I am very proud and honoured to be your new District Governor in 2017/18. May I take this opportunity to thank IPDG Nigel and Marion for all their hard work during the last year, and also thank them for the help and advice given to us as we start this exciting journey. The Chicago International Convention was brilliant. Not just the city, or even just the band Chicago, (although they were both great), but the whole Convention with the Beach Boys, Charlie Daniels Band, Patti LaBelle and Mandala as well as lots of Jazz bands too numerous to mention. There was plenty of hard work, too. Our new International President, Doctor Naresh Aggarwal, has chosen as his theme for the year "We serve". Yes, that is the motto of all Lions but he feels he wants to emphasise the "Power of WE", the "Power of SERVICE" and above all, each of us taking ACTION to make it happen. My own theme for the year is the second half of a very famous Helen Keller quotation "Together we can do so much", emphasising how much we can all achieve by working together. Try reading the words aloud with emphasis on a different word each time. I am sure that as I travel around EA, I will be inspired by your hard work, commitment, enthusiasm and dedication. 2 Sheila Prior is our District Governor s Lady. It has become a tradition for the DG s Lady to choose a Charity and this year Sheila s choice will be Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA). Receiving a diagnosis of Breast Cancer and the subsequent surgery required is a difficult time for any patient and their family. While the treatment for the disease is available on the NHS there is often a lack of support or information about the options available to these patients as well as the opportunity to talk to someone who has gone or is going through the same experience. The BRA charity started in 2004 when a number of nurses identified how little information or support there was for newly diagnosed Breast Cancer patients contemplating breast reconstruction surgery and the impact it had on them and their families in this area. It was in recognition of this that the BRA meetings and the charity itself were conceived. Although based in Chelmsford, Essex, the charity covers patients attending from all over East Anglia. The BRA charity enables the provision of equipment and services in addition to those provided by the hospital. Over the years practical and emotional support and advice have been provided to thousands of women undergoing mastectomy and breast reconstruction. Fund raising events continue to raise money for particular projects, for instance, up to date equipment for the high dependency bay on the ward, a microscope to enable surgeons to join small blood vessels during surgery, a music system for the patients in the post op ward, to name just a few things the money has been used for recently. Sheila believes that Breast Reconstruction Awareness offers great support for the patients and their families in East Anglia undergoing this type of surgery and has therefore nominated this charity to support during this coming year. Robin Bloy (centre) SWAFFHAM LIONS SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY have completed a month of weekends at the Tesco store in Swaffham celebrating the centenary of Lions International, which was formed in Chicago in 1917 by Melvin Jones. With the Lions gazebo set up in the store, the sail flags flying and bunting decorating the store, the Lions mascot and a team of Lions started to sell raffle tickets for the cuddly Lions. The Lion mascot was a great hit with young and old, with many asking if they could take a selfie with this large cuddly Lion. The last weekend was devoted to a large tombola with all the prizes being donated by Tesco. The Lions also distributed their Message in a Bottle and raised the awareness of the work the Lions do in the community. The month s celebrations raised 1643 for Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation. Following a very informative talk given by Georgie Bell at a recent meeting about the work of the Merle Boddy Centre, the Lions welfare committee recommended a donation of 500 to the Centre in support of all they do for the community. have admired the work that Family Action do in the community, together with their Wellbeing Group which meets weekly at the Community Centre. The Wellbeing Group services the needs of the lonely, people with physical or mental health problems and people who are looking for companionship. The group is run by Jo Jacklyn and is funded through Family Actions limited funds, it has up to twenty people attending weekly. The meetings last for two hours where they have guest speakers or go out on trips. Jo Jacklyn said that the 250 the Lions donated would go to support one of their day trips. 4 How many Lion members and their partners, watched, laughed, but admired the bravado of Alexander Armstrong and friends in the recent Real Full Monty production on TV, raising awareness of Prostate Cancer. News from the sponsored CHAPS day in Brightlingsea indicates that ten members of the 120 total public attending, were found to have above normal PSA results and that necessary further investigations will be required. Blood pressure and Diabetes are invisible, and a suggestion that all members should attend such clinics for tests is advisable. member Lion Peter Beadles, also has the title of Deputy Mayor for the Cinque Port Liberty of Brightlingsea. During a visit by the Cinque Port Mayor of Sandwich 8 members of Clacton Lions Club were asked to assist with marshalling the procession as it made its way through the town. They managed to find time for a cuppa before the procession returned to the Town Council offices later. In the evening, the members were invited to a Civic Reception where they met and talked to all the visiting Dignitaries. Clacton Lions President Liz Godden felt at home with the Mayor of Sandwich, he too is a former Brummie! The penultimate week of President Liz Godden year, was both busy for her and fellow Clacton Club members. With successive carnivals on Saturdays at Brightlingsea and Gt.Bentley, snuggled in between was a Crazy Golf/Fish and Chip Fellowship meeting and a Lions Centennial Quiz evening. A Lions Centennial Quiz was organised by, with awkward questions being set and asked by Lions Quizmaster, Adrian Robinson. Leo the Club s mascot, along with other members, was on hand to meet and greet over 100 quizzers that formed 18 teams. The hall, festooned with 250 ft of homemade bunting, rosettes and balloons had a welcoming Bucks Fizz drink and individual cakes for all. Withams Pink Ladies, with Zone Chairperson Sandie Briault, made the trip up the A12, and another team from Wivenhoe, (still 13 miles away) came along for a fun, intriguing evening. Regular attendees to Clactons quizzes, were the Bright Sparks, who yet again, never out of the top 3, went on to dominate the evening. They beat another regular team Flying Piglets by a clear 5 points. The 200 winning prize, which goes to the winners nominated charity, was handed back to Clacton Lions for future local causes or disaster funding. A total of 515 was raised. You can guess what sort of day it is going to be when a Police Officer asks where the mobile Police office was. Yes really!! are in the process of buying a defibrillator which will be placed in their local shopping precinct. From local opticians and shops they have collected. and sent off pairs of used spectacles in the last three and a half years. Lions Ron Hill, Mike Barker and Mike Clipston August welcomed a new Lion into the Club at their Changeover celebrations recently. Nothing particularly unusual about that you might say, except that this was no ordinary lion. A couple of months ago, Lion Ron Hill came up with an idea for a new fundraising game, Luv A Lion aimed particularly at children, involving a large number of golf tees and a pegboard. Basically the tees are placed in the pegboard holes, with a certain number having a gold, silver or blue tip. For 20p, children can choose a peg and if it has a coloured end, they win a prize. Great idea, everyone thought, so Lion Ron turned to the Club s construction dept., aka Lion Mike Barker, to produce the game board, a challenge he met with aplomb. The board needs a lion picture to give it some appeal", Ron thought, so the gauntlet was thrown down to the art department, (Lion Mike Clipston) to produce a suitable image, perhaps with the jungle as a background When Lion Mike pointed out that lions live on the grasslands, back came the answer in that case what about Kilimanjaro? No pressure at all then!! A few weeks later the task was completed and a formal unveiling and hand over of Serengeti Sid, as he is known, was made (the view is in fact from Amboseli) and in view of the responsibility associated with looking after the new member, a new unofficial position Club was created for Lion Ron - Keeper of the Lion.

5 PDG Jim Cawte, Lion President Pam Tallon & Zone Chairman Paul Southerton held a Ball to celebrate 100 years of Lions, at Lynford Hall. 100 guests, some from other Lions Clubs in East Anglia, enjoyed a three course meal followed by dancing to a disco. The Lions took the opportunity to have their Presidents change over ceremony during the evening, with Lion John Collins handing over to Pam Tallon. In her acceptance speech she said that she was honoured to be the first female President of Swaffham Lions and the second Tallon to hold the IP President John & President Pam office. In thanking John for his work during the first six months of our centennial celebrations, she outlined some of the coming events for the rest of the year and said that the Lions should have fun whilst working to help the community. welcomed their new President Lion Tony Wass with a cheque of 53,000 which is the total raised through fundraising for the last 12 months - a five year record. Fundraising events included Bacton Fayre, Sportsmans Dinner, Santa Sleigh, Ernie Pearce Charity Boxing Dinner, Art Show and Sale, Terry Cook Memorial Charity Golf Day and the Suffolk Villages Charity Bike Ride. Lion Treasurer Keith Cooper reported on the recipients of funds over the last 12 months. Some 94 individuals, local and national charities received monies from Stowmarket Lions. These ranged from hospices St Nicholas Hospice Care, St Elizabeth Hospice, Cancer Charities; Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Ovarian Cancer to emergency service groups including Suffolk Accident and Rescue Services and East Anglian Air Ambulance through to local youth groups and individuals in and around Stowmarket. Stowmarket Lions Suffolk Villages Charity Bike Ride The Suffolk Villages Charity Bike Ride is the last event in the annual favourite in the annual cycling calendar attracting cyclists from far and wide across England. The Ride took place on Sunday 25th June 2017 with 171 riders, who between them clocked up nearly 11,000km cycling the equivalent of 12 times the length of the country from Lands End to John O Groats across the delightful country roads of West Suffolk. The ride raised 2,500 towards Macmillan Cancer Support and Lions Charities. and a firm The riders completed various routes but all enjoyed a rest at the end! August

6 Formal Handover and Blessing of the new Sea Palling Life Boat funded by Wroxham & Hoveton Lions Club Towards the end of 2016, was approached by Sea Palling Volunteer Lifeboat for support in raising funds to replace the engine on their rescue boat. Having supported the group for many years, the Club quickly agreed to finance the full cost of the engine of 4,000. During discussions the Club learned that the group were also looking to raise monies to finance the purchase of a smaller inflatable, which would enable them to get close in to rocks and groynes for rescues, something which the existing boat could not do. As 2017 is the Centenial year of Lions Clubs International, the Club members felt that this would be a perfect project to support and be a lasting legacy for the community as part of the Lions 100 Celebrations. Unanimous approval was given to provide the full cost of 6,000 for the purchase of the boat, which was delivered earlier this year. As an acknowledgement of the help given by the Club, the Sea Palling Independent Lifeboat team agreed that the boat should be named Lion Ros Clipston, in memory of the Club member who sadly passed away at the end of March 2016 aged 65. Ros joined the Club with her husband, Mike, in 2005 and served as President Terry Vout and Lion Mike Clipston August Club Treasurer for the 10 years prior to her passing, as well as being Club President in The new boat inshore was formally handed over and blessed in a ceremony at Sea Palling Lifeboat Station, on Sunday 9th July. This ceremony was attended by Lions Club members and members of Ros family including her husband Mike and brother Terry Vout. Terry is the current Club President. The naming of the boat for Ros is a fitting tribute to a hard-working and dedicated member of the Club and will prove a lasting legacy to her memory. Formerly operated by the RLNI, the Sea Palling Lifeboat Station was closed in 1931, but because of the increasing number of tourists visiting this area of the coast, several residents thought it prudent to provide an inshore lifeboat based at Sea Palling. This led to the present independent lifeboat being founded. Following much fundraising and hard work our first lifeboat The Hearts of Oak was launched. After seven years of service this boat was replaced by the rigid hull inflatable (RIB) named Leo. Many local associations contributed towards its purchase including the Wroxham & Hoveton Lions Club. Leo was on service for over twenty years and carried out many rescues throughout those years. Attending the Tendring Show, at Lawford, near Colchester recently were members from, with greatly appreciated assistance from and. The one day agricultural show, which attracts around 24,000 people, started at 7.30am and was into early evening, 6pm, before being able to leave the showground. Around 2,000 Guardian Angel wristbands were distributed during the day, with reports that no child with a wristband needed to be repatriated with their guardians. Hardly having any rain for a fortnight or more, the sky looked ominous for a much relieved downpour, but that soon changed. The sun had had a lay in, and soon showed its strength, although there was a much appreciated cool breeze. Leo, Clacton s mascot, spent around an hour on a meet and greet high five PR photo call with many children and various animals. The lions paws were a great attraction for the puppies, but Leo showed who s boss when many barked and backed off. Leo spent five minutes resting on one of the exhibitors garden furniture, for a photo and publicity for the company involved, Leo was informed that it would cost 149 for the pleasure. Nice furniture but no pocket for the wallet!

7 As part of the Centennial Celebrations the Lions and Lioness Clubs of 105EA Zone 1a worked to purchase a number of Chemotherapy Pumps for their local Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King s Lynn. The five Lions Clubs and two Lioness Clubs cover a large rural area with a variety of community styles within their Zone, including seaside holiday resorts, a visitor attraction town and small market towns, so each Club drew on their own resources to raise the funds. These included decorating a town in bras and boxers, quizzes, a sponsored walk, Easter egg raffles and auctions. The total donated at the presentation evening was 16, Lion Zone 1a Chairman Paul Southerton said: "We are really pleased to have raised so much money for such a good cause. The idea to raise money for the cancer unit came from a relative, who had mentioned patients were waiting a long time to receive treatment. We have more than achieved what we set out to do and it has taken us just nine months. The groups have had a lot of fun on this campaign and we hope that it will make a difference to the patients at the Cancer Care and Treatment Centre. The hospital's chief executive Jon Green was presented with cheques by representatives from the groups. It is hoped the money will buy more than five pumps. Mr Green said: "I would like to thank you for what you have achieved for the hospital individually and collectively. All of your efforts have made a significant contribution to the lives of the people who are treated in the Macmillan Unit. You have given something back to our community and that is something I am very keen on as the hospital is a big part of the community." Another Lionistic Year has begun and with it the search for that special young person who could represent our District in this years. Just think that Amazing Person could be in your Town waiting to be found. Can I please ask your Club to consider taking part this year? The Young Ambassadors of the 21st Century is a fantastic competition that recognises the accomplishments of passionate community champions aged between years, the winner of the District final will win a 500 Bursary to spend on their chosen project, with a further 1000 if they win the Multiple District competition. What would we need from the young person? They need to be making a difference in their community. Show Leadership Qualities. Be involved in a project that the bursary could be used on. Be able to speak enthusiastically for 3 minutes about the project. Be available to take part in the District, Multiple District and European competition if they progress. What would the Club need to do? Appoint a Lions member who is interested in the young people. Identify a potential candidate and fill in the application from and sent it to me by Monday the 18th September. Prepare and mentor the candidate in preparation for the competition. Accompany your candidate to each stage of the competition. How much will it cost? It will cost the Club 30 to enter a candidate into the competition. The candidates expenses (travel to District and possibly Multiple District stage of the competition) Expenses incurred can be drawn from the Clubs Charity account. Important dates: Between now and September 18th find that Special person in your town and contact me with the details. Sunday 19th November the District Final will take place at the Holiday Inn Ipswich Multiple District final will be 23rd to 25th February 2018 at The Village Hotel, Dudley, and the winner of this will go on to the European finals at Europa Forum. 8 On the afternoon of 8th July 2017 Lions from EA gathered in Norwich to enter a 'float' to celebrate the Lions Centennial in the Lord Mayor of Norwich s Parade. Many Clubs were represented and provided a colourful display. Taverham kindly provided their truck which was decorated with a gazebo loaned by Hethersett. The Centennial banner was provided and carried by Swaffham. Other clubs, City of Norwich, Wymondham, Great Yarmouth, Wroxham & Hoveton, Lioness Lions and various partners and friends carried banners, Lion glove puppets and collecting buckets. We all knew that we had walked the mile and a half procession route...and the even longer route back to our cars! A great time had by all and buckets nicely full for the Lord Mayor's charity. A good PR exercise with an audience of 1000's along the route. Don t forget that Audio Versions of EA s Lions Roar are available on the 105EA District Website. The Mayor said that she was very pleased to be a part of such a great organisation. She will remain an honorary member for the next year (during her term in office). August

9 On a lovely hot sunny summers day if slightly too hot for some of our members (we would have hated rain more and we've drowned in downpours on some previous years!!) manned a really popular stall a nerf gun game at the town carnival to help us promote Newmarket Lions to local people. We were amazed at the reaction...young, old, man, boy, woman or girl everyone wanted a go and to try and prove they were crack shot of the day and to win mini nerf guns which we put up as prizes, one for the adults and also one for the child with the highest score on the day. At just 1 a go we were kept busy, really busy, for a few manic hours but it was a great success and great fun. It was so worthwhile as not only was it a fun activity for people on the day where we were able to raise some money for our club but also we had a presence at a great day where it seemed the population of the whole town attended and supported. It can only help to get us noticed and maybe help to attract new members to the club which is so vital, said PR spokesperson Chris Rawlinson. A good time was had by all including our newest recruit Lion Ed Lucas who was only badged up two days before. His enthusiasm is so infectious and he is going to be a very hands on member and we all wish him well and many happy years as a member of Newmarket Lions. In the picture see our charter member Barrie Hough putting the final touches to the stall. Trevor Quince of was presented with the award by the District Governor Derek Prior (hot off the plane from Chicago) at the Club s 41st Charter in July. Trevor is our only surviving Charter member, so it is his 41st year in Lions. He has held every office and position in the Club having been President 3 times. He has done many things during his membership and has always been the first to volunteer for anything. He was one of the first Lions to start taking aid to Romania, all those years ago and ended up leading a number of trips over a ten year period. He was instrumental in re-starting the March Gala 20 years ago, and it is still going strong. Following a busy time in June and further commitments in July and August, a group of took time out to go to the End of the Pier Show in Cromer. The show lived up to its billing with fun and laughter, dance and song, afterwards the group went to a local restaurant for an evening meal. supported Swaffham Infant School at their fete, with the ever popular Pig Race game. The Lion mascot, who is always a favourite with the children, was there to help out. The pig races started, much to the amusement of the crowd, and were cheered on by their excited backers. Despite the rain at the start of the event the crowds soon flocked in and made it a very enjoyable event. For the Lions it s all about supporting the community and having fun. were at the Witham Town Carnival selling Balloon Race tickets in aid of Little Havens Children s Hospice. Witham Lion Priti Patel MP, Keith Radley (President), Sue Hall (Secretary) together with Priti s son Freddy released the balloons from the Witham Town Cricket Club ground. Our grateful thanks to the Cricket Club for allowing us access. All the balloons and cards are bio-degradable. The race winner will be contacted and announced soon after the returned tickets have been checked to find the balloon that travelled the furthest. Little Havens is the only hospice in Essex for children and young people up to the age of 19. August

10 A HUGE thank you to all those Members of the Lions Family, for attending the Royal Norfolk Show this year. Members braved the inclement conditions over the Set-up day and the two Show days, issuing wristbands at the main Public entrance gates, in addition to a District PR 2017 stand. Some 120 Lion-days were spent at the Showground over three days from across the District. Clubs represented were, in no particular order, Wymondham crew waiting hopefully for rain to stop Then the rain stopped and Lions on Wymondham Gate were back in business! From lunch time on set-up day (Tuesday,) it rained and rained but our stalwart Members continued with Sheep Penning, setting-up the District Gazebos and the main PR stand, plus manning the caravan parks. The first Show Day, Wednesday, was wet and muddy all day, with a distinct lack of the usual crowds. Thursday was fine but still muddy underfoot and attendance better than Day One but nowhere near expected numbers. None the less, we persevered with child tagging and PR and over the 2 days we issued approximately 3,000 bands. This was in addition to the 7,000 issued in advance to schools - so wristband numbers were close to normal. The PR stand was not sited in the position we have had in the past and footfall was well down. While we were near stands featuring Public Schools good for promoting YLIS, Young Ambassador and the like we didn t have thousands of visitors. The position of the stand may influence our decision to have a PR stand next year. On a positive note, we were invited to join the Sunset Ceremony, joining other voluntary groups in the Grand Ring, recognising their contribution to the Show. We had 26 Members in the Parade, led by DG Nigel holding the Lions Flag and DO Lioness Angela parading the Lioness Flag, leading our contingent. We were positioned very close to the Band and Choir so you couldn t miss us! A thoroughly worthwhile District event and one I hope we can be part of again next year but we may need to consider the value of having a stand, aside from the normal wristbands tents at each gate. A Charity stand costs the District inc VAT. We have no say in where we are positioned and certainly our position this year, was not ideal. While PR is difficult to measure membership-wise, I doubt we had too many enquiries about possible members. Perhaps we might do better by having MIAB table at each gate, with the wristbands being issued as the customers come in and MIAB being pursued as they go out. Wristbands are very visual and a worthwhile Community Service. For the Show, we issued 10,000 bands over 2 days, to a reported figure of 80,000 people attending. Costs for the wristbands is 350..ish. I currently have approx. 43,000 wristbands in stock well catered for until Re-Districting. In due course, I expect a cheque from the Norfolk Show a donation for services rendered with the wristbands. For the past few years, a cheque for 1,200 has come to us; whether we get that amount this year???? August

11 A dozen Lions Clubs from South East Essex (and some from further afield - Newmarket & Wymondham) banded together to run the 7th Annual Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled. The event was held at The King John School in Thundersley and was attended by over two hundred eager competitors and their carers. They came in cars, coaches and buses from numerous clubs based in Essex and also those from Ipswich, Pinner, Aylesbury and Gosport. As well as the usual Olympic-type sports like archery, basketball, fencing, kurling, shot putt, discus and javelin, the competitors were able to try their hands at a variety of activities including, sticky balls, bags in buckets and shove halfpenny. There was even an area set aside for creating different sorts of artwork and painting. After the games had been completed, David Stanley's Music Man Project provided suitable entertainment whilst the competitors tucked into hot dogs and burgers from the Leigh Lions BBQ and collected their prizes from the never-ending raffle. Local Mayors and MPs visited during the day and some were volunteered (together with DG Derek) for handing out hundreds of medals to the successful competitors at the closing ceremony. A spot or two of rain did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the hosts or their guests and everyone agreed they would do it all over again next year! Clubs taking part included: EA Lioness News Photos by Michael Stanbridge President Nicola Claxton s year of office ended on a high with the presentation of our cheque for 1000 towards the Lions Chemotherapy Pump Appeal, our Zone project for the year. The funds were raised from our Pumps for Pumps sponsored walk, together with the proceeds from our Easter Egg Tombola. Nicola s successful year was rounded off at our Changeover Lunch at the end of June. This took place at the Station Inn, when Nicola handed the Chain of Office to our new President Christine Haines. On 1st July we attended the Lions Centenary Ball at Lynford Hall, where Swaffham Lions, Lionesses and guests celebrated 100 years since the Lions Organization was first founded. President Christine chaired our first meeting of the new Lionistic year in July, and later on we had our first fund-raiser with a tombola and a bric-a-brac stall at the Scouts Summer Fete, the proceeds of which will go to the Scouts to help purchase new tents. 12 At the EA District Meeting at Thetford District Chairman Angela made a presentation to EA Lioness Liaison Officer Douglas Whyte and his wife Morag. Douglas has been Lioness Liaison Officer for the past ten years and he will now devote more time to his local Lions Club. More EA Lioness News On a bright sunny morning, the 27th May, accompanied by her Club President Lioness Gill took up her Multiple District Chairman s Challenge to walk across The Dome in London. As they climbed up, up and away they finally reached the top. Standing on the central platform in winds of 20 miles an hour they admired the views across London before making their descent back down to terra firma. Angela said The brochure describes this as a 90 minute adventure, well as I don t like heights I was not sure whether it would be an adventure or 90 minutes of hell! It was an adventure and I felt exhilarated when I had achieved the goal I set out to do, to raise funds for a very good cause Dementia UK Admiral Nurses. Gill and I would like to thank every one who made donations. along with the usual teddy game. It was a beautiful day and the stall took just over 110, all of which was donated to the British Red Cross. evening with a tasty selection of puddings on offer at the half way point.. The Grove Girls were the successful team of a closely challenged quiz. had a stall at the second annual Community Day, which is an event to showcase all the organisations and various groups in Witham. There was a household tombola There was also our Environmental display showcasing the Plight of the Bees and selling our little knitted bees and bee friendly seeds as well. held their Summer Quiz Several members of attended the Saffron Walden Lions Club Charter, enjoying a lovely meal in good company in the very nice surroundings of their local golf club. Lion President Richard took this opportunity to make the handover to incoming President Lion Pam. The Lionesses would like to wish her a very successful and happy year and look forward to working with her over the coming months.
