It is about our District. Redistricting is not going to go away if we ignore the issue, we need to pull together as one. Shortly there will be a questionnaire being sent to all members asking for your opinion on redistricting and it is your opportunity to have your say. So do not ignore it, take time to read the questions, discuss within your club, attend zone meetings, remember your future depends on what you do today. After three years in which nearly 300 clubs had partnered with their local Marie Curie groups, we have raised around 500,000 enough to provide some 25,000 hours of end of life care to our local communities. 2 third Grand Quiz was a great success with local quizzers looking to support their local charities and good causes. It was particularly successful for the Take Six team who won 1,000 for their chosen charity, Leigh Folk Festival Association. The runners up were not too disappointed as their team won 500 for The Endeavour Trust. These two worthy local Leigh institutions are among the many charitable causes to have benefited from the Leigh on Sea Lions Club community service fund via the Grand Quizzes with some six thousand pounds now having been donated to local worthy causes over the past six months. Leigh on Sea Lions are fortunate to be in a position to make these donations as a direct result of the unstinting efforts of their team of unpaid volunteers who run the Lions Charity Shop by Thames Drive in Leigh on Sea which has raised some 150,000 for charitable purposes since it opened in January Later in the year the Lions are proposing to hold another Grand Quiz to coincide with the annual Children in Need fundraising by the BBC in November. Anyone looking to raise funds for their favourite local good cause and wishing to enter a team should contact Tony Prior on for more details. held a very successful St George s Day Quiz in the Swaffham Assembly Rooms in aid of Pancreatic Cancer. Over sixty people took part and the final score was very close, with only four points separating the top six teams. The winners came from Narborough, led by Lion President Colin Mowles. A magnificent total of 700 was raised for a very deserving cause. presented the cheque for 700 to Kay Wells to go to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. Kay lost her mother to pancreatic cancer and has become a successful fund raiser for the charity, which is the Cinderella of the cancer charities as seen below. 3 Local actor Vince Raynor was guest speaker at Fellowship meeting recently. He appeared in several Agatha Christie programmes along with Joan Hickson and in various BBC comedy shows, Hi De Hi, Allo Allo, etc. He spoke of the characters from the shows Sue Pollard, Paul Shane and the fact that it was the 1987 Hurricane that brought the end of Hi De Hi. Such was the devastation of the camps exterior, set at Dovercourt, just up the road from Clacton, most of the remaining filming was done in the Hawaiian Ballroom. Swaffham was a location set for Allo Allo where he played the part as a German Officer and on one occasion turned into a disguised onion seller. A unique way of publicising a quiz is to be quizzed yourself. That is what happened when notified local radio Dream 100 about their forthcoming Nostalgia Quiz. Presenter Murph, invited Clacton Lions to participate in his own general knowledge and music quiz that takes place each day at lunchtime over the whole week. VP Liz Godden and her team were also able to promote current Lions fundraising projects and plans to celebrate the centenary next year. Brains of North Essex! The general knowledge questions were answered with ease, however, the music ones, (knowing lyrics and artists), were slightly more difficult. Despite an average score (18) it is hoped that they will be invited to participate again in the future. At April business meeting, Welfare Chairman Andrew Johnson announced that a further 40 hearing aids and 250 printer cartridges had been sent. Spectacle recycling had now been going on for 25 years. 155 had been raised through the selling of spec cases. Lion Robin Winterton said that over the last year Clacton Lions Club have issued 1,285 MIAB s throughout the area. Lions can have a great time socializing too. Clacton were joined by members from Mersea Island at their Bowl and Breakfast event. As the crow flies, Mersea is Clacton s nearest club and despite the friendliness between the two clubs, it was an extremely competitive event. Everyone appreciating strikes when they occurred, and oohed when the skittles stayed upright. Honours were even, Peter (Clacton) was top scorer with 233 from his 2 games. This was closely followed by Roy (Mersea) 226 and Keith also from Mersea 206, Ron (Clacton) 205. The ladies also showed keenness with Liz (Clacton) 214, hard pressed by Sara The Breakfast Bowl (Mersea) 208, Carol (Mersea) 195 and Clacton s Lynda 180. Sometimes this chap misplaces his specs. 4 Melvin Jones Fellowship Presentations At the recent Charter Dinner Lion President Keith Moore presented Lion Dermot Wesley-Smith with the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Before the presentation Lion President Keith Said The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest accolade a Lion s Member can have bestowed upon them. It s given to an individual for their dedication and outstanding service to Lionism over many years. Lion Dermot has served as Welfare and Service Chairman within the Club for many years and is always keen to help those less fortunate individuals. His tireless work and dogged enthusiasm is a fine example to us all. Dermot has been an ever present figure within the community of Beccles too and is still very active within the May Centre despite only recently retiring as its Chairman. Upon receiving the Fellowship Dermot said This is a total surprise and an unexpected honour to become a member of the Melvin Jones Fellowship. I don t know what to say. I know I couldn t have done what I have done over the last 35 years without the support and patience of my wife Christine, she has supported me totally over the years and that has enabled me to do more work for the Lions and in turn for the community. I really do enjoy my role as Chairman of the Welfare and Service Committee within Club. I want to take this opportunity to thank my fellow club members for acknowledging me in this way, although really we are all in this together helping people wherever we can. Thank you all very much indeed. At 25th Charter Anniversary presentations of Melvin Jones Fellowships were made to Ruth Bassett, Sheila Fuller, Eileen Harris and Kay Large and the photograph shows them with their proud supporters. At the same event Progressive MJF s were presented to Past District Governors Rex Palmer and Tony Prior. Long Service Awards were also presented to Evelyn and John Cotton (20 years) and Roger Fuller, Eileen and George Harris, Kay and David Large and Betty Palmer (25 years). The annual Suffolk Villages Cycle Ride takes place on Sunday 19th June The main beneficiary charity will be MacMillan Cancer Support which is also Sainsburys chosen charity this year So on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May were out in force promoting their Charity Bike Ride and collecting over 2, in just two days! Do come and join us for a fabulous day of cycling starting from our headquarters at Elmswell with three carefully chosen and fully supported routes 25K, 50K and 100K. June

5 The Ivan Holmes Community Award Presentation The first annual Ivan Holmes Community Award was presented to Christine Pinsent by Mandy Holmes at the Charter Dinner. This annual award is in memory of the late Lion Ivan Holmes MJF, who was a member of Beccles and District Lions Club for over 35 years and the majority of that time he was the club s secretary. Throughout that time Ivan was also an ever present figure within the Beccles Community, and, through this award it is hoped to recognise those people who, like Ivan, tirelessly serve their community helping to improve the lives of others. Lion President Keith Moore said Lion Ivan was an inspiration to lots of people and we as a Club know there are others doing the same good work within the community, so we see this award as our way of acknowledging these individuals and we are very honoured that Mandy is with us tonight to present this first annual award to, Christine Pinsent. Before presenting the award to Christine, Mandy said The intention of this award is to act as an inspirational and motivational legacy, to continue Ivan s good work. I know the club received lots of nominations, and one nominee stood out amongst them all, and that was Christine. I know Ivan and Christine had been involved with many projects in Beccles over the years and I feel it would be safe to say that at times they tried each other s patience and yet, through the true community spirit, it all came together at the right time and I do feel the local Community benefited from it. I would also like to acknowledge and thank every other nominee for their tireless work, within the local area, which of course is all voluntary. So to all the volunteers, whether clubs, societies or individuals, that help to improve our community - thank you. In response Christine said Mandy, I would like to thank, Beccles Lions Club for this lovely award. It is completely unexpected. I know Ivan and myself have occasionally not seen eye to eye over things when planning the next project, although, in the end, it always seemed to come together and was a success. I feel very honoured and moved by this award, because Ivan was such a presence within the community and to even be considered for the award is an honour let alone, receive it. It s very encouraging to see so many people doing so much for the community, long may it continue. I will treasure this award, thank you. Mr Peter Aldous, our MP said I can only echo everything that has been said tonight and I know from speaking to people just how much Ivan was appreciated within the community and this award is a fitting tribute not only to him, but to the Beccles Lions Club and equally Christine is a worthy recipient. June From left to right - Christine Pinsent, Lion President Keith Moore, Peter Aldous MP and Mandy Holmes. has a team of drivers who continue their fortnightly delivery of the Food Bank collections from Swaffham to the Mid Norfolk distribution centre in Dereham. The catchment area of the Food Bank is Swaffham, Dereham, Fakenham and the surrounding villages. On each trip the Lions transport 60kg of food, which is stored in bread trays, to the centre at Dereham. The warehouse is manned by up to twenty-five volunteers. The food is then sorted into categories and expiry dates, before being made up into food parcels for families and individuals. The food is donated by church members in Swaffham and delivered to the Baptist Church where it is weighed and put into the baskets ready for delivery; this is done by the coordinator, Helen Neal. President Rod presenting a cheque 350 to Dean Ovel who is raising money for the Dementia Appeal Fund. Dean is running in this 8ft Hamster Wheel he designed and made. He is going to make like a hamster, and run in circles for 24 hours. He will be taking comfort breaks, but intends to eat, drink and pound the wheel for a whole day.

6 Jen & Jim s JOGLE 3-13 May 2016 An awfully big adventure! WE DID IT miles and 241 litres fuel! On 3 May PDG Jim and Jennifer arrived with great excitement at Wymondham Market Place around to find, to their surprise, a party of 14 Supporters who had come to give the JOGLE a rousing start to the challenge which would raise much needed funds for East Anglian Children s Hospices, nook Appeal. Members of Wymondham Lions Club, friends plus the Town Mayor, Lion Cllr Joe Mooney, wearing his chain of office were waiting patiently. All happy to get up early to see the intrepid pair off on their Awfully Big Adventure. Photos a plenty and its next stop Quidenham Children s Hospice, this time met by EACH representatives and Staff. By the Royal Mail van, polished and gleaming on a lovely sunny morning, complete with its original insignia was ready for the ride of its 33-year life! First overnight stop was Bishop Auckland, then Day 2 took us over the Forth Bridge into the Highlands to Ballinluig, near Pitlochry. Mountains in the distance still snow-topped and baby lambs everywhere! Excitement on Day 3 as we head through spectacular scenery to our first milestone destination of John O Groats. Lots of stops to take photos and lots of interest in us, what we were doing and of course the Royal Mail Van. Wherever we went there was someone taking photos and asking of the van s history. The JOG part of the challenge complete we headed south on Day 4 to Bridge of Allan through to Preston on Day 5 and onwards to Somerset on Day 6. By this time, we realised how much a challenge this was to us personally as our beloved van is a utility vehicle, not built for comfort! Knees and backs aching we were grateful to arrive at friends for a break on Day 7 with NO driving. Fully rested and raring to go on Day 8 we headed South and West to reach the second milestone destination of Lands End. A good journey enabled us to reach LE by early afternoon. We were surprised how commercial it was after the windswept barren landscape of John O Groats. Visibility was poor as the whole area was enshrouded by sea mist. Undeterred we took more photos to prove we had arrived! Messages of congratulation pinged in to the mobile, including an audio cheer and group photo of Jennifer s Line Dance class that was in progress at the time! Back to our overnight stop in Newquay via St Ives for a traditional Cornish Cream Tea! It has to be done and rude not to when they do it so well! Day 9 was bucketing with rain as we headed to Exeter to meet up with PDG Julian and Lynette plus some of Jennifer s family who were in the area. A pleasant social time over coffee as we told of our adventure. Now off to Bristol to spend a night in the home of friends PDG Harry and Ruth. Another good evening catching up after too long. Day 10 we have an easy drive into Oxfordshire to be hosted by more great friends, PDG John and Linda. Day 11 and we are homeward bound after an amazing journey when we met so many lovely people, saw breath-taking scenery, and importantly raised money for a very worthy cause. An amazing experience. 7 On Sunday 8th May an intrepid band of walkers set out from Eastbourne to walk the South Downs Way, unfortunately, due to injuries, some had to drop out on the first leg. Most continued on in an effort to complete the miles and to add to the total miles walked for Diabetes towards our Centennial Target. This walk was organised by the, and included Lions from the and as well as the New Century Lions Club. In support of their efforts another 17 Lions set off from the Convention Hall to walk a mile along the promenade and back. This group included Lions from. Overall there were 33 walkers and two dogs including walkers from and both from 105SE. The team has already raised nearly 4000 and still have more to come. Adur East Club members provided accommodation and a delicious evening meal in a local Italian restaurant, whilst Midhurst Club provided pack ups for the whole team and a very generous donation. As a thank you the whole team attended and even managed a few dances at Midhurst 25th Charter Anniversary. At the end of the Walk with The whole experience was brilliant walking and talking Diabetes UK with friends old and new. Let's get the zones out and about walking and talking together, sharing ideas and planning new ventures. 8 Late last year the were approached by Charlotte Edwards, Clinical Nurse at Southend Hospital, who had already raised the wonderful amount of 1,000 herself towards the purchase of a much needed AccuVein for Neptune Children's Ward. At the same time Charlotte also indicated that the Neo Natal Ward would benefit greatly if they had an AccuVein. After a brief explanation to our members as to how wonderful and much needed these machines are The Lions Club of Rayleigh voted to donate the balance of 2,200 to enable Neptune Ward to buy their AccuVein and we also voted to donate a further 3,200 to enable the Neo Natal Ward to buy one outright. The Lions Club of Rayleigh are delighted that they were able to assist by donating 5,400 in total and have reduced the stress, pain and anxiety for so many babies, children and parents alike. "Men s Sheds started in Australia to give a focal point to men who were not in employment and/or not socialising often with working at home, as sole traders or retired. The movement started in the UK in 2013 and now has in excess of 280 registered Sheds. It was found that men talk better when doing something, comparing skills or suggestions as to finding solutions to situations. Men talk shoulder to shoulder where women talk eye to eye. By giving an opportunity for men to have a practical base, they are more inclined to share skills, talk about men s things e.g. football, cars, the price of timber and voice opinions on political or current affairs issues. The most important factor is that they have a reason to get out of the house and somewhere specific to go and to interact, to have banter with other men. The felt this was a very worthwhile cause for the community and donated towards a lathe which has now been purchased and is fully in use. Lions Clubs Midsummer Sports Day 18th June 2016 The King John School On 18th June the Lions Clubs from around East Anglia will be holding their annual Midsummer Sports Day for the disabled at The King John School in Benfleet, Essex. It is expected there will be around three hundred and fifty participants from Disabled Clubs throughout South East England taking part in what has come to be a very popular event. Activities on the day include Archery, Basketball, Bowls, Discus, Fencing, Golf, New age Curling, Shot Put, Table Tennis and a Wheelchair Slalom There will also be music provided by the Castle Point Lions Band and The Music Man as well as an art workshop run by The Art Ministry. Food will be provided by the Leigh on Sea Lions Club barbecue and medals will be presented by local MPs and dignitaries. The event s main organiser, John Sanderson is currently looking for two table tennis tables to use on the day and would be very pleased to hear from anybody that may be able to assist. 9 congratulated Lioness Judith on her application to train as an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer. The course is to be held in Birmingham and Judith has been successful in acquiring most of her costs for the course and accommodation. The Lionesses agreed to assist Judith with a donation towards the cost. Upon completion of the course, there may be an opportunity for future employment. The Lionesses wished Judith every success. This event took place on the 16th April and was an evening the Club will remember fondly and with great pride. It was lovely to be able to welcome our guests on this special evening which included the two Lions who were our Region Chairman and Zone Chairman the year the Club was formed. The Club was formed in 1991 and has gone from strength to strength, all the members are very proud of the service they have been able to give to their local community and the wider world. They have shared much fun and fellowship over the years and hope that they can continue to serve for many years to come. The Bank Holiday comes and we think great, a chance to perhaps relax, have a glass of wine and take things a little easier for a while. Then came a call for help to One of the members, Lioness Chris Duffy, had made a request to the Club for help to tidy up her large garden and it was agreed that the best time to go would be on Good Friday. Several members together with one or two friends went along armed with garden gloves and tools to make a difference. The weather could not have been better, a beautiful warm sunny day. Work started by having hot cross buns, scones and tea and coffee, this was just to build up the energy levels, you understand, ready for all the hard work that lay ahead. Having worked solidly for a few hours it was time for more nourishment, so a lunch of bacon rolls a nice glass of wine and more tea and coffee was enjoyed then back to work again. After finally becoming exhausted, it was time to finish the day with a final energy boost of lovely homemade cake, tea and coffee or more wine! A great day was had by all, good company, very tasty refreshments and lots of fun and fellowship. At the finish of the day as we saw the delight on Lioness Chris s face as she looked at the garden and said how lovely it looked, we knew that when tomorrow came and we woke up aching from the day before, we would not mind a bit, because just to see that smile made it all worth it! On a gorgeous sunny morning in April, some members of together with family, friends and members of the public set off on a walk through the local country side to raise money for Breast Cancer Now. Taking time to relax, chat and enjoy the lovely scenery as the walkers made their way back to the local pub to take part in the raffle, enjoy a superb meal and a well earned drink! This was a very enjoyable and successful event and the Lionesses were very pleased to be able to announce that the event raised June

10 Lioness Club of Felixstowe Having enjoyed the Lionesses Conference in February, several hardy Lions and Lionesses also attended the EA Lions Convention in March, which was held at the Stoke-by-Nayland Hotel. A great hoe-down was held on the Friday evening, with excellent musicians and most people appropriately attired in blue jeans and checked shirts. On Saturday morning, three Lionesses carried out meet and greet duties, before spending the rest of the day attending the Convention itself. That evening, a formal Banquet and Ball was held, with somewhat different outfits in evidence. We all enjoyed a splendid meal and live Big Band music. An interesting feedback session was held on Sunday morning, before everyone made their way home. We are now looking forward to attending the two conferences next year! As well as enjoying these events, we are back in fundraising mode. The re-scheduled Clairvoyant Evening proved to be a great success and a substantial amount of money was raised for Felixstowe Coastal Rescue Patrol and the R.N.L.I. We are now looking forward to our Quiz Night tickets sold out weeks ago! always a very popular occasion. We are planning to induct a new member at our next meeting and we have two more ladies who are interested so Hurrah for Felixstowe Lionesses! The have held two fundraising stalls in the past month or so in the Grove Centre. The first was their annual Easter Stall which took , which was pretty good considering the fickleness of the weather! This money is all going to Marie Curie. They also had a St George s Day stall, which took Again the weather was extremely variable with sunshine, rain, wind and hail all in the same morning! However, the people of Witham were very supportive and many old friends who frequented our shop, came by to support, have a laugh or just say hello. As always, a good time was had by all along with lots of tea, coffee and sausage rolls. Witham Lionesses also held another quiz at the end of March. Although attendance wasn t what it usually is due to scheduling conflicts, it was still a fabulous evening and a total of 436 was raised. This amount was aided by a very generous contribution from Braintree Lions. A wonderful time was had and all money will go to Prince Harry s charity, Walking with the Wounded.
