2 Director s Corner Salem HOG Chapter Elections It is that time again. We will be accepting nominations for the 2008 officers at our October and November meeting. The elections will take place in December, with the new officers taking over at half-time of the December meeting. A change in our election process took place 2 years ago. The positions are two year commitments and only a portion of the board is elected each year. This allows for consistency as well as always having experienced board members available for consultation. This year, the following board members (chapter officers) are open for election: Director Asst. Director Safety Officer Webmaster Photographer Secretary The following positions will continue for the 2008 year: Historian, Treasurer, Senior Rd. Captain, Membership, Newsletter Editor, Activities director. In the wind.. Jane Allen, Director 2007 Know Your Board Member You know that I am a man of very few words so don t expect a very long bio. I bought my first bike in 1974, it was a Suzuki Enduro and I learned the advantage of wearing a helmet very early even tho I would like to have the freedom of choice. We lived on a hill with a gravel road and the first time I convinced my wife to ride with me we started out uphill and when I shifted to second gear I gave it a little too much throttle and the front end came up and my wife landed in the middle of the road (no sissy bar). She politely informed me that I could ride my bike all I wanted but she was going to stick to riding horses! I bought my first Harley (97 Sportster Hugger) about 6 years ago and have over 93,000 miles on it now. Was considering joining a few groups and I went on several Poker Runs and ran into Karla at several. She was so friendly and convinced me to join Salemhog. Have made a lot of friends within the group. I was nominated as Photographer 3 years ago and took a lot of photos and a couple of years ago Kevin resigned as webmaster and I was asked to assume the role which I enjoy doing. Bill

11 Can you here me now? It s not hard in this country to lose your hearing. In the 60 s everyone blamed it on the Vietnam war. I had two brothers there and indeed they lost a substantial amount of hearing while in the service. I however was younger and missed the draft - but not the ability to lose over half my hearing. Playing in bands and attending an average of two concerts a week during my 20 s did irreparable damage to my ears and audiologists want to put me in the Smithsonian when I die because many of my symptoms amaze them. I have perfect pitch, but actually hear notes differently depending on which ear they are entering. Due to a correctional ability in my brain it all works out as long as I can hear the note coming into each ear. My brain also recreates lost frequencies in music as long as it has enough to go on on either side of the range. But, when it comes to the human voice this is surely not the case. Then there s the traffic differential. The frequency that traffic din is at is one that I hear well. The frequency range of the human voice is another story as I only hear it half as well. Which basically means my brain processes traffic at twice the level of sound as I hear the human voice! And what about high pitched sounds like birds? Forget it. Luckily I can still see them and as I age they become more interesting to me, but only visually unfortunately. Basically my hearing is pretty screwed up and I live with the handicap for which there is no cure and no insurance coverage. If you re riding a motorcycle and not protecting your ears with proper plugs you ll be on the road to my world in no time. Constant wind turbulence around your helmet and the general flow of traffic is enough to get you started. If you ve ever driven on I5 under the convention center, or through on I90 the Mercer tunnel at rush hour with a half helmet on you are asking for real trouble. The sound level in those spots is so loud it s one that can easily tilt your equilibrium and potentially cause you to lose balance along with a percentage of hearing. Rule of the thumb is that anything over 65 decibels for more than just a couple of minutes will begin to tear Safety Article away at your hearing ability. Most Americans have already had plenty of this battering and many are already 25% deaf or better just from everyday life in the city. The solution is simple. No matter how much hearing you have left, beam yourself over to the nearest drug store and invest in a few sets of plugs. Three bucks gets you about 25 pair when you buy them in bulk. Use them each time you ride and you ll be doing yourself a great service. Go through my handbag and riding jacket and you ll find the sum of no less than 5 sets of earplugs. The sets I my handbags I use when flying or attending an occasional concert, the ones in the jacket are for riding. Look for 20 decibel protection on the the package or better. The higher the number the more appealing they are to me. There is no law against using ear protection when operating a motor vehicle in the state of Washington. The fact is, once you put your plugs in, you will be able to hear most of the same sounds you would hear if you were driving a car with the windows rolled up. Your visual perception will be stronger because your senses won t be processing so much audio information. It s really quite a treat once you get your plugs in and start riding and you will no doubt be able to ride longer because you ll be less tired mentally. I call it tune out and turn on. Here s a little etiquette for when you re riding with someone else. Speaking to each other with helmets and earplugs on offers you little or no chance to get your point across. If you need to speak to other person about something important set up a hand signal system for requesting a stop. Once you stop, get your helmets off, your plugs out and then speak. Of coarse you ll try communicating with the plugs in and the helmets on and I ll be sitting across the street watching your frustration, but I won t hear a thing. TM/July 99 Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up... do no mix these up. 11

12 Salishack and Back Poker Run The Freeloader Tavern on Lancaster in Salem sponsored this ride. About 35 bikes and cars showed up at 9:00am, and checked in. We received a bag of goodies, which included a glass, bottle opener, small chain w/bud. thing hanging down, also big chain w/a big Bud. thing hanging down, lip balm, can holder and a t-shirt. You did have to pre-register to get the correct size t-shirt. After drawing our card---and this was a different spin on things-you kept your card and wrote your name on it and took it along with you. We headed out in small groups to Fort Hill, where we drew another card, once again taking the card with us. It was all very leisurely and everyone enjoyed visiting. It was rather different with 2 and 4 wheelers together-- and then there were the oddballs with 3 wheels!! Our next stop was the Salishack Tavern by Salishan. Another card there, and then they provided lunch for us, coleslaw, corn on the cob, rolls, potato salad and HALF OF A CHICKEN each. Wow--what a lot of food, and it was absolutely delicious. They also had a drawing there for many sweatshirts etc. I won one XL, so we know who got that one. All of us stuffed chickens headed back to Salem. The traffic was really jammed up, we must have just missed it, as we had to wait a long time for the rest to catch up. Our next stop was at Walleries Pizza in West Salem, then on back to the Freeloader. Lots of door prizes there also, and several Gift Certificates from Hawg Haven--which by the way--both ken and Patty were there for the ride. I won a car cover XXL, so my old Cadillac gets that. It gets even better--- I won First for High Hand with----get this-- 3 Kings--ALL DIAMONDS, I got a real nice $ bill. Man I should have been in Vegas that day!!! This was the first time that the Freeloaders put on a Poker Run, and they all did a superb job, and the whole ride was like I said very leisurely, quite unlike so many of the Poker Runs where everyone is always in a hurry to get to the next stop. You people really missed a good ride, hopefully next year they will put on another one and more of you will be able to make it. GOOD JOB FREELOADERS!!!! Marlene Schroeder 12

16 Chaplin Bill s Train Ride What a beautiful day for a ride--bike ride and train ride. Twelve bikes left from Salem Harley shortly after 10:30 and rode through Silverton, and on into Mollala to the Train Ride at the Shady Del. We parked our bikes in a row by the train tracks, that way everyone riding the train could admire them. We snacked on hot dogs, pop and cookies while waiting for our turn to ride the little trains. That was a lot of fun. Afterwards we visited with Bill s wife. she drove there with a surprise dessert. It was zuk./chocolate cake. YUMMY. We took the scenic tour home through Scotts Mills. What beautiful country we have to ride through here in Oregon! Thanks so much Bill for the ride, and his wife for the cake. Marlene Schroeder 16
