1 Goldwing Road Riders Association Chapter AZ-G, Green Valley, AZ Chapter Director: Chuck Liberty September 2012 Meets 8 AM, second Saturday of the month except June thru August at the Cow Palace Restaurant, South I 19, Exit 48, Amado, AZ Chapter Directors Corner: - Chuck and Kris Liberty September is the time of year those of us that live in Southern AZ year round look for. Yes, the temperatures can still be higher than we want but we know the real good motorcycle riding weather is right around the corner. So with that happening that also means our friends will start trickling back into this part of the country. Yes we know that some will not return until December, but we can start looking forward to seeing all of them soon. There have been some ideas for trips kicked around but the only one that is planned at this time is the trip to San Diego leaving from Yuma right after the District Convention on October 28 th mid-day. Dennie and Karen Long have been working on this and will share their plans with us as soon as they have them finalized. Kris and I are in the preliminary stages of planning another ride to Las Vegas. On last year s visit, Caesars Palace was advertising Shania Twain as performing there next year (2013) so we thought we would go. More on that later. Speaking of the District Convention, if you have plans on attending you need to get your Convention and hotel registrations taking care of. Last count from Bill Trask (as of 8/16), pre-registration for the convention was ahead of last year s pace and room availability (at the GWRRA rate) at the host hotel was approx 40 rooms. When calling be sure and let them know you are with GWRRA and will be there for the convention. Convention Registration form is at the back of this newsletter. Jimmy Collins and Candy Shirley have been busy working on the convention for quite a while and I am sure there will be plenty to see and do. Safety Educators Corner: - Carl and Sherryll Welch Personal Disaster Avoidance When we go to buy a new vehicle, at least in the back of our mind we consider the safety of the vehicle. Some study buyer guides to make sure of it safety features and make sure it has a high safety rating. Not every time we get into that vehicle do we expect to have an accident but should it happen we want to have the best chance of survival. When we go to bed at night we lock our doors. Not because we know someone in going to try to break in, but should they, the lock may prevent it or the noise may alert us to be able to protect ourselves. When we are on the motorcycle and an animal runs out in front of us, an alligator tire tread pops out from under the car in front of us, unexpected gravel in the turn in front of us forces us down or puts us down, there is not enough time to get the proper riding gear out of our saddle bags and put it on to protect us. We may be good at checking the safety of the motorcycle; (tires, breaks, mirrors, steering, etc.) but before we turn on the ignition, take one last check and look at ourselves for proper dress/gear and attitude for our protection and survival. Yes! Sometimes the proper dress/gear is uncomfortable. It is not near as bad as the road rash, ground off bones, plates in your head or on the real down side, your family members having a funeral for you. The motorcycles are to ride for fun and enjoyment. Not a conveyance to pain and agony for you or your family for the years to come. Ride Safe, Smart and Enjoy. This Not This Chapter Store: - Kris Liberty Don t forget that your Chapter G Store offers one stop shopping for most of your chapter attire. I carry patches for vests, caps, vest chains, and gecko pins (when I find them for sale). We use J&J Monogram for our long-sleeve and short- sleeve chapter shirts, sweatshirts, and caps. I purchase the ladies yellow puffy caps from Shady Lady in Tombstone. I have a local source for producing the name tags. The only item you need to purchase directly is your vest (Jerry s Uniforms on Speedway). I will gladly sew your patches on your vest if you want. When I order shirts, sweatshirts or caps from J&J, it takes about 30 days to receive; so if you want a chapter sweatshirt, better get it ordered soon. It may be too hot now, but it won t be long until you will want that sweatshirt on a ride. If you haven t seen our Store section on the Chapter G website, please take a minute to visit. 2 Past Events: Region F WINGO... It was a lot of fun! When I started thinking about the Region F convention coming up Memorial Day weekend, 2012, I thought it might be fun to play WINGO (which is really Bingo). After talking with Anita and Kerry, they gave me the go ahead to plan and get supplies as needed. We decided to add to the FUN with WINGO wardrobe, as seen in the picture. Kris Liberty and my wife Karen designed the vests and we added hats, ties, and WINGO bling. We were worried as being our first time, would people really want to play. We were pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed at the response we got. WINGO was to start at 4:30pm. I opened the doors at 4pm to see people waiting outside the room. The room filled immediately to the point that I had to ask Chuck Liberty to help me find more tables and chairs. Even after that we had to turn people away as the capacity of the room was met. After a short detailed description on how to play and that the B s were W s, we were ready to go. To be eligible to win you had to holler WINGO. We played 6 games and gave prizes to the winners. For those of you that didn t get to play this year, don t worry, I have been informed next year we will have a bigger room. So mark your calendars and keep watching the Region F website for updates. Thanks The WINGO Staff THE LIBERTY SUMMER VACATION Spending time away from the long hot summer of Tucson is always up for discussion at our house, usually starting in January! It is a given that it will include riding the motorcycle, heading north to cooler temperatures and being gone at least 10 days. Our plans this summer started by attending the Regional GWRRA Convention in St. George, Utah at the end of May. Chapter G had a nice turnout, which always adds to the fun. We got away for two rides around the area with Denny and Karen Long, including a stop for homemade pie and the always obligatory stops at the local Dairy Queen. From St. George, we rode north to Kalispell, Montana to spend a few days riding. We were hoping to ride through Glacier National Park, but it was still closed because of snow.can you believe that! From there we rode over to Libby, Montana and spent a couple of days with Nelson and Jenny Bland, for more riding time in the beautiful mountains around Libby. The final leg of our summer trip was over to Oregon and down the Pacific Coast Highway to south of San Francisco. There just isn t much prettier scenery than the coast highway, especially when it includes indulging in clam chowder almost every day! We are not waiting until January to plan our Summer of 13 Summer Trip.another trip to Alaska, leaving in mid- June. We are always looking for partners when we head for Alaska, so talk to Wagon Master Chuck if you are interested Trip The Blands In June, Nelson rode from MT to WV; Jenny traveled with our son-in-law and grandson. We encountered the worst WV storm that we have ever seen. After the storm, there were approximately 850,000 people without electricity. Even 12 days later as we left WV there were still about 40,000 without electricity. After visiting with Nelson s 92 year old mother, my family and Jenny s family we were ready to hit the road. On July 11, 2012 we rode through PA and into NY. Early afternoon, we ran into rain and stopped for the night. Next day saw us leaving NY, riding across VT and NH into the edge of ME. We stopped in Bar Harbor, ME and went on a whale-watching cruise. We were about 30 miles out and saw some humpback and finback whales. After a good night s sleep, we spent most of the next day in Acadia National Park before traveling on to Bangor, ME for the night. The following day we crossed over into NB, Canada and spent the night at a bed-and-breakfast in Moncton, NB. On July 16, we were in Nova Scotia and planned to ride the Cabot Trail. We stopped at the only single malt producing distillery in North America. Leaving the Glenora District we started up the west side of the Cabot Trail. At Chiticamp, we encountered a hard rain at the same time we arrived at a renowned rug museum. The rugs on display were interesting and beautiful. Since it was still raining, we decided to go back south and over to Baddeck to spend the night. The next day Volume V, Issue III Page 2 of 6

3 we headed up the Cabot Trail on the east side and had a great day of riding with beautiful scenery. We again spent the night in Baddeck and attended a Celtic music concert that evening. We rode across the bridge to Prince Edward Island on the 18 th and spent the night on the island at a bedand-breakfast. Of course, the next day we paid a $17.50 toll to leave the island. Then it was on to Quebec. We rode around Montreal and Ottawa and into Ontario. July 21 st we crossed back into the USA at Sault Ste. Marie a few feet at a time in 90 degree heat. We traveled around the southern border of Lake Superior until crossing back into Manitoba, Canada. We rode through southern Manitoba and into Saskatchewan then dropped south into ND and then west to Glendive and found a motel just before a downpour. We arrived in Bozeman on the 25 th of July for the MT GWRRA Convention. It was a great convention and we were rested and ready for the ride on home on the 29 th. Total mileage was 8686 and one of the best parts was it was a trouble-free Goldwing adventure. 4 DISTRICT DIRECTOR S CORNER SEPTEMBER 2012 Bill & Susan Trask, GWRRA Arizona District Directors TAKE THE 10:26 TO YUMA You ll Love it! From October 26 to 28, 2012 we ll be taking the 10:26 to Yuma for the Arizona District Convention & Rally. Here you will find 400+ fellow Gold Wing friends, a great variety of Vendors, dozens of seminars, free entertainment, great prizes, the awesome routines of the Arizona and California Drill teams, a fun Amazing Team Challenge course, ice cream and other socials, a Western drama, the Western dress contest, games, rides, and so much to fit into a 2-day event we can hardly stop talking about it..! Here are some of the things you might do at Yuma October 26-28: 1. Couples & Individuals of the Year just before Opening on Friday. 2. Opening ceremonies a patriotic meeting of the people, the place and the events that will happen. 3. An ice cream social outside right after Opening. 4. A Western drama to represent the old west in Yuma; during the ice cream social. 5. Vendors with all the safety chrome you ll ever need; and some great deals on clothing, insurance, advice, jewelry, helmets, tires, and even legal advice. 6. Local rides take the time to ride and see the awesome places in the Yuma area (Friday or Saturday). 7. Western Theme Dress Contest if you are dressed western, you might win a DQ gift card or other prizes. 8. Friday night will be our Bike Light Run, combining a parade and light show through the city of Yuma. 9. Seminars attend a Rider Ed seminar (Team Riding, Co-Rider) and/or some fun ones (how to pack or how to have fun in GWRRA). Friday and Saturday. 10. Door prizes and Grand prizes galore including at least several sets of tires cash drawings every day, last year we gave away over $ Watch the incredible riding talents of the Arizona and California Drill Teams on Saturday morning. 13. Participate in the Amazing Team Challenge on Saturday and test your skills with your friends. 14. Attend the free concert in the park at Yuma Landing, just below the hotel. 15. Attend the dinner on Saturday and witness the prizes, talks and friendliness of GWRRA. 16. Later Saturday is the Newly Wing Game, a fun event with members involved have a laugh and enjoy. 17. Early Sunday morning religious services are planned. 18. Sunday morning is the Masters Breakfast for those at Level III or higher in the Rider Education program. 19. 5 To modify a Beatle s tune: And in the end, the fun you take is equal to the fun you make. Come out with the idea of enjoying the day or weekend and you ll have a great time. Volunteer to help out and you ll meet many new friends and walk away feeling pretty good about yourself. We hope you ll be there. See the Registration information and form at Remember. The Next Ride is Always the Best One We re Going to San Diego, CA! Yup, that s right! After the GWRRA AZ District Convention in Yuma (October 28 th right after Closing Ceremonies), we are heading to SAN DIEGO on our motorcycles! So why don t you come along and join us! We will be staying at the LaQuinta Hotel in Mission Valley, I reserved 12 rooms. You need to call the hotel before October 8 th to make your reservation for the nights of October 28 th and 29th. The group rate of $74.00 per room plus tax. Ask for the GWWRA Goldwing Road Riders Association promo code when calling. Do not let them send you to the national reservation desk. We will leave San Diego mid day on the 30 th and spend the night in Yuma on the way back home. On Monday morning we will ride out to CABRILLO POINT for picture taking. Capture our bikes with the ocean as back drop. Steve Edington has agreed to lead a trip for us around the bay for some sightseeing. Then we will head back to the hotel and change into some different clothes and head over to the trolley for our ride downtown. Make sure you wear your walking shoes though. We will divide up this time for those who would like to take the USS MIDWAY MUSEUM tour ($15 seniors 62+) or just want to do some shopping. In the afternoon we will tour San Diego s harbor. Cost for the 2 hour tour is $25.00 per person. Tour starts at 3pm. Arrive ½ hour prior to leaving. Full Bay Tour: Our deluxe tour covers it all: Harbor and Shelter Islands, Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument, North Island Naval Air Station, the Submarine Base, as well as the Coronado Bridge, and much more.
