2 Rick s Rumblings By Rick Marinelli, Director Hello Storm Riders! We just got back from the 15th annual Rooster Ride, and did we live up to our name! It was raining Thursday morning when they left, and it rained most of the day. They also got into some rain on Friday! Gene Dutton and Bear Spitzer spent a lot of time on the route and it was perfect. Nice, leisurely rides each day on which no one had to get in any hurry, allowing plenty of time to stop and do some sight seeing. There was plenty of pool time, and, of course, time to have some adult beverages. Gene did a great job at the ceremony. He made everyone laugh and have a good time. I know I really enjoyed it and I can't wait until next year. It is going to start to get really hot soon. So remember to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water before you go out to ride to get fluids into your system. I start drinking water the day before a long ride. I recommend wearing a hydration vest on the really hot days. If you don t have one, Fort Thunder has them. They are not that expensive and are really worth the cost. Heat stroke is definitely something you want to avoid. They say that once you have a heat stroke you are more likely to have another one. Until next time, ride safe out there! 3 Up with the Sun, Gone with the Wind by Lynn Cavin, Activities Officer The 2014 edition of the Rooster Ride is now in the history books. My husband & I were part of the newbie group, which was about 50% of our total riders! What s a Rooster Ride without rain? And boy, did it rain. All the way to our lunch stop in Eufaula. We had a nice stop in Old Fort HD in Fort Smith before heading to the first night s hotel, which was directly across the street from a gas station, convenience store, and car wash. A handful of people washed their bikes, only to have them messed up on Friday s ride by perhaps the hardest rainstorm many of us had ever ridden in. The first part of the day was really nice. We had a stop at Mount Magazine s lodge, which looks like a great place to stay, complete with stunning overlooks of the beautiful Arkansas River Valley. During the lunch break at Danville, storms developed right over us and drenched everything. The rest of the ride to Broken Bow was dry and scenic. Everyone made it through all those twisties and long, sweeping curves just fine! Saturday s ride from Broken Bow to McAlester via the Talimena Drive was wonderful. There were a number of nice pullouts to take pictures. We arrived at the Happy Days hotel around 3pm, which left plenty of time for a refreshing dip in the pool before it was time to clean up and head to the closing ceremony. All I can disclose about the actual ceremony is that it s a good idea to pack a Shout stick stain remover, and a small bottle of Febreze won t hurt either. It was a great evening, and we celebrated our newly initiated Rooster Riders with a toast. I am Paparazzi, and I ride with the Rooster Gang! And now, in other news..lots of good dinner & breakfast rides coming up. Check your calendar for details, or watch for my Sunday . The float trip will be on Sept The cost is $40.00 per person for two nights in the bunkhouse, and a six mile float on the Illinois River. There s also the LOH overnighter to Quartz Mountain Lodge on Sept , and the chapter picnic at Red Rock Canyon is on Sunday, Sept. 28 th. 4 Safety Briefs by Lindell Smith, Safety Officer Hot summer days make a convection oven look positively chilly. Riding in hot weather presents its own challenges. However, rather than staying home and missing all the fun, with a little planning it is still possible to enjoy our favorite roads. Dressing properly is important. A cotton T-shirt and shorts are not the answer. Exposed skin is not only dangerous in a crash, it's a major source of dehydration and sunburn. Add to that the long-term danger of skin cancer and covering up becomes the clear choice. Cover all exposed skin to reduce dehydration. There are some specialized clothes that purport to have UV resistance built in, but are a bit on the pricey side. Many riders use the old biker's trick of soaking the body of a heavy cotton sweatshirt in water, leaving as much water in the sweatshirt as possible. The wet shirt becomes an evaporative cooler that leaves the rider in blissful comfort for awhile. Hydration vest are also available now and work well. Apply plenty of sunscreen to all exposed areas. Look for a product that is strongly water-resistant so it won't run into the eyes from perspiration. Use at least SPF 30, and since sunscreen loses potency with age, make sure it is fresh. Most people fail to put on enough sunscreen, and do not reapply throughout their ride. Start the ride well-hydrated. Contrary to logic, this will not necessitate extra pit stops. Hydrate during the ride. If the temperature or heat index is very high double your intake, since fluid loss can top a gallon an hour. Riders who do not need to make a pit stop every couple of hours are dehydrating and should sharply increase their fluid intake. Break the ride into segments with extended cool-off periods every couple of hours. These can be refreshment stops, points of interest, or just spending 30 minutes in a cool gas station, sipping a water or sports drink. Caffeine tends to increase dehydration, as does alcohol. Know the signs of heat exhaustion (profuse sweating, dizziness, flushed face, weakness, muscle cramps) and heat stroke (no sweating, pale face, shallow respiration, collapse). Riders and co-riders should watch for them in themselves and in others. At the first signs, seek a cool place and cool the victim down as quickly as possible. In heat stroke, seek emergency medical help. There were 42 bikes on this year s Rooster Ride. They were divided into 3 groups to make riding safer for all. Riders in groups 2 and 3 stopped at the entrance to the Talimena Drive for a group picture. 4

5 Dinner Ride to Short Eddie s House of BBQ, Watonga, May 31 I placed an order today for sunshine and clear skies for our ride to Watonga to Short Eddie s BBQ (formerly known as the Noble House). We Our route took us from Fort Thunder leaving at 12noon west on SW 4 th Street to I-44 where we headed south to the Hwy 37 exit. We rode west on Hwy 37 through Tuttle and into Minco. Love s Travel Stop at I-40 for a short break. The group then By Denise Jones, Road Captain rode north ended up with partly cloudy skies, and it made the temperatures great for 26 Storm Riders on 19 bikes! There we turned north for a short distance and then west to continue on Hwy 37/152 for about 11 miles. At the Cogar Quick Stop (don t blink or you ll miss it) we turned north to continue on Hwy 37. This stretch of Hwy 37 has some nice curves. At Hinton we turned north onto Hwy 281 to the through Geary and into Watonga. At Hwy 33 we turned east for about four blocks and then turned north on Noble Street to the restaurant. We all parked on the street and stopped for our group picture outside. The restaurant has recently been leased out and renamed Short Eddies BBQ, so I had to try the BBQ! The sliced beef sandwich was really good as was the potato salad. Several ordered the rib dinner, hamburgers and salads. I would say this place is definitely worth a return trip. Thank you to Linda Webster as the mid road captain, Colleen Smith for the sweep road captain and my radioman Moe, for keeping me informed that we are all still together! 5

6 Dinner Ride to A & E Grill, Mustang, June 8 When I woke up the morning of this ride it was raining and had been for several hours. The radar showed the rain was moving on east and it looked like it would clear out soon. We met at the OnCue at 12:30pm and left out at 1:00pm with thirteen members on ten bikes plus Jerry Hines in his cage which really worked out great as he was our action photographer! We rode west on SW 89 th Street and went south on I- 44 where we exited on Hwy 62. We had a nice ride through Newcastle, Blanchard, Chickasha and on into Anadarko. The group turned north on Hwy 281 and stopped at the Wichita Travel Plaza for a short break just outside of Anadarko. We continued on Hwy 281 to Hwy 152 just east of Binger. We turned east and made our way down a nice twisty portion of Hwy 152, which we followed all the way into Mustang and the A & E Grill. Jerry Hines daughter, Allison, was our waitress, and took great care of our group. It looked like everyone ordered different menu items and I don t recall seeing any to-go boxes being carried out, so everyone must ve been really hungry! Worth mentioning: You never knew where Jerry might be, (smile for the Denise Jones Road Captain camera). Then there were the oreo cows, which I missed. You ll have to ask Diane Loser about those! Thanks to Flood Collins and Colleen Smith for the mid and sweep road captain positions and to my hubby Moe for being my radioman. It was a comfortable cloudy summer day to ride 115 miles with the Storm Riders! Storm Riders turned out in force recently to support one of our own. Jesse Melton, assistant general manager at Fort Thunder H-D, had a serious accident on his bike in March. Jesse has made an almost miraculous recovery, and has been an inspiration to all, even riding his new bike, seen here. Proceeds from the poker run helped pay his astronomical hospital bills. WTG Jesse! Your Storm Rider family is happy and proud for you!! 6

7 Dinner Ride to Wild Horse Mountain Bar B Que, Sallisaw, June 14 It was a great day for a ride across Oklahoma. We headed out and cut across the edge of Norman, after that it was a straight shot east on Hwy-9, then a short run north on Hwy-59 to the restaurant. It was a pretty ride out east, especially the Arkansas River and Robert S. Kerr Lock & Dam. The restaurant is just a couple of miles from Robert S. Kerr Reservoir. We had 15 bikes and 1 trike with 16 Storm Riders and 2 guests. Our road chaptains were Mike Austin-lead, Scott Macke-mid and Stan Kilmer-sweep. It took a little longer than i had planed to get there, 4.5 hours, start to finish, with two stops along the way. We lost Rick Marinelli along the way, because he had to get back to El Reno, but we picked up Linda Webster at the restaurant. This was a nice day ride, a little over 200 miles one way. We were by Mike Austin, Road Captain only about 20 miles from Ft Smith AR. The food was good, and the day was great. You could not have asked for a better time. Check your calendar and plan to join us on the next ride. Hello Storm Riders!! It's that time again! Brent and Christina's 3rd Annual Swimming of the HOGS! 8 Leather and Lace by Denise Jones, LOH Officer It is hard to believe that July is here! The heat wave is starting to kick in so be safe on your travels this summer and look twice for those crazy cage drivers! Moe and I, along with a few other chapter members, rode down to McAlester for the Saturday night ceremony of the Rooster Ride. We welcomed over 20 new members to our Rooster Gang! There were many great stories told about the rain, the curvy roads, more rain and the beautiful scenery. What a fun ride and a great tradition the Rooster Ride has become over the years! Hats off to Gene Dutton and all the road captains for getting everyone back home safely. Have you made your reservation for the Ladies of Harley overnight ride on September to Quartz Mountain Resort? It is for all chapter members, not just ladies. As of mid-june eight rooms in our block have been reserved. Rooms are $95.00 for either one king or two double beds. Be sure to tell the resort you are with the Storm Riders HOG Chapter to get the special room rate. If the block sells out, additional reservations will still be honored at the group rate as long as rooms are available. The lodge phone number is (580) As always, all chapter members are responsible for their own room accommodations, gas and food. Get your taste buds ready for a big juicy steak, as we will be riding over to the Backdoor Steakhouse in Blair for dinner. So get your reservation made soon, as this will be a great ride that you will not want to miss! The LOH will have a dinner and movie afternoon later this summer at the Warren Theater. Details are still in the works, so watch your newsletter more information as they become available! Just a small reminder that the LOH is collecting the toiletries again this year. So all you Rooster Gang riders I am expecting some good stuff from all of you! Our next LOH meeting will be on Saturday, July 26 th at Diane Loser s home at 6:00pm. Diane s address is Sorry guys, this is a ladies only event! If you are not receiving the LOH meeting notices, please me at djones1989@yahoo.com so I can add you to my distribution list. That s all for now ride safe and have fun! Denise Jones aka Sweet-n-Low Ladies of Harley Officer Living up to our H.O.G. chapter name, more than 50 Storm Riders sloshed through 134 rainy miles at the beginning of the Rooster Ride. By the end of the fourth day, they had ridden through more than 800 miles through some of the most scenic byways of Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma. 8
