1 Chapter Newsletter for MAY 2007 Est Vol. # Directors Report May Director Report Spring Membership Ride Road Captains Bernie and Randy are setting up this ride. The date is May 20 th. We are to meet at the Waukon Kwik-Star; at 10:00-10:30. Destination, Dorchester Mileage Contest Signing up for the mileage contest is still on. The cost is nothing. Report your mileage to me. The champion prize is a Waukon H-D $50.00 gift certificate, $25.00 for runner-up, door prizes for other runner-ups. Feature Chapter Ride to Knoxville Members have been showing interest in the feature ride to Knoxville Tennessee. The plan so far; leave home early Tuesday morning, August 21 st, meeting at the BP in Dyersville. Knoxville is about 850 miles away, so it will take 2 easy days to get there. Getting there a day early we can ride The Dragon and Cherohala Skyway or whatever we decide. The rally is Friday and Saturday with plenty to see and do. National HOG Rallies are the best of the best. Sunday we will start back taking 2 days. Rally registration and room blocks open April 4 th. You will need to go to members.hog.com. First register and then click on accommodations, then Harley Travel Service, go from there. Iowa HOG Rally There is nothing new to report on the state hog rally, except pre-registration expires April 26 th For information go to Dealer Stamp Ride I need to explain the Dealer Stamp ride more. For those of us going to the Iowa State HOG Rally and have preregistered the rally committee will send us a conformation card. On the card is a place for 3 dealer stamps. The propose is to visit Harley dealers on the way to the rally. Since Charles City is 1 dealer away, I scheduled a ride for dealer stamps. Meet at the Edgewood Convenience Store at 10:00. We will ride to Dubuque for a stamp and on to Cedar Rapids for the 2 nd stamp. For the 3 rd we can get anytime at Waukon or Charles City. These cards are turned in at the rally when we sign in. A drawing is held for door prizes contributed by dealers throughout the state at closing ceremonies. Members not going to the state rally may ride along. Iron Butt Ride A chapter Iron Butt Ride is in the planning stage. This is a documented 1000 mile ride in 24 hours. Any chapter member can go on this challenging ride The ride is set for May 26 th. Meet at Waukon Kwik-Star at 8:00 PM. For rules, details, and documents go to Questions see me! If its pouring down rain, the ride will be postpone until later. Memorial Day Parade Our chapter has been invited to ride in the Memorial Day Parade in Waukon. The parade is at 10:00 AM, Monday May 28. It has been a few years since the chapter paraded our Hogs, so I accepted. So shine up them bikes, update your vests, get out the flags. This is a patriotic, support our troops parade. 8 th Annual Rockton Chicken Run The plan is set for this popular dinner ride. June 10 th, meet at the Monona Kwik-Star at 9:30-10:00, we ride at 10:00. Highlight your calendar for this! Pizza Night Pizza Night for May is 12 th at TJ s in Clermont. For June it s 30 th at Leo s Pizza in Oelwein. I had Bill s on the schedule, correction, it s Leo s. For July it s the 28, site to be determined next meeting. Chinese Supper Night Chapter members meet at The Great Dragon in Decorah for an evening great food, great socializing and an around great time. Our monthly eat out is working out alright. 2 Secretary s Report/Chapter Minutes Director Jim Hyde called the meeting to order at 7:27 with 21 members present. Secretary: Motion to approve Lynn, Seconded, Kay Minutes approved Treasurer: Ending balance Membership Officers Report: 58 Members, with a lot to enter new members attending tonight. Terry and Cathy Link, Sharm and Mary Samuelson, and Kevin and Joanne Schmidt. WELCOME to the Chapter! Activities: Pizza Night Saturday night May 12 th TJ s Pizza, Clermont. 6:00 PM. Chinese Dinner Great Dragon Decorah April 21 st. 7:00PM. May 20 th Membership ride. Tentatively meet at Waukon Kwik Star, leave at 11:00. May change watch newsletter. Ride for life June 3 rd watch newsletter for times and details. Chapter Liaison: Open House went well; Randy Moore Westgate won the $1,000 shopping spree. Daryl will bring a card to the Chinese Supper for Arlin Straylo. He passed away recently, He was always at HOG rally s wearing his buffalo horned helmet. LOH Officer s Report: Camp Courageous ride. April 29 th. Meet Independence Go America (right by the 20 interchange) Meet at 9:00. Ride at 9:30. $5.00 per bike. Omelet breakfast being served. All proceeds go to Camp Courageous. If bad weather we will be taking cars. Road Captains Report: Spring membership ride May 20 th. Meeting Kwik Start Waukon. Will be a surprise ride, not sure on all the details yet. RIDE FOR Life June 3 rd Watch newsletter for details. Ride to the Rock. 2 day ride to Western Iowa. Sept. 15&16. More details to follow. Safety Officer: Nothing to report Editors Report: Keep sending the stories! Public Relations: Absent Assistant Director: Out of wheel chair and getting ready to ride. Guest speaker from Cedar River Chapter from Charles City. Ed Olsen reported on the up coming state HOG rally. $35.00 registration includes t-shirt and pin. Must be postmarked by April 26 th. Starts Thursday night with a kick off party at the dealer with a band. Bands both Friday and Saturday nights. Will run shuttle from Bands to Hotels, and camp grounds. Poker and Observation runs. Keep checking on rooms, some may open up. Still room in the camp ground. If you plan to attend please sign up to help. They still need volunteers. Directors Report: Please report mileage to Jim, as of March 1 st, for contest. Prizes will be awarded at our X-mas Party. National HOG rally, leaving Aug. 21 st, two days to go to Knoxville. 3days there. 2days coming home. Registration opens April 4 th. The next Pizza nights will be May12th, and June 30 th, July 28 th. Need a Pizza place for July. Any ideas? Dealer stamp ride June 9 th. Meet in Edgewood at 10:00 AM Casey s. All welcome even if you are not going to the state HOG rally. 8 th annual Rockton Chicken Run. Meet at Monona Kwik Star at 9:30, ride at 10:00. Chapter Iron Butt ride. Iowa Saddle Sore Ride Circumvent the state of Iowa, in 24 hours. Lacrosse chapter rides, Flood run April 21 st, Big Bikes for Little tikes May 21 st. MDA ride Labor Day weekend. Report from the floor: Kay mentioned the POT training that Ron and she had attended. They stressed releases for non members and members alike. Kids have to have parents sign release not grandparents. 4 Wind Chill Info from Myrna This Wind Chill Chart is provided to help determine how cold you will feel on a motorcycle even in warm temperatures with a slight breeze. The wind chill factor is a measure of how fast heat is being removed from your body. For example, if the air temperature is 40 degrees and you are riding at 20 miles per hour, it feels the same as 20 degrees with no speed at all. Cooling Power of Wind Expressed as "Equivalent Chill Temperature" Riding Speed MPH Temperature (degrees F) Equivalent Chill Temperature Little Danger Increasing Danger!!! (Flesh may freeze within 1 min.) You can see from the above chart that proper clothing is essential for safety and comfort while cruising down the highway. (Note: Winds above 40 mph have little additional effect)
