1 Issue 2 September 2017 LiONS ROAR Lions Clubs International District 105EA - News and views including those of District Governor Derek Prior TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH It is great to get around the Clubs in EA and hear about and see all the great work you are doing. I am trying to visit the "far flung" clubs (at least far from Billericay) DG Derek s Diary for September early in my DG year for 2 reasons. They are the clubs I Sat 02-Sep Car Parking - Basildon & Wickford know least well, in general, and the longer journeys are Sun 03-Sep District Fun Day Great Yarmouth much better in nice summery weather. Mandy and Ujjal Mon 04-Sep Ipswich CV are also getting round clubs, learning about the various Wed 06-Sep Chelmsford Lionesses CV service projects and fund raising events as they go. I will have completed more than half a dozen club Sat 09-Sep Centennial 100 Club Charter meetings, a number of Charter and Certification Sun 10-Sep Leigh Regatta Anniversaries, my first Council of Governors Meeting as Mon Tue 11-Sep 12-Sep Hunstanton Lions CV Sheringham and Cromer CV DG and held the first Cabinet Meeting of the year, but more importantly, I have attended a number of Club Wed 13-Sep Cambridge Lions CV events for the public. Thu 14-Sep Southend Lions Visit My thanks go to many Lions Clubs for asking me to attend their events - the South Essex Lions (and others) for the Sat 16-Sep Henham Steam Rally brilliant Southend Disabled Sports Day, Haverhill Lions for Sat 16-Sep EA Lioness Lions Charter the Haverhill Summer Bash, Acle and Brundall Lions for Sun Mon 17-Sep 18-Sep Eastwood Charter Norfolk Broads Lions CV their Summer Fete, Peterborough Lions Awareness Event, Great Yarmouth Lions Hopton Fete. The event was well organised and I particularly enjoyed seeing Lions from different clubs mixing, working together and having a good time. The Cadet Fife and Drum Band and the Ukulele Orchestra contributed to the party atmosphere. And the next day, there was the Hopton Fete run by the Great Yarmouth Lions with at least half a dozen other clubs represented. Again, a party atmosphere, with lots of stalls and entertainment in the arena and Lions getting together to support the local community. Continued over plus more pictures

4 enjoyed a sociable evening at Bowl 2 Day where 20+ members and friends joined up for the semi-annual Bowling event. While many enjoyed the challenge with the social side mixed in it became quite heated with the March Club triumphing over their Wisbech counterparts in the final frame of the final game. With Lion Ian obtaining a triple strike. Wisbech did come away with the booby prize with President Maureen winning it for the lowest score. September In the photograph IPDG s wife, Marion Folkard, is seen presenting a cheque for to her chosen charity Cystic Fibrosis Trust This brings the money donated by 105 EA Lions, to a grand total of Also in the photograph, Community Development and Fundraising Managers left Claire Phillips, right Alison Edwards. Marion wishes to give enormous Thanks to all the Lions in 105EA for their fantastic support, and generosity for her chosen charity the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. So many Lions helped in many ways varying from Raffles, Magic Night, to climbing Ben Nevis!! With out this incredible support, this magnificent total would not have been reached. Many Thanks and Best Wishes have seen their Washbag Appeal become a huge success. Past President Jenny King, during her presidency, set a goal of providing 100 washbags for the needy of East Anglia and 100 for Romania. It all came about when it was noticed there was a lack of toiletries for both adult males, females and youngsters whenever people talked about food banks or even Women's refuges. So the Club set about raising funds to provide items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, deodorant, ladies sanitary items, a comb, shampoo, a towel and face flannel shaving items, hair brush and a nit comb all in a washbag. With the help of an appeal to other clubs in EA plus money raised from events and some donated goods Jennie is now busy putting the washbags together. Some of the New Century Lions will be visiting Romania in July as part of the ongoing annual Romanian Pride visit and will purchase toiletries over there in order to save on extra airline baggage costs plus the washbags can be filled with items the people of Romania are familiar with. So from everyone at New Century Lions a big thank you to every Lions club and individual who supported in whatever way this very worthwhile cause. have been supporting Sophie Burke over the past few months with a raffle and publicity. Sophie has a rare genetic condition called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which is not supported by the NHS. The Lions are helping to raise funds for her to see a specialist in London who has an in depth knowledge of the condition. The raffle was drawn at a fund raising Garden Party by Lion Simon Fowler, other Lions in attendance enjoyed the tombola, guess the number of biscuits in a jar as well as a glass of Pimms. Just over 2000 has been raised so far for the cause. The balloons released on Saturday 8th July from the Witham Town Cricket Clubs ground by Priti Patel MP and some of her fellow travelled north east with some landing in Clacton on Sea and most continuing to the Netherlands. Diana Greene of BT Brentwood purchased the balloon the travelled the furthest, and thanks to O Reavers of Schoonhaven Netherlands who returned her balloon ticket, she has received the 100 winners prize. The Witham and District Lions will be sending a gift to O Reavers with our thanks for returning the ticket. Little Haven s Children s Hospice will also receive 100 being the profit from the Lions Carnival Balloon Race.

5 EA CABINET INFO - from 6th August 2017 Dear all, at our last Cabinet meeting a suggestion was made that it may be useful to share feedback from each Cabinet meeting in the great Lions ROAR, I have committed to undertake that piece of work. It was DG Lion Derek s 1st Cabinet meeting, he came back fully invigorated following the International Convention in Chicago and his 1st Council of Governors weekend held at the end of July. We had a really big turn out considering it s in the holiday season and it also coincided with the 1st weekend of the Special Olympics being held in Sheffield where several of our Cabinet were volunteering. During DG Derek s report he mentioned that he had attended the District Incoming Officers Day, International Convention in Chicago, Essex Disabled Sports Day, Brundall Roadshow and Council of Governors. One of the many questions and answers that came out of the Council Meeting was clarity that part of our dues does include a payment made to PPL (Phonographic Performance Ltd) to cover Lions events, however you may also need an additional licence called a PRS - details available from - to allow you to play music at your events / Xmas Carol collections etc. (PRS Licence normally paid for but a Charity discount almost always reduces the cost) The MD has set up a 1 day CIO training event on Sunday 22nd October in Peterborough at the Holiday Inn subsidised by the HI and also MD and will cost 30 per head, further details will be issued by MD, but please put this in your diary as all clubs will have to become CIO registered at some point in time. On CIO status, if your club does not have current Charity Status you must register with Lions MD Charities Treasurer Lion Tom Berry (liontom.berry@yahoo.com), further advice from District Treasurer Lion Roger Fuller. Discussion has taken place regarding what our new MD badge will be following Ireland becoming a separate District (133), the new badge will be the traditional lions badge with We Serve underneath it. Grenfell Tower disaster monies will be used to support the counselling of local children impacted by the terror of Grenfell Tower, this will be via training 160 teachers on our Life Skills programme Discussion took place on what District Role holders should have a DBS check. The agreed list is Life Skills, Young Leaders in Service, Youth Exchange, Vulnerable Persons, Peace Poster, County DBS countersigners, LEO advisor. District Treasurer Lion Roger reported that 21 clubs hadn t yet paid their dues. Also Accounts are still outstanding from: EA Centennial 100, Dereham, EA New Century, EA Lioness Lions and UEA Campus. Nominations for DG, VDG, 2VDG and resolutions for Convention are due the cut-off is 30th September, nominations for the District Charity & Hearing Trusts the cut off is 31st December. 6 Despite it being a late July Friday, Daffodils were seen around a Morrisons Clacton store. Members of were asked to do another appeal for Marie Curie Cancer Charity and having an abundance of badges left from their April appeal, distributed some more. Over the 2 day period in April around 800 was collected. This one day collection raised 380. Lion President Peter Luckhurst with potential member Joe McCann There was an impressive amount of 200 in donations collected at the recent Tendring Show. Collection pots had been placed at the 3 entrance gates to the showground, so it is with grateful thanks from to the other Lions Clubs, for their assistance on the day. The money collected went back into District to help pay for the next supply of wristbands. I didn t know Lions accepted ladies, I thought that it was a men s club, was a comment spoken to Clacton on Sea Lion Irene Lock recently. Irene herself has only been a member for 15 months and engaged into a conversation that has potentially gained another member. Sandra was visiting an open day at the local Fire Station with her grandson. were assisting with a PR stall, where the local Fire Brigade, Coastguard, Search and Rescue dogs and other emergency units were demonstrating their skills., took time out from a photo shoot to have a go on the hose, but he could just about manage to extinguish a small bonfire!! Several Message in a Bottles were distributed along with the emergency Deaf Awareness hotel fire door hangers. Money raised from the event went to Stanley Newman a young boy suffering with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. Clacton Lions had contributed, in the past, to his funding for a specially adapted wheelchair. Stanley spent most of the morning whizzing around in it, demonstrating his driving skills. He did however find time to ring Mickey Mouse s bell with assistance from Mum. Fourteen members of answered the call to help at the Wayland Show. With thousands of people attending, the Lions were kept busy manning the pre-booked and paying booths. With so many children attending the Lions supplied their Guardian Angel wristbands to ensure any lost children were quickly reunited with the parents, fortunately only one child went missing and was soon reunited with his parents. The Lions also manned the cattle gates, making sure the public were safe whilst livestock were moved. continue to collect unwanted spectacles from the three Swaffham surgeries, the two opticians and the surgery at Litcham. So far Swaffham Lions have collected over 100,000 unwanted pairs which are then sent to the Lions at Chichester, by Parcel Force, free of charge, where they are sorted before being sent to France for grading. Chichester Lions are receiving used spectacles from Lions clubs throughout the UK, as well as from opticians and supermarkets. Spectacles are delivered to them in boxes and bags of all shapes and sizes and are processed by their club members and other volunteers in their workshop. They use their considerable experience to select the items that are suitable for recycling and to sort them in preparation for onward transmission to Medico France in Le Havre. Medico France has the necessary equipment to clean and grade the spectacles ready for use in eye camps in Africa, India and Eastern Europe. Every year Chichester Lions send over 300,000 pairs of spectacles to Medico France. Through Chichester, the UK Lions clubs provide more than 50% of the spectacles processed by Medico France - more than any other national group including France itself with your help. September

7 Lions from Wymondham and Littleport together with family members attended annual Sandcastle/SandCreation at Hunstanton beach in mid August. A blustery day saw Sebastian and Bethan take the children's prize with a traditional Sandcastle that included a Castle, Monastery, Moat outbuildings and turrets and adorned with lots of coloured flags. Arthur & Doreen won the Adults competition with a shield depicting Ely s coat of arms. A fish and chip lunch was enjoyed by all. As the London Stadium (former Olympic Stadium) safety officer Peter Smith was responsible for the safety and wellbeing of everyone that came into the stadium as well as during the World Para Athletics Championships and the World Athletics Championships. This amounted to around 1 million people at the stadium, including nearly 50,000 children to the Para Athletics Championships on two special Schools Days. Peter has worked on international multi sports events such as the Commonwealth Games (Glasgow) and European Games (Baku) Azerbaijan and as a memento normally tries to get a photo of the events medals, but on this occasion when Peter asked the organisation if it would be possible, the London 2017 organising committee were kind enough to offer him the opportunity to present the medals instead, which of course he readily agreed to. was invited Lion Peter Smith from to present medals for three events on the final day of the World Para Athletics on 23rd July 2017 at the London Stadium. Lion Peter displayed his Lions badge alongside the World Para Athletics Badge. He said It was a great privilege and very humbling to be invited to present the medals. It looked as though it was going to be another nice day for the Gt. Holland Church Fete. had split the Fundraising day along with selling the Club s infamous Quiz Sheets at a Morrisons store. 10 members attended the Fete, setting up the Gazebo and stalls. It went swimmingly until the fete was declared open, and so did the Heavens! Thunder, lightning and heavy rain scattered attendees to whatever shelter that was available. There were then around 20 people, cozying where they could, under the 10ft by 10ft space. Despite the intermittent showers, over 120 was collected so it was a worthwhile event. Whilst eight members spent the day at the Fire Station, around twelve members busied themselves at the Relay for Life day in Little Clacton, assisting with car-parking duties. Around 500 cars were directed during the day. It comes in handy if you have a marker on the car s aerial, or a yellow one to make it easily detectable. Welfare Chairman Andrew Johnson reported that some people may still be looking! Despite some inclement weather a great day was had by all.
