STORM RIDERS CHAPTER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY H.O.G. October 2012 October 2012 Ahoy, Mateys! Beware of these Storm Rider scalawags, last seen cruising the Illinois River!! 1

Our first benefit poker run in conjuction with the Moore Fire fighters was a success. We were able to give the Santa Express $1,050 and made some money for the chapter too! If you weren t there you missed seeing a terrific gal doing something few people would do. Tales from the Long Rider by Ira Frame, Director Our own Cindy Hudson won best hand, with a grand prize of $500 Thunder Bucks certificate and $500 in cash. She donated the cash she had won, to be used by the Santa Express! So next time you see Cindy, give her a huge hug from all of us. I want to give some thanks to our sponsoring dealer, Robert Dodson, for all the support he gives us. Not only did he offer up all the Thunder Bucks for the poker run, he also provides all the door prizes we give away at the monthly chapter meetings, along with the gift cards for the birthday winners. Not every Harley dealership has a H.O.G. chapter. Even though he doesn't have to, Robert has always given us more support and encouragement than many H.O.G. chapters receive. A few months ago I went to H.O.T. (H.O.G. Officer Training), and talked to several other directors. Then I came to realize that we are blessed to have such a supporting dealer. The chapter picnic is fast approaching, along with the Christmas party. If you missed signing up for the picnic, contact Brenda Stutterheim to get on the list. Last year s Halloween party was tons of fun, with all kinds of weird characters joining the fun. Come on out and get scary with this crazy group. You won t regret it! The Christmas party is on December 1 st this year. We will have a sign-up sheet for the Christmas party at the October and November chapter meetings. To reserve your spot you need to sign up and pay $30 for your reservation, which will be refunded to you at the party. You can bring a guest, but their money will not be refunded. Willow Creek Country Club increased the price by $5, therefore our deposit will be $5 more this year. But it is free to chapter members! We only require the reservation fee up front because we have to pay for a designated number of people, whether they show up or not. November brings the end to all the campaigning for political offices. It is also when we vote on chapter officers for the upcoming year. There are a few officer position openings coming up next year. If you are interested in becoming a chapter officer, contact me and I will give you a rundown of what each job entails. Send me a letter (or ) of intent for the position you think is right for you. All candidates will need to be interviewed by Robert Dodson and myself before being put on a ballot at the November meeting. Any member in good standing can run for any position if approved by Robert. He is the sponsoring dealer and he has the final word, because we represent him and his store in all we do as a chapter. That s all I have for now. See you on the next ride! Ira Frame Director, Storm Riders Chapter, Oklahoma Territory. DaPrez@cox.net 2

Hello Storm Riders! FALL IS HERE! I really love this time of the year! So glad that we have received some rain and that most of the state counties are no longer under a burn ban. The September chapter meeting was the last opportunity to be included in the supplement of the chapter directory. If you missed out, just me and I will get the form to you. I will have the supplements at the November meeting. We will begin collecting information for the 2013 directory in January. Leather and Lace by Denise Jones, LOH Officer Centerpieces are being made by the LOH for the Christmas Party. Have you made your reservations yet? It will be a fun time and be here before you know it! If you would like to help with the centerpieces please let me know and I will be glad to get you started. Thank you to the ladies who helped decorate the chapter case at the dealership for the fall season. Next time you are at Fort Thunder stop by and check it out! We are still collecting toiletry items for the LOH Sacks for Seniors project. If you have any items collected, I would like to Our next LOH meeting will be on Tuesday, October 16 th at 6:15pm at Fort Thunder. All chapter members are invited come check us out! have them all turned in by the November chapter meeting. We are also still collecting small gift boxes for the Christmas wrapping. I have saved a few small boxes that may be considered unusual for gift wrapping. So think outside the box before you throw that box away! The next LOH meeting will be on Tuesday, October 16 th at 6:15pm at Fort Thunder. All chapter members are invited come check us out! If you have any centerpieces finished, please bring them so we can share ideas. If you were at the chapter poker run you witnessed our very own Cindy Hudson, winning the high hand of $ cash and a $ gift card to FTHD. Cindy, in her ever giving heart, donated her cash winnings to the Moore fire department s Santa Express! There are going to be some really happy children on Christmas morning, thanks to Cindy! That s all for now ride safe and have fun! Denise Jones aka Sweet-n-Low Ladies of Harley Officer Breakfast Ride to Rooster s Café, Jones, September 8 It was a beautiful morning for riding: 60 to 65 degrees, with sunny and clear skies, as we headed out. Road captains for this ride were Mike Austin, lead, and Ira Frame, sweep. We had 14 people on 13 bikes. We took off from the Valero and headed north on I-35, turning east onto NW 36 until we came to Spencer Road. From there we went north to Britton Road, and turned east to Jones, OK, and Roosters Café, a total of 25 miles. It was an uneventful ride, except for what happened with Lynn Cavin, who had to have her bike towed to Ft. Thunder for a new set of rear wheel bearings. By Mike Austin Road Captain Good call from Lynn to get her bike checked out. She said it did not feel right that morning. The food was out standing. I'm sure we 4

Bill s Island Grill, Moore, September 14 Let me start out by saying thanks to everyone that showed up for the first lead ride this year!!! It sure did make me feel welcomed back into the fold! The ride was on a perfect night that threatened rain, but held back. The group met at Fort Thunder HD promptly at 6:30 for a short ride to Bills Island Grill on SW 89th off of Penn. We mingled for a bit, had a short safety meeting, and put the wind in our faces. There were nine bikes and a couple of cages with a grand total of 22 persons of interest that arrived at Bills for some good food and great fellowship! Lets do it again soon!!! Ray Kubiszewsky Road Captain - it leads to riders freezing at their controls in an emergency and taking no corrective action whatever. It leads to doubts that are self-fulfilling. "I can't make that turn!" Finally, it leads to dangerous reactions such as 'grabbing a handful of brake lever' instead of doing a CONTROLLED panic stop. But we, ALL OF US, were afraid to begin with. How to get over this?? My suggestions are simple: Message from the Safety Scout by Mike Austin, Safety Officer Fear can kill you! Convert fear into respect. Understand and acknowledge that the sport is dangerous and that what you must do to survive it is UN- DERSTAND everything you can about it. Ignorance is the cause of a great deal of fear. Make sure that the motorcycle is AL- WAYS mechanically sound. Your life depends on just two wheels, it only makes sense to insure that they are well maintained. Practice and then practice some more. Practice in all kinds of environments, not just a parking lot. Practice in the rain. Practice on gravel. Practice stopping and starting on a hill. Practice stopping quickly (in a parking lot!) Practice going fast (speed limited by law.) Practice going SLOW - this IS important! 6 Be prepared. You cannot practice enough to have experienced everything - the car that moves into your lane at freeway speeds should be an event that is new to you. The unexpected does happen - often. Sometimes, unfortunately, things break - even if properly maintained. In other words, you should assume that sooner or later you will find yourself getting off your motorcycle unintentionally (it falls over in a parking lot with ten of your friends watching you.) You should be dressed to not only survive that experience, but so that you will be uninjured or minimally affected by that dismount. (Can you say 'helmet', 'gloves', 'leather'?) Now, to go back... your objective should be to convert fear into respect. I do not mean respect merely of the dangers or of your motorcycle - those are the least of it. You need to develop a respect of YOUR- SELF - an absolute regard for your ability to CONTROL the motorcycle at all times. An immense pride in YOUR ability to make it - that is, that 100 horsepower machine - do exactly what YOU want it to do. When that happens, you have won. Remember, always think safety to get home safely.

Storm Riders Chapter, Oklahoma Territory Harley Owners Group P.O. Box 7337 Moore, OK Storm Riders Chapter, Oklahoma Territory Monthly newsletter Let s meet Chapter meeting is held on the 2nd Wednesday each month at WILLOW CREEK GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB OKLAHOMA CITY Wednesday, October 10 Cathy Isaacson My interest in biking started about 7-8 years ago when I was living in Daytona Beach, FL. I had a group of friends that rode. I was sometimes fortunate enough to be invited to ride with them on the back of someone's bike, usually with someone who did not believe in having a sissy bar. But I didn't mind. It was the most fun I had had in a long time. Biketoberfest came and went, Bike Week came and went, and I was always the participant in the cage. I did manage to make the cover of Florida Bikers Digest. Don't ask me how that happened. Then one day my friend's daughter came down to take the Motorcyle Safety Course and wanted someone to take it with her. I eagerly agreed even though I really didn't have the means to purchase a bike at the time, but her dad had several Harleys and said one would be available to me to borrow, if I should pass the course! So off Michelle and I went. We both took the weekend course and passed with flying colors. That was in Five years later...moved to Oklahoma, met the love of my life (my husband of course) and purchased my first and only bike, a 2010 Harley Fat Boy Lo. I love my bike. My husband has a Fat Boy and we so enjoy being a part of the Storm Riders Chapter. The friends that we have met are truly the best people around. No one else knows how to have a good time enjoying life on a Harley like they do except me. 8
