1 Chapter Newsletter for APR 2010 Est Vol. # December Directors Report Spring is here and Ronnie is already 300 miles ahead of me There have been some outstanding days but work has a way of interfering with my personal life. A good hard rain would be nice to wash away the sandy corners. Ronnie bought me heated pants and jacket liners and boy does that make riding nice when Mother Nature isn t able to warm up the day. I would recommend them to anyone who wants to extend their riding season.. Don t forget to renew your chapter membership (12.00 individual or18.00 family) and be ready to ride and have fun in Secretary s Report/Chapter Minutes Secretary s Report / Chapter Minutes March 12 th, 2010 Call to Order Director Kay Brewster called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM with 19 members present. Secretary Motion to approve the February minutes as printed in the newsletter. Motion made by Tobey W. seconded by Gary Gissel. Motion carried. Assistant Director Myrna updated Chapter on Women s Ride to Milwaukee May 22/23. They will be setting up a group ride. If interested contact Myrna. This ride is open to both men and women. Treasurer Randy Ellis gave the Treasurer s report with a balance of $ Membership Officer Randy Ellis reported that we have 81 current members with 50 paid for upcoming year. Dues are due now after April 30 only current chapter members will receive newsletter. Activities Officer Mar. 20 th Pizza Ranch Decorah, 6:00p.m. April 9/10 P.O.T. training Milwaukee April 25 th Camp Courageous Ride, Meet at Gissel s (902 Rebecca Court) Independence at 9:00 a.m. Will ride rain or shine with 4 wheels if needed. Those interested in riding together to Independence, contact Sandy Evanson. Mileage contest start now. To enter, give Daryl or Sandy starting mileage. See newsletter for calendar of events. Liaison Kerry Mahr from Waukon HD talked to chapter regarding Garage Party March 25 th at Waukon HD. This is Ladies Only Event. Daryl informed chapter each month Waukon HD draws one

2 address to win a $25 gift certificate. Waukon HD is having their annual Spring Open House March 27 th. LOH Nothing to report Head Road Captain Nothing to report. Safety Steve Trumblee brought Group Riding Video for chapter to watch. Schedules for Motorcycle Safety Courses at NICC at Calmar available at Waukon HD. Editor Reminder to send pictures and articles for newsletter. Director: Kay informed chapter of Patriotic Project for carrying American Flag through the lower 48 states. They are looking for a volunteer to Take flag from Waukon HD to Madison, Wisc. Ron Brewster volunteered. Discussed Primary Officer Training in Milwaukee April 9/10. Discussed Point System for participation in Chapter. Anyone interested in booking rooms at Isle of Capri in Waterloo for State HOG Rally may contact Tobey Wiedemann or call there direct or Door Prize won by Jo Wiedemann. Meeting adjourned at 8:31 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jan Ellis, Secretary 2010 Patriot Tour Ron Brewster The Nation of Patriots organization is putting together a ride to pass the American flag through the lower 48 states in 100 days. This is in honor of all the families of wounded veterans. The flag will travel once a day from point one city to the next, stay over night and then be carried to its next destination. The flag will be arriving in Waukon HD on Aug 31. On Sept 1 we will be taking it to Capitol City HD in Madison, Wisconsin The flag will be starting at Milwaukee HD on May 28 and end in Milwaukee HD on Sept 3. Anyone interested in riding with me from Waukon HD to Capitol City HD, please let me know. So far Steve Trumblee, Gary Gissel, and Jim Hyde have indicated they would like to go on the ride. I will be there Aug 31 to get the flag and will leave Waukon HD Sept 1 about 9:30am. You can me at ronald344@centurytel.net. Trip of a lifetime provided by HD Vic Kane Saturday 7/26/08 Jean and I are meeting Randy and Jan Ellis for the start of a much anticipated vacation. We are set to cross out more items from our bucket list. The HD heated vest is on as the weather is cool and this is a day to enjoy scenery while putting down miles. We enjoy the view of the Missouri river as we cross over into the heat and the western landscape. We end the day in Murdo, South Dakota Sunday 7/27/08 Today is another mileage day. We stop at the Sturgis HD for the start of dealer pin and shirt collecting for the trip. We are setting up for the next day s ride over Beartooth into Yellowstone National Park. This day starts what becomes a theme for the ride. A blaze orange road sign stating MOTORCYCLES USE EXTREME CAUTION! LOOSE

3 GRAVEL! We take an alternate route as the entire road is gone. This adds a 40 mile detour to an already hot trip. We end the day in Billings, Montana Monday 7/28/08 We visit the Billings HD then head for Red Lodge for breakfast and to visit their HD store. The weather is cool so on with the vest. Beartooth Pass is awesome as usual. We stop at the overlook and then go over the top with Yellowstone National Park as our destination. At the NE entrance we encounter our theme sign. The road to the entrance is gone and we have to ride on dirt & gravel. Jean told Randy to pick a path and make sure it was the right one, she was right behind him. We walk the boardwalks, stop at geysers, mud pots & hot springs. It s amazing that we are walking on a giant volcano. We arrive within minutes of Old Faithful erupting. What a time saver! Then we proceed to get stopped in traffic leaving the park as someone sees a chipmunk. Must be City folk! Randy has to have a DQ after that! We ended the day in West Yellowstone, Montana Tuesday 7/29/08 It is another mileage day as we are heading to setup a trip through Glacier tomorrow. This morning it is in the 40s. So on again with the vest and then I discover I have lost my gloves. I thought I would freeze, and then we pull over and all pile on more clothes. Once again the theme sign appears as we bounce across rocky cut outs in the highway. We visit the Belgrade HD picking up a pin and tee-shirt. We get a room at the Big Sky hotel finding that the owners are Ames, Iowa transplants. We stop at the local watering hole to re-hydrate. We end the day in Chouto, Montana. Wednesday 7/30/08 Glacier National Park the genesis for the trip is the days destination. We encounter strong side winds but are greeted by a rainbow across the road right into the park. We head into the park, the wind subsides and the beauty of Glacier opens before us. The water color and mountain views are a must see. Of course we encounter our theme sign! Nothing like riding over wet Mud at 8,000 foot. I spy the Glacier so I can mark that off the bucket list! We leave the park and find our theme sign again as there is no road. Taking the flag women s advice, after Randy gets her a drink out of her cooler, we turn around! We visit the Kalispell HD. We end the day in Kalispell, Montana. Thursday 7/31/08 We talk to a gentleman from Great Britain who is riding to Sturgis. He describes the beauty he has ridden through in the USA as bringing him to the point of tears. Makes one appreciate what we truly have here. Today is exciting as we are continuing are adventure yet sad day as we part company with our riding companions. They are shifting back to Sturgis as we are off to check off more bucket list items. We take Highway 12 west where our theme sign shows up again. We were diverted down a road, with Semis and RVs that turns into 12 miles of large loose gravel. (which about brought us to tears) Dust so thick you could hardly see except for the flashes of your life passing before your eyes. We added that to the bucket list and checked it off never wanting to do it again! We stop at an overlook close to our destination of the Lewiston, Idaho HD. We discover a gem of a road designed to allow cars of the day to travel at top speed 30 mph in the curves. We wind down it to the HD shop. We then cross into the state of Washington never seeing any potato fields in Idaho. The stop for the evening is a trip to Kennewick HD dealership. We end the day in Kennewick, Washington. Friday 8/1/08 We leave using Interstate 82 entering the state of Oregon onto Interstate 84 sacrificing back roads to cut some time. We discover it is very scenic as the Colombia River runs on one side and the Cascade Mountains the other. Suddenly the bottom of Mount Hood appears as the top is shrouded in clouds. We discover it is actually rain as we ascend upwards. Our first rain of the trip follows us to the other side of Portland. We take Highway 6 to our next bucket list item the coast road Highway 101! We head south amazed at the awesome view from this road to the rugged shores of the Pacific Ocean. We find an older motel to stop for the night. The ocean is a short walk from our room so we head down the beach stepping into the Pacific Ocean. Strike off another item from the list. We head to town stopping at the Drift in Café where we enjoy live music, excellent food and great conversation with the bartender. We return in time to watch the sun set into the ocean. We end the day in Waldport, Oregon Saturday 8/2/08 We watch the morning sun highlighting the waves breaking upon the shore. Time is now standing still; watches have been removed, timetables forgotten. We cannot think of the last time we have felt this free! We drift along surprised to see the shoreline change from rugged rocky shores to large sand dunes. We stop at the Coos Bay HD and chat with some fellow riders. We are headed to the Redwoods the number one item on my bucket list. We stop in Crescent, California at the Redwoods Visitor Center. They tell us where to go to see old growth redwoods. WOW, is an understatement! It is like being in Jurassic Park. How do you describe something that has lived lifetimes before you and hopefully lifetimes after you? A tree that is so large you are standing in its root ball! We force ourselves to leave and head south looking for Eureka, HD. We end the day in Eureka, California. Sunday 8/3/08 Today we are headed to Reno taking Highway 299 to 44. It is a ridge line winding through the mountains. We see several fire camps and burned out areas. We are shocked at how dry everything is and finally understand why they have so many fires here. We come upon Lassen Volcanic National Park opting for the route through the park. It has some great views at 8,500 ft. The day is ended close to the Reno HD as I hope to slip in and get a new rear tire tomorrow. We end the day in Reno, Nevada

4 Monday 8/4/08 Reno HD is no exception to our experience with Harley shops across the US. Even without prior notice they have us back on the road in less than two hours. Our destination is Salt Lake City. Today is a mileage day with scenery that just seems to replay itself over and over. We arrive on the edge of the salt flats and decide it is late and we will cross in the morning. We end the day in Wendover, Utah. Tuesday 8/5/08 We start out early watching the sun rise as we ride across the salt flats. I am surprised to find water and see how smooth it is like a mirror. It smells bad and you can see the salt deposits on posts in the water. On the other side of the flats we stop for gas. We are asked by a gentleman what part of Fayette County Iowa we are from. We find out he is originally from West Union. We drive by the Great Salt Lake skirting around Salt Lake City. The scenery changes back from the starkness of the salt flats. Today s destination is Beers HD in Vernal, Utah. This will require us to ride all the way across Utah. Upon arrival we find Beers is a small HD shop. We also find that Vernal is home to the National Dinosaur Monument. So we venture to the monument and visit the local museum. It is host to lots of fossils and statues of dinosaurs. This is a pleasant surprise as I have been collecting National Park pins as well. We head north towards Interstate 80. We leave follow up and out of what is called the Flaming Gorge road. It is awesome! You see over a million years of time in the various layers of rock shoved to the surface. Some a red color I am sure that leads to its name. We end up out on a plateau where you can see off both sides. We ended the day in Rock Springs, Wyoming Wednesday 8/6/08 We leave on interstate 80 stopping at the Laramie, Rock Springs and Cheyenne HD for more pins and shirts. Today is a mileage day as we are heading home. We end the day in North Platt, Nebraska Thursday 8/7/08 We are pushing home today. We stop at the Lincoln HD. Once we enter into Iowa we drop off the interstate and take back roads. Nothing like riding through the farm fields of Iowa. We finally arrive home. We have visited 11 states, 13 HDs and rode 5,288 miles of scenic wonders. Vic Kane Linda s Chinese Dinner Ride
