We enjoy more rides locally because going north is a bit nippy. Our friends from back East are visiting so we can renew old friendships and tell them stories of the past summer. The holidays will soon be in the past so let s get out and ride. We are going to push the ride and have fun factor to extremes this year. There will be new rides and new venues. We would also like old and new members alike to give us ideas of where and what they would like to do. Everyone has a favorite ride and a favorite dining spot. So share and let us know! The more different spots we find the better the fun factor. Our new board is ready and willing to make things happen this year. Feel free to approach us anytime. 2 Superstition H.O.G. E-Newsletter Page 2 Arizona State H.O.G. Rally- "Riding the West on the H.O.G. Express" Cost is$37 for H.O.G members and $42 for guests. Children under12 are free. A Message from Bob I know it seems like a long way away, but we all know how fast time travels when you re out riding and having fun. So don t wait, mark your calendars now for the Arizona State H.O.G. Rally for May 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd, This year s rally will be in Tucson again. You can come out for all three days or for as much as you want. Pre-registration will guarantee you all the goodies. The Hotel Arizona will be the Host hotel again. They did a great job for us last year and all the activities are close by. They also have secured inside parking. Escorted rides leave the hotel several times during the day on Friday and Saturday morning. They will take you all around the Tucson attractions. The bike games are indoors in the coliseum on Saturday. Venders and restaurants are all close by. 1. Pre-register on line before March 13, 2008 at azstatehogrally.com. For those of you who do not have access to the internet I will have forms to fill out and mail in at the dealer. They are not available yet but will be soon. 2. Cost is $37.00 for H.O.G. members and $42.00 for guests. Children under 12 are free. 3. Make your hotel registration at the Hotel Arizona by calling It s a very nice hotel and rooms are $74.00 a night. Tell them you are with HOG. The hotel s address is 181 W. Broadway Tucson Az Be a part of the rally and spend a couple of hours volunteering for one of the events. We had a good turn out last year. Let s see if we can even do better this year. 3 The Historian s Page Page H.O.G. Pen Recap from the Chapter Historian Monday December 31, another year gone but not forgotten was a Ride and Have Fun year for the Superstition H.O.G. Chapter. We had our weekly Sunday and Wednesday Impromptu Rides and our Saturday and Friday Night Dinner Rides. In January we had the White Elephant Party and meet the members at the Monastery. In February we rode in the Lost Dutchman Parade and who can forget Mike doing wheelies. In March we saw Wild HOGS (what a great time that was), Arizona Bike Week and the Discovery and UMFF Rides along with Cyclefest and Bad Company, Tombstone overnight, and the Blanket of Hope Run. In April we had the Road Captains breakfast at Canyon Lake, the Blessing of the Bikes with the Black Sheep and the Celebration of Life Ride (to ride for our fallen members) and the Easter Ride. As it warmed up in May we rode to Tucson for the Arizona State H.O.G. Rally. In July we had our first Chapter Wedding at SHD (Mark and Theresa Ann). In August we celebrated our 5 th Anniversary with a Hawaiian Luau. In September we had our overnighter to Laughlin (great success). Then in October we had our Annual Chili Challenge and raised money for the Blanket of Hope, CAAFA and Project Help. In November we had our turkey leftovers and fed our friends of H.O.G. (the employees at SHD), and we did Birds on Bikes. In December we had our 5 th Anniversary Holiday Party and did the UMFF Toy Run and the Angel tree at SHD. We are lucky to have with us Bob Block, Jesse, Ranger Ed, Larry and Herb whom all had bike mishaps in All we can say is thank you Lord, for looking out for them. SHD had a great number of events in which the Chapter participated. To name a few, Ladies Night, Men s Night, Hula Days, Pet Day, April Open House, February All Ladies Ride, the Ultimate Garage, October Rumble for the Cure and BAD Ride. All the HOG Dogs we ate on every third Saturday and all the weekly Bike Nights. It was a great year and I would like to thank everyone who sent me pictures and articles for the H.O.G. Pen is going to be an even better year. 4 Diary of a Motorcycle Adventure Page 4 Start date August 21, 2007 Finish date Sept 15, Part 3 - Day 21 to 26 -this is the final installment in a three part series with highlights on the 6000 mile road trip our Head Road Captain John Cat and Jan took this past summer. ed. Day 21 Blessed again!!! Another beautiful day!! Off to Crazy Horse Memorial Custer State Park The Wildlife Loop Iron Mt. Road and MT. Rushmore in that order This is the land where the buffalo roam!!! And we see hundreds of them close to the road and in the meadows This is migration time and round up for them real cowboys on horses moving the herds In Custer Park the buffalo are taken care of by the park The herd is over 3500 strong you have got to find the time to ride here!! Just awesome!! And at night back to Crazy Horse for the laser light show on the mountain fantastic!!! Day 22 A travel day, but first a short ride thru part of Custer State Park and then thru Wind Cave National Park They should change the name of this park to Prairie Dog NP Prairie dogs for a good 10 miles on both sides of the road!!! Now for a ride thru Wyoming on a long road called Rte 85 south finally after a couple of hundred miles of ranch and farms we arrive in Fort Collins, CO for a really cool place to eat try Sanford s Day 23 Have you heard of Rocky MT. National Park? It is a beautiful place you should have as a destination It is located between Estes Park and Grand Lake Colorado spectacular sights you ride in the alpine tundra for 10 miles above 11,000ft elevation The elk had migrated down to lower elevation due to the winter weather coming so they hid on us real good some great riding in Colorado A treat of a ride is on Interstate 70 between exits 133 and 119. Its Glenwood Canyon the road is a modern engineering feat another road to have to add to your list to travel now in Glenwood Springs, CO. Day 24 We are on our way to Durango, Co today is mountain pass day The first pass we go thru is McLure Pass in the Routt National Forest some 8500 ft elevation curves and great scenery and even wine country in Colorado This was on our way to the Million Dollar Hwy the story of how the highway came about its name as told by a local in Silverton goes like this The road was financed by an eccentric road builder when blasting the mountain from Ouray to Silverton they came across a couple of gold veins The builder supposedly just covered them with the roadway therefore creating its name and the gold is said to still be there Questionable to me!!! The road from Ouray South the Uncompahgre National Forest waterfalls roads edges that are sheer cliffs Thru aspen and pine forest along rivers I love this road!!! Did I forget to tell you no guardrails!! Rte 550 South I ve been on this road 3 times in the past 4 months and 5 times in the last 3 years Jan has been on this road in both directions now and really has enjoyed its beauty!!! She constantly takes pictures from the backseat This is the first time I haven t seen snow on the surrounding peaks the trees are starting to change color I can t imagine how spectacular it will look like in a couple of weeks This road is about 80 miles long and has about all one s eyes can see and then some and don t take your eyes off the road for too long!!! First thru Red Mountain Pass then thru Molas Pass and finally Coal Bank Pass 2 well above 10,000ft and one above 11,000ft elevation!!! Each pass has a different degree of negotiating curves!! Come here and take your time I must repeat fantastic road!! Spectacular riding!!! Day 25 We leave Durango and take Rte 160 West thru Four Corners you know 4 states touch corners to Arizona and Rte 191 south thru the Apache Navajo Nation the first 50 miles on 191 South are beautiful It definitely compares in beauty to Monument Valley then thru farmland And then we stop for a night in Holbrook, AZ. Day 26 Going home!! Rte 77 South to Rte 377 Southwest to Rte 260 West to Rte 87 South the Beeline to the Bush Hwy and home at last. Total round trip mileage 5983 miles Five thousand, nine hundred, eighty three miles *******HAPPY TRAILS******* JAN & JOHN C.
