Mike landed there n 8/14/14, apprximately where the red line is and was aer retrieved withut difficulty. He landed east t west cming in ver the barn. The field is an active farm field and is currently planted in grass, but there is n guarantee that the crp wn't change. The field is slightly dwnhill frm east t west, abut 30 feet ver 2000 feet. The field is shrt and narrw, but wuld prbable accmmdate a 15m ship if exactly centered n runway and wing kept up until between runway edge marker lights. In ther wrds use it as a last resrt nly. 5 Deer Run Airpark 85KY N W 49 miles 23 Elevatin Orientatin 890 ft ft 70 ft Deer Run is a great airstrip wned by a cnsrtium f current and retired prfessinal pilts. Runway is grass in gd cnditin. may be a prblem. There are lw berms alternating n each side. If yu stay in the center with a 15 meter ship yu shuld be OK. Landing frm the suth there is a small berm n the east with plenty f rm t the west. Hwever, shrtly dwn the field the situatin reverses, althugh the western berm is much lwer and prbably nt a factr. 6 Flying C Farm 6KY N W 39 miles 24 Elevatin Orientatin 850 ft ft 150 ft Runway is grass in gd cnditin with a sailplane friendly width. Landing t the nrth is favred because f a slight uphill slpe fr abut the first 1200 feet at which pint a gentle but marked swale runs thrugh the runway. Nrth end f the runway is abut 30 feet higher than the suth end. Owner is friendly t pilts. This airstrip is near Rster and greatly superir because f the width. 7 Free Airprt 12KY N W 48 miles 22 Elevatin Orientatin 853 ft ft 80 ft Runway is grass. It slpes upward t the Nrthwest favring a landing t the nrth. There are 5 galln paint buckets turned upside dwn marking the runway edges. I believe there are lights inside the buckets. The buckets stand abut 14 high and are abut 75 feet apart. This field is lcated in an area where there are very few ther gd landing sites. There is a windsck at the nrtheast end f the field, but it is small and I think wuld be very difficult t see. There are traffic cnes marking the threshld f the nrtheast end f the runway. is lcated midway between Lawrenceburg and Harrdsburg, Kentucky. There are high tensin pwer lines and a large garage n the suthern end f the runway. ( It is the T-shaped building in the lwer center f the verhead picture.) 14 Lee Bttm 64I N W 56.4 miles 03 Elevatin Orientatin 470 ft ft 80 ft Lee Bttm is a beautiful, well maintained airstrip n the banks f the Ohi River. There is a high bluff alng the west side f the runway which can cause sme turbulence if the wind is strng frm the west and the landing is t the nrth. 16 Littlemunt N W 23 miles 38 Elevatin Orientatin 748 ft ft 75 ft Runway is sd, very well kept at the time f visit. The runway slpes uphill t the nrthwest apprximately 20 feet ver its' length f 1800 feet. Landing t the nrthwest with tw ut t the sutheast is favred by terrain and slpe, althugh the terrain t the sutheast is very hstile t a frced landing. I landed there n August 4, 2013 flying the L-33 and was aer retrieved withut incident. We believe that Shawn Hnacker wns the field. 17 Masn Valley 3KY N W 17.2 miles 26 Elevatin Orientatin 509 ft ft 80 ft Masn Valley is a large sd farm near Taylrsville, Kentucky. Gliders have landed there n numerus ccasins, mst recently 9/28/14. Owner is friendly. The runway is marked by traffic cnes at the present time. In the past the runway has been marked by white tires. The runway is mved peridically depending n where the crp is being harvested. There is high grund and a majr pwer line t the nrthwest and a smaller pwer line n the apprach frm the sutheast. The runway has always been in excellent cnditin and it lies in the middle f the sd farm prviding flat appraches in bth directins, being mindful f the pwer lines sme distance ut n either end. I have landed there twice bth times frm the nrthwest t the sutheast, but either directin shuld wrk well. I twed ut t the sutheast. It is a lng flat field, but had sme areas f dampness n the day I visited. The nrthern part f the field appears better drained, but is shrter. 23 Private Air Strip N W 33 miles 09 Elevatin Orientatin 765 ft ft 80 ft Nv 07, 2014 I fund this airstrip while visiting the sd farm t the nrth (nte brwn areas where sd has been remved). This is a large sd farm with many pssibilities fr emergency landings. The area indicated by the line running east west in the center f the pht appears t be in use as an airstrip (nte - there was an airplane parked in hangar where the marker pin is placed). Owner f the sd farm des nt want his farm used as a landing strip and denies that there is an active air strip n the back f his prperty. Maybe smene else wns the air strip. 24 Rster 40KY N W 37 miles 26 Elevatin Orientatin 765 ft ft 40 ft Runway is grass and narrw. There are runway lights alng each edge and berms in sme areas. The east end f the runway abuts highway 55 and is abut 10 feet belw the radway with berms n either side. If a landing there were abslutely necessary land t the east with tuchdwn abeam the barn with the white rf n the suth side f the runway, keep yur wings level until between runway edge lights. Yu might just be able t pull it ff, but it is a high risk situatin. There are several aircraft based there and the wner is friendly, hwever the runway is t narrw fr a sailplane. 25 Samuel s Springs (Shultise ) N W 6.5 miles 332 Elevatin Orientatin 765 ft ft 80+ ft Runway is sd, very well kept at the time f visit. The strip slpes upward frm nrtheast t suthwest with the mst prnunced slpe in the first 500 r s feet at the nrtheast end. Best t apprach frm the nrtheast and land t suthwest. Be sure avid tall trees and t allw fr the upward slpe n the nrtheast end. Burbn warehuses parallel the runway and are gd landmarks. Wires lcated at suthern end. 26 Schindler s N W 51.2 miles 03 Elevatin Orientatin 807 ft ft 60 ft Runway is grass, clsely cut at the time f visit. There is a green and white barn at the suth end f the runway. There are sme mild undulatins in the mid prtin. There is a CONE SHAPED OBSTRUCTION (appears t be a large traffic cne) n the west side f the runway abut 1000 feet frm the suth end. 27 Shady Acres (4KY8) N W 14.3 miles 310 Elevatin Orientatin 445 ft ft 80 ft This field is n lnger maintained as an airfield. At the time f visit the surface was harvested sy bean crp and wuld make a gd emergency landing strip. The field has been planted in sy beans the last tw seasns and crn prir t that. Runway surface cnditins will depend n time f year and crp planted. A gd landmark is the interstate rest area immediately east f the field. Tenant farmer present at time f visit states that huses will sn be built in this field. Best t tuchdwn beynd the stream that traverses the runway near the midfield pint, but this is nt abslutely necessary. 28 Ultralight N W 12 miles 103 Elevatin Orientatin 729 ft ft 50 ft Paul and I visited this field in August f The wner was nt present, but we were tld that it is used as a RC field. The runway is paved 800 feet by 50 feet with wide shulders and apprximately 300 feet f rugh ver run ging uphill at the nrth end. There is structure n the west side f the runway abut 300 feet frm the suth end. There is enugh width t avid this bstacle. Landing t the nrth wuld be favred because f the ver run and the slpe. 30 Willw Island 58KY N W 23 miles 23 Elevatin Orientatin 738 ft ft 80 ft Nv 3, 2014 Willw Island is a grass strip that is part f fly in cmmunity. One f ur club members resides there. The main runway(nrthern mst) is in very gd cnditin and Brian landed there recently and was aer retrieved. Terrain drps ff at the east end f the runway. There is a secnd runway suth f the main runway, but it is shrter, narrwer, and basically riented in the same directin, s I dn't think there is any reasn t use it. Fr the last several years there has been an aircraft parked n the suth side f the main runway abut midfield. It pses n hazard and helps mark the site as an airfield. View frm East t West. 31 Wdledge Airprt 82KY N W 32 miles 01 Elevatin Orientatin 680 ft ft 85 ft Feb 27, 2013 Runway is grass and in gd shape at the time f visit. It is lcated in eastern Jeffersn Cunty n the edge f SDF Charlie airspace and surrunded by subdivisins. It is wned by E.J. Schickli, ne f the funding members f the Luisville Saring Club and the individual that dnated the K-6 t the club. There are pwer lines(marked with range balls) at the nrthwest end f the field and trees at the sutheast end. Windsck is n the west side abut midway alng the runway.
