roads HOG Chapter. 5 Page 5 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group Guest Writer Gary Roe In my last story for the newsletter I said that I was finally able to get my first Harley, shortly after moving to Quincy. The actual negotiations on it had begun before I even moved. My Uncle Joe was great friends with the folks at Coziahr H-D in Decatur, since that is where he lived. He later went to work for them, after he retired from the railroad. This may be a little painful for Brian to read; but Uncle Joe made the deal and took care of the arrangements to get my bike ordered thru them. If I ever get another one, I promise, it ll come from TNT! Unbeknownst to me (and Aunt Sandy!), Uncle Joe ordered himself a new bike at the same time. He was moving up from a Road King to an Ultra. Both bikes came in, and were ready for us to pick up on the same day. He took delivery of his on Saturday October 10th 2005 at 8:30. I got mine at 11:00. We rode together, taking some back roads from Decatur to Quincy, so we could break them in a little. After a short rest, he rode his back to Decatur on the Interstate. After our bikes were each 1 day old, he had twice as many miles as I did. I had figured that if I put 1500 miles a year on mine, I d be doing good. By the end of the riding season in 2006, I had right at 4000 miles on it. The next year saw an additional 6000 miles put on. What was the reason for so much riding? Well, partly it was the joy of the motorcycle itself. As I said, it was what I had always wanted. It ran so nice, so smoothly, and so effortlessly. Compared to what I was used to well, there is no comparison. However, the biggest reason for putting on so many miles, was my Uncle Joe. He was always coming up with someplace he thought we ought to go. If my phone rang and he asked me what are you doing this weekend?, I could be pretty sure we were going to be riding somewhere together. I am really glad that we spent so much time on the road with each other, because less than 3 years after we got our bikes, he died of a sudden, and massive, brain aneurism. He was almost 63 years old. I lost my favorite riding partner that day. Thanks to Uncle Joe, I have more stories to tell. Remember: to join River Roads HOG Chapter 0912, you must first be a current National HOG Member. DIRECTOR Continued Also in June was Iowa s HOG rally. I briefly spoke to one River Roads member who attended, and he reported getting rained on, as we who were in Quincy know storms blew through that weekend. I would like to get a brief article from anybody who attends a state HOG rally this year. Let the rest of us know how much fun it was, or how wet they might have gotten. I will be attending the Missouri HOG rally in September. I will provide a summary of our trip in October. Upcoming in July is the Iowa HOG ride led by our Road Captain, John Deemer. This will be a one day ride and I, for one am looking forward to it. On 27 July it is TNT s night to sponsor the Blues in the District, located in Washington Park. As always, the River Roads HOG chapter will be one of the groups asked to supply people to help cook and serve drinks and food. Proceeds go to the TNT Community Disbursement Fund. If you have ever helped at this event, you know we have a blast. Well that should be enough rambling for this month. If not, then stop me the next time you see me And I will be happy to continue. Keep your ears flapping in the wind. Jim
