The project has reached a critica miestone; tunneing is now finished and the programme is over 65 per cent compete. Eizabeth and Victoria, Crossrai s ast two tunne boring machines, competed their fina journeys at Farringdon marking the end of three years of tunneing. Since 2012, teams of over 10,000 men and women and hundreds of apprentices have been working to hep create London s new underground tunnes. This big east-west breakthrough brings the Crossrai project a significant step forward in deivering London s new raiway. Construction of the 10 new Crossrai stations has continued aongside tunneing. The first piece of the station concourse bridge was instaed at Whitechape and a temporary station is being buit to aow the construction of a new Crossrai station. At Bond Street, excavation to a fourth eve beow ground at the eastern ticket ha was competed. Network Rai work to upgrade existing infrastructure is over a third compete. A new one-mie section of track between Pumstead and Abbey Wood has been aid. As part of the Crossrai programme PROJECT UPDATE over the next few years, Network Rai wi improve many stations on the route, deiver major upgrades to tracks and signaing systems and buid a brand new station at Abbey Wood. The first above station deveopment inked to the Crossrai project opened at Canary Wharf in May. Crossrai Pace, which spans four eves above the future Canary Wharf Crossrai station, houses a mix of retai, eisure and pubic space incuding a striking rooftop garden. From summer, the focus of Crossrai construction shifts to fitting out the raiway. New teams, apprentices and a new set of machines wi hep turn the underground tunnes and stations into an operationa raiway. At the same time, Crossrai wi continue to work cosey with its partners to deiver 30 station improvements, 12 above station deveopments and urban ream improvements across the entire route. 2 UNCOVERING LONDON S PAST Crossrai s archaeoogy team has competed one of the most significant phases of excavation on the project at Liverpoo Street. Over 3,000 peope took up the opportunity to watch archaeoogists carefuy excavate ayers of London history from a speciay constructed pubic viewing patform. Findings from the site which wi ater become the Broadgate ticket ha for Liverpoo Street station incude the foundations of od Broad Street raiway station; 3,000 burias from the former Bedam cemetery; Tudor period finds; roman artefacts incuding jeweery and decorated pottery; and a medieva canaisation of the River Wabrook, one of London s ost rivers. Mystery sti surrounds the discovery of corpses strewn by an od roman road and skus found by the od river bank. Some theories point to grim stories of gadiators kied in a nearby arena (now beow the Guidha) or the execution of roman criminas or rebes. Other theories suggest ess gruesome ends such as reigious rituas tied to the afterife or the erosion of a nearby cemetery which coud have washed skus and bones downstream. Research being undertaken by the Museum of London Archaeoogy is expected to provide a greater understanding of the discoveries. Aongside the archaeoogica programme, a vounteer-ed effort is heping identify the names of individuas buried in the Bedam Buria Ground. Over 5,000 names have been identified so far. FOCUS TURNS TO FITTING OUT THE RAILWAY With tunneing now compete, the focus of the construction programme shifts to the huge task of fitting out the empty tunnes, stations, shafts and portas with the infrastructure, power and technoogy required to become a fuy operationa raiway. Over the next few years, new speciaist teams wi work with a new set of machines to ay forty-two kiometres of tracks. Raiway infrastructure such as patform screen doors, ventiation fans, cabes, wakways, power, signaing and communication systems wi be designed and instaed. This atest component of the construction programme presents many new opportunities for UK companies as speciaist skis wi be required to hep deiver the project successfuy. Freddy Denny, 24, from Petersfied in Hampshire, was chosen for the Apprentice of the Year award. Freddy, who switched his career path from computer science to embrace his passion for construction, was praised by his co-workers for his enthusiasm and skis in mentoring younger members of his team. Other award winners were Nico Parmar (Infrastructure Apprentice of the Year) and Laurent Kennett (Business Apprentice of the Year). Apprentices work across the entire project from engineering and construction to corporate functions, gaining experience, skis and confidence for the future benefit of the construction industry.

3 TUNNELLING COMPLETE London s new 42 kiometres of tunnes stretching from Paddington in the west to Woowich in the east, is now compete. Since 2012 when Phyis the first of eight tunne boring machines was aunched from the west at the Roya Oak porta, thousands of men and women have been working beneath the streets of the capita to buid London s new underground tunnes. Competion of tunneing signas a big east-west breakthrough and a critica miestone for the project deivering a new raiway for London and the South East. Excavation of station spaces, caverns and waking routes is aso reaching competion. 4 HOW HAS REUSED 98% OF EXCAVATED EARTH Over seven miion tonnes of earth has been excavated during Crossrai s construction programme. Ninety-eight per cent of this has been reused to bring new ife to nature reserves, recreationa faciities, agricutura and industria and in London and the South-East. 1 WALLASEA ISLAND Over three miion tonnes was used to create a 1,500 acre widife habitat at Waasea Isand in Essex. A coaborative project with the Roya Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), this is argest and most important coasta habitat creation scheme in the UK and one of the UK s most innovative food defence Newport systems, designed to hep combat threats from coasta fooding. 5 NETWORK RAIL UPGRADES FOR The programme to prepare the existing rai network for Crossrai continues to make good progress, with work on the route s surface section now more than one third compete. CENTRAL STATIONS UPDATE Over a mie of track has been aid between the Crossrai tunne porta at Pumstead and Abbey Wood station. Aso at Abbey Wood, the former station buiding was demoished as part of the work to transform services in the oca area which wi incude a brand new Crossrai station with step-free access to every patform. The arriva of Crossrai wi significanty increase the number of trains serving the oca area and, for the first time, aow peope to trave right through centra London without having to change trains. In ate March the green ight was given to impement improvements to the design of West Drayton station which wi incude new features such as a footbridge, ifts to provide step-free access to patforms, improved customer service and safety enhancements. Other work successfuy deivered in recent months incude additiona trackwork in Acton; the impementation of a new, modern signaing system between Heathrow Junction and Reading; and the start of work at Harod Wood, Brentwood and Shenfied stations. In the coming months, major improvements wi get underway at a number of stations in outer London which wi be competey rebuit or significanty improved, providing passengers with new, more spacious, brighter ticket has, onger patforms and new ifts. Progress continues at Farringdon Station construction in recent months has seen the competion of the primary concrete ining for the new 350 metre patform tunnes. Work on the secondary concrete ining is now in progress. Work here incudes a new urban ream scheme to enhance the pedestrian experience and safety on approach to the temporary station. PLACE OPENS Crossrai Pace, the first above station deveopment inked to the Crossrai project, opened at Canary Wharf. Spanning four eves directy above the future Crossrai station, the deveopment comprises a vibrant mix of retai, eisure and pubic space incuding an exotic rooftop garden. Buit within the water, the striking design evokes an od cipper, inspired by Canary Wharf s maritime heritage. The seection of pants in the rooftop garden has aso drawn on this history and incudes species that originated from historic trading destinations. The opening represents the first pubic ream benefit to resut from the Crossrai project. When compete in 2018, the seven storey buiding, deivered by the Canary Wharf Group, wi house the new Crossrai Canary Wharf station. Bond Street ticket ha work progress Excavation at the fourth eve beow ground at the eastern ticket ha is now compete. Over the next few months the focus wi be on the continued construction of the eastern ticket ha to base sab eve, concurrent with construction of tunne patforms and track sabs. When the station opens, it wi provide direct access to the Crossrai Bond Street station patforms via an entrance on the western side of Hanover Square.

6 TFL RAIL STARTS LIVERPOOL STREET TO SHENFIELD SERVICE MOVING PADDINGTON FORWARD Paddington station is undergoing the most significant transformation it has seen since it was first buit in the 1800s. One of London s gateway stations, the grade one isted buiding wi be one of the first new Crossrai centra stations to open in The station is being buit directy beow Departures Road and Eastbourne Terrace and wi offer a superior traveing experience with smoother interchanges and improved accessibiity, easing congestion and providing space for future growth in passenger numbers. Modern and sustainabe design wi see the ticket has fooded with natura ight right down to where escaators meet station patforms. Buiding on the origina Victorian vision for grand station design, dramatic pubic space wi reconnect peope to the station from street eve. A ong gass canopy wi cover a new muti-storey pubic space that wi ead to the new station patforms. The gass canopy wi feature arge-scae pubic art from New York artist, Spencer Finch. Step-free access wi incude ifts down to patforms and a new step-free ink between the Crossrai station and Bakeroo ine patforms, reducing congestion. Construction of Crossrai has been a catayst for regeneration and wi see Paddington transform to a vibrant destination with enhanced pubic spaces and station architecture that seamessy bends into its surroundings. Around the station there wi be spacious pedestrian areas with more seating, bicyce parking and trees. In addition to the aready improved taxi faciity and new paza on the cana-side, a 15 storey mixed-used buiding space with direct access into the Nationa Rai, Circe and Hammersmith & City ine stations. TfL Rai has taken over train services between Liverpoo and Shenfied. The service is now running with existing trains that have had modifications made to improve reiabiity. These trains wi be used unti new Crossrai trains arrive in With TfL Rai, customers wi benefit from staffed stations from the first to ast train, enhanced security, customer information improvements, enhanced accessibiity and better integration of this route with the rest of London s pubic transport network.
