ISSUE 36 SEPTEMBER 2015 MOVING AHEAD CROSSRAIL PROJECT SEPTEMBER UPDATE Andrew Wolstenholme CEO Crossrail Ltd CROSSRAIL PROGRAMME 67% 60% The programme to build the new railway for London and the South East is now 67% complete and continues to be delivered safely, on time and within the available funding. Following the successful completion of 42 kilometres tunnel in the spring, the project continues to move closer towards delivering the new railway which will open in phases from The 10 new Crossrail stations being built in central London are starting to take shape. Station structures are complete at Canary Wharf and Custom House. Construction of all other new Crossrail stations continues in central London and good progress is being made to upgrade stations on the West and the East. During the summer, Crossrail welcomed the 465 metre long concrete train that will help build more than 50 kilometres of new tracks. The train is one of several new machines that will help fit out the new underground tunnels and stations. This phase of the construction programme presents many more opportunities for skills, talent and the UK economy. As the largest construction project in Europe, it has been important that Crossrail delivers a world-class railway that maximises the economic, social and environmental impacts during construction and operation of the railway. Crossrail is estimated to generate at least 42 billion for the UK economy and support 55,000 jobs. So far, 95% of contracts have been awarded to UK companies with 61% of suppliers based outside of London. The project is also delivering the most significant injection of skills into the construction and tunnelling industry in a generation and supporting 485 apprentices in collaboration with its supply chain. Every effort has been made to turn environmental waste to gain. 98% of spoil excavated during the construction programme has been beneficially reused to bring new life to areas in London and the South East. This includes the creation of a new wildlife habitat at Wallasea Island, the first phase of which was completed in the summer. We continue to focus on delivering a sustainable railway fit for the future. WATCH! 2 of suppliers based outside of London DELIVERING LONDON S NEW RAILWAY SUSTAINABLY The successful completion of 42 kilometres of new tunnels under London marked a critical milestone for the project and the programme continues to move forward to deliver the new railway including 10 new stations in central London and 30 upgraded stations across the rest of the route. Crossrail is estimated to generate at least 42 billion for the UK economy and is a key contributor to London s long term sustainability. When it opens, it will add 10% capacity to central London s rail network and reduce congestion. Sustainability has been at the heart of decision making on the project since day one. From energy efficiencies and air quality, to skills, accessibility and supply chain benefits, it has been important to maximise the economic and social impacts of Crossrail and minimise the amount of energy and resources used during its construction and operation. As Europe s largest infrastructure project, Crossrail presents an excellent opportunity to lead the way in delivering a sustainable railway. 95% of the contracts awarded by Crossrail were to companies within the UK 61% 44% of SMEs said they made new contacts because of their work on Crossrail 55,000 jobs estimated to be supported by Crossrail 98% of excavated material beneficially reused OVER 10,000 items spanning 55 million years unearthed across 20 sites 86% of construction equipment in the central section of the route fitted with emissions controls 38% LED lighting will be used in all Crossrail tunnels and stations saving up to 38% energy compared to fluorescent lighting 485 apprentices on the Crossrail project to date 4,312 job starts by local or previously unemployed people 8,000+ drivers attended lorry driver training courses to improve safety 950+ young people undertook work experience FIRST PHASE OF LANDMARK ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION PROJECT COMPLETE Over three years, Crossrail has contributed more than three million tonnes of excavated material from its tunnels, stations, shafts and portals to help create the new wildlife habitat, known as Jubliee Marsh. In the summer the new sea walls at Wallasea Island were breached. This allowed tidal flow into the marshland marking the successful completion of the first phase of Wallasea Island Wild Coast Project. The island will provide a haven for an array of internationally important wildlife including thousands of migratory birds, helping transform Wallasea Island into the largest habitat creation project of its type in Europe. A unique collaboration with the RSPB, Wallasea Island will also be one the UK s most innovative flood defence systems.

CROSSRAIL S LAST GIANT TUNNEL BORING MACHINE IS LEAVING FARRINGDON After three years of tunnelling, Crossrail s final 1,000 tonne tunnelling machine, Victoria, is being dismantled 40 metres below Farringdon in central London. Victoria, named after Queen Victoria who oversaw the birth of modern railways, completed its tunnelling journey when it successfully broke into Farringdon Crossrail station in May Over the last three years, eight 1,000 tonne tunnelling machines bored 42 kilometres of new 6.2 diameter tunnels under central London, connecting existing railways from Paddington in the west to Woolwich in the east. They weaved their way between existing underground lines, sewers, utility tunnels and building foundations deep beneath the streets of the capital. The machine will be removed via the shaft at Stepney Green and returned to the manufacturer, where parts will be recycled for future tunnelling projects. LOVE TUNNELLING? GET YOUR HANDS ON THE NEW BOOK (SEE BACK PAGE FOR DETAILS). TRACK BUILDING GIANT ARRIVES AT PLUMSTEAD Crossrail has welcomed the arrival of the 465 metre long concrete train at Plumstead in southeast London. The arrival of the train one of several new machines that will be used to fit out the tunnels signals the next major stage for the project following the end of tunnelling. up to 250 metres of concrete and undergoing maintenance during the day. The arrival of the concrete train at Plumstead - the logistical nerve centre for In numbers: 465m this new phase of Crossrail s construction programme - will bring the project another step towards the completion of the new railway for London and the South East. 20 WAGONS Up to 250m PE O of concrete poured per day 24hr R AT I O N The bright yellow train which was refurbished and brought to the UK from France via the Channel Tunnel, is as long as four football pitches when fully assembled and is a self-contained concrete batching factory on wheels. The train will be used to help build the 46 kilometres of new tracks for Crossrail. Its operation will be a 24 hour job, entering the tunnel each night to pour 50km+

CROSSRAIL CENTRAL STATIONS UPDATE MAJOR MILESTONE ACHIEVED AT CUSTOM HOUSE The construction programme at Custom House achieved an important milestone during the summer. The station structure is now complete and three pedestrian bridges successfully installed. The station is being brought to life more each day as cladding, glass and other exterior architectural finishes are installed. The first tracks will be laid on site in early autumn alongside the installation of mechanical and electrical infrastructure, including lifts. NEW TICKET HALLS TAKE SHAPE AT LIVERPOOL STREET Construction of the new ticket halls and the underground shafts at Liverpool Street station is making good progress. At Moorgate, alternative access to the London Underground platforms has been installed to facilitate demolition of the existing ticket hall. Works south of the existing ticket hall are progressing. Following the demolition works here, the basement and street level slabs have been poured and installation of the structural columns that will support the roof of the new integrated ticket hall is now complete. At the Broadgate ticket hall one of the most significant digs of Crossrail s archaeology programme completed in the summer. The dig revealed over 3000 skeletons from the Bedlam burial ground. Excavation of the escalator barrel has commenced and will continue to a depth of 25 metres below ground to connect with another set of escalators that will lead to the new platforms. GOOD PROGRESS CONTINUES AT FARRINGDON The eastern ticket hall at Farringdon has started to take shape with the entrance hall floor and the escalator foundations now visible. Below ground, the primary lining, waterproofing and the secondary lining for the east bound platform is nearing completion. At the western ticket hall construction of the steps that will connect the public concourse to the station platforms has begun. Work to integrate the Farringdon Road Victorian era foundations with the station structure is also complete. CELEBRATING WOMEN IN ENGINEERING In June, Rail Minister Claire Perry MP joined female engineers from Crossrail, Transport for London and Network Rail at Farringdon station on National Women in Engineering Day (NWED) a day dedicated to raising the profile and celebrating the achievements of women in engineering. The visit was part of a series of events Crossrail and other organisations hosted aimed at inspiring young women into careers in engineering. Other activities included a panel discussion on ideas to increase female representation in the industry and an event where young women from schools along the Crossrail route were able to experience the project first hand. Also coinciding with NWED, 860 people from over 150 transport and engineering organisations, including Crossrail, gathered at Horse Guards Parade to celebrate the diverse roles of women in these industries. The group broke the Guiness World Record for the most people performing a jumping high-five simultaneously as part of Transport for London s 100 years of women in transport programme.

NETWORK RAIL WORKS REACH HALF WAY MARK The railway improvement works being delivered by Network Rail for Crossrail are now 50% complete. Improvements on the surface section of the route include upgrading stations, track, signalling and installing new overhead power supplies to enable the new trains to run. Station improvement work at Gidea Park started in the summer. The station, which recently became part of the TfL network, will have two new lifts installed to allow for step-free access to platforms, refurbishment to the footbridge, platform extensions to accommodate the new 200 metre long trains and new lighting and CCTV. Work is expected to finish by summer The works to transform Ealing Broadway station is also underway. The major upgrade will include a new station facade, a larger ticket hall, a long canopy running the length of the forecourt, new lifts to provide step-free access to platforms and platform extensions to accommodate the new 200 metre long trains. Proposals for major improvements at West Ealing and Southall stations have been given the go ahead by the council. Both stations will feature modern ticket halls flooded with natural light, new footbridges and lifts to allow step-free access to platforms. Other improvements include new lighting, customer information screens, station signage, help points and CCTV to help improve passengers experience at the station. For local works information call the Network Rail helpline on ADDITIONAL STATION DESIGN ENHANCEMENTS Designs for 22 station improvements on the outer route being delivered by Transport for London are underway. Eleven stations between Maryland and Brentwood in the east and 11 stations between Acton Main Line and Taplow in the west will undergo significant works aimed at enhancing the station experience for passengers. The improvements will include step-free access to platforms at all stations, new ticket gates, lighting, signage and renovation to exterior and interior spaces. The designs for improvements on the eastern section of the route are nearing completion ahead of the start of works scheduled to commence early SUCCESSFUL START TO NEW TFL RAIL SERVICE Passengers travelling between Liverpool Street and Shenfield are benefitting from the improved travel experience since TfL Rail took over services on 31 May. Since the start of the new service, over 94% of trains have been operating to schedule. Other improvements include staffed stations from the first to last train, enhanced customer information and better integration into the rest of London s public transport network. All existing trains will be refurbished by the end of the year and the new Crossrail trains will enter service in 2017.

BREAKTHROUGH: CROSSRAIL S TUNNELLING STORY FORWARD LOOK AT BOND STREET Located in the heart of Mayfair, the new Crossrail station at Bond Street will increase passenger capacity and improve accessibility at one of London s busiest stations. Weaving the unique local history into the design in and around the station, the new development will enhance the experience of passengers, visitors and those who live and work nearby. Two brand new ticket halls at Hanover Square in the east and Davies Street in the west have been designed with a carefully considered selection of material to create timeless and easily recognisable public spaces. Ticket halls, flooded with natural light, will lead passengers through to the new Crossrail platforms deep below ground. Striking colonnades at street level will wrap around the ticket halls merging the internal and external spaces to create welcoming public areas that complement the distinctive architecture of neighbouring buildings. A new public art piece will be created for the west ticket hall. The selection of the art work will take place later this year. The design in and around the station places great emphasis on an enhanced pedestrian experience. Generous forecourts with high quality granite paving will seamlessly extend into the station concourse at both ends. These public spaces will also include wider footpaths, new cycle stands and improved lighting and signage. Developments above the stations will offer a mix of additional retail and office spaces for those who live, work and visit London s prime shopping destination. When it opens in 2018, Crossrail Bond Street station is expected to see 225,000 passengers daily and will be completely integrated with the London Underground network with interchanges for the Central and Jubilee line. Delve deep underground with Crossrail s new book about tunnelling on Europe s largest infrastructure project. With over 150 stunning photographs, explore how some of the deepest, largest and longest tunnels were made in one of the most extensive underground building projects in a generation. The book is available to buy from the London Transport Museum and Amazon. EVENTS Experience Crossrail as part of Open House London Crossrail s ticketed sites are now fully booked.
